• RRAS VPN Server on Windows 2008 Behind NAT

  Ok, so I have kind of a funky setup, let me see if I can describe it. I have a single VMware host with a public IP address 74.xx.xx.x Inside that host, I have 3 VM's Web Server - 1 NIC - 192.168.199.20 SQL Server - 1 NIC - 192.168.199.30 RRAS/VPN Server - 2 NICs 192.168.199.40 & 192.168.199.45 Due to Limitations of my ISP, all of the VM's are connected to the host VIA NAT. I have NAT setup for the webserver so all incoming requests on 74.xx.xx.x via port 80 route to 192.168.199.20. This works fine. Now I want to set up a Windows 2008 VPN server inside this NAT network and forward the correct traffic to it. My questions are as follows? What are the TCP/UDP ports that i have to forward? What special configuration is needed on the server and clients since this is behind a NAT Any other advice would be wonderful.

• Apache VirtualHosts define php.ini but extend main php.ini

  I have a main php.ini file and am wondering if it is possible to specify a custom php.ini for a virtualhost, but this php.ini would extend the main php.ini file, so that only the specified settings are overridden and everything else is taken the main php.ini. For example: I have my main php.ini file in /etc/php5/php.ini, containing all the defaults. Let's say this has everything as default so e.g. allow_url_fopen = On allow_url_include = Off Then I have my virtualhost located at /home/user/php.ini and this contains the following: allow_url_fopen = Off This php would run with first the php.ini in /etc/php5/php.ini then the settings that are in /home/user/php.ini resulting in a configuration where both allow_url_fopen and allow_url_include are set to Off. Edit: Also, if /home/user/php.ini does not exist, it would default back to /etc/php5/php.ini

• Some New .NET Toys (Repost)

  Last week I was fortunate enough to spend time in Redmond on Microsoft’s campus for the 2011 Microsoft MVP Summit. It was great to hang out with a number of old friends and get the opportunity to talk tech with the various product teams up at Microsoft. The weather wasn’t exactly sunny but Microsoft always does a great job with the Summit and everyone had a blast (heck, I even got to run the bases at SafeCo field) While much of what we saw is covered under NDA, there a ton of great things in the pipeline from Microsoft and many things that are already available (or just became so) that I wasn’t necessarily aware of. The purpose of this post is to share some of the info I learned on resources and tools available to .NET developers today. Please let me know if you have any questions (or if you know of something else cool which might benefit others). Enjoy! Visual Studio 2010 SP1 Microsoft has issued the RTM release of Visual Studio 2010 SP1. You can download the full SP1 on MSDN as of today (March 10th to the general public) and take advantage of such things as: Silverlight 4 is included in the box (as opposed to a separate install) Silverlight 4 Profiling WCF RIA Services SP1 Intellitrace for 64-bit and SharePoint ASP.NET now easily supports IIS Express and SQL CE Want a description of all that’s new beyond the above biased list (which arguably only contains items I think are important)? Check out this KB article. Portable Library Tools CTP Without much fanfare Microsoft has released a CTP of a new add-in to Visual Studio 2010 which simplifies code sharing between projects targeting different runtimes (i.e. Silverlight, WPF, Win7 Phone, XBox). With this Add-In installed you can add a new project of type “Portable Library” and specify which platforms you wish to target. Once that is done, any code added to this library will be limited to use only features which are common to all selected frameworks. Other projects can now reference this portable library and be provided assemblies custom built to their environment. This greatly simplifies the current process of sharing linked files between platforms like WPF and Silverlight. You can find out more about this CTP and how it works on this great blog post. Visual Studio Async CTP Microsoft has also released a CTP of a set of language and framework enhancements to provide a much more powerful asynchronous programming model. Due to the focus on async programming in all types of platforms (and it being the ONLY option in Silverlight and Win7 phone) a move towards a simpler and more understandable model is always a good thing. This CTP (called Visual Studio Async CTP) can be downloaded here. You can read more about this CTP on this blog post. MSDN Code Samples Gallery Microsoft has also launched new code samples gallery on their MSDN site: http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/. This site allows you to easily search for small samples of code related to a particular technology or platform. If a sample of code you are looking for is not found, you can request one via the site and other developers can see your request and provide a sample to the site to suit your needs. You can also peruse requested samples and, if you find a scenario where you can provide value, upload your own sample for the benefit of others. Samples are packaged into the VS .vsix format and include any necessary references/dependencies. By using .vsix as the deployment mechanism, as samples are installed from the site they are kept in your Visual Studio 2010 Samples Gallery and kept for your future reference. If you get a chance, check out the site and see how it is done. Although a somewhat simple concept, I was very impressed with their implementation and the way they went about trying to suit a need. I’ll definitely be looking there in the future as need something or want to share something. MSDN Search Capabilities Another item I learned recently and was not aware of (that might seem trivial to some) is the power of the MSDN site’s search capabilities. Between the Code Samples Gallery described above and the search enhancements on MSDN, Microsoft is definitely investing in their platform to help provide developers of all skill levels the tools and resources they need to be successful. What do I mean by the MSDN search capability and why should you care? If you go to the MSDN home page (http://msdn.microsoft.com) and use the “Search MSDN with Big” box at the very top of the page you will see some very interesting results. First, the search actually doesn’t just search the MSDN library it searches: MSDN Library All Microsoft Blogs CodePlex StackOverflow Downloads MSDN Magazine Support Knowledgebase (I’m not sure it even ends there but the above are all I know of) Beyond just searching all the above locations, the results are formatted very nicely to give some contextual information based on where the result came from. For example, if a keyword search returned results from CodePlex, each row in the search results screen would include a large amount of information specific to CodePlex such as: Looking at the above results immediately tells you everything from the page views to the CodePlex ratings. All in all, knowing that this much information is indexed and available from a single search location will lead me to utilize this as one of my initial searches for development information.

