• Windows Server 2003 Standby/Sleep Results in Cold Boot when Resuming

  I'm running Windows Server 2003 sp2 on a Dell Inspiron e1705. There has never been a problem going to standby/sleep mode (by closing the laptop lid, or from the Start menu), and then resuming later. Today I did a Windows Update to install the latest patches and fixes. I don't know if there is a correlation, but now when I resume from standby/sleep mode, the machine does a cold boot. The AC adapter is connected. The battery is 2 months old, and all its LEDs light up when pressing its test button. The Power Management shows it at "99% (charging)" all the time. There is nothing suspicious in any of the event logs. Any ideas?

• Can't connect to sql server 2008 named instance

  I have sql server 2005 and 2008 running on a server on my local (and very straightforward) network. Using sql management studio 2008 and visual studio 2008, I can connect over the network to the 2005 instance which is the default instance. I can't connect to the 08 instance (named MC08). I can connect to both when logged in to the server. Remote connections have been enabled for MC08 and dynamic ports is turned off (assigned to port 1045). The sql browser service is running as well. This used to work so I'm not sure what has changed. I can't connect using the IP address either. Nothing unusual in the event log either. Any ideas?

• SQL Server 2005 Agent running SSIS job can't find file path

  Basically I'm trying to run a functioning SSIS job (created in BIDS) under the SQL Server Agent - it reads a set of Excel spreadsheets and dumps the results into a table. The problem I'm having is getting the SSA to read the file path, the relevant part of the error is: "0x80004005 Description: "'N:\Assets Property & Facilities Management\Monthly Absence.xls' is not a valid path. Make sure that the path name is spelled correctly and that you are connected to the server on which the file resides." I've tried using UNC paths (\servername\ share) but the BIDS rewrites the paths to standard file paths (c:\directory\filename), I've also tried a proxy which runs this step under an Admin account. I've also tried changing the path to UNC on the SSIS job on the server. Also I'm forcing it to use the 32 bit DTEXEC, so it's not that either Always get the same error, do I need to re-create the job from scratch?

• Password problem while creating domain

  Hi, I'm freshman so far in server management stuff but this seems to be clearly against logic. After updating my Windows Server 2008 Standard 32bit, installing DNS server and AD DS I wanted to create domain via using CMD and dcpromo.exe setup. But no matter if I disable demand for comlex password in Password policies or create a password which fully comply with requirements for strong and complex password, still I can't get any further and it says that my password doesn't meet requirements. I'm also asked there to activate password demand by NET USER -passwordreq:yes and when I do so, this password doesn't work any more and I have to remove it from other admin account to be at least able to login with proper Administrator account.

• How can I configure a Linksys EA4500 + usb printer for network printing (without connect cloud)

  The documentation and classic firmware (2.0.37) for Cisco's Linksys EA4500 is a bit sparse on setup details. It says I can connect a USB-printer, but then goes on to try to sell "Connect Cloud" remote management software. I don't want that. I just want to know how to set this up with the existing advanced firmware. Is it possible? AFAIK, to setup a IPP or LDP printer, there is usually some kind of queue configuration on the server (i.e. the ea4500 in this case), but I can't find it in the firmware. I also have been unable to find any existing protocols from win7 or mac osx. (windows network share, IPP/LDP etc.) I'm curious if I need to have the "Storage" accounts active and connect to my router either via the local IP or router name. There's a lot of unknowns here; it would help to know how this particular router actually works.

• Can i enlarge os c drive of my windows 8? [migrated]

  Last year I got a new Western Digital WD Blue 500GB HDD to replace my old drive. The first thing I did was to install latest Windows 8. While installing Windows 8 I created 3 partitions, C drive for the OS and others for storage. The OS partition is 120GB (which at the time I thought would be plenty big) but I'm now realizing its too small! I wonder if it's possible to re-size HDD partition without reformatting and re-install my Windows 8. So that is my question, Can i enlarge os c drive of my windows 8 without having to re-format? I've used the Norton Partition Magic and Disk Management to make this happen but there doesn't seem to be any options to make it happen. Thanks for any help you guys can give regarding my question. I've worked hard to optimize my current install of Windows 8 and would hate to start all over again.

  Can Isc-dhcp-server give two static ip addresses to one mac address? I have several home terminals in my network. Each terminal have two interfaces. One for public traffic and one for a management traffic. Both interfaces have same mac address. DHCP server can detect interfaces via dhcp option field and dhcp class declarations. Every terminal have to have static ip address instead of dynamic address. With dynamic address and dynamic pools this would be an easy task. Or is there any dhcp server that can do this?

• Cannot open any applications on windows server 2008 R2 Standard edition

  I have a server running on Windows server 2008 R2. It is recently added as a member of a domain. I am not able to start any applications in thew server. When I tried to open Event viewer it errored out saying "The page file is to small to complete the action". I am experiencing same problem when I tried to open Sql server Management studio, task scheduler or any other application. The windows server serves as a production database server, but our applications are not experiencing any problems. Can someone please help?

