• Master-Details with RadGridView for Silverlight 4, WCF RIA Services RC2 and Entity Framework 4.0

  I have prepared a sample project with the Silverlight 4 version of RadGridView released yesterday. The sample project was created with Visual Studio 2010, WCF RIA Services RC 2 for Visual Studio 2010, and ADO.NET Entity Framework (.NET 4). I have decided to use the SalesOrderHeader and SalesOrderDetails tables from the Adventure Works Database, because they provide the perfect one-to-many relationship: I will not go over the steps for creating the ADO.NET Entity Data Model and the Domain Service Class. In case you are not familiar with them, you should start with Brad Abrams series of blog posts and read this blog after that. To enable the master-details relationship we need to modify two things. First of all we need to include the automatic retrieval of the child entities in the domain service class. • Attempting to migrate to Aptana from Dreamweaver - how to?

  I have been using Dreamweaver for years, and have used Dreamweaver MX, Dreamweaver MX 2004, Dreamweaver 8 & Dreamweaver CS4. They all carry a common theme and were relatively easy to migrate to each other. I use, however, very few features of dreamweaver. Specifically: Syntax highlighting Telesense FTP management/site management The search/replace The idea I get from Aptana is its much more geared toward the web development/programmer side of things, have better visualizations of classes, etc., and handle everything else just as well. The problem is it is not at all clear to me. I managed to start a new project, but it didn't associate it with an FTP. So, I created an FTP, and it looks like I can have many FTPs for one project. My question then is, is there a tutorial or guide to migrating to Aptana from a Dreamweavor's perspective?

• Problems locating Redmine database

  I have an active redmine but I can not find the database where it is running right now. It should be on PostgreSQL but the database where it should be running is empty. Does anybody have any idea how to check current database used by redmine? Please let me know if you need any extra information. Thank you EDIT: Ok I know the database it is using. On the database.yml I have project_redmine but it is using the database project I dont know why. That database it is used by developers for the actual project. So that is getting me problems of course. I am unable to run it on the right DB (project_redmine) any ideas? :S

• Visual Studio 2010 Winform Application &ndash; Unable to resolve custom assemblies?

  Recently I surfaced a problem where, one of my friend had a tough time in getting rid of an assembly reference error.  Despite adding reference to the assembly, while referencing it in code, it was spitting out the “The type or namespace name ‘ASSEMBLYNAME’ could not be found” error.   This was a migration project and owing to the above error, it was throwing another 100 errors. We tried adding reference to the assembly in other projects and it was not even resolving the namespace while typing out in the using section. Upon further digging into the error warnings, it indicated something to do with the .NET Framework targeted i.e. 4.0.  My suspicion grew since the target framework was 4.0 and the assembly should be able to be recognized.  Then, when we checked “Project – “<APPNAME> Properties…”, the issue was with the default target framework which is “.NET Framework 4 Client Profile” By default, Visual Studio 2010 creates Windows Forms App/WPF Apps with the Target Framework set to .NET Framework 4 Client Profile.  This is to minimize the framework size required to be bundled along with the app. Client Profile is new feature since .NET 3.5 SP1 that allows users to package a minified version of .NET Framework that doesn’t include stuff such as ASP.NET, Server programming assemblies and few other assemblies which are typically never used in the Desktop Applications. Since the .NET Framework client profile is a minified version, it doesn’t contain all the assemblies related to Web services and other deprecated assemblies.  However, this application is a migration app and needed some of the references from Services and hence couldn’t run. Once, we changed the Target Framework to .NET Framework 4 instead of the default client profile, the application compiled. It was sad for so many reasons, not the least being that Sweden during that part of the year is cold and dark. ;) This year, however, I will be contributing two talks: ---> HotRockit – What to Expect from Oracle’s Converged JVM Oracle is converging the HotSpot and JRockit JVMs to produce a "best of breed JVM". Internally the project is sometimes referred to as the HotRockit project. There is already a large influx of ideas and solutions provided by the JRockit JVM into the Open JDK. • How to deal with OpenGL and Fullscreen on OS X

  I do most of my development on OS X and for my current game project this is my target environment. However when I play games I play on Windows. As a windows gamer I am used to Alt+Tab switching from within the game to the last application that was open. On OS X I currently can't find either a game that supports that nor can I find a way to make it possible. My current project is based on SDL 1.3 and I can see that cmd+tab is a sequence that is sent directly to my application and not intercepted by the operating system. Now my first attempt was to hide the rendering window on cmd+tab which certainly works, but has the disadvantage that a hidden OpenGL window in SDL cannot be restored when the user tabs back to the application. First of all, there is no event fired for that or I can't find it, secondly the core problem is that when that application window is hidden, my game is still the active application, just that the window disappeared. That is incredible annoying. Any ideas how to approximate the windows / linux behavior for alt+tab?

