• Multiple Users Sharing Email Accounts - How to make messages "unread" for each user?

  Sorry if this isn't appropriate for webmasters stackexchange, but i'm not sure where it would go since it has to do with the logistics of setting up a website/email for a small company. I have an ecommerce store with multiple addresses such as: - [email protected] - [email protected] I'm not the only person managing the store. My partner and I both have those email accounts set up on each of our respective computers (right now it's using IMAP - he's on outlook and i'm on thunderbird). We have one major problem with this setup - If I read an email before he does, he doesn't know it ever arrived because the IMAP tells the server that the email has been "read". Of course, the same problem exists if he reads an email before I do. I understand that i can fix this problem by switching to POP3 and leaving the messages on the server. I'm okay with that... but it creates a NEW PROBLEM. If he replies to an email, it is no longer sync'd back to the server and therefore I can't read any emails that he has sent out. Same problem vice versa. This is also important for us because we want to know if one of us has already replied to an email so that the same thing isn't being done twice. With IMAP, all our sent emails are put in the Sent folder and synced to the server. What's a good way to set this up for a small company where email sharing is involved? This data often comes in unstructured formats and/or too fast for us to effectively process in real time. Collectively, we call these the 4 big data V’s: Volume, Velocity, Variety, and Variability. These qualities make this type of data best managed by NoSQL systems like Hadoop, rather than by conventional Relational Database Management System (RDBMS). We know that there are patterns hidden inside this data that might provide competitive insight into market trends.  The key is knowing when and how to leverage these “No SQL” tools combined with traditional business such as SQL-based relational databases and warehouses and other business intelligence tools. Drivers Petabyte scale data collection and storage Business intelligence and insight Solution The sketch below shows one of many big data solutions using Hadoop’s unique highly scalable storage and parallel processing capabilities combined with Microsoft Office’s Business Intelligence Components to access the data in the cluster. Ingredients Hadoop – this big data industry heavyweight provides both large scale data storage infrastructure and a highly parallelized map-reduce processing engine to crunch through the data efficiently. You have either made changes to a table that can't be re-created or enabled the option Prevent saving changes that require the table to be re-created. This is by design and can be quickly fixed in Management Studio by unchecking a property. To fix this in Management Studio, go to Tools - Options then go to the Designer Page and uncheck "Prevent saving changes that require table re-creation"

• Stop YouTube Videos from Automatically Playing in Chrome

  If you’ve actually used the internet before, you’ve probably come across a page with an auto-playing YouTube clip, and chances are good it was a rather annoying one. Here’s how to stop them from starting automatically in Chrome. We’ve already told you how to stop them from automatically playing if you’re a Firefox user (best answer: use Flashblock!), but now it’s time for Chrome users to get their turn. Use the Stop Autoplay for YouTube Extension The great thing about this extension is that it stops the video from playing, but it allows it to continue buffering, so when you do feel like playing the video, it’ll already be downloaded—really useful for people with slower internet connections. There’s no UI or anything fancy, just head to the extension page and click the Install button. If you want to get rid of it later, use the Tools –> Extensions menu (or you can type chrome://extensions/ into your address bar), and then click the Uninstall link for that add-on.   Download Stop Autoplay for YouTube [Google Chrome Extensions] Using FlashBlock for Chrome If you really wanted to, you could just disable Flash across the board using FlashBlock for Chrome. Once you’ve installed the extension, you won’t see any Flash elements anywhere, and you’ll have to move your mouse over them and click to enable them each time. When I installed the extension the first time, I noticed that YouTube was already in the allow list. I’m not sure if that’s the default setting or not, but you can use the icon in the address bar, or the Options from the Extensions panel to get to the settings page, and from there you can remove anything from the White List that you wouldn’t want. Another nice feature about Flash Block is that it can also block Silverlight, or you could simply uninstall or remove unnecessary Chrome plug-ins.   I know that it's been proven that a coding standard helps enormously. However, there are many different tools and IDEs that will format to whatever standard the programmer prefers. So long as the code's neat/commented (and not a spaghetti mess), I don't see the need for a coding standard. Are there any arguments for the development of a coding standard (we don't have one, but I was looking into creating one)?

• ASP.NET MVC WebService - Security for Industrial Android Clients

  I'm trying to design a system that will allow a bunch of Android devices to securely log into an ASP.NET MVC REST Web service. At present neither side are implemented. However there is an ASP.NET MVC website which the web service will site along side. This is currently using forms authentication. The idea will be that the Android devices will download data from the web service and then be able to work offline storing data in their own local databases, where users will be able to make updates to that data, and then syncing updates back to the main server where possible. The web service will be using HTTPS to prevent calls being intercepted and reduce the risk of calls being intercepted. The system is an industrial system and will not be in used by the general Android population. Instead only authorized Android devices will be authorized by the Web Service to make calls. As such I was thinking of using the Android devices serial number as a username and then a generated long password which the device will be able to pick up - once the device has been authorized server side. The device will also have user logins - but these will not be to log into the web service - just the device itself - since the device and user must be able to work offline. So usernames and passwords will be downloaded and stored on the devices themselves. My question is... what form of security is best setup on the web service? Should it use forms Authentication? Should the username and password just be passed in with each GET/POST call or should it start a session as I have with the website? The Android side causes more confusion. There seems to be a number of options here Spring-Android, Volley, Retrofit, LoopJ, Robo Spice which seems to use the aforementioned Spring, Retrofit or Google HttpClient. I'm struggling to find a simple example which authenticates with a forms based authentication system. Is this because I'm going about this wrong? Is there another option that would better suite this?

