• monitor internet bandwidth on LAN

  I'm on a office network and there are around 12 PCs that are connected to a switch and then to a Prolink Router. Now the Internet connection is very slow and I'm the one who manage all the computers. I want to monitor bandwidth usage of each computer on the LAN. how can I achieve this using my computer. I cannot install any software on the client computers other than mine. I tried wireshark but, it only shows my network usage so there is no use with the data I get from it. Is there any specific software that I can use within my PC to get the bandwidth details of other computers. I'm on a windows 7 x64bit PC with admin privileges. Thank you.

  Another annoying one for me but probably something simple. I have a number of possible where clauses for a query based on user input, my question is how can I add these programmatically? • Unexpected "waiting for localhost"?

  So I ran into something that kind of worried me today. Lately my computer has been kind of slow and I'm dealing with that, but today when I opened Facebook in Google Chrome, I noticed a message in the bottom left corner while it was loading the site that said "Waiting for localhost". It was brief and I managed to notice it because my computer is slower than it used to & it caused Chrome to hang briefly, long enough for me to read it. As I'm quite confident in that Facebook isn't running on my localhost, I'm wondering what could potentially make Chrome wait for localhost while I'm loading webpages from external servers. Is there a malware of some kind that I should be worrying about? Unfortunately I have no other information than this to go on, and I have no idea how to further investigate this, if it generated any logs or whatever. I'd appreciate any help in figuring out this matter!

• Wifi Signal Strengths

  I hope that I have asked this question in the right topic. Basically I use BT (In the U.K.) and I have problems with my router receiving a strong signal in certain rooms of the house, which, therefore makes the internet really slow in some cases it won't work at all. I have had experience working with Virgin Media (UK) before and just changed the channel number and this worked fine, but, do not know if I would receive the same outcome on BT. Could anyone suggest any other things that I could try alongside of the channel change in order to /hopefully/ get a stronger signal, without having to install Ethernet cable?

• Installed Ubuntu on usb drive, now it's read-only and can't be formatted

  I installed Ubuntu (ubuntu-13.04-desktop-amd64) on a 8 gb pendrive. Because it worked pretty slow, I wanted to change it back to a normal pendrive. But this is what happened. Windows7 can't open the usb drive, can't view files or anything, can't access attributes. When I select to format, it says it can't format it because it is write-protected. Tried the same running from an Ubuntu, and trying from a booted GParted thing. When I view the partitions, they can't be deleted either. What should I do to get it formatted?

  How do I set the redeliveryPolicy in ActiveMQ on a Queue? 1) In the doc, see: activeMQ Redelivery, the explain that you should set it on the ConnectionFactory or Connection. But I want to use different value's for different Queue's. 2) Apart from that, I don't seem to get it work. • Is it possible for a router to "go bad" with time?

  I've been having problems with my internet connection over the past weeks (intermittent disconnections, slow transfers, etc), and my provider keeps telling me that the problem is not on their end. I have cablemodem with a wifi router (this router was not provided by them). The router is quite old (DIR-300), so I'm starting to wonder if it could be the issue and if I should replace it. Is it possible that it is the cause? Can they become so outdated that they cause intermittent interruptions of service? If I reset the modem and the router, they work fine for a few hours, but the problems starts again after a while.

• accessing external mysql server through "ssh tunnel" - any drawbacks?

  In an upcoming project I have a two server setup: one is the application server and another, already existing runs the mysql server with databases I need to access. I contacted the server admin of the mysql server and the only way I can access the remote mysql databases is via "SSH tunnel". I have never done this before and never heard of it so far, so my question, are there any drawbacks, e. g. performance wise? Isnt it rather slow compared to directly accessing the mysql server on its default port?

  I have a web page that when I run it on a remote computer I get the message saying that remote errors cannot be viewed When I go to view it on my web server machine, I get a message saying: Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage • Most likely causes: • You are not connected to the Internet. • The website is encountering problems. • There might be a typing error in the address. What you can try: Check your Internet connection. Try visiting another website to make sure you are connected. Retype the address. Go back to the previous page. I can get to google fine, so it is not the internet connection.... But this message gives me nothing to work on. How can I get more info as to why my page is not working? I tried going to IIS Mananger and right clicking on the site and selecting browse. But my site is an HTTPS site so that does not work. Any ideas would be great.

