  • GRUB reporting wrong partition type

    It all started when I had to replace one of the disks that the software RAID 1 on this machine currently uses. From that moment on I have not been able to boot to the Windows XP that is installed on the fourth hard drive, /dev/sdd. I am almost positive that the problem is related not to Windows but to GRUB, as if I unplug all the other hard drives so that the Windows XP disk is now /dev/sda it boots with no problem. The problem seems to be that GRUB detects a wrong partition type, which I understand suggest that something is really messed up. This is what I get when I try to follow the steps that until now had worked like a charm: grub> map (hd0) (hd3) grub> map (hd3) (hd0) grub> root (hd3,0) Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0xfd 0xfd? That doesn't make sense. /dev/sdb and sdc are 0xfd (Linux raid), but not /dev/sdd: edel:~# fdisk -l [...] Disk /dev/sdd: 250.0 GB, 250059350016 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 30401 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Disk identifier: 0x00048d89 Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sdd1 * 1 30400 244187968+ 7 HPFS/NTFS edel:/boot/grub# cat device.map (hd0) /dev/sda (hd1) /dev/sdb (hd2) /dev/sdc (hd3) /dev/sdd I have been trying to work this out for hours, to no avail.   • TechEd 2012: Fast SQL Server

    While I spend a certain amount of my time creating databases (coding around SQL Server and setup a server when I have to) it isn’t my bread and butter.  Since I have run into a number of time that SQL Server needed to be tuned I figured I would step out of my comfort zone and see what I can learn. Brent Ozar packed a mountain of information into his session on making SQL Server faster.  I’m not sure how he found time to hit all of his points since he was allowing the audience abuse him on Twitter instead of asking questions, but he managed it.  I also questioned his sanity since he appeared to be using a fruit laptop. He had my attention though when he stated that he had given up on telling people to not use “select *”. He posited that it could be fixed with hardware by caching the data in memory.  He continued by cautioning that having too many indexes could defeat this approach.  His logic was sound if not always practical, but it was a good place to start when determining the trade-offs you need to balance.  He was moving pretty fast, but I believe he was prescribing this solution predominately for OLTP database prior to moving on to data warehouse solutions. Much of the advice he gave for data warehouses is contained in the Microsoft Fast Track guidance so I won’t rehash it here.  To summarize the solution seems to be the proper balance memory, disk access speed and the speed of the pipes that get the data from storage to the CPU.  It appears to be sound guidance and the session gave enough information that going forward we should be able to find the details needed easily.  Just what the doctor ordered. del.icio.us Tags: SQL Server,TechEd,TechEd 2012,Database,Performance Tuning

  • reliably restarting services using upstart or runit

    I want to reliably restart my app and web server processes on crash. If I understand correctly, runit starts every service as a child process. If the child process crashes this sends a signal to the parent process which in turn respawns the service as a child. How does this work in the case of upstart. Does it also spawn a child process like runit? I am considering using runit for this. Is that needed, or is upstart good enough for this ? I am using nginx for my web server and gunicorn (python) for my app server.

  • How do you create a SQL query in Excel 2007 with a dynamic date range?

    I am trying to create a reporting spreadsheet that can print reports for a given time period. The query below works, but when I try to use a "?" parameter in place of the date, I get an error after selecting a cell containing my date. If I use single quotes ('?') I get a conversion from string to date/time failure, if I don't (?) I get a syntax error near @p1. Eventually I will need either a start and end date or a formula adding a month or shift to the starting date/time to filter the data down to important information. The query was built in Microsoft Query. SELECT FloatTable.DateAndTime, TagTable.TagName FROM master.dbo.FloatTable FloatTable, master.dbo.TagTable TagTable WHERE FloatTable.TagIndex = TagTable.TagIndex AND ((FloatTable.DateAndTime={ts '2012-06-01 00:00:00'})) Any assistance would be much appreciated.   • MAMP - Unable to turn off PHP E_STRICT error reporting

    For some reason, MAMP won't allow me to turn off E_STRICT warnings. I've tried everything from changing the value explicitly in php.ini to error_reporting(E_ALL & ~E_STRICT) in my file... to explicitly saying php_ini('error_reporting', E_ALL & ~E_STRICT). I'm entirely confused as to why this is happening, and from what I can tell its specific to MAMP. The version of MAMP I'm running is 5.2.13 - and before you start telling me I shouldn't be ignoring those warnings, lets just be clear that I am using a framework that requires that E_STRICT be ignored. (lame, I know.)