• Upgrade to 2008 R2

  I don't like it, Carruthers. It's just too quiet. Well, I've done the pre-production server, the main live server and the Reporting/BI server with remarkably little trouble. Pre-production and live were rebuilds. I failed live over to our log shipping standby for the duration, which has a gotcha I blogged about before. When I failed back to the primary live server again, it was very quick to bring the databases online. I understand the databases don't actually get upgraded until you recover them but there was no noticable delay. It's gone from 2005 Workgroup - limited to 4GB of memory - to 2008 R2 Standard so it can now use nearly all of the 30GB in the server. It's soo much faster. The reporting/BI server I upgraded in situ. This took a while but, again, went smoothly. Just watch out, because the master database was left at compatibility level 90. Also the upgrade decided to use the reporting service's credentials for database access when running reports. It didn't preserve the existing credentials and I had to go into the Reporting Configuration Manager to put them back in. Make sure you know what credentials your server is using before you upgrade. All things considered, a fairly painless experience. Now I just have to upgrade and reset our log shipping standby server again!

• jackd fails to start

  I'm trying to have a setup where JACK interfaces directly to ALSA and pulseaudio communicates to JACK. This setup worked OK (I had to manually start things a few times) but as I understood the Ubuntu daemon setup and perfected things jackd stopped working completely. I'm running 10.10. If I run something through ALSA I get sound no problem. However, when I run jack with realtime: /usr/bin/jackd -v -R -ch -Z -t2000 -d alsa -P I get the following error: jackd watchdog: timeout - killing jackd Conversely, if I run without realtime: /usr/bin/jackd -v -r -ch -Z -t2000 -d alsa -P I get: ALSA: poll time out, polled for 32032138 usecs DRIVER NT: could not run driver cycle Jack was working just fine before I made these changes; while I don't have an exact copy of my original configuration I recall running the bare minimum of options worked fine. I've seen some articles saying the problem is with ALSA capture. In fact, I tried enabling capture in alsamixer once and everything worked! On reboot that success was not repeated and I haven't been able to get jack working since. That shouldn't matter because specifying -P should obviate any capture issues. Short summary: I can't get jackd to work under any circumstances (unless I specify -d dummy). Sound works with other programs with ALSA, but when I run JACK the daemon opens the card but times out and dies. JACK worked fine before but I can't figure out what changed (or where to even look). I should mention I am running with CPU speed throttling on, but I'm using HPET to mitigate this (and I've run jack with no issue before). Thanks!

