• User profile and desktop unclickable and unviewable from windows explorer

  Situation: Windows Vista, latest updates. After restarting to complete an installation, I find myself looking at a totally black windows desktop without any icons. The start menu and taskbar, including quickstart icons, appears. Some, but not all task bar tray icons appear. The systems seems stable. When I open Windows Explorer and click "desktop" in the folder treeview, the cursor immediately jumps back to the previously selected item. No error. Same when clicking on my user's profile or my documents. When I try "save as" in, say, Notepad, nothing happens, the dialog box (which defaults to "my documents") doesn't even show. Again, no error. Nothing serious afaict in the event log. Typing something Start Search shows "Search failed to initialize". Anybody ever encountered such abomination?

• Why do Finder and du report different file size?

  I am writing a geektool 3 script to show the size of a particular VMware Fusion virtual machine. Get Info in Finder says the file is "52.91 GB". I run the following du command to get the file size: > du -hs ~/Documents/Virtual\ Machines.localized/MY-PRECIOUS-7.vmwarevm | awk '{print $1}' This du -hs command returns the file size as "49G". What accounts for the difference from what Finder reports? Alternatively, I have tried replacing the -s option with the -d option like so: du -hd ~/Documents/Virtual\ Machines.localized/MY-PRECIOUS-7.vmwarevm | awk '{print $1}' This du -hd command returns the file size as "59G". What accounts for the difference between Finder, du -hd, and du -hs? Also, this du -hd command produces no output in geektool 3. What gives?

• Active Desktop cannot be restored on Win XP

  This is more of a major annoyance than anything that's stopping me from doing my work, but I somehow seem to have had Active Desktop on my work XP machine get corrupted and now can't get it back working again. I've tried browsing to C:\Documents and Settings\%my-user-name%\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer and changing, deleting or replacing the Desktop.htt file, but it's not achieving anything. The error I was previously getting when trying to click the "Restore my active desktop" button was: Internet Explorer Script Error An error has occurred in the script on this page. Line: 65 Char: 1 Error: Object doesn't support this action Code: 0 URL: file://C:/Documents%20and%20Settings//Application %20Data/Microsoft/Internet%20Explorer/Desktop.htt Any ideas?

• Restore Default OSX Home Folder Icons

  I want to keep folders such as Pictures and Documents in my home folder in sync between computers; at the moment, I'm using Dropbox to do this. On Computer A I added a symlink to the folders in my home directory to the Dropbox folder. On Computer B I deleted the existing Pictures and Documents folders and replaced them with symlinks to the folders in the Dropbox folder. This works very well, except that in Finder I don't see the nice little icons that Lion has by default for folders of a particular kind. Is there any way to restore these?

• Picasa access in android: PicasaUploadActivity

  I am new to Android, and I'm struggling to figure out exactly what tools are available to me. I am developing for android 2.0.1 for now, just because that is what my device runs. Specifically, I am writing an app that I would like to upload images to a picasa album. I am almost sure this is supported; for example, the built in (google?) photo viewer has a 'share' button with a picasa option, and even a small bit of sample code, including the snippet [borrowed code! apologies if this is against the rules..] temp.setComponent(new ComponentName ("com.google.android.apps.uploader", "com.google.android.apps.uploader.picasa.PicasaUploadActivity")); startActivityForResult(temp, PICASA_INTENT) which looks like exactly what I want. But I can find no documentation anywhere. I am in fact quite unclear how to use this type of resource. From within eclipse, do I need to include another project, com.google.android.apps.uploader? If so, how do I get it? How do I include it? Is there any working sample code provided for me to peer at?

