  • Problem with Lenovo x200s Wifi under Ubutu Karmic

    Hi, I have just gotten my Lenovo X200s laptop, and I am install Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic on it. The installation went through without a hitch, but I can't get my wifi to work. lspci | grep Network Produces the following results: 00:19.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82567LM Gigabit Network Connection (rev 03) 03:00.0 Network controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Device 8172 (rev 10) The weird part is that when I turn the wifi hardware stitch on and off on the side of the laptop, I get the following printed in /var/log messages: Dec 30 23:24:48 temp-laptop kernel: [ 213.432302] usb 4-2: USB disconnect, address 2 Dec 30 23:24:52 temp-laptop kernel: [ 217.276310] usb 4-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 3 Dec 30 23:24:52 temp-laptop kernel: [ 217.441759] usb 4-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice Does Ubuntu think my wifi card is a USB device? Am I missing some driver? What can I do to fix this? Please, help!

  • Internet cafe software for linux

    I have gotten a request to roll out a total of 8 internet cafe's in a large network. Budget is non-existent as it will all be done for a non-profit. I was planing to use Ubuntu and live-cds to minimize the amount of management required, but I can't seem to find any suitable internet cafe system that is Ubuntu based. The requirements are pretty basic: It needs to keep track of logged in time and log out users when their time it up. No billing will be done, it will just be used to ensure people can share the computers fairly. It should be possible to force logout from a central system. Users will be unskilled, so it has to have a GUI. What (preferably free, considering the shoe-string budget) software would you suggest to manage this?

  • Migrating from Apache2 to Lighttpd creating errors in PHP/mySQL?

    Ok, I've been using basics ubuntu LAMP setups for years now, and I wanted to give lighttpd a try. My LAMP setup run in a virtual machine with scripts running just fine. So I created a new virtual machine, starting with a fresh install of ubuntu and made my setups. On this new VM, lighttpd + php works just fine. (Or at least it seems...) Problem occurs when I take the scripts from my LAMP setup and upload them to the new VM. I'm getting : Warning: mysql_real_escape_string(): Access denied for user 'www-data'@'localhost' (using password: NO) My lighttpd setup is configured as php-cgi but not my apache2 setup. Could this be the source of the problem? I think that scripts would be independent of the server configuration, so I doubt it. Also, I know that my DB connexion informations are good (as I can log in via phpmyadmin perfectly). I'm in the dark here, any pointers ? Thanks,

  • Migrating to new dovecot server; Dovecot fails to authenticate using old password database

    I am migrating my companies intranet from a OS X server to an Ubuntu 12.04 server. We use a flat file to store user names and passwords hashs. This file is used by Apache and Dovecot to authenticate users. The Ubuntu server is running Dovecot 2.0 while the OS X server is running Dovecot 1.2. I have already migrated WebDav which uses Apache for authentication. Authentication works. I'm in the process of migrating our Prosody server which uses Dovecot for authentiation. Dovecot is up and running, but when I test authentication using either telnet a login username password or doveadm sudo doveadm auth username, I get dovecot: auth: passwd-file(username): unknown user dovecot: auth: Debug: client out: FAIL#0111#011user=username in my log file. I can use sudo dovecot user username to perform a user lookup and it will return the user's info. I can generate a password hash locally and Dovecot will authenticate the test password just fine.

  • All traffic is passed through OpenVPN although not requested

    I have a bash script on a Ubuntu box which searches for the fastest openvpn server, connects, and binds one program to the tun0 interface. Unfortunately, all traffic is being passed through the VPN. Does anybody know what's going on? The relevant line follows: openvpn --daemon --config $cfile --auth-user-pass ipvanish.pass --status openvpn-status.log There don't seem to be any entries in iptables when I enter sudo iptables --list. The config files look like this: client dev tun proto tcp remote nyc-a04.ipvanish.com 443 resolv-retry infinite nobind persist-key persist-tun persist-remote-ip ca ca.ipvanish.com.crt tls-remote nyc-a04.ipvanish.com auth-user-pass comp-lzo verb 3 auth SHA256 cipher AES-256-CBC keysize 256 tls-cipher DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA:DHE-DSS-AES256-SHA:AES256-SHA There is nothing in there that would direct everything through tun0, so maybe it's a new vagary of Ubuntu? I don't remember this happening in the past.

    I have an AZURE virtual machine with a MySQL server installed on it running ubuntu 13.04. I am trying to remote connect to the MySQL server however get the simple error "Can't connect to MySQL server on {IP}" I have already done the follow: * commented out the bind-address within the /etc/mysql/my.cnf * commented out skip-external-locking within the same my.cnf * "ufw allow mysql" * "iptables -A INPUT -i eth0 -p tcp -m tcp --dport 3306 -j ACCEPT" * setup an AZURE endpoint for mysql * "sudo netstat -lpn | grep 3306" does indeed show mysql LISTENING * "GRANT ALL ON *.* TO remote@'%' IDENTIFIED BY 'password'; * "GRANT ALL ON *.* TO remote@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'password'; * "/etc/init.d/mysql restart" * I can connect via SSH tunneling, but not without it * I have spun up an identical ubuntu 13.04 server on rackspace and SUCCESSFULLY connected using the same procedures outlined here. NONE of the above works on my azure server however. I thought the creation of an endpoint would work, but no luck. Any help please? Is there something I'm missing entirely?

