• Windows 7: How to enable firewall disabled by global policy on a computer joined to a domain?

  On a Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit laptop joined to a corporate domain, the Windows Firewall is disabled by a global policy. Is there any way to enable the Windows Firewall in this scenario? The gpedit.msc setting Windows Firewall: Protect all network connections is inaccessible. EDIT: It appears that changing HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\gpsvc\Start value to 4 will disable the GPO and allow you to start the firewall and stop the bots from pushing cr*p to your computer... will check on Monday and if it works I'll confirm here in case someone else in my situation wonders upon this question... EDIT: It's probably better if I write a mock windows service not doing anything and name it according to what is expected to be on my box and than crete mock McCrappy executable and mock McCrappy folder structure and remove all the actual stuff... That would take a little time but would most certainly make my box completely stealthy...

  The python interface to the memcache has an add method: add(key, value, time=0, min_compress_len=0, namespace=None) Sets a key's value, if and only if the item is not already in memcache. ... The return value is True if added, False on error. So with this you can add an item if it doesn't exist, and see if it previously existed by the return value. The java memcache api equivalent for this doesn't let you know if there was a previous value or not: put(key, value, expiration, MemcacheService.SetPolicy.ADD_ONLY_IF_NOT_PRESENT); MemcacheService.SetPolicy.ADD_ONLY_IF_NOT_PRESENT: add the value if no value with the key, do nothing if the key exists Is there a way to know if a previous value existed or not with the java api? I can't just check with the contains method beforehand, because in between the call to contains and the call to put, another JVM instance could modify the memcache.

  Hy! I have my project with pydev and looks like this: ProjectName -src -gaesessions -geo -static_files -app is this ok? I really don't like to have the gaesessions and geo in my root, but their namespace are by root. I would like to have a structure like this: ProjectName -src -python -thirdParty -gaesessions -geo -app -static_files is this possible? or even better would be to make them as a library. this would be the best thing, but how to do this in eclipse and then when deploy my app, to deploy with those files too? thanks

  I'm working on a python program for homework and the problem asks me to develop a program that encrypts a message using a caesar cipher. I need to be able to have the user input a number to shift the encryption by, such as 4: e.g. 'A' to 'E'. The user also needs to input the string to be translated. The book says to use a zip() to do the problem. I am confused on how I would do this though. • Are there any javascript string formatting operations similar to the way %s is used in Python?

  I've been writing a lot of javascript, and when I want to stick a variable in a string, I've been doing it like so: $("#more_info span#author").html("Created by: <a href='/user/" + author + "'>" + author + "</a>"); I feel like it's pretty ugly and a pain to write over and over. In python the %s operator makes this problem easy. Even in C, I can do sprintf (IIRC). Is there anything like that in javascript? (Lots of google'ing yielded nothing.)

• Best way to organize filetype settings in .vim and .vimrc?

  I'm going through my vim dotfiles to tidy them up. I've noticed that through time I've added various filetype specific settings in various inconsistent ways. Let's suppose I'm customizing for Python: au BufRead,BufNewfFile *.py (do something). I don't like this because some Python files might not have the .py termination. au FileType python (do something). This seems a better option because it doesn't depend on the file having the .py termination. The drawback is that Vim doesn't know about some filetypes. I can make Vim recognize additional filetypes, but I also have various inconsistent ways of doing it: a .vim/filetype.vim file, another in .vim/after/filetype.vim and various set filetype commands in .vimrc. Add a .vim/ftplugin/python.vim file with filetype specific settings. I understand the $VIMRUNTIME/ftplugin/python.vim can override whatever settings I make here. One problem is that I'm not sure how this interacts with .vim/filetype.vim and .vim/after/filetype.vim. Add a .vim/after/ftplugin/python.vim. I understand that this is loaded after $VIMRUNTIME/ftplugin/python.vim so it can overwrite settings from there. As in the previous method I'm not sure how it interacts with the filetype.vim files. So I have at least four ways of doing this, not mentioning syntax files and filetype-specific plugins. It seems to me the best way to do this is to put my filetype specific settings in after/ftplugin so they don't get overwritten, and filetypes.vim in after for the same reason. However, before I proceed I'd like to ask if anyone has suggestions about the best way to deal with filetype specific settings.

• Why doesn't every class in the .Net framework have a corresponding interface?

  Since I started to develop in a test/behavior driven style, I appreciated the ability to mock out every dependency. Since mocking frameworks like Moq work best when told to mock an interface, I now implement an interface for almost every class I create b/c most likely I will have to mock it out in a test eventually. Well, and programming to an interface is good practice, anyways. At times, my classes take dependencies on .Net classes (e.g. FileSystemWatcher, DispatcherTimer). It would be great in that case to have an interface, so I could depend on an IDispatcherTimer instead, to be able to pass it a mock and simulate its behavior to see if my system under test reacts correctly. Unfortunately both of above mentioned classes do not implement such interfaces, so I have to resort to creating adapters, that do nothing else but inherit from the original class and conform to an interface, that I then can use. • Moq, a translator and an expression

  I'm working with an expression within a moq-ed "Get Service" and ran into a rather annoying issue. In order to get this test to run correctly and the get service to return what it should, there's a translator in between that takes what you've asked for, sends it off and gets what you -really- want. • Unit testing with Mocks. Test behaviour not implementation

I always had a problem when unit testing classes that calls other classes, for example I have a class that creates a new user from a phone-number then saves it to the database and sends a SMS to the number provided. • Mocking non-virtual methods in C++ without editing production code?