• Error starting nginx and passenger 3 for Rails app on Suse Linux

  I have configured passenger on SuSe Linux using simple configuration procedure (calling passenger command and then installing all libraries wich are needed), but now it throws an error.. • Phpmyadmin Not Working

  I recently installed phpmyadmin onto ubuntu server 10.04 using sudo apt-get install phpmyadmin The installation went fine and everything was working including phpmyadmin. I then performed a restart of the server and now apache2 starts up but when I navigate to http://192.168.1.72/phpmyadmin/ I am getting a 403 error. • Error on `gksu nautilus` because Nautilus cannot create folder "/root/.config/nautilus"

  I have a problem executing nautilus in root mode on a fresh installation. I just installed Ubuntu 12.04, and the first thing I did after first boot was run the command gksudo nautilus, I've got this error message: Nautilus could not create the required folder "/root/.config/nautilus". Before running Nautilus, please create the following folder, or set permissions such that Nautilus can create it. I am triple booting Windows 7, Fedora 17 and Ubuntu 12.04. My partition configuration is this: sda1 --> (ntfs) Windows 7 boot partition sda2 --> (ntfs) Windows 7 sda3 --> (ext4) Fedora 17 /boot partition sda4 --> Extended partition sda5 --> LVM Fedora 17, with 3 partitions inside (/, /home and swap) sda6 --> (ext4) Ubuntu 12.04 /boot partition sda7 --> (ext4) Ubuntu 12.04 swap partition sda8 --> (ext4) Ubuntu 12.04 / partition sda9 --> (ext4) Ubuntu 12.04 /home partition The MBR is using Windows, so is this one which is controlling the machine boot menu. Looks like Nautilus does not have permission to write in /root/.config, but it should right? I prefer asking before doing nothing wrong. Any ideas?

• Can't install TeamViewer on Ubuntu 12.04

  I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop. I was a Windows user but I want to start using Ubuntu from now on. Everything goes well except installation of the teamviewer. I have downloaded the file from the official website. There, it says that just double click on the *.deb file and it will install it automatically. Well, it gives an error: Failed to remove essential system package, You requested to remove a package which is an essential part of your system. Then I tried the second way of installation, which is on the terminal. I types as suggested: sudo dpkg -i teamviewer_linux.deb. It started installing but later on failed. HEre is the copy of the screen. Preparing to replace teamviewer7:i386 7.0.9377 (using teamviewer_linux.deb) ... Unpacking replacement teamviewer7:i386 ... dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of teamviewer7:i386: teamviewer7:i386 depends on bash (>= 3.0). teamviewer7:i386 depends on libc6 (>= 2.7). teamviewer7:i386 depends on libasound2. teamviewer7:i386 depends on zlib1g. teamviewer7:i386 depends on libxext6. dpkg: error processing teamviewer7:i386 (--install): dependency problems - leaving unconfigured Errors were encountered while processing: teamviewer7:i386 I have already checked these dependent files in Synaptic and they are all installed. • OData.org updated, gives clues about future SQL Azure enhancements

  The OData website at http://www.odata.org/home has been updated today to provide a much more engaging page than the previous sterile attempt. Moreover its now chockful of information about the progress of OData including a blog, a list of products that produce OData feeds plus some live OData feeds that you can hit up today, a list of OData-compliant clients and an FAQ. Most interestingly SQL Azure is listed as a producer of OData feeds: If you have a SQL Azure database account you can easily expose an OData feed through a simple configuration portal. You can select authenticated or anonymous access and expose different OData views according to permissions granted to the specified SQL Azure database user. • Silverlight 5 &ndash; What&rsquo;s New? (Including Screenshots &amp; Code Snippets)

