• When I make a database change, how do I know what needs to be removed and readded to the LinqToSql O

  For example, I alter a column in a table to be not null from null. I need to then delete and readd the table. That part is pretty clear. What about views, functions, and stored procedures that access the table, especially that column in the table? I've tried running diffs against the files generated by SQLMetal with some limited success, but even with that it's fairly unclear. I know there is at least one commercial tool out there that claims to address this problem, but I am looking for something free. How are people dealing with this issue?

  Greetings, Would like to know if we need to explicitly free the string allocated by a xmldomnodeptr using it's get_text() i.e. IXMLDOMNodePtr pNode; /*some code*/ BSTR sValue; pNode->get_text(&sValue); /*Should I do this?*/ SysFreeString(sValue); I cannot see any documentation stating the same, so I'm assuming we need to do explicit deallocation sysfreestring. However, not specifying an intent is valid Fortran: subroutine bar (a, b) real, intent(in) :: a real :: b b = b + a ... Are there any real differences beyond compile time checking for an argument specified as intent(inout) and an argument without a specified intent? Is there anything I should worry about if I'm retrofitting intents to older, intent free, code?

• How to detect code duplication during development ?

  We have a fairly large code base, 400K LOC of C++, and code duplication is something of a problem. Are there any tools which can effectively detect duplicated blocks of code? Ideally this would be something that developers could use during development rather than just run occasionally to see where the problems are. It would also be nice if we could integrate such a tool with CruiseControl to give a report after each check in. I had a look at Duploc some time ago, it showed a nice graph but requires a smalltalk environment to use it, which makes running it automatically rather difficult. Free tools would be nice, but if there are some good commercial tools I would also be interested.

• How can I play compressed sound files in C# in a portable way?

  Is there a portable, not patent-restricted way to play compressed sound files in C# / .Net? I want to play short "jingle" sounds on various events occuring in the program. System.Media.SoundPlayer can handle only WAV, but those are typically to big to embed in a downloadable apllication. MP3 is protected with patents, so even if there was a fully managed decoder/player it wouldn't be free to redistribute. The best format available would seem to be OGG Vorbis, but I had no luck getting any C# Vorbis libraries to work (I managed to extract a raw PCM with csvorbis but I don't know how to play it afterwards). I neither want to distribute any binaries with my application nor depend on P/Invoke, as the project should run at least on Windows and Linux. I'm fine with bundling .Net assemblies as long as they are license-compatible with GPL. [this question is a follow up to a mailing list discussion on mono-dev mailing list a year ago]

  The answer to this SO question says that you can create an api by exposing methods, objects and .ect by setting their scope to public. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/630971/how-to-start-creating-an-application-api-in-net One of the main things I want to expose is the text of a textbox. Would the best way to do this be to create a public static Text property that is updated by the textbox's textchanged event? Also what would a developer do in order to interact with this text property? Would they add a reference to the program .exe in their program? Please help, I'm quite clueless here. Also was not sure how to word this question, feel free it edit if it is unclear.

  Hi, I got this plugin and have created my list etc and it's appearing fine. However, I am wondering how I create a list under another list...like the second level part of the list? I'm trying to create a dropdown menu you see. In the admin, when I try and drag the item over, it will only let me put it in the first level, how do I get it to go under a sub-item? I would consult the NAVT blog etc but the documentation is so poor it's a kind of joke. But I guess it IS free :) Many thanks, Michael

  http://jsbin.com/emoba5/3/edit click here to view demo This accordion menu/image slider works well except - When the page loads and when all accordion menu items are closed I need it to show a single image on right. At the moment the page loads a blank picture area and when an accordion menu item is closed it just restarts that menu items picture slider. (So on page load and when all accordions are closed I need it default to an image on the right.) Some of the items only have 1 picture i.e. posture 3 you will notice when you click on it, it shows the image and then goes blank, can it just fade the image in and leave it there if there is only 1 image?   Having a look around at WebsiteSpark from Microsoft - the deal is good (especially if you were looking to go down this path already). But I'm one of those people that likes to 'wait for the next version' if I'm in no rush to sign up. One question that's been bugging me is whether or not the program includes upgrades to Visual Studio and/or they will change the starting pack at some point? Currently, If you sign up now, you get 3 copies of Visual Studio 2008. If you're umming and ahhing about the scheme, is it worth waiting and hoping that they adapt their program so that it comes with VS2010? Or maybe that they'll offer free updates to those already in the scheme? (This question may be a little subjective I guess and it probably applies to the BizSpark side of things as well. Have there been any hints set in other Microsoft programs that might indicate the outcome? ).

