  • Piping a bash variable into awk and storing the output

    Hello, To illustrate my problem, TEST="Hi my name is John" OUTP=`echo $TEST | awk '{print $3}'` echo $OUTP What I would expect this to do is pass the $TEST variable into awk and store the 3rd word into $OUTP. Instead I get "Hi: not found", as if it is expecting the input to be a file. If I pass just a string instead of a variable, however, there is no problem. What would be the best way to approach this?   • Table valued function only returns CLR error

    I have read-only access to a database that was set up for a third-party, closed-source app. Once group of (hopefully) useful table functions only returns the error: Failed to initialize the Common Language Runtime (CLR) v2.0.50727 with HRESULT 0x80131522. You need to restart SQL server to use CLR integration features. (severity 16) But in theory, the third-party app should be able to use the function (either directly or indirectly), so I'm convinced I'm not setting things up right. I'm very new to SQL Server, so I could be missing something obvious. Or I could be missing something really slight, I have no idea. Here is an example of a query that returns the above error: SELECT * FROM dbo.UncompressDataDateRange(4,'Apr 24 2010 12:00AM','Apr 30 2010 12:00AM') Where the function takes three parameters: The Data Set (int) -- basically the data has 6 classifications, and the giant table this should be pulling from has a column to indicate which is which. startDate (smalldatetime) endDate (smalldatetime) There are other, similar functions that expand on the same idea, all returning the same error. Quick Note: I'm not sure if this is relevant, but I was able to connect to the database via SQL Studio (but without the privs to script the functions as code), and a checked the dependency for the above sample function. It turns out that it is a dependent of a view that I have gotten to work, and that view is dependent of the larger, much-hairier data-table. This makes me think I should somehow be pointing the function at the results of the view, but I'm not seeing any documentation that shows how that is done.

  • [PHP] Dots and spaces in variable names from external sources are converted to underscores

    Trying a bit of AJAX, and I find that much of my data is littered with underscores! Documentation confirms that this is working as intended. Any way to pass my form information to PHP in tact? I'm using code igniter, so my pass looks like /controller/function/variable, receiving controller: controller{ function($v=0){#what once was hello world is now hello_world...} } I can't very well do an undo, data might contain an underscore.     Hi, I am implementing a full text search API for my rails apps, and so far have been having great success with Thinking Sphinx. I now want to implement a date range search, and keep getting the "bad value for range" error. Basically I am trying to have the API request pass in a "since" date to see all posts after a certain date. I am specifying that the date should be in the YYYY-MM-DD format. Thanks for your help.   • Converting Makefile to Visual Studio Terminology Questions (First time using VS)

    I am an old Unix guy who is converting a makefile based project over to Microsoft Visual Studio, I got tasked with this because I understand the Makefile which chokes VS's automatic import tools. I am sure there is a better way than what I am doing but we are making things fit into the customer's environment and that is driving my choices. So gmake is not a valid answer, even if it is the right one ;-) I just have a couple of questions on terminology that I think will be easy for an experienced (or junior) user to answer. Presently, a make all will generate several executables and a shared library. How should I structure this? Is it one "solution" with multiple projects? There is a body of common code (say 50%) that is shared between the various executable targets that is not in a formal library, if that matters. I thought I could just set up the first executable and then add targets for the others, but that does not seem to work. I know I am working against the tool, so what is the right way? I am also using Visual C++ 2010 Express to try and do this so that may also be a problem if support for multiple targets is not supported without using Visual C++ 2010 (insert superlative). Thanks, this is really one of those questions that should be answerable by a quick chat with the resident Windows Developer at the water cooler. So, I am asking at the virtual water cooler, I also spring for a virtual frosty beverage after work.

  • PHP strtotime() looks like it is expecting a Euro format

    I've been using PHP's strtotime() method to accept a date field on a form. I love how powerful it is, in how it will accept "Tomorrow", "Next Thursday", or (supposedly) any date representation and convert it to the Unix timestamp. It's been working great -- until yesterday. Someone entered "2-4-10" and instead of logging Feb 4th, 2010, it logged April 10, 2002! So it expected Y-M-D instead of M-D-Y. I thought maybe the problem was just using a 2-digit year, so we tried again with "2-4-2010". That logged April 2nd, 2010! At that point I just don't understand what strtotime() is doing. PHP.net says it expects a US English date format. Why then would it assume D-M-Y? Is there a way around this? Or do I have to stop using strtotime()? Note: I just now did a test. When you use slashes instead of hyphen/dashes, it works fine, even with 2/4/10. Why on earth does that matter? And if that's all it is, should I just run str_replace("-", "/", $input) on the form input before passing it to strtotime()?