  In one of our existing C programs which purpose is: Open connection to DB for record in all_record: if record contain certain data: if record is NOT in table A: // see #1 insert record information into table A and B // see #2 Close connection to DB select field from table where field=XXX 2 inserts This is typically done every X months to sync everything up or so I'm told. I've also been told that this process takes roughly a couple of days. There is (currently) at most 2.5million records (though not necessarily all 2.5m will be inserted). One of the table contains 10 fields and the other 5 fields. There isn't much to be done about iterating through the records since that part can't be changed at the moment. What I would like to do is speed up the part where I query MySQL. I'm not sure if I have left out any important details -- please let me know! I'm also no SQL expert so feel free to point out the obvious. I thought about: Putting all the inserts into a transaction (at the moment I'm not sure how important it is for the transaction to be all-or-none or if this affects performance) Using Insert X Where Not Exists Y LOAD DATA INFILE (but that would require I create a (possibly) large temp file) I read that (hopefully someone can confirm) I should drop indexes so they aren't re-calculated. mysql Ver 14.7 Distrib 4.1.22, for sun-solaris2.10 (sparc) using readline 4.3

  I want to seperate my server into two parts: web server and dbserver. My web server is located in Turkey and my dbserver is located in Germany. I cant change my web server because my agreement is based on my Ip adresses. I want to locate my dbserver in Germany because more cheap then Turkey. But... I have a problem in here. When you call a db action, first, you are going to Turkey for IIS and IIS is going to Germany for Dbserver. It is too far and so slow to response back. Any idea? Is it wrong that the distance is so far between web server and dbserver? Or Are there any solutions for this problem?

• Website project takes a long time to load in VS.NET 2008

  After getting a new computer (a lot faster than the one I've used before) my Solutions take A LONG TIME (3-4 minutes) to load up in VS.NET 2008. I only have 2 projects in the solution: DB Project and Website Project (from IIS). If I remove the Website Project from Solution - it loads up instantly, when I add that same website project to the OPEN Solution - it loads up instantly. The only time it's slow is when I open the solution referencing my Website project. I had the exact same setup (as far as VS is concerned) on my old box, and never had this problem. Any ideas?

• Setup a local file server for two networks

  Hi I would like to setup a local linux file server (using centos and samba) that can be accessed by two independent local networks in the same house. I have 2 networks on the same floor which have Windows 7 computers, but the networks are split as we have 2 internet connections. How do I go about this? Additional info: Currently both the networks use DropBox to send files to each other but that happens via the Internet and hence its slow. Would like to achieve the same locally to increase the speed.

• Access to SQL Server 2005 from a non-domain machine using Windows authentication

  Hi, I have a Windows domain within which a machine is running SQL Server 2005 and which is configured to support only Windows authentication. I would like to run a C# client application on a machine on the same network, but which is NOT on the domain, and access a database on the SQL Server 2005 instance. I thought that it would be a simple matter of doing something like this: string connectionString = "Data Source=server;Initial Catalog=database;User Id=domain\user;Password=password"; SqlConnection connection = new SqlConnection(connectionString); connection.Open(); However, this fails: the client-side error is: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Login failed for user 'domain\user' and the server-side error is: Error 18456, Severity 14, State 5 I have tried various things including setting integrated security to true and false, and \ instead of \ in the User Id, but without success. In general, I know that it possible to connect to the SQL Server 2005 instance from a non-domain machine (for example, I am working with a Linux-based application which happily does this), but I don't seem to be able to work out how to do it from a Windows machine. • Is it bad to put your computer in sleep mode every time?

  Often I have a lot of stuff open and don't feel like shutting down my laptop, so I just use sleep mode when I'm transferring it. But I have no idea if this might have any disadvantages. So my question is: is it bad to put your computer in sleep mode every time? Things I'm wondering: Should I turn off my computer every once in a while? Will continuous use of sleep mode slow down my system in any way? Are there any bad side effects (in the long term)? Any thoughts? FYI I'm using Windows 7 on a laptop

• Best tool for writing a Programming Book?

  Well, this is not directly programming related! But a friend of mine wants to write a book about programming. Now he asked me if I knew a good software for this, because Word crashes 10 times a day on his machine, and OpenOffice is just very chunky and slow. Also none of them seem to have any useful support for including Code Listings (examples) with useful syntax highlighting or at least some sort of support for inserting code (i.e. indicating line breaks with arrows that turn around, line numbers, etc). Latex is out of question since it's incredible hard to use and has no really useful feature for including tables. It's a mess. Maybe some IT authors are here who can give some hints what tools they use. That would be great!

• Site faster on 1 core/1GB ram than on 8 core/32GB ram wth?

