• How can I disable the CTRL-ALT-DEL key combination completely on XP/Vista/7?

  I have been googling extensively to figure this out, and nobody seems to be able to give a direct answer. Let me start by saying that I'm NOT talking about requiring CTRL-ALT-DEL to enter logon information. I'm working on a golf simulator program which is used at golf centers. I need the ability to completely disable the CTRL-ALT-DEL key sequence so that the golf center customers can't get out of the program and access the computer at all. I realize there are other key combinations that need to be handled as well, we already have this entire feature working in XP, but we're going to be switching to Windows 7 soon, and CTRL-ALT-DEL is the only one that doesn't seem to work in Win7. I'd really like an all-around solution if at all possible. This same program may also be installed on a client's personal computer for an in-home golf simulator, but the computers that really need this feature (golf center computers) are provided to the golf center by us, so would the best option be to write a new shell? I don't know anything about that at all, other than others that suggest writing a new shell for kiosk mode. I'd really like a simpler option, like modifying the registry in some way. I have heard that you can remove some buttons from the menu screen that pops up, but unless I can remove pretty much all of them (including the shutdown/restart button in the bottom-right corner), this won't be enough of a solution for me. • Windows mobile phone for business application - or design way out of scrolling problem

  We have a business application written for Windows mobile. It has people doing inventories. The fastest way to do this is to keep one hand on the product being counted and the other on the phone. The five-way lets you hit enter to accept the current correct inventory (the norm) or to move one left to remove one. This is very fast. If I am two low, I have a quick glance at the phone- move my eyes back to count the next row - and with my right hand hit the five way "left left enter". Very fast. Our problem is that with I-Mate out of business, we cannot find a modern cell phone that has a decent size screen and a five way. Everyone is going to candy bar and flicks. That works great if it is two hands and you are looking at the phone, but not efficient for us. Other than the $1,500 ruggadized units, is there anybody who makes a business style Windows Mobile with a five way? If not, any ideas on how to design the phone to make it easier without a five way to quickly enter data like this?

  Hey all, i have been trying for a few minutes on this problem and i can not seem to figure out how to correct it. I tend to have the hardest time doing stuff like this when it involves more than one varable within the function.   I am currently working on an application that allows reverse geocoding using silverlight + bing maps.   I've already worked out this solution for myself with PHP, but I'm curious how it could be done differently - better even. The two languages I'm primarily interested in are PHP and Javascript, but I'd be interested in seeing how quickly this could be done in any other major language today as well (mostly C#, Java, etc). Return only words with an occurrence greater than X Return only words with a length greater than Y Ignore common terms like "and, is, the, etc" Feel free to strip punctuation prior to processing (ie. "John's" becomes "John") Return results in a collection/array Extra Credit Keep Quoted Statements together, (ie. • Learning about the low level

  I'm interested in learning more about the PC from a lower (machine) level. I graduated from a school which taught us concepts using the Java language which abstracted out that level almost completely. As a result I only learned a bit from the one required assembly language course. In order to cram in ASM and quite a few details about architecture, it was hard to get a very deep picture of what is going on there. At work I focus on unix socket programming in C, so i'm much closer to the hardware now, but I feel I should learn a bit more about what streams really are, how memory management and paging works, what goes on when you call "paint()" on a graphics buffer, etc. I missed out on a lot of this and i'm looking for a good resource to get me started. I've heard a lot about the "Pink Book" by Peter Norton (Programmer's Guide to the IBM PC, Programmer's Guide to inside the PC, etc). It seems like this is on the right track, however the original is quite out dated and the newer ones have had conflicting reviews, with many people saying to stay away from it. I'm not sure what the SO crowd thinks about this book or if they have some suggestions for similar books, online resources, etc that may be good primers for this sort of thing. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

• IE6 - too much spacing appearing above h3, how do I get rid of it?

  Example: http://bit.ly/dfjvmT If you take a look at that URL, you will see an <h3> labeled "Send Us Your Resume". Problem is -- in IE6, it has too much space at the top. It's supposed to be margin-top of 16px, but in IE6, it appears more like 24-30px. I have a reset.css file which has zeroed all margins and paddings, so it's not that. Just checked, both CSS and XHTML are valid. And I notice this spacing error only appears when I put a before this <h3>. Currently, I have <div class="top"></div> which appears before this <h3>. That part takes care of rounded corners for the container. When I remove that <div>, the spacing finally matches in both IE6 and Firefox. Of course, I need to use that <div> for rounded corners. So I'm wondering, what exactly is causing this problem, and is there a way to fix it? Thanks

• P6 Architecture - Register renaming aside, does the limited user registers result in more ops spent

  I'm studying JIT design with regard to dynamic languages VM implementation. I haven't done much Assembly since the 8086/8088 days, just a little here or there, so be nice if I'm out of sorts. As I understand it, the x86 (IA-32) architecture still has the same basic limited register set today that it always did, but the internal register count has grown tremendously, but these internal registers are not generally available and are used with register renaming to achieve parallel pipelining of code that otherwise could not be parallelizable. I understand this optimization pretty well, but my feeling is, while these optimizations help in overall throughput and for parallel algorithms, the limited register set we are still stuck with results in more register spilling overhead such that if x86 had double, or quadruple the registers available to us, there may be significantly less push/pop opcodes in a typical instruction stream? Or are there other processor optmizations that also optimize this away that I am unaware of? Basically if I've a unit of code that has 4 registers to work with for integer work, but my unit has a dozen variables, I've got potentially a push/pop for every 2 or so instructions. Any references to studies, or better yet, personal experiences?