• Terminal issues on OS X with XAMPP and Yii framework

  I'm trying to configure the Yii framework but am having problems with the terminal commands, and am also having difficulty setting up the webapp demo. I am using Mac OS X Snow Leopard and have installed XAMPP and placed the 'yii' folder in the xamppfiles \ htdocs folder. I have verified the http://localhost/yii/requirements/index.php which is working fine. I have tried the following but nothing seems to work so if anyone can point out what I'm doing wrong it would be very much appreciated. In fact any directory I search for is not recognized (see below) so I'm thinking I need to do something else for this to work but I have searched and searched but found no answer. ~ Jake$ /applications/xampp/xamppfiles/yii -bash: /applications/xampp/xamppfiles/yii: No such file or directory ~ Jake$ /documents -bash: /documents: No such file or directory

• Have SkyDrive not sync some subfolders of "SkyDrive"

  I am working with SkyDrive for a while now and it is GREAT! The only downside is that I am syncing my laptop and my desktop and that they don't have the same files. Example: For recording, I have Cubase installed on my laptop. This programme creates a folder "Cubase LE" in "My Documents". "My Documents" is being sync'd. This means, that on my desktop a folder will appear, named "Cubase LE". But it is not needed there at all! So what I'm looking for is an option to disable some folders from being sync'd. Can this be done? Like, right-clicking on a folder and selecting an option "Don't sync with SkyDrive". Thanks.

• Box.com file sharing - How are you managing concurrent document access and file locks? [closed]

  My company is evaluating Box.com as a file server replacement. It's file locking behavior for concurrent access to files seems incomplete. Specifically, files are not locked* (either exclusive or read-only) when they are being edited by Office or similar programs. This inevitably results in multiple versions of documents as concurrent access results in change conflicts. *The exception is when the file is edited using Zoho Docs - perhaps other web-based office suites as well. Box provides multiple options for editing documents, including Google Docs, a local copy of Office or similar, Zoho Docs and others. If you are using Box how have you managed or worked around this behavior?

• Windows Remote-App Server 2012 Office 2013 User Settings not saved

  I have a Windows Server 2012 with RemoteApps enabled. It's running the latest Patches etc. It has Office 2013 installed and Excel and Word are shared to all users. Now I got the Problem that after each Reboot all User Settings are lost. I have a few users who pin previously opened Documents so they dont need to remember all Paths and those are all gone after Reboot. Also last opened Documents is empty and after a Server reboot it brings the office 2013 Window for First time setup where it asks if you want to connect to skydrive and all that. In the RemoteApps Collection I enabled a Userprofile-Drive 100GB drive E: for Storing User profile data. There is a Domain of course and there is no GPO Preventing the user from Storing settings etc. We also got an older Terminal Server 2003 in the same Domain where this is not happening. Any ideas why this is happening that all the Settings are lost after Reboot?

• What would interfere with changing the default application for opening files on OS X?

  I know how to change the default application for opening files. I select a file in Finder, right-click and select Get Info from the context menu. In the file's Info window, expand the Open with: panel. In that panel is a combo box that says, in my case, Adobe Flash CS4. I click the combo box and select Flash Player. It changes. Then I click the Change All... button. A dialog pops up and says: Are you sure you want to change all similar documents to open with the application “Adobe Flash CS4”? This change will apply to all documents with extension “.swf”. Cancel/Continue Well, clicking Continue does exactly what the message says. It sets the Finder to open all swf files with Adobe Flash CS4. What is going on? Why doesn't the message say, .... "Flash Player"

• Acrobat 9.3.2 printing hidden fields automatically

  We have a few clients internally running Acrobat Standard 9.0.0 and their documents are printing fine. One user upgraded to 9.3.2, and now when they try and print some of our documents, a hidden field area is automatically printing. I can't seem to find a way to turn it off. It doesn't appear in the document, or in print preview. Choosing to Examing the document and remove it removes the text, but not the spacing that the hidden area added. is there a setting to never print this? It's not something we want to have to adjust each time we open a document.

• Weird URL parse issue. (Android)

  I am attempting to parse in a URL to a KML file from maps.google.com. When I try and use this link: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=112748174025829638330.000483ad6315714cc941d&z=13&output=kml` I am unable to overlay this KML file on my MapView. If I were to take the KML file that I get from following this link and upload it to my Dropbox it will work just fine. I think there may be something about the URL from Google that it doesn't like? Link from dropbox: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1037184/Blue_original.kml Also it would be better if we could just save these KML files locally and pass them in the same way but I can't figure out a way to do this. Here is the code I am using: Intent mapIntent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_VIEW); Uri uri1 = Uri.parse("geo:0,0?q=http://code.google.com/apis/kml/ documentation/KML_Samples.kml"); mapIntent.setData(uri1); startActivity(Intent.createChooser(mapIntent, "Test")); The URL used in this example also works. • How to convert PowerPoint presentations into a Kindle/E-reader friendly form?