• Hyper-V Cluster with failover - NETWORKING

  Hi We are looking to setup a 3 node Hyper-V cluster with live migration and failover using: 3 x Dell R710's with dual quad core Xeon & 128 GB RAM & 6 NICs in each 1 x Dell MD 3220i SAN We will be running this setup from a data center and so co-locating our kit. Can anybody explain how we should setup the network connections to make the system redundant? We have looked into this great article but are not sure how to get a 3 server setup correctly and reliably: http://faultbucket.ca/2011/01/hyper-v-failover-cluster-setup/. I believe we need network connections for: live migration, heartbeat, management, hyper-v etc. I assume as we are running it from a DC all IPs will have to be public IPs? Are AD servers will be VMs. One on each Hyper-V server and setup not to be HA.

• Multiple External IP Ranges on a Juniper SSG5

  I have a Juniper SSG 5 firewall in a datacenter. The first interface (eth0/0) has been assigned a static IP address and has three other addresses configured for VIP Nat. I have a static route configured at the lowest priority for 0.0.0.0/0 to my hosting company's gateway. Now I need to configure a second IP block. I have the IPs assigned to the second interface (eth0/1) which is in the same security zone and virtual router as the first. However, with this interface enabled I (a) can't initiate outbound sessions (browse the internet, ping, DNS lookup, etc) even though I can access servers behind the firewall just fine from the outside and (b) can't ping the management IP of the firewall/gateway. I've tried anything I can think of but I guess this is a little above my head. Could anyone point me in the right direction?   I need to create a Print Server Port via commandline in Windows 8 Per Google search I should be using prnport.vbs script to do so: cscript c:\Windows\System32\Printing_Admin_Scripts\en-US\prnport.vbs -a -s \\192.168.113.253 -r Xerox_192.168.113.253 However I get this error: ** Unable to connect to WMI service Error 0x800706BA The RPC Server is unavailable. ** I looked at local services and both RPC and WMI services are started . Also I made sure add remote admin rule to Windows Firewall via command line without success!: netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group="windows management instrumentation (wmi)" new enable=yes netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group="remote administration" new enable=yes NOTE: If I use the GUI to create the print server port then add the printer via command line: rundll32 printui.dll,PrintUIEntry /if /b "Xerox WorkCenter 7535" /F C:\Windows\Inf\WC7545-7556_PCL6_x64_Driver\x2DNORX.inf /r "Xerox_192.168.113.253" /m "Xerox WorkCentre 7535 PCL6" THE PRINTER IS SUCCESSFULLY ADDED.   I have a problem where I can't add a printer on my Windows 7 machine, because it fails with "The printer driver is unknown" (error code 1797) using WMI/VBScript. The thing is that the printer driver already exists on the PC. I've used AddPrinterConnection to connect to the remote printer queue, and the drivers get installed. I've confirmed they exist by a) Enumerating Win32_PrinterDriver with WBEMTEST utility which shows the driver, and also in the Printer Management MMC snap-in. Is there some other scriptable way I can get this to work? I'm adding a local TCP/IP port, pointing my new printer object instance to use that port and the driver from using AddPrinterConnection, and giving it a name, but it refuses to work...

• How to troubleshoot down terminal service/CITRIX sessions, when the process just won't terminate?

  Running a CITRIX presentation server farm, version 4.5.6 on Windows 2003 sp2. In the CITRIX Access Management Console, I sometimes get a session that shows it's in a down state - but has none of the normal info associated with it (user name, applications, client name, idle time, etc...). It does say which servers it's on, so I check out that server's terminal services manager. I can see the down session but cannot reset it. I get: (Error 7024 - the requested operation cannot be completed because the terminal connection is currently busy processing a connect, disconnect, reset, or delete operation.) So I go to the task manager and look up the processes running under that session id. I see it's one of my published apps, but when I try to end the process - it simply does nothing and the process remains. Any way to get rid of these sessions without a server reboot?

  I have a hdd with the folowing partition table 12Gb Primary Partition (ntfs) 140Gb Extended Partition (ntfs) I want to install windows 7 and I need more space for the Primary Partition. The problem is that when I resize partitons I obtain: 12Gb Primary Partition (ntfs) 110Gb Extended Partition (ntfs) 30Gb Free Space So I can't allocate the free space to primary partition because the free space is at the end of the disk. Is there a solution to extend the primary partition as: 42Gb Primary Partition (ntfs) 110Gb Extended Partition (ntfs) without repartitioning the entire disk? I used partition magic, gparted-live-0.4.6-4 and others with no success. With the Disk Management from Vista I manage to extend primary partition, but made my partitions dinamic.

