• Neither Invalidate() nor Refresh() invokes OnPaint()

  I'm trying to get from Line #1 to Line #2 in the below code: using System; using System.Windows.Forms; namespace MyNameSpace { internal class MyTextBox : System.Windows.Forms.TextBox { protected override void OnEnabledChanged(EventArgs e) { base.OnEnabledChanged(e); Invalidate(); // Line #1 - can get here Refresh(); } protected override void OnPaint(PaintEventArgs e) { base.OnPaint(e); System.Diagnostics.Debugger.Break(); // Line #2 - can't get here } } } However, it seems that neiter Invalidate() nor Refresh() causes OnPaint(PaintEventArgs e) to be invoked. Two questions: Why doesn't it work? If it can't be fixed: I only want to invoke OnPaint(PaintEventArgs e) in order to access the e.Graphics object - is there any other way to do this?

• Optimising SQL distance query

  I'm running an MySQL query that returns results based on location. However I have noticed recently that its really slowing down my PHP app. I used CodeIgniter and the profiler shows the query taking 4.2seconds. The geoname table has 500,000 rows. I have some indexes on the key columns, how else can speed up this query? • How can I retain carriage returns when I'm encrypting data?

  I have this following setup, a textarea named with some data in it that may have carriage returns and another textarea that has style='display:none' in order to make it hidden as follows: <textarea id="myTextarea" onBlur="encryptMyData()"></textarea> <textarea name="encryptedText" style='display:none'></textarea> the user enters data in the first textarea and when that text area loses focus the 'encryptMyData()' javascript function is calling an ajax call to take whatever the user entered in the first textfield, encrypt it using rijndael, and paste it in the encryptedText textarea so that it is stored in the database later. Now what I need to do is this, find a way to convert the carriage returns before encryption to a tag like so [cr] so that when I retrieve the data, all formatting is retained. Any idea how I do this? I'm using asp.net and c# to perform the encryption.

• Architecture choice about representation of collections in Business Objects

  I have made certain choices in my architecture which I request the community to review and comment. I am breaking up the post in smaller sections to make it easier to understand the context and then suggest/comment. I am sorry that the post is long, but is required to explain the context. What am I building A typical business application where there are application users, security roles, business operation/action rights based on roles and several business modules like Stock Receive, Stock Transfer, Sale Order, Sale Invoice, Sale Return, Stock Audit etc. and several reports. The application is a WinForm application since it has a lot of rich and responsive UI requirements and has to operate in disconnected mode (with a local SQL Server), most of the time. What have I done I have built a framework - nothing to boast about, but just a set of libraries that serves the repetative requirements of my application, e.g. authentication, role based authorization, data access, validation, exception handling, logging, change status tracking, presentation model compliance and reasonable loose coupling between components. No, I have not written everything from scratch, you can say I have consolidated many things together like some concepts from CSLA, Martin Fowler for Presentation Model, blocks from Enterprise Library, Unity etc. to build a set of libraries that will help my developers be productive quickly without having to look up Google for many of the technical requirements. I have tried to keep the framework generic so that it can be used in typical business applications and also tried to follow some best practices that will support the same Business Objects to be used in an ASP.NET MVC environment also. My present architecture serves my objectives well, and have built several modules (on WinForm) without much trouble. The architecture also lent itself well to build some usable prototype on ASP.NET MVC with the same set of business objects, without changing a single line of code. My Dilemma I have used Custom Business Objects since that gives me a clearer OOP representation of the problem scope in my solution scope, and helps me visualize my entire solution as collection of objects with data and behavior rather than having a set of relational data (DataSet) and implement behaviours (business logic, validation) etc. separately. With rich databinding support in .NET 2.0 binding Custom Business Objects to UI was a breeze. Now while building my business objects, I am still in a dilemma about representation of collections in business objects. Currently I am using DataSets to represent collections while I have seen many suggestions to implement custom collections. For example, in my vision, a typical Sale Invoice Object will contain 'Sales Invoice Items' as a collection. Now theoritically, I can accept that the each 'Sales Invoice Item' should have its own behavior along with their data (ItemCode, Name, Qty, Price etc.) but typically managing of Sale Invoice Items in a Sale Invoice is handled by the Sale Invoice Object itself, e.g. adding/removing Items from collection. Additionally, we can also put business logic/rules for the Sales Invoice Items like "Qty should not be greater than the ordered qty", "Price should be max 10% above the price in Sale Order" etc. in the Sale Invoice object itself. With that kind of a vision, I felt that most business object child collections can be managed by the parent itself, including add/remove from collection as well and implementing business logic for the collection items, hence the collection items hold nothing but data. Additionally, typical collections are represented in UI in Grids, where ability to support DataBinding becomes very important for any collection. Implementing a custom collection, in that case would also mean, I have to implement robust DataBinding support as well, for the collection, which is of course time consuming. Now, considering child collection behaviors are implemented in the parent and the need for DataBinding of child collections, I chose DataSet to represent any child collection in my business objects. In the above example of Sale Invoice I will have 'Invoice Number', 'Date', 'Customer' etc. as attributes of the 'Sale Invoice' but 'InvoiceItems' as a DataSet. Of course, when I say DataSet, it is not a vanilla dataset but an extended DataSet that supports business rule validation and the same role based security model of my framework to allow/deny any business operation to rows/columns of the DataSet, automatically. This approach has allowed easier collection management and databinding in my business objects and my developers are able to deliver modules rapidly. Questions Do you feel that the approach is reasonable? Do you see any shortcomings of this approach? I am recently thinking of using 'Typed DataSets' as child collections, for easier representation in code, that will allow me to write 'currentInvoice.InvoiceItems' (for the DataTable) and 'invoiceItem.ProductCode' or 'invoiceItem.Qty', instead of 'drow["ProductCode"].ToString()' or '(int)drow["Qty"]' etc. Does this choice have any demerits?   I have the following query: select ............. from //one table and about 20 left joins// where ( ( this_.driverName like 'blah*' or this_.renterName like 'blah*' ) or exists ( select this0__.id as y0_ from ThirdParty this0__ where this0__.name like 'blah*' and this0__.claim_id=this_.id ) ) order by this_.id asc And I have two environment: One with 175 000 records in table "this_" and second with 25 000 records in table "this_". This query works right on 175k database and it works smth about 2 seconds, but on base with 25k this query freezes. and if drop one the folloing item from where clause: ( this_.driverName like 'blah*' or this_.renterName like 'blah*' ) or exists ( select this0__.id as y0_ from ThirdParty this0__ where this0__.name like 'blah*' and this0__.claim_id=this_.id ) query runs normally. How can I to increase performance of this query?