It needs to be strong enough to beat a casual player, but efficient enough that it can calculate a move within a single request (less than 10 secs). • What is a good Visio Enterprise Architect replacement?

  I've been using Visio 2002/2003 Enterprise Architect to do my database schema design visually and then forward-generate the DDL to create the database. I wanted to switch to Visio 2007, but while it does have database diagramming support, it doesn't have the ability to generate DDL. Bummer. I am really disappointed because it seems like Microsoft has completely abandoned this feature. You can't do it in Visual Studio (that I've found). You can sorta do it with SQL Server Management Studio if you insert database diagrams into your database, but any edits to the schema immediately take effect. Has anyone found a good program to do this? I'm hoping to find one that is free and can generate DDL/SQL for SQL Server.

  Hello. As a not so experienced man in programming, I start to use netbeans PLATFORM. And I am really impressed by its power (for rich desktop app). I have been learning the programming in another way on university. I have never thought that something as powerful as nb Platform exists. My idea was that 30 people work on some rich desktop app for more than year to make it "beta". Now I know, that it is much more easier. But, I have never be satisfied with my own opinions about "something is best". I am still looking for better mouse trap. So the question is: What is most powerful IDE you know?   I am using VS 2008 Team Suite and SQL Server 2008 in my development environment. I am deploying to a shared-host website with shared-host SQL Server 2005. I want to push changes from my development environment to my production host. I tried using Data | Schema Compare... and it reports to me that it does not support SQL Server 2008. What do people use for this (Besides Red-Gate tools - I use those at my day job, and they rock...this is a volunteer thing for my son's school)? I am looking for something very inexpensive if not free.

• What are some best practices for structuring cherrypy apps?

  I'm writing a cherrypy app and I was wondering what the best way is for structuring my handlers and code for larger applications? I realize assignment is simple trough cherrypy.root, but what are some practices for writing the handlers and assigning them? (Allow me to prove my confusion!) My initial thought is to write a standard handler class that infers a template to run based on the current URL or class/method combination. Then I would assign one instance of that handler multiple times to the path to create pages. I don't see this working however as the recursive references wouldn't work quite right. So, given the fact that I'm already drawing blanks on how my own source code should look, I'd love some pointers and examples! Feel free to ask some detailed questions for me to clarify. While there is plenty of cherrypy tutorial material out there, it tends to only scratch the surface.

  I would like to create a subscription based website with users getting charged every month. I know I have to create an account with paypal or authorize.net. Do these payment providers automatically bill the user every month? How would I take care of offering the service free for 30 days and start billing after that? Also, I've heard of middle men services like spreedly, chargify. Where do they fit into the equation? Can someone help me wrap my head around these concepts? Considering, I am based in the U.S but would like to have the payment provider accept any kind of currency. Which payment provider do you suggest?

  We're looking for a cheap-to-free "off the shelf" ASP.NET catalogue application, that will meet the following requirements: Support two kinds of listings: Suppliers of Services Suppliers of Products, and their Products Suppliers can be categorised by: Area of specialisation - including sub-categories Location Other data, e.g. where listing came from Versioning of supplier/product details Easy to use management interface Use masterpages so we can drop it into our existing site layout Run on a Windows 2003 server, with .NET 3.5 installed In an ideal world, the following additional requirements might be met: Suppliers can manage their own listings Other products that are available to us (that will obviously need some additional development to meet these requirements) are: Content Management System (MS) Commerce Server - bear in mind we're not selling the products/suppliers, just listing them Simple DB application.