I think it something to do with the 'show/hide editor'. By default it goes into the WYSIWYG editor, so when updating static block i don't see any other solution than 1."hide the editor' by clicking 'show/hide editor' 2.delete the old code from the editor 3. get code that doesn't miss the DIVs 4. The existing issue is that the input to the form, only displays on the console and not on jsfiddle result section, though no error displays on the result section, there is a new error appearing in the console of the updated fiddle: Uncaught Error: Cannot perform operations on a Metamorph that is not in the DOM. Finally solved I needed to comment out App.initialize() for it to work as expected. This the working fiddle ** http://jsfiddle.net/ACzaJ/20/. I don't know why that is so, but my guess is that, App.initialize works with other parts like the router for routing, ApplicationController and ApplicationView with {{outlet}} in the handlebars, which i didn't need for this fiddle. Finally Finally and completely solved This ** http://jsfiddle.net/tQWn8/ works with App.initialize. But you have to declare all those components above and pass the router to App.initialize, like this App..initialize(router). • MySQL is running VERY slow on CentOS 6x (not 5x)

  I have two servers: a VPS and a laptop. I recently re-built both of them, and MySQL is running about 20 times slower on the laptop. Both servers used to run CentOS 5.8 and I think MySQL 5.1, and the laptop used to do great so I do not think it is the hardware. For the VPS, my provider installed CentOS 6.4, and then I installed MySQL 5.1.69 using yum with the CentOS repo. For the laptop, I installed CentOS 6.4 basic server and then installed MySQL 5.1.69 using yum with the CentOS repo. my.cnf for both servers are identical, and I have shown below. For both servers, I've also included below the output from SHOW VARIABLES; as well as output from sysbench, file system information, and cpu information. I have tried adding skip-name-resolve, but it didn't help. The matrix below shows the SHOW VARIABLES output from both servers which is different. Again, MySQL was installed the same way, so I do not know why it is different, but it is and I think this might be why the laptop is executing MySQL so slowly. Why is the laptop running MySQL slowly, and how do I fix it? • How to make a GRANT persist for a table that's being dropped and re-created?

  I'm on a fairly new project where we're still modifying the design of our Oracle 11g database tables. As such, we drop and re-create our tables fairly often to make sure that our table creation scripts work as expected whenever we make a change. Our database consists of 2 schemas. One schema has some tables with INSERT triggers which cause the data to sometimes be copied into tables in our second schema. This requires us to log into the database with an admin account such as sysdba and GRANT access to the first schema to the necessary tables on the second schema, e.g. GRANT ALL ON schema_two.SomeTable TO schema_one; Our problem is that every time we make a change to our database design and want to drop and re-create our database tables, the access we GRANT-ed to schema_one went away when the table was dropped. Thus, this creates another annoying step wherein we must log in with an admin account to re-GRANT the access every time one of these tables is dropped and re-created. This isn't a huge deal, but I'd love to eliminate as many steps as possible from our development and testing procedures. Is there any way to GRANT access to a table in such a way that the GRANT-ed permissions survive a table being dropped and then re-created? And if this isn't possible, then is there a better way to go about this?

  I have a set of Excel 2000 SP3 worksheets that have Pivot Tables that get data from an Access 2000 SP3 database created by a contractor who left our company. Unfortunately, he did all his work on his private area on the company (Novell) network and now that he has left us, the drive spec has been deleted and is invalid. We were able to get the database files restored to our network area by our IT Service Desk people, but we now have to re-link everything to point to our group area instead of the now-nonexistent private area. If I follow the advice given elsewhere on this site (open wizard, click 'Back' to get to 'Step 2 of 3', click 'Get Data...' I get a message that the old filespec is an invalid path and I need to check that the path name is invalid and that I am connected to the server on which the file resides. I then click on OK and get a Login dialog with a 'Database...' button on the right. I click this and get a 'Select Database' dialog which allows me to choose the appropriate database in its correct new location. I then click OK, which takes me back to the 'Login' screen. I can confirm that it has accepted my new location by clicking on 'Database...' as before and the NEW location is still shown. So far so good - but if I then click on OK I get two unhelpful messages - first I get one saying that Excel 'Could not use '|'; file already in use.' - although no other files are in use. Clicking on OK takes me back to the 'Login' dialog. Clicking OK again gives me the same message as before telling me that the OLD filespec is invalid (as if I hadn't changed anything) - but clicking on the 'Database...' button shows that the correct (NEW) database location is still selected. Can anyone tell me a way of using VBA to change the link information without having to spend hours fighting the PivotTable Wizard - preferably similar to this way you update an Access Tabledef:- db.TableDefs(strLinkName).Connect = strNewLink db.TableDefs(strLinkName).RefreshLink Thanks!