  Both sites are US based. I'm located in Europe. http://198.105.209.13/ <==== site that loads tons faster on 1 core and 1gb ram ONLY (Cent OS VPS) http://108.61.35.219/ <== site is located on my dedicated server with i7-3770 cpu and 32 gb ram (Windows) and is slow as hell Even if faster site is on linux it shouldn't make such a big difference in page load seriously. Does anyone know what could be a hiccup on the dedicated server? It's just unbelievable to me that site loads faster on 1 core cpu than on dedicated server. Note that site is pretty much only thing running on dedicated server. It has 1gbps connection.

• Why could "insert (...) values (...)" not insert a new row?

  Hi, I have a simple SQL insert statement of the form: insert into MyTable (...) values (...) It is used repeatedly to insert rows and usually works as expected. It inserts exactly 1 row to MyTable, which is also the value returned by the Delphi statement AffectedRows:= myInsertADOQuery.ExecSQL. After some time there was a temporary network connectivity problem. As a result, other threads of the same application perceived EOleExceptions (Connection failure, -2147467259 = unspecified error). Later, the network connection was reestablished, these threads reconnected and were fine. The thread responsible for executing the insert statement described above, however, did not perceive the connectivity problems (No exceptions) - probably it was simply not executed while the network was down. But after the network connectivity problems myInsertADOQuery.ExecSQL always returned 0 and no rows were inserted to MyTable anymore. After a restart of the application the insert statement worked again as expected. For SQL Server, is there any defined case where an insert statment like the one above would not insert a row and return 0 as the number of affected rows? Primary key is an autogenerated GUID. There are no unique or check constraints (which should result in an exception anyway rather than not inserting a row). Are there any known ADO bugs (Provider=SQLOLEDB.1)?   I repeat the following idiom again and again. I read from a large file (sometimes, up to 1.2 million records!) and store the output into an SQLite databse. Currently, I am inserting into the database every time after loop2 finishes so that I don't have to deal with running out RAM. What could I do to speed up "loop 2"?

• How to make googlebot to crawl a page? [closed]

  What is the best way of forcing googlebot to crawl the page? I've put up Google analytics, registered site with Google webmaster. I've done great deal of SEO work on the website with keywords and titles, I took care of microdata. I submitted the site anonymously, I successfully fetched the site and submit for indexing couple of days ago and still nothing. Last time googlebot visited the site is almost 1 month ago and the indexed content is now obsolete. Am I missing something? or is it just a slow process??

• Multiple monitors (3) in notebook using HDMI and vga port, with a graphic card only.

  I have a HP dv9830us laptop. It has a vga-out and a hdmi-out port. I want to know if it's possible to use 3 devices, each one with different displays, using just one graphic card - NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS? (Original, vga with an external monitor and hdmi with a full hd tv). Where I can find this kind of information? If not possible, I would like to know alternatives like: "Usb" solutions to be possible to connect to the external lcd or to a TV. The TV should be flawless, but the second monitor can have slow response times; Cheap PCMCIA video cards to be possible to connect to an external monitor, so I would use the hdmi with the tv and this second video card to output to another monitor. I'm using Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.04. Is this possible in both systems?

• Installation stuck on "Installation Type" screen

  I am trying to install Ubuntu 11.10 with Windows 7 from a CD. I am using an HP Pavilion dm4. I've never used Ubuntu (or any Linux) before. Everything goes alright until I get to the "Installation Type" screen. Instead of giving me options, it just has a blank menu, and all the buttons are disabled. When I click "Continue", it gives me an error saying that it can't find the root or something like that. The trial version works fine, but I can't actually install it. Everything on the trial version is really slow, presumably because everything is on the CD or the Windows partition. I did some research, but the only post I could find was http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1870478 Where the only advice is to format the entire drive, which I'm not willing to do. Any suggestions? I'm downloading 10.04 right now and I'm going to try with that instead. EDIT: 10.04 didn't work either. I got to the partitioning screen and got the same problem. I read some more forums, loaded up 11.10 trial from the disk, opened the Terminal and typed sudo apt-get remove dmraid and then y. Then I was actually able to see something on the "Installation type" page: "Erase disk and install Ubuntu" or "Something else". Which is weird, since Windows 7 should be installed. When I click Something Else, I get: /dev/sda /dev/sdb /dev/sdb1 (ntfs) (208 MB) (69 MB used) /dev/sdb2 (ntfs) (477542 MB) (unknown used) /dev/sdb3 (ntfs) (18085 MB) (16094 MB used) /dev/sdb4 (fat32) (4265 MB) (3084 MB used) I have no idea what any of this means. Also, my device for boot loader installation changed from /dev/sda to /dev/sda ATA SAMSUNG MZMPA032 (32.0 GB)