  In C# it is possible to concatenate strings in several different ways: Using the concatenation operator: var newString = "The answer is '" + value + "'."; Using String.Format: var newString = String.Format("The answer is '{0}'.", value); Using String.Concat: var newString = String.Concat("The answer is '", value, "'."); What are the advantages / disadvantages of each of these methods? When should I prefer one over the others? The question arises because of a debate between developers. One never uses String.Format for concatenation - he argues that this is for formatting strings, not for concatenation, and that is is always unreadable because the items in the string are expressed in the wrong order. The other frequently uses String.Format for concatenation, because he thinks it makes the code easier to read, especially where there are several sets of quotes involved. Both these developers also use the concatenation operator and String.Builder, too.

• [Web] Eventlistener for form input on iphone?

  I'm playing around with jQTouch to create a web app on the iPhone. I'm using the scrolling extension to create the effect of a fixed toolbar on the top of the page while still able to scroll the rest of the page via a scrollable div. Everything works fine except for when a user pulls up the keyboard in order to fill in form elements in the scrollable div. The whole body is pushed to top and the ugly url bar is shown. Is there a way to prevent this?

• How to structure Python package that contains Cython code

  I'd like to make a Python package containing some Cython code. I've got the the Cython code working nicely. However, now I want to know how best to package it. For most people who just want to install the package, I'd like to include the .c file that Cython creates, and arrange for setup.py to compile that to produce the module. Then the user doesn't need Cython installed in order to install the package. But for people who may want to modify the package, I'd also like to provide the Cython .pyx files, and somehow also allow for setup.py to build them using Cython (so those users would need Cython installed). How should I structure the files in the package to cater for both these scenarios? The Cython documentation gives a little guidance. But it doesn't say how to make a single setup.py that handles both the with/without Cython cases.

  I'm using a button in a template field of gridview. On button click I want to redirect to another page but it throws an exception: Invalid postback or callback argument. Event validation is enabled using in configuration or <%@ Page EnableEventValidation="true" % in a page. For security purposes, this feature verifies that arguments to postback or callback events originate from the server control that originally rendered them. If the data is valid and expected, use the ClientScriptManager.RegisterForEventValidation method in order to register the postback or callback data for validation. What can I do to resolve this problem?

I know that there are some applications (task managers), but I would like to write my own, simple application. I would like to write simple task manager, just list of all process and button which will kill some of them. Com4j generates Java interfaces from COM definitions "often found in .ocx, .dll, .exe, and/or .tlb files" . It was easy for me to locate the .ocx file of my target COM object, but I have no clue regarding the standard interface iStream. Microsoft's documentation mentions OLE32.DLL ( c:\Windows\Windows32\Ole32.dll ?) , but neither the com4j generator nor oleviewer succeed in opening this file. Any hints?