• SSL Certificate Works in Monit - But Not in Keystore

  I have a situation where there's a keystore file with the various root/intermediate certificates stored in it in a way that it seems to work for most browsers. Problem is that when mobile browsers hit it, there's a break in the chain and they complain. I used an SSL checker at http://www.sslshopper.com/ssl-checker.html and it states that "The certificate is not trusted in all web browsers. You may need to install an Intermediate/chain certificate to link it to a trusted root certificate." So...the desktop browsers must have the intermediate certs already and can make the chain connections, I'm assuming, while the mobile browsers can't. The thing is that I had used Portecle to export certificates from the keystore and cobble them together to create a .PEM certificate to run the Monit utility. When I check that application with the SSL checker, it works fine! The person that originally created the keystore said he couldn't follow the SSL provider's directions for creating the keystore because he created the CSR request using openssl, so the cert and private key had to be converted to DER format and use importkey to get it to work; following the directions he found online had importkey seem to use only a set keystore file as a result, and it would erase anything already in the file if it existed. So is there a way to take the certificate I created for Monit and create a working keystore for the Tomcat website? What would be causing the chain to be broken in the current keystore, but work for Monit? I have the SSL cert provider's intermediate and cross certificates, and the website's certificate, but is what else would I need to create a working chain of certs for a keystore?

• Stitch scanned images using CLI

  I have scanned a newspaper article which was larger than the scanner glass. Each page was scanned twice: the top and the bottom parts, where the middle part appeared in both images. Is there a way to quickly match and stitch these scanned images, preferably using CLI? The panorama stitching tools I know require lengthy configuration, which is mostly irrelevant: lens size, focus, angle etc. Hugin has a solution for this issue, but it isn't practical for batch jobs.

• Give apache write access to DocumentRoot on dev server

  I've got apache running on my mac workstation (OS X 10.7, with the pre-installed copy of apache), and our web applications require write access to certain sections of the filesystem to run (usually just a tmp dir, but sometimes more than that). We have (literally) thousands of clients, and I want to be able to quickly grab a copy of any website's code, and have it "just work", however I always need to manually modify the unix permissions of specific directories after pulling a client's website out of source control (the list of directories varies from one client to another, as it has changed over the years). Since it's a dev server, firewalled off from the general internet, I would like to give apache/php write access to the entire DocumentRoot. How can I do this? I tried chmod 777 on the DocumentRoot, but if I create a directory inside it, the permissions are still 755 (owner: me, group: wheel). I think there should be a way to force all files created inside DocumentRoot to be 777 or perhaps 775, with the _www user added to the wheel group?

  According to Google’s documentation, https://support.google.com/a/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=178723 It clearly says Create a TXT record containing this text: v=spf1 include:_spf.google.com ~all Why is this not a SPF record? RFC4408 defines SPF records, but it seems it’s not really used https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc4408#section-3.1.1 Is that right? Should I create both TXT and SPF ? Thanks

• Why do some bad websites rank well?

  Consider the following scenario: you are pitching SEO/Website Optimisation to a prospective client and you explain to them the importance of great copy and content, how acquiring links (ethically) can increase page rank, why the quality of the HTML build matters (H1, H2 tags, w3c validation etc), why keyword research is beneficial, you may drop in a few Google Webmaster Guideline or Matt Cutts references to back up your claims and rubbish the "back hat" approach as being no longer effective for good measure. Your advice is ethical and in the eyes of best practices, spot on. Then, the client points out to you some of their long established competitors on Google and you see these competitor websites ranking in the top spots (1 to 3) for medium to highly competitive search phrases that your client wants to compete for. These websites totally contradict your ethical approach and pretty much violate every best practice previously noted. They even out perform other "white hat" competitors who are in accordance with the above guidelines. I experienced this today. One of these well ranking websites had: About six microsites with more or less the same copy and a slightly varied layout Little or not textual content I would almost say duplicate content across the sites, but there was so little of it it could barely qualify for being duplicate All the content in Flash (with a music track that kicked in on each page load, not so much of an SEO issue - but it helps paint the picture) Keyword stuffing behind the Flash file with a bunch of black text on black background in the style of keyword 1 keyword 2,keyword1,keyword 2,keyword 2 keyword 3 and so on... The exact keyword stuffed combination present on every page of the website A bunch of clearly self made links from poor quality forums and directories with little or no Page Rank Links exchanged across the microsites How do you explain your way out of this when this hard evidence is sat in front of you undermining your great pitch?

• Managing user privileges, best practices [on hold]

  I'm am new to web development. I'm creating a website where different user can have different privileges, such as creating/editing/deleting a news, or adding/editing/deleting whatever kind of content on the website. I started by creating a "user type" that would indicate the user's privileges (such as "user", "newser", "moderator", "admin", and so on), but I quickly started noticing issues that made me think that this might be a naive approach to this issue. What if I want to give a regular user the right to edit a news (for whatever reason)? Then the user would be half "user", half "newser". But the system I use can only handle one user-type. So what would be the best practice here? I was thinking of removing the concept of roles (or "user-types" such as newser) and only have the concept of "privilege", where every user could have zero to many privileges. So, to re-use the above example, if I wanted a user to have the right to edit some news, I would only have to give him a "edit news" privilege. Is this the way to go?

  I have just installed the Ubuntu 11.10 and facing challenges connecting to Internet using Ethernet connection. Below is the configuration details: IP address: 172.19.40.16 Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0 Default gateway: 172.19.40.1 When I run the command ifconfig I don't find the IP address in inet addr: Even when I try to change the Network device to "Ethernet" in Network tools, the changes are not getting saved.