  I have a lot of documents in .ppt and .pptx (blame the co-workers). I would like to read them on way home or elsewhere... when I have a little time to catch up with things. One thing I could do with the documents is cutting them together into one file. But saving that one even if a smaller version of PDF (according to Office 2010) results in a huge file. And PDF is hardly readable on a Kindle. I would need something .epub free, easy-on-the-device way. Is there such a thing? (Manually I could copy all the images down into native text and whatnot and create new presentations, save those, convert them. But that would just take a lot of time.)

• Windows 7 x64 Pro not indexing PDF content ?

  In an attemp to get rid of all the paper clutter that I receive each day, I started scanning and ORCing all my important documents last year. I was using Windows Desktop Search on Vista to index my "Administrative" folder in which I keep all these scanned documents, to be able to quickly retreive them when needed. I upgraded to Windows 7 RTM recently (I got the x64 Pro version, via the MSDN-AA channel of my university). Since then, it seems that the content of the PDFs is not indexed anymore. For example, I have the warranty for my GTX260 graphic card. In the PDF, using Acrobat Reader, I can search for the string "GTX260" and it finds the relevant lines. However, if I perform the same search in the folder containing the PDF, nothing is found. I checked in the indexing options, the folder is supposed to be indexed.

  Task at hand: Microsoft sign drivers on Win 7. I microsoft signed my driver package 3 times every time thinking I might have missed a step or something. However, I cannot seem to get rid of the Windows Security error message "Windows can't verify the publisher of this driver software'. This is not the first time I have signed the driver packages. I was successfully able to sign other driver packages a few months ago. However, with this driver package I keep getting Windows security dialog box. Here's the procedure I follow - Create a new cat file using INF2CAT tool. Self sign the driver using a Versign Class 3 Public Primary Certification Authority - G5.cer. Run the microsoft tests on DTM Servers and clients with the devices that use this driver. Create WLK submission package. Self sign the cab file. Submit the package for certification. The catalog file that comes back after successfully passing tests says Name of signer "Microsoft Windows Hardware Comptibility Publisher". When I check the validity of signature using SignTool, it says the signature is vaild. However, when I try to install the driver with new signed catalog file the windows complain. Any ideas? I am using the same certificate I used when I signed those two driver packages a few months ago. It costs $250 per signing from Microsoft. • How to configure custom error page in Plesk 9.3 for non existing folder?

  I'm trying to configure Plesk in order to show website visitors a custom error html. The current hosted site is an ASP.NET site. This site shows its custom errors on error403.aspx and error404.aspx files. Now to comply with plesk, I've created error_docs with required files like forbidden.html, etc... When user try to navigate http://mysite.com/a_missing_page.aspx, the visitor is redirected to error404.aspx correctly. But when user try to navigate to a non existent directory http://mysite.com/a_missing_folder/ the site takes me to IIS 404 regular page. Plesk has Custom error documents activated on Web hosting settings. ASP.NET Error pages defined in web.config are showing fine. But it seems plesk wont show its custom html error documents. The bottom line here is about setting up a custom error page to a directory. Is it possible to do this using Plesk or do I have to change it manually on IIS?

• Unable to use NTFS partition for Dropbox in Linux

  Dropbox won't let me choose the sync folder inside a NTFS partition. First thought I had was mounting and its permissions (the Dropbox installer does let me choose my linux home as the Dropbox home). After searching and trying several other lines, the partition is mounted via fstab with these settings: /dev/sda5 /mnt/documents ntfs-3g uid=1000,gid=100,dmask=027,fmask=137 0 0 I can read and write in the partition, here is a ls output: 24 drwxr-x--- 1 tuxcayc users 24576 Sep 2 06:42 documents I'm using an Arch-based distro (Manjaro) and Dropbox installed via yaourt. I guess it's still some issue with mounting permissions. Any help is appreciated, Thanks.