• Using Subversion with SQL Server Management Studio

  I am a member of a team with 3 developers. We have started using Redmine here for project management and issue tracking and LOVE it. I have seen elsewhere how nicely Redmine can work when a back-end repository is set up for a project. There is nice integration all around. This shop is currently .Net and SQL Server 2005. I am thinking about recommending a move to Subversion for our VCS (so that we can integrate with Redmine). I have seen a product called VisualSVN which will make it possible to use Visual Studio with Subversion, so that covers .Net. But the other big question is if it is possible to configure SQL Server Management Studio to somehow use Subversion for its VCS. Has anyone done this? This shop is currently using Sourcegear Fortress.

• Dryad and DryadLINQ from MSR

  Microsoft Research (MSR) researches technologies, incubates projects which many times result in technology that looks like a ready-to-use product (but it is important to understand that these are not the same as products built by the various… actual product teams here at Microsoft). A very popular MSR project has been DryadLINQ, which itself builds on Dryad. To learn more follow the project pages I just linked to and I also recommend this 1-hour channel 9 video. If you only have 3 minutes, watch this great elevator pitch instead. You can also stay tuned on the official blog, which includes a post that refers to internal adoption e.g by Bing, a quick DryadLINQ code example, and some history on how DryadLINQ generalizes the MapReduce pattern and makes it accessible to regular programmers (see this post and that post). Essentially, the DryadLINQ framework (building on the Dryad runtime) allows developers to re-use their LINQ skills for creating/generating programs that process large multi-gigabyte/terabyte datasets across 100s-1000s of machines. One way to think about it is that just as Parallel LINQ allows LINQ developers to seamlessly use multiple cores from a single process on a single machine, DryadLINQ allows LINQ developers to seamlessly use multiple machines for their data parallel algorithms. In the former scenario the motivation was speed of execution, in the latter it is speed of execution AND processing large datasets that simply don't fit on a single machine. Whenever I hear about execution of parallel code on multiple machines on the Microsoft platform, I immediately think of Windows HPC Server.   One thing an Information Rights Management technology should do well is separate out three main areas of responsibility.The business process of defining and controlling the classifications to which content is secured and the definition of the roles employees, customers, partners and contractors have when accessing secured content. Allow IT to manage the server and perform the role of authorizing the creation of new classifications to meet business needs but yet once the classification has been created and handed off to the business, IT no longer plays a role on the ongoing management. Empower the business to take ownership of classifications to which their own content is secured. For example an employee who is leading an acquisition project should be responsible for defining who has access to confidential project documents. This person should be able to manage the rights users have in the classification and also be the point of contact for those wishing to gain rights. Oracle IRM has since it's creation in the late 1990's had this core model at the heart of its design. Due in part to the important seperation of rights from the documents themselves, Oracle IRM places the right functionality within the right parts of the business. For example some IRM technologies allow the end user to make decisions about what users can print, edit or save a secured document. This in practice results in a wide variety of content secured with a plethora of options that don't conform to any policy. With Oracle IRM users choose from a list of classifications to which they have been given the ability to secure information against. Their role in the classification was given to them by the business owner of the classification, yet the definition of the role resides within the realm of corporate security who own the overall business classification policies. It is this type of design and philosophy in Oracle IRM that makes it an enterprise solution that works beyond a few users and a few secured documents to hundreds of thousands of users and millions of documents. • Host your own private git repository via SSH