  • suddenly cannot mount nfs share from Windows 7

    I recently reinstalled my file server (moved from fedora to Ubuntu server). Now I cannot mount my nfs share from Windows 7, mounting from Mac OSX works fine. In Windows I either keep getting "the semaphore timeout period has expired" or "an unexpected error has occured". Does Ubuntu need some special magic to allow Windows 7 to mount an nfs share? This is my exports file /home/Bing/ 192.168.1.*(rw,async,insecure,no_subtree_check) /home/Bing/mnt/EXTRN2 192.168.1.*(rw,async,insecure,no_subtree_check) /home/Bing/mnt/EXTRN3 192.168.1.*(rw,async,insecure,no_subtree_check)

Can some one guide me what I am doing wrong and how it can be rectified.   • Configure TV Capture card to not use external audio jack for TV audio output

    I had this working with MythTV on Ubuntu 9.1. Then a power surge killed the motherboard. After replacing the motherboard, ram and cpu, the card does not produce any audio except through the output jack on the back of the card. I do not want to use a cable to go from the back of the card to the audio in on the built in sound card of the new mother board. FYI, the old motherboard did not have an on-board sound card. There was a separate audio card installed. There's some configuration that has to be done to have it work the same way again. I just have no idea where to start. This is regarding wintv hauppauge mythtv linux ubuntu 9.10 audio

  • Linux and GeForce 8400 dual monitor

    I'm trying to install a linux distribution on my PC. I have a GeForce 8400 GS with two connected monitors. I tried with Fedora 12 and Ubuntu 9.10 (both 64 and 32 bit) and the live cd cannot boot properly. I don't get a visible error on Ubuntu, it simply hangs up during the boot. With Fedora I get this error: [drm] Modeset on unsupported output type [drm] Table 0x0000 not found for 1/1 using first I tried to disconnect one of the two monitor and was able to install on my HD and boot from there, but if I try to connect the second monitor again I cannot boot. Do I need to install something else? (a driver for my video card for example).

    Using rsync(ubuntu) and a DeltaCopy server on W2K3 to back up some of the data on the file server before I migrate from W2K3 to Ubuntu server. After it completed I ran a dry run just in case something had been missed or changed ...     I am trying to virtualize an Ubuntu machine using VMWare vCenter Converter, but ran into permissions issues. I followed the instructions of part 1 and 2 on this page but when I got to "For Ubuntu operating systems further configuration is needed" I started running into trouble. I'm decent at Linux, but I'm not an experienced sysadmin. How do I Target the specific user you will be using and assign it user id 0/group 0? How do I Ensure that you also still enable Allow root to ssh even though you are not using the root account? Thanks for your help.

    In case you didn’t notice, VS2010 adds a new property to assembly references in the properties window: Embed Interop Types: This property was introduced as a way to overcome the pain of deploying Primary Interop Assemblies. Read that blog post, it will help understand why you DON’T need it when doing VS extensibility (VSX) work. It's generally advisable when doing VSX development NOT to use Embed Interop Types, which is a feature intended mostly for office PIA scenarios where the PIA assemblies are HUGE and had to be shipped with your app. This is NEVER the case with VSX authoring. All interop assemblies you reference (EnvDTE, VS.Shell, etc.) are ALWAYS already there in the users' machine, and you NEVER need to distribute them. From: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/sqlexpress/archive/2011/07/12/introducing-localdb-a-better-sql-express.aspx High-Level Overview After the lengthy introduction it's time to take a look at LocalDB from the technical side. At a very high level, LocalDB has the following key properties: LocalDB uses the same sqlservr.exe as the regular SQL Express and other editions of SQL Server. The application is using the same client-side providers (ADO.NET, ODBC, PDO and others) to connect to it and operates on data using the same T-SQL language as provided by SQL Express. LocalDB is installed once on a machine (per major SQL Server version). Multiple applications can start multiple LocalDB processes, but they are all started from the same sqlservr.exe executable file from the same disk location. LocalDB doesn't create any database services; LocalDB processes are started and stopped automatically when needed. The application is just connecting to "Data Source=(localdb)\v11.0" and LocalDB process is started as a child process of the application. A few minutes after the last connection to this process is closed the process shuts down. LocalDB connections support AttachDbFileName property, which allows developers to specify a database file location. LocalDB will attach the specified database file and the connection will be made to it.

  • Visual Studio 2010, Entity Framework, and Oracle

    While I was working on a SilverLight 4 demo I found out that Entity Framework is not supported directly through the .NET provider or ODP tools. In order to make them work you need to either write a wrapper of your own (wouldn't chance it) or else use a provider like DataDirect or Quest's upcoming tool. So far, I've been very happy with the DataDirect tool (found here http://www.datadirect.com/products/net/index.ssp). As I get a little farther along I'll post more on SL4, RIA, and EF.