  Silverlight 5 is coming next year (2011) and this blog post will tell you what you need to know before the beta ships. First, let me address people saying that it is dead after PDC 2010. I believe that it’s best to see what the market is doing, not the vendor. Below is a list of companies that are developing Silverlight 4 applications shown during the Silverlight Firestarter. Some of the companies have shipped and some haven’t. It’s just great to see the actual company names that are working on Silverlight instead of “people are developing for Silverlight”. The next thing that I wanted to point out was that HTML5, WPF and Silverlight can co-exist. In case you missed Scott Gutherie’s keynote, they actually had a slide with all three stacked together. This shows Microsoft will be heavily investing in each technology.  Even I, a Silverlight developer, am reading Pro HTML5. Microsoft said that according to the Silverlight Feature Voting site, 21k votes were entered. Microsoft has implemented about 70% of these votes in Silverlight 5. That is an amazing number, and I am crossing my fingers that Microsoft bundles Silverlight with Windows 8. Let’s get started… what’s new in Silverlight 5? I am going to show you some great application and actual code shown during the Firestarter event. Media Hardware Video Decode – Instead of using CPU to decode, we will offload it to GPU. This will allow netbooks, etc to play videos. Trickplay – Variable Speed Playback – Pitch Correction (If you speed up someone talking they won’t sound like a chipmunk). Power Management – Less battery when playing video. Screensavers will no longer kick in if watching a video. If you pause a video then screensaver will kick in. Remote Control Support – This will allow users to control playback functions like Pause, Rewind and Fastforward. IIS Media Services 4 has shipped and now supports Azure. Data Binding Layout Transitions – Just with a few lines of XAML you can create a really rich experience that is not using Storyboards or animations. RelativeSource FindAncestor – Ancestor RelativeSource bindings make it much easier for a DataTemplate to bind to a property on a container control. Custom Markup Extensions – Markup extensions allow code to be run at XAML parse time for both properties and event handlers. This is great for MVVM support. Changing Styles during Runtime By Binding in Style Setters – Changing Styles at runtime used to be a real pain in Silverlight 4, now it’s much easier. Binding in style setters allows bindings to reference other properties. XAML Debugging – Below you can see that we set a breakpoint in XAML. This shows us exactly what is going on with our binding.  WCF & RIA Services WS-Trust Support – Taken from Wikipedia: WS-Trust is a WS-* specification and OASIS standard that provides extensions to WS-Security, specifically dealing with the issuing, renewing, and validating of security tokens, as well as with ways to establish, assess the presence of, and broker trust relationships between participants in a secure message exchange. You can reduce network latency by using a background thread for networking. Supports Azure now.  Text and Printing Improved text clarity that enables better text rendering. Multi-column text flow, Character tracking and leading support, and full OpenType font support.  Includes a new Postscript Vector Printing API that provides control over what you print . Pivot functionality baked into Silverlight 5 SDK. Graphics Immediate mode graphics support that will enable you to use the GPU and 3D graphics supports. Take a look at what was shown in the demos below. 1) 3D view of the Earth – not really a real-world application though. A doctor’s portal. This demo really stood out for me as it shows what we can do with the 3D / GPU support. Out of Browser OOB applications can now create and manage childwindows as shown in the screenshot below.  Trusted OOB applications can use P/Invoke to call Win32 APIs and unmanaged libraries.  Enterprise Group Policy Support allow enterprises to lock down or up the sandbox capabilities of Silverlight 5 applications. In this demo, he tore the “notes” off of the application and it appeared in a new window. See the black arrow below. In this demo, he connected a USB Device which fired off a local Win32 application that provided the data off the USB stick to Silverlight. Another demo of a Silverlight 5 application exporting data right into Excel running inside of browser. Testing They demoed Coded UI, which is available now in the Visual Studio Feature Pack 2. This will allow you to create automated testing without writing any code manually. Performance: Microsoft has worked to improve the Silverlight startup time. Silverlight 5 provides 64-bit browser support.  Silverlight 5 also provides IE9 Hardware acceleration.   I am looking forward to Silverlight 5 and I hope you are too. • Using apache reverse proxy for Domino inotes 8.5

  I have setup access for the users to their mailfiles on Domino 8.5.1 using Inotes. The reverse proxy in use is Apache. It works fine. This is the current configuration i am using. Virtual host is commented out. The user types e.f.g.h and is being pointed to a.b.c.d and this works correctly without using virtual host. • make IIS 7.5 cache static content files over diferent pages