• PHP not working when accessed through a domain name, but works fine when accessed through IP

  Done a basic setup of Ubuntu Server installing Apache, PHP and mysql through tasksel. When I browse to the IP address of the server it works fine and allows me to render PHP scripts fine. So I added a DNS entry for the server onto my local DNS server, calling it webdev.lazer.net When I go to this domain name through my browser it renders HTML documents fine but if I try to view PHP scripts it doesn't render and downloads in plain text to the browser (As if the PHP parser isn't rendering .php documents). I'm sure its some rookie mistake, but any help would be appreciated. Thanks

• Why does Windows spooler require an administrator account?

  Does anyone know what changes I might need to make to allow restricted users to print using a printer configured for spooling? My Windows XP SP3 system currently requires me to use an Admin account for printing if the printer is configured to spool documents before printing. If the printer is configured for direct printing it works for all accounts. This used to work and some months back it just stopped, and I can't pin down why. The printer, which is an HP PSC 1200 (an old printer) itself is configured for Everyone to have Print authority and my specific (restricted) account to have Full authority, that is Print, Manage Printers and Manager Documents. My HDD is locked down for restricted users given them only read authority to the entire file system except their data directories, which is how I have run my systems for years. I assume there may be a directory somewhere that I need to allow users to write to.

• Disable Save Changes dialoge in Adobe Reader X

  Yes, I've read and done the steps listed here with no results: Disable 'Save changes' dialog in Adobe Reader Basically what happens is with certain pdf documents, whenever I try to close them, it prompts me to save changes. This baffles me, as per their FAQ, Reader can't save anything, and I didn't make changes to the document in the first place. The one cause I could think of would be that the documents may not have been created with Adobe software, and as such may not write the pdfs in a way that makes Adobe happy.

• best way to switch between secure and unsecure connection without bugging the user

  The problem I am trying to tackle is simple. I have two pages - the first is a registration page, I take in a few fields from the user, once they submit it takes them to another page that processes the data, stores it to a database, and if successful, gives a confirmation message. Here is my issue - the data from the user is sensitive - as in, I'm using an https connection to ensure no eavesdropping. After that is sent to the database, I'd like on the confirmation page to do some nifty things like Google Maps navigation (this is for a time reservation application). The problem is by using the Google Maps api, I'd be linking to items through a unsecure source, which in turn prompts the user with a nasty warning message. I've browsed around, Google has an alternative to enterprise clients, but it costs $10,000 a year. What I am hoping is to find a workaround - use a secure connection to take in the data, and after it is processed, bring them to a page that isn't secure and allows me to utilize the Google Maps API. If any of you have a Netflix account you can see exactly what I would like to do when you sign-in, it is a secure page, which then takes you to your account / queue, on an unsecure page.   I'm trying to install a second version of PHP, to run alongside the current version of php. I've compiled the latest php source from github (5.5-DEV), and I'm trying to run it as CGI. I would like to have the different versions of php on different virtual hosts

  Say currently I have url like : http://mydomain.com/showpost.php?p=123 Now I want to make it prettier : http://mydomain.com/123/post-title I'm using apache rewrite which grabs segment '123' and put the url back to http://mydomain.com/showpost.php?p=123 OK. Here is the problem. I want to redirect the original non-pretty urls which were indexed by Google to the pretty versions, I want this because I heard that Google may punish me if he sees multiple urls pointing to identical content. So I need to redirect /showpost.php?p=123 to /123/post-title This I have to do in my php code coz there's no way Apache to be able to figure out the 'post-title', but if I put the redirect code in php code, then it will be a infinite loop, such as : Request : /showpost.php?p=123 redirected to : /123/post-title rewritten to: /showpost.php?p=123 redirected again to : /123/post-title ... So on and so forth. Sorry I should Google the solution first but I really don't know how to describe my situation in English to make Google return reasonable results. Please help me. Thanks.