  If you are like me you have tons of projects you would like to keep private but track with git, but do not want to pay a git host for a private plan. One of the problems is that most hosts scale their plans by project instead of users. Luckily, it is easy to host your own git repositories on any el cheapo host that provides ssh access. In the interest of full disclosure, I learned this trick from this blog post. I decided to recreate it in case the source material vanishes for some reason. To setup your host, login via ssh and run the following commands: mkdir ~/git/yourprojectname.git cd ~/git/yourprojectname.git git --bare init Then in your project directory (on your local machine): # setup your user info git config --global user.name "Firstname Lastname" git config --global user.email "[email protected]" # initialize the workspace git init git add . git commit -m "initial commit" git add remote origin ssh://[email protected]/~/git/yourprojectname.git git push origin master It’s that easy! To keep from entering your password every time add your public key to the server: Generate your key with ‘ssh-keygen -t rsa‘ on your local machine.  Then add the contents of the generated file to ~/.ssh/authorized_keys on your server.

  The costs of technology assets can become significant and the need to centralize, monitor and control the contribution of each technology asset becomes a paramount responsibility for many organizations. Through the implementation of various mechanisms, it is possible to obtain a holistic vision and develop synergies between different assets, empowering their re-utilization and analyzing the impact on the organization caused by IT changes. When the SOA domain is considered, the issue of governance should therefore always come into play. Although SOA governance is mandatory to achieve any measure of SOA success, its value still passes incognito in most organizations, mostly due to the lack of visibility and the detached view of the SOA initiatives. There are a number of problems that jeopardize the visibility of these initiatives: Understanding and measuring the value of SOA governance and its contribution – SOA governance tools are too technical and isolated from other systems. They are inadequate for anyone outside of the domain (Business Analyst, Project Managers, or even some Enterprise Architects), and are especially harsh at the CxO level. • Advantages of using pure JavaScript over JQuery

  What are the advantages of using Javascript-only versus using JQuery-only? I have limited experience with JavaScript and JQuery coding. I've added bits and snippets of each to HTML pages but I've mostly coded server-side stuff in other languages. I've noticed that while you can theoretically do the same things using either of the two approaches (and of course you can even mix 'em up in the same project) there seems to be a tendency to always start using JQuery from the very beginning no-matter what the project demands are. So I'm simply wondering, are there any punctual benefits to not use JQuery-only but instead to just use plain old JavaScript? I know this looks like a non-question because it can be said about it that "there's no definite answer" or "it can be debated for ever", but I'm actually hoping for punctual answers such as "You can do this in one approach and you cannot do it with the other". ==EDIT== As per scrwtp's comment, I'm not referring just to the DOM Handling part. My question is rather: JQuery is a library. For Javascript. What I find strange about this library as opposed to other libraries for other languages is that in JQyery's case it seems to be designed to be able to use it exclusively and not need to touch Javascript directly. This is as opposed to let's say Hibernate and SQL, where even though the library (or rather framework in this case, but I think the analogy still applies) takes the handle on A LOT of aspects, you still get to use SQL when using it, at least for some fringe cases. However in JQuery & Javascript case, you could do anything you do with Javascript using only JQuery (or at least that's how it seems to me).

• Persistence problem when installing USB Ubuntu variant using Windows

  I'm part of a project called One2One2Go - we're developing a Live USB Ubuntu variant for use in schools in Somerville, MA. We have the project files compiled into an iso, and when installed using the native Ubuntu Startup Disk Creator, the USB works fine. When installed using a tool on a Windows machine (LiLi at linuxliveusb.com or liveusb-creator at fedorahosted.org/liveusb-creator), the USB works, but does not have persistence. This happens even if the creator is specifically set to allocate an area for persistent files. When comparing files on sticks created in Windows or Ubuntu, the one file that is different is syslinux/syslinux.cfg. • Debugging .NET 2.0 assembly from unmanaged code in VS2010?