  On a Windows 2008 R2, using DNS and IIS I've established my development test server; i.e. I'll have a web application that I can browse on http://test.dev I've moved all the static content files like images, js files and css files into another application which is visible on http://cdn.test.dev test.dev, uses cdn.test.dev urls like http://cdn.test.dev/js/jquery.js to load js, css and images. When I first load "~/" of test.dev, all files will load with a response code of 200; when I press F5 in Firefox, all files, except the "~/default.aspx", will load with 304 response code; but pressing Ctrl+F5 loads them again with a 200 code; if I browse another url like "~/pages/" in test.dev, all of those static files will reload with a 200 code... Is this normal or I'm doing something wrong? Actually, I'm looking for a behavior like this: I want the client to load http://cdn.test.dev/js/jquery.js, only once. I want the client's browser to use this jquery.js file, from cache, in all other pages of test.dev Is this possible?   I'm having issues mounting an NFS share I've made on my Mac host (server) from a Centos VM (client). I'm getting a permission denied error. I have this line in /etc/exports on server: /Users/adam/Sites/ 192.168.1.223(rw) and in /etc/fstab on client: 192.168.1.186:/Users/adam/Sites/ /home/adam/Sites/ nfs rw 0 0 I'm sure this is a simple configuration issue, but I've never set up NFS properly before.   I'm setting a local webserver to do a lot of web development work from now on. I'm not really knowledgeable in hosting configuration. Thing is I just added mydomain.com in /etc/hosts that's fine but what's the next step? TI need to use the wildcard on *.mydomain.com, so I'm figuring I need to add my zone in bind, is this correct? so I can make use of virtual hosts in apache and in play-framework Everything will be local, but once in a while I want to make public of my webserver to certain people using the no-ip service, in windows I've done it, in linux I don't know if it's any difference. The question is pretty much if I'm configuring it right or not? If this sounds confusing let me know, I'll try to detail it more

• How do I remove the Conduit toolbar that comes with µTorrent?

  I have recently installed µTorrent in my computer and unfortunately the Conduit adware came bundled with it. Basically, it installs a toolbar on all browsers and replaces the default search and initial homepage to that of Conduit. I have tried to run AdAware and MalwareBytes but both were unable to remove it. Search results on Google tell me to remove the Conduit software in the Control Panel → Remove Programs, but it's not listed there. Other suggestions involved going into the extensions configuration in Chrome, but it's not listed there as well. Anybody had the same problem?

• Sucky MSTest and the "WaitAll for multiple handles on a STA thread is not supported" Error

  If you are doing any multi-threading and are using MSTest, you will probably run across this error. For some reason, MSTest by default runs in STA threading mode. WTF, Microsoft! Why so stuck in the old COM world?  When I run the same test using NUnit, I don't have this problem. Unfortunately, my company has chosen MSTest, so I have a lot of testing problems. NUnit is so much better, IMO. After determining that I wasn't referencing any unmanaged code that would flip the thread into STA, which can also cause this error, the only thing left was the testing suite I was using. I dug around a little and found this obscure setting for the Test Run Config settings file that you can't set using its interface. You have to open it up as a text file and add the following setting:  <ExecutionThread apartmentState="MTA" /> This didn't break any other tests, so I'm not sure why it's not the default, or why there is nothing in the test run configuration app to change this setting. • Unable to Turn On Media Streaming in Windows Media Player 12 on Windows 7

  I have 2 PC installed with Windows 7 and Media Player 12. I would like to use Play To feature on both PC connected via LAN. Both PC (A and B) run media player in standard user account. I able to turn on media streaming option in PC A (with privilege access prompt) without any problem. However, PC B also prompt privilege access but no response after enter administrator password. Both PC follow same configuration steps. I may use "play to" PC A (in standard user account) from other PC without any problem. But I can't "play to" PC B in standard user account. I can only run media player in administrator account for "play to" to function. I have tried uninstall and reinstall media player via "Programs and Features" in control panel on PC B. However, it doesn't work too. Does anyone has similar experience as me failing to turn on media streaming that running Windows media player in standard user account?

• How to push changes from Test server to Live server?

  As a beginner, I finally noticed the issue with making changes to the live server I've been working on, now that I have a couple users on it, since I bring it down so often. I created an EC2 image of my live server and set up a separate instance on EC2, so now I have 2 EC2 instances, Stage and Production. I set up GitHub and push changes to stage and test my code there, and when it's all done and working, I push it to the production branch, and everything is good. And there is a slight issue here since I name my files config_stage.js and config_production.js and set up .gitignore on each server, and in my code, I would have it read the ENV flags and set up the appropriate configs, is this the correct approach? And my main question is: how do you keep track of non-code changes to the server? For example, I installed HAProxy, Stunnel, Redis, MongoDB and several other things onto the Stage server for testing and now that it's all working and good, how do I deploy them to production? Right now, I'm just keeping track of everything I installed and copying configuration files over, which is very tedious and I'm afraid I may have missed a step somewhere. Is there a better way to port these changes over from my test server to my live server?