  Hello, I am a fairly new software developer currently working adding unit tests to an existing C++ project that started years ago. Due to a non-technical reason, I'm not allowed to modify any existing code. The base class of all my modules has a bunch of methods for Setting/Getting data and communicating with other modules. Since I just want to unit testing each individual module, I want to be able to use canned values for all my inter-module communication methods. I.e. for a method Ping() which checks if another module is active, I want to have it return true or false based on what kind of test I'm doing. I've been looking into Google Test and Google Mock, and it does support mocking non-virtual methods. However the approach described (http://code.google.com/p/googlemock/wiki/CookBook#Mocking_Nonvirtual_Methods) requires me to "templatize" the original methods to take in either real or mock objects. I can't go and templatize my methods in the base class due to the requirement mentioned earlier, so I need some other way of mocking these virtual methods Basically, the methods I want to mock are in some base class, the modules I want to unit test and create mocks of are derived classes of that base class. There are intermediate modules in between my base Module class and the modules that I want to test. I would appreciate any advise! Thanks, JW EDIT: A more concrete examples My base class is lets say rootModule, the module I want to test is leafModule. There is an intermediate module which inherits from rootModule, leafModule inherits from this intermediate module. In my leafModule, I want to test the doStuff() method, which calls the non virtual GetStatus(moduleName) defined in the rootModule class. I need to somehow make GetStatus() to return a chosen canned value. Mocking is new to me, so is using mock objects even the right approach?

  I've been trying to get to mock a method with vararg parameters using Mockito: interface A { B b(int x, int y, C... c); } A a = mock(A.class); B b = mock(B.class); when(a.b(anyInt(), anyInt(), any(C[].class))).thenReturn(b); assertEquals(b, a.b(1, 2)); This doesn't work, however if I do this instead: when(a.b(anyInt(), anyInt())).thenReturn(b); assertEquals(b, a.b(1, 2)); This works, despite that I have completely omitted the varargs argument when stubbing the method. Any clues?

  I have a related question, but this is another part of MY puzzle. I would like to get the OLD VALUE of a Column from a Row that was UPDATEd... WITHOUT using Triggers (nor Stored Procedures, nor any other extra, non-SQL/-query entities). The query I have is like this: UPDATE my_table SET processing_by = our_id_info -- unique to this instance WHERE trans_nbr IN ( SELECT trans_nbr FROM my_table GROUP BY trans_nbr HAVING COUNT(trans_nbr) > 1 LIMIT our_limit_to_have_single_process_grab ) RETURNING row_id If I could do "FOR UPDATE ON my_table" at the end of the subquery, that'd be devine (and fix my other question/problem). But, that won't work: can't have this AND a "GROUP BY" (which is necessary for figuring out the COUNT of trans_nbr's). Then I could just take those trans_nbr's and do a query first to get the (soon-to-be-) former processing_by values. I've tried doing like: UPDATE my_table SET processing_by = our_id_info -- unique to this instance FROM my_table old_my_table JOIN ( SELECT trans_nbr FROM my_table GROUP BY trans_nbr HAVING COUNT(trans_nbr) > 1 LIMIT our_limit_to_have_single_process_grab ) sub_my_table ON old_my_table.trans_nbr = sub_my_table.trans_nbr WHERE my_table.trans_nbr = sub_my_table.trans_nbr AND my_table.processing_by = old_my_table.processing_by RETURNING my_table.row_id, my_table.processing_by, old_my_table.processing_by But that can't work; "old_my_table" is not viewable outside of the join; the RETURNING clause is blind to it. I've long since lost count of all the attempts I've made; I have been researching this for literally hours. If I could just find a bullet-proof way to lock the rows in my subquery - and ONLY those rows, and WHEN the subquery happens - all the concurrency issues I'm trying to avoid disappear... UPDATE: [WIPES EGG OFF FACE] Okay, so I had a typo in the non-generic code of the above that I wrote "doesn't work"; it does... thanks to Erwin Brandstetter, below, who stated it would, I re-did it (after a night's sleep, refreshed eyes, and a banana for bfast). Since it took me so long/hard to find this sort of solution, perhaps my embarrassment is worth it? At least this is on SO for posterity now... : What I now have (that works) is like this: UPDATE my_table SET processing_by = our_id_info -- unique to this instance FROM my_table AS old_my_table WHERE trans_nbr IN ( SELECT trans_nbr FROM my_table GROUP BY trans_nbr HAVING COUNT(*) > 1 LIMIT our_limit_to_have_single_process_grab ) AND my_table.row_id = old_my_table.row_id RETURNING my_table.row_id, my_table.processing_by, old_my_table.processing_by AS old_processing_by The COUNT(*) is per a suggestion from Flimzy in a comment on my other (linked above) question.   I'm running the Django 1.2 development server and I get these Broken Pipe error messages whenever I load a page from it with Chrome or Safari. My co-worker is getting the error as well when he loads a page from his dev server. We don't have these errors when using Opera or Firefox.