If it dose and I knew that the function would only read the variable and never write to it, is it possible to pass a variable to the function without creating a copy of that variable or should I just leave that up to the compiler optimizations to do that automatically for me?

For the first 20 I do: averageThingMonthValue = ThingMonth.objects.filter(turbine__in=things[:20],timestamp__range="2009-01-01 00:00","2010-03-00:00")).aggregate(Avg('ThingMonthValue'))['ThingMonthValue__avg'] This works fine, and returns the desired value. For the last 5 I do: averageThingMonthValue = ThingMonth.objects.filter(turbine__in=things[20:],timestamp__range="2009-01-01 00:00","2010-03-00:00")).aggregate(Avg('ThingMonthValue'))['ThingMonthValue__avg'] But for this I get an SQL error: 'Only one expression can be specified in the select list when the subquery is not introduced with EXISTS.' The SQL query being used by django reads: SELECT AVG([ThingMonthSummary].[ThingMonthValue]) AS [ThingMonthValue__avg] FROM [ThingMonthSummary] WHERE ([ThingMonthSummary].[thing_id] IN (SELECT _row_num, [id] FROM ( SELECT ROW_NUMBER() OVER ( ORDER BY [AAAA].[id] ASC) as _row_num, [AAAA].[id] FROM ( SELECT U0.[id] FROM [Thing] U0 WHERE U0.[project_id] = 1 ) AS [AAAA]) as QQQ where 20 < _row_num) AND [ThingMonthSummary].[timestamp] BETWEEN '01/01/09 00:00:00' and '03/01/10 00:00:00') Any idea why it works for one slice of the Things and not the second?     The title is the error I'm getting, when I click load my program freezes. I assume its because I'm doing a statement inside a statement, but from what I see its the only solution to my issue.   • git doesn't show where code was removed.

    So I was tasked at replacing some dummy code that our project requires for historical compatibility reasons but has mysteriously dropped out sometime since the last release. Since disappearing code makes me nervous about what else might have gone missing but un-noticed I've been digging through the logs trying to find in what commit this handful of lines was removed. I've tried a number of things including "git log -S'add-visit-resource-pcf'", git blame, and even git bisect with a script that simply checks for the existence of the line but have been unable to pinpoint exactly where these lines were removed.     I'm having trouble following this guide to "extract" my interfaces and entities from my EAR to use them from another Web Application: I use NetBeans 6.8 and Glassfish 3.0.1 "Java Class Library" project contains all the entities and interfaces "Java EE Application" project class library added to the project, is packaged into the EAR contains EJB implementations, MDBs, Test "Java Web Application" project class library added to the project, is packaged into the WAR contains REST interface When I build and deploy the Web Application, all goes well. When I build the JEE application, I can see the jar-file (interfaces, entities) being included.     What ffmpeg settings should I use to convert a video into xvid with a mixed speed and quality ratio, using 2-passes, and alternativly 1 pass. I am trying to pass an array in a form GET but the URL looks like: /search?filter=foo&filter=bar&filter=green Is there a better way to pass this in MVC?   • IIS6 compressing static files, but not JSON requests

    I have IIS6 compression setup, and static content is being compressed correctly as per Coding Horror. Example of a static file: Response Headers Content-Length 55513 Content-Type application/x-javascript Content-Encoding gzip Last-Modified Mon, 20 Dec 2010 15:31:58 GMT Accept-Ranges bytes Vary Accept-Encoding Server Microsoft-IIS/6.0 X-Powered-By ASP.NET Date Wed, 29 Dec 2010 16:37:23 GMT Request Headers Accept */* Accept-Language en-us,en;q=0.5 Accept-Encoding gzip,deflate Accept-Charset ISO-8859-1,utf-8;q=0.7,*;q=0.7 Keep-Alive 115 Connection keep-alive As you can see, the response is correctly compressed. However with a JSON call you'll see the request with the gzip parameter correctly set: Accept application/json, text/javascript, */*; q=0.01 Accept-Language en-us,en;q=0.5 Accept-Encoding gzip,deflate Accept-Charset ISO-8859-1,utf-8;q=0.7,*;q=0.7 Keep-Alive 115 Connection keep-alive X-Requested-With XMLHttpRequest Then for the response: Cache-Control private Content-Length 6811 Content-Type application/json; charset=utf-8 Server Microsoft-IIS/6.0 X-Powered-By ASP.NET X-AspNet-Version 2.0.50727 X-AspNetMvc-Version 2.0 No gzip! I found this article by Rick Stahl, which outlines how to compress in your code, but I'd like IIS to handle this. Is this possible with IIS6?