• How does java permgen relate to code size

  I've been reading a lot about java memory management, garbage collecting et al and I'm trying to find the best settings for my limited memory (1.7g on a small ec2 instance) I'm wondering if there is a direct correlation between my code size and the permgen setting. According to sun: The permanent generation is special because it holds data needed by the virtual machine to describe objects that do not have an equivalence at the Java language level. For example objects describing classes and methods are stored in the permanent generation. To me this means that it's literally storing my class def'ns etc... Does this mean there is a direct correlation between my compiled code size and the permgen I should be setting? My whole app is about 40mb and i noticed we're using 256mb permgen. I'm thinking maybe we're using memory that could be better allocated to dynamic code like object instances etc...

• WD My Passport detected but not assigned a drive letter

  I have a WD My Passport external drive which used to work fine on my Win7 x64 box until recently. Since the past few days, windows would not detect my external drive. However, Storage under disk management lists my external drive(which means windows can see my drive) but without a drive letter. I am not able to assign a drive letter(the option is grayed out). I installed EASUS Partition Manager which allows me to assign a drive letter, but fails to do so when I apply to save changes. What do i do to assign a drive letter to the drive or make windows to detect it as of old? The external drive works well on Win7 x32(dual boot, same system) and win7 x64 on another box. Update: cant comment from Opera Mini 6 @zeke the drive works absolutely fine on other Win7 boxes and on the dual boot win7 on the same system.

• Try exchange in real domain

  We (as a company) 'd like to try exchange server to replace our mail server. I downloaded the demo version from Microsoft website, but during the installation it wants administrator access to domain to edit the Active Directory database structure. The test will last for (at least) a month to see if it will bring real advantages to our management systems. Here is my question: Is it "dangerous"? If I uninstall the exchange server everything will be reverted to previous state? I'm kind of "scared" about the changes he may apply to our domain controllers.

• Best practice for assigning private IP ranges?

  Is it common practice to use certain private IP address ranges for certain purposes? I'm starting to look into setting up virtualization systems and storage servers. Each system has two NICs, one for public network access, and one for internal management and storage access. Is it common for businesses to use certain ranges for certain purposes? If so, what are these ranges and purposes? Or does everyone do it differently? I just don't want to do it completely differently from what is standard practice in order to simplify things for new hires, etc.

• Migrating Windows 2008 R2 to Windows 2012 (migrate all FSMO too)

  I own 2 server with Windows 2008 R2, both DC. The first one is of course the Primary DC (with all FSMO). What I would like to do is ro dcdemote the 2nd DC, remove it from domain and replace the Windows 2008 r2 with 2012. I will then rejoin this 2nd DC (with the new 2012 server) to domain and dcpromo it (Server Management). After this is a new DC I would like to temporary transfer all the FSMO to this server, while I'm doing the same operation on what is actually the Primary DC. Is this a stupid solution? What I would like to do is a clean installation, I don't want to upgrade directly those systems. Suggestions? Ideas? Thanks, Mauro

• Server Performance

  We have a dedicated server that we use to stage websites (our test server). The performance of the server has become really bad and we regularly have to restart it. When performance is poor I have checked task manager for the processes and memory but everything looks OK. We use a content management system and it is always when using the admin section of this CMS that we notice the performance degrade which makes me think it may have something to do with DB calls the CMS is making. Does this sound viable? Any other sggestions of how I can go about testing this? Thanks in advance...

• Ask a DNS server what sites it hosts - and how to possibly prevent misuse

  I've got a server which I host my company website as well as some of my clients. I noticed a domain which I created, but never used, was being attacked by a poke and hope hacker. I imagine that the hacker collected the domain from either hitting my DNS server and requesting what domains are hosted. So, in the interest of prevention and better server management, how would I ask my own DNS server (Linux CentOS 4) what sites are being hosted on it? Also, is there a way to prevent these types of attacks by hiding this information? I would assume that DNS servers would need to keep some information public, but I'm not sure if there is something that most hosts do to help prevent these bandwidth wasting poke and hope attacks.   I am working on implementing a custom server application that should be capable of handling a very large volume of traffic. I am aware that this type of question has been asked a lot, but I haven't been able to find a good answer. What I'm really looking for is for a server with given specs which OS will be able to handle a larger traffic faster and more reliably. I do not care about rights management or any other features. I am fairly good with both platforms, and so I would like to pick the OS with better performance on a clean install, and with nothing else running. Thanks in advance.

• MSSQL Replace Database in Live Web App

  I have a web app that is currently live. I had the need to make major modifications to the database and now I need to replace the current one. My dev SQL instance is not the live one. I usually just make a backup of the new DB, blow the old one away and Restore my updated one. But now I have data I need to preserve. Most of the current tables have changed, in that extra columns have been added, all existing columns are still there and unchanged. I have access to Management Studio. What is the right way to do this?

• Run as different user on a shortcut

  How do I do this in Windows 7? On Windows XP I had the ability to mark a shortcut as being run by a different user, so that every time I ran it it would prompt me for a username/password. This let me have two shortcuts for things like SQL Server Management Studio, one for my normal account and one for my Domain Admins account which has access to production servers. I can get to the 'Run as different user' option with Shift+right-click, but I can't see an option anywhere that would let me mark the shortcut as doing this every time.