  Our web applications are using LDAP Membership Provider to authenticate and register users in Active Directory. In order to allow users to provide usernames that exist in other applications, we need to add a prefix in its username and it should be as transparent and painless as possible. What I need is a way to extend the LDAP Membership Provider to be able to add (concatenate) a prefix to the username just before Membership authenticate or register it. For example, if user input is "JohnS" in application 1... I want to authenticate: "App1_JohnS". How could I extend the membership to accomplish this? Any idea what is triggered just before authenticate and register (create user)? Update: Each web app has an "OU" in AD where create users to and authenticate from. But as it is just ONE Active Directory Controller the usernames must be unique. We need to solve this issue using Membership providers and not adding more ADs.

Since it's very easy to reverse engineer an android app, one can simply find the url where the data is sent to and manipulate it. I thought about creating a registration based on IMEI, but one can still able to manipulate it for his malicious purposes. I have also checked OAuth but I didn't really understand how it works and if it can help in my condition. What can I do to fully secure my application? Thanks in advance!   let's see if I can ask this in an understandable way... I started with grails and created a domain class called user. As far as I understand, Hibernate is used to map this domain class to the database. This works pretty fine with hsqldb. Now I tried to switch to javaDB and get an error message because the table is called "user" (which seems to be a reserved word for javaDB). So a statement like create table user ... will result in an error message. create table "user" ... works, but Hibernate seems not put put the table name in quotes. How can I configure Hibernate to use quotes in order to make it work with my table name? PS: yes, I know, I could map the domain class to another table name... :-)

• Polymorphism in SQL database tables?

  I currently have multiple tables in my database which consist of the same 'basic fields' like: name character varying(100), description text, url character varying(255) But I have multiple specializations of that basic table, which is for example that tv_series has the fields season, episode, airing, while the movies table has release_date, budget etc. Now at first this is not a problem, but I want to create a second table, called linkgroups with a Foreign Key to these specialized tables. That means I would somehow have to normalize it within itself. One way of solving this I have heard of is to normalize it with a key-value-pair-table, but I do not like that idea since it is kind of a 'database-within-a-database' scheme, I do not have a way to require certain keys/fields nor require a special type, and it would be a huge pain to fetch and order the data later. So I am looking for a way now to 'share' a Primary Key between multiple tables or even better: a way to normalize it by having a general table and multiple specialized tables.

  I need to quit firefox and restart it in order for the applet to be refreshed... its anoying since i'm still programming it an the class files changes... am i missing some codes which makes it unable to refresh the applet and still take the one from the cache??? So I have a .jar applet in my website, a simulation game that spawns army whenever user clicks on the screen... however whenever I refresh the page, the previous army are still there on the screen.. I want it to be refreshed (as if we're just starting to run the application the first time). I already tried pressing CTRL+f5 but the trick doesn't seem to work I'd basically like to do it automatically using scripts or something, so that it won't require user to manually press some button on the keyboard Any Suggestions?   Given four points in the plane, A,B,X,Y, I wish to determine which of the following two angles is smaller ?ABX or ?ABY. I'd rather not use cos or sqrt, in order to preserve accuracy. In the case where A=(-1,0),B=(0,0), I can compare the two angles ?ABX and ?ABY, by calculating the dot product of the vectors X,Y, and watch it's sign. What I can do in this case is: Determine whether or not ABX turns right or left If ABX turns left check whether or not Y and A are on the same side of the line on segment BX. If they are - ?ABX is a smaller than ABY. If ABX turns right, then Y and A on the same side of BX means that ?ABX is larger than ?ABY. But this seems too complicated to me. Any simpler approach?

  I have a query that I'm trying to figure the "django" way of doing it: I want to take the last 100 calls from Call. Which is easy: calls = Call.objects.all().order_by('-call_time')[:100] However the next part I can't find the way to do it via django's ORM. I want to get a list of the call_types and the number of calls each one has WITHIN that previous queryset i just did. Normally i would do a query like this: "SELECT COUNT(id),calltype FROM call WHERE id IN ( SELECT id FROM call ORDER BY call_time DESC LIMIT 100 ) GROUP BY calltype;" I can't seem to find the django way of doing this particular query. A company I'm working with has given an 'API' that I can use to access orders, however, there are only two real commands, getorders and getorderdetails. These commands are put in the format of http://www.server.com/path/to/the/orderapi/getorders/UniqueKey/ If I go to that web address, I'm prompted for a username and password, and once authenticating, get presented with a page of JSON formatted order details, contained in the body of the html page. I would like a service to check this information and create orders in our crm based on it, is there an obvious way to access it without the browser/client interaction?