  I’ve run into a serious snag trying to debug a .NET 2.0 assembly that is called from unmanaged code in Visual Studio 2010. I maintain a host of components that using COM interop and custom .NET runtime hosting and ever since installing Visual Studio 2010 I’ve been utterly blocked by VS 2010’s inability to apparently debug .NET 2.0 assemblies when launching through unmanaged code. Here’s what I’m actually doing (simplified scenario to demonstrate): I have a .NET 2.0 assembly that is compiled for COM Interop Compile project with .NET 2.0 target and register for COM Interop Set a breakpoint in the .NET component in one of the class methods Instantiate the .NET component via COM interop and call method The result is that the COM call works fine but the debugger never triggers on the breakpoint. If I now take that same assembly and target it at .NET 4.0 without any other changes everything works as expected – the breakpoint set in the assembly project triggers just fine. The easy answer to this problem seems to be “Just switch to .NET 4.0” but unfortunately the application and the way the runtime is actually hosted has a few complications. Specifically the runtime hosting uses .NET 2.0 hosting and apparently the only reliable way to host the .NET 4.0 runtime is to use the new hosting APIs that are provided only with .NET 4.0 (which all by itself is lame, lame, lame as once again the promise of backwards compatibility is broken once again by .NET). So for the moment I need to continue using the .NET 2.0 hosting APIs due to application requirements. I’ve been searching high and low and experimenting back and forth, posted a few questions on the MSDN forums but haven’t gotten any hints on what might be causing the apparent failure of Visual Studio 2010 to debug my .NET 2.0 assembly properly when called from un-managed code. Incidentally debugging .NET 2.0 targeted assemblies works fine when running with a managed startup application – it seems the issue is specific to the unmanaged code starting up. My particular issue is with custom runtime hosting which at first I thought was the problem. But the same issue manifests when using COM Interop against a .NET 2.0 assembly, so the hosting is probably not the issue.   I have a rather middlish DokuWiki on a stick project documentation which I've always used offline, since I was the only author which did documentation. Now the mentioned project is somewhat expanding, and I need a way and a place to host it somewhere. Can anyone recommend where such a place might be found? (few several beginner questions will follow now) Also, (at this point I might mention that I chose DokuWiki because of it "just works" attitude and because I didn't want to learn server adminstration and the like ...) I'm interested, how much are Wiki systems "compatible"? What I mean under compatible? As far as I understood DokuWiki saves data as text files. If I were to wish to convert it to some other Wiki system would it be possible? Or some other format more suitable for printing (at some point it will be necessary to convert a lot of documentation to a manual format for users). All advices and constructive approaches to this appreciated.

• Why i can not load a simple pixel shader effect (. fx) file in xna?

  I just want to load a simple *.fx file into my project to make a (pixel shader) effect. But whenever I try to compile my project, I get the following error in visual studio Error List: Errors compiling .. ID3DXEffectCompiler: There were no techniques ID3DXEffectCompiler: Compilation failed I already searched on google and found many people with the same problem. And I realized that it was a problem of encoding. With the return lines unrecognized '\ n' . I tried to copy and paste to notepad and save as with ASCII or UTF8 encoding. But the result is always the same. Do you have an idea please ?   Are there any canonical sources for learning how to structure multi-threaded programs? Even with all the concurrency utility classes that Java provides I'm having a hard time properly structuring multi-threaded programs. Whenever threads are involved my code becomes very brittle, any little change can potentially break the program because the code that jumps back and forth between the threads tends to be very convoluted.

• Problem with running php script using mysql on tomcat

  I am using tomcat 6 with JavaBridge. I have stored my php script in the following location. C:\Program Files\apache-tomcat-6.0.26\webapps\JavaBridge\project\test.php In test.php I am using curl and mysql. The php.ini in JavaBridge is stored in the following location C:\Program Files\apache-tomcat-6.0.26\webapps\JavaBridge\WEB-INF\cgi\php.ini and its contents are - extension_dir="C:\Program Files\apache-tomcat-6.0.26\webapps\JavaBridge\WEB-INF\cgi\x86-windows\ext" include_path="C:\Program Files\apache-tomcat-6.0.26\webapps\JavaBridge\WEB-INF\pear;." there is also a config file called mysql.ini whose contents are - extension = php_mysql.dll I had also installed wamp earlier so I copied all the dll's from C:\wamp\bin\php\php5.3.0\ext to C:\Program Files\apache-tomcat-6.0.26\webapps\JavaBridge\WEB-INF\cgi\x86-windows\ext When I start tomcat and run my script I get the following error - Fatal error: Call to undefined function mysqli_connect() in C:\Program Files\apache-tomcat-6.0.26\webapps\JavaBridge\project\test.php on line 534 Please help.