• Which knowledge base/rule-based inference engine to choose for real time Runway incursion prevention

  Hello, we are designing a project that would listen to dialog between airport controllers and pilots to prevent runway incursions (eg. one airplane is taking off while other is crossing the runway). Our professor wants us to use Jena for knowledge base (or anything else but it should be some sort of rule-based engine). Inference is not the main thing in Jena and there's not much documentation and examples of this. So we need an engine that would get messages from pilots as input and output possible risks of incursion or any other error in message protocol. It should be easy to write rules, and should be easy to provide engine with real time data. I image it something like this: A pilot sends a message that he lands on some runway, the system remembers that the runway is busy and no one should cross it If someone is given an instruction to cross this runway, the engine should fire a rule that something is wrong When the pilot sends a message that he left the runway and goes to the gate, the system clears the runway and lets other planes to use it. So is Jena, or prolog or any other rules engine suitable for this? I mean it is suitable, but do we really need to use it? I asked the prof. if we could just keep state of the runway and use some simple checks based on messages we receive and he said that it is not scalable and we need the knowledge base. Can someone give me any advise on which approach to use for this system? If you recommend k.b., then which one should we use? The project is written in java. Thank you.

  I've got a drop-down where the user selects a Country. It is a required "field". Next to it, there is a textfield named State. If the user selects US, then the field State is required. If the user selects e.g. Sweden, the State is not required, since Sweden has no states. • WCF Custom Delegation/Authentication without Kerberos

  I'm building a simple WCF service, probably exposed via HTTPS, using NTLM security. Since not all users are going to be capable of using the service directly, we're writing a simple web front-end for the service. Users will auth with HTML to the web front-end. What we want is a way to delegate the user of the web site all the way to the WCF service. I understand Kerberos delegation can do this, but that's not available to us. What I want to do is make the web front-end account a specially trusted account, so that if a request hits the WCF service authenticated as "DOMAIN\WebApp", we read a WCF message header containing the real identity, then switch the principal to that and continue as normal. Is there any "simple" way of achieving this? Should I give up entirely on this idea, and instead make users "sign-in" to the WCF app and then do complete custom auth? The WCF extensibility and security options seem so vast, I'd like to get a heads up on which path to start heading down.

• How to call a C# DLL from InstallerClass overrides?

  I have a setup and deployment project. In it I have an Installer.cs class, created from the basic Installer Class template. In the Install override, I have this code taken from http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/d9k65z2d.aspx. public override void Install(IDictionary stateSaver) { base.Install(stateSaver); System.Diagnostics.Process.Start("http://www.microsoft.com"); } Everything works when I install the application, but the problem arises when I try to call anything from an external C# class library that I also wrote. Example: public override void Install(IDictionary stateSaver) { base.Install(stateSaver); System.Diagnostics.Process.Start("http://www.microsoft.com"); MyLibrary.SomeMethod(); } The problem is, I don't believe the library call is actually happening. I tagged the entire process line by line, with EventLog.WriteEvent()s, and each line in the Install override is seemlingly 'hit', putting entries in the event log, but I do not receive any exceptions for the library call SomeMethod(), yet the EventLog entries and other actions inside SomeMethod() are never created nor any of its actions taken. Any ideas?

  I am writing a basic function to convert millions of names (one time batch process) from their current form, which is all upper case, to a proper mixed case. I came up with the following so far: public string ConvertToProperNameCase(string input) { TextInfo textInfo = new CultureInfo("en-US", false).TextInfo; char[] chars = textInfo.ToTitleCase(input.ToLower()).ToCharArray(); for (int i = 0; i + 1 < chars.Length; i++) { if ((chars[i].Equals('\'')) || (chars[i].Equals('-'))) { chars[i + 1] = Char.ToUpper(chars[i + 1]); } } return new string(chars);; } It works in most cases such as: JOHN SMITH - John Smith SMITH, JOHN T - Smith, John T JOHN O'BRIAN - John O'Brian JOHN DOE-SMITH - John Doe-Smith There are some edge cases that do no work like: JASON MCDONALD - Jason Mcdonald (Correct: Jason McDonald) OSCAR DE LA HOYA - Oscar De La Hoya (Correct: Oscar de la Hoya) MARIE DIFRANCO - Marie Difranco (Correct: Marie DiFranco) These are not captured and I am not sure if I can handle all these odd edge cases. Can anyone think of anything I could change or add to capture more edge case? I am sure there are tons of edge cases I am not even thinking of as well. All casing should following North American conventions too meaning that if certain countries expect a specific capitalization format, and that differs from the North American format, then the North American format takes precedence.

Is there a way to have linq working with this ValueTypes? Update: Using NHibernate.UserTypes.IUserType it sortof works.
