• Need help choosing database server

  Good day everyone. Recently I was given a task to develop an application to automate some aspects of stocks trading. While working on initial architecture, the database dilemma emerged. What I need is a fast database engine which can process huge amounts of data coming in very fast. I'm fairly experienced in general programming, but I never faced a task of developing a high-load database architecture. I developed a simple MSSQL database schema with several many-to-many relationships during one of my projects, but that's it. What I'm looking for is some advice on choosing the most suitable database engine and some pointers to various manuals or books which describe high-load database development. Specifics of the project are as follows: OS: Windows NT family (Server 2008 / 7) Primary platform: .NET with C# Database structure: one table to hold primary items and two or three tables with foreign keys to the first table to hold additional information. Database SELECT requirements: Need super-fast selection by foreign keys and by combination of foreign key and one of the columns (presumably DATETIME) Database INSERT requirements: The faster the better :) If there'll be significant performance gain, some parts can be written in C++ with managed interfaces to the rest of the system. So once again: given all that stuff I just typed, please give me some advice on what the best database for my project is. Links or references to some manuals and books on the subject are also greatly appreciated. EDIT: I'll need to insert 3-5 rows in 2 tables approximately once in 30-50 milliseconds and I'll need to do SELECT with 0-2 WHERE clauses queries with similar rate.

• How do I select the last XHTML <span> element with a particular class in XPath?

  My target XHTML document (simplified) is like the following: <html> <head> </head> <body> <span class="boris"> </span> <span class="boris"> </span> <span class="johnson"> </span> </body> </html> I'm trying to select the last of class "boris." The XPath expression //span[@class="boris"] selects all spans of class boris. How do I select the last one of these? I've tried //span[@class="boris" and last()] which doesn't work because last() here refers to the last span in the WHOLE DOCUMENT. How do I select all the spans of class boris... and then the last one of these? I've read 5 or 6 XPath tutorials and done a lot of Googling and I can't find a way to do this in XPath alone :( Thanks in advance for help :)

My first try was to set various width with CSS classes (like above), but it didn't work -- list of choices became as wide as input box. According to Firebug width defined by my CSS class was overwritten by width set by element.style CSS class, which seems to be defined by Ajax.Autocompleter. My second try was to set width for list of choices after creating Ajax.Autocompleter $("isearch_choices").setStyle({width: "320px"}); but it didn't work too :(. No more ideas :(. How to set different width for list of choices for Scriptaculous Ajax.Autocompleter?

• 3 Servers, is this is a cluster?

  Hello, At the moment I have one Ubuntu server, 9.10, running with a simple Samba share, a mail server, DNS server and DHCP server. Mostly its just there for file sharing and email server. I also have 2 other servers that are exactly the same hardware and spec as the first, which have an rsync set up to retrieve the shared folders and backs them up. However, if the first server goes down, all of our shares disappear along with our mail and the system must be rebuilt. Also I tend to find if people are downloading a large amount from the file server, no-one can access there emails - especially in the morning when everyone is signing in at once. Would it be more beneficial for me to have all 3 servers, all running the same services, doing the same thing with some sort of cluster with load balancing? I'm not really sure where to begin looking, or how to go about such a setup where 3 servers are all identical, but perhaps one acts as the main load balancer?? If someone can point me in the right direction, or if this simply sounds like one of those Enterprise Cloud's that is now a default setup in Ubuntu Server 9.10+, then I'll go down that route. • Creating and publishing exel file in MOSS 2007 using data from SQL sever.

  Hello, I need help in this matter: We have a template of exel file in which all calculations are already set. User can request a 'report'. Idea is to create a button on our site (SharePoint portal). After clicking on it a new exel file is generated. This means to get actual data from database (SQL server 2005 SP2), import them into template, let all calculations to generate proper data and then allow user to see this file. For now it's enough to publish final exel file in document library. I am quite new in WSS 3.0 and MOSS 2007 and I need some advice in what can be the best solution. Looks like a quite complex task for me. Is there some direct way how to accomplish this? Or maybe I need one tool to get data from database and to import this data into exel file (SSRS?) and other tool to publish it in document library (MOSS7 Exel services?). I heard something about PerformancePoint Server 2007, is this a way to follow? Thanks forward for any advice!

• IValidator.Validate method and adding error message to a custom type

  I have several server controls that implement the IValidator interface. As such, they have their own Validate() methods that look like this. public void Validate() { this.IsValid = true; if (someConditionFails()) { ErrorMessage = "Condition failed!"; this.IsValid = false; } } I understand that these Validate() methods are executed on postback before the load completed event that is executed before the save button's event handler. What I would like to do is pass in a reference to an instance of a custom class that collects all the error messages that I can access from Save button event handler. In other words, I would like to do something like this: public void Validate(ref SummaryOfErrorMessages sum) I guess I can't do this as the signature is different from what the IValidator interface has. The other option I can think of is on Load Completed event, I would iterate through all the validators on page, get the ones with IsValid = false and create my SummaryOfErrorMessages there. Does this sound right? Is there a better way of doing it?

I have set idletime for 30 min as below in my Master Page. So that After the user session is timedout of 30 Min, an Auto Logout dialog shows for couple of seconds and says that "You are about to be signed out due to Inactivity" Now after this once the user is logged out and redirected to Home Page. Here i again want to show a Dialog and should stay there saying "You are Logged out" until the user clicks on it. • Why do people have to use multiple versions of jQuery on the same page?

  I have noticed that sometimes people have to use multiple versions of jQuery in the same page (See question 1 and question 2). I assume people have to carry old versions of jQuery because some pieces of their code is based on an older version of jQuery. Obviously, this approach causes inefficiency. The ideal solution is to refactor the old code to use the newer jQuery API. I wonder if there are tools that automate the process of upgrading a piece of code to use a newer version of jQuery. I've never written programs in in either Javascript or jQuery. So, I'd like to hear from programmers experienced in these language about their opinion on this issue. In particular, I'd like to know the following. How much of problem it is to have to load multiple versions of jQuery? Have you ever had to load multiple versions of any other library in the same page? Do you know of any refactoring tools that helps you migrate your code to use the updated API? Do you think such a refactoring tool is useful? Are you willing to use it?

• jQuery scrollTo plugin to scroll screen to div wouldn't work, why?

  Hi all: I am working on a web application, whose mock-up page can now be found at: our server If you click on the blue title "step1" and then choose the option of "delivery to address", a form will show up using jQuery ajax load. No problem for this. Click on the "venue" radio button will take you to another form, no problem for this as well. If you scroll down a bit, you can see a textarea, top of that you can see a link called "what's this?". Click on it and the textarea shall be filled with sample words. The problem is, after clicking on the link, the webpage automatically scrolls to the top section. What I want is to keep the textarea to the center of screen after link is clicked. I am trying to use a jQuery plugin called "scrollTo", which can be found here From its demo page I can tell is what I want. • Which PHP library I should choose to work with CouchDB?

  I want to try playing with CouchDB for a new project I'm writing (as a hobby, not part of my job). I'm well versed in PHP, but I haven't programmed with CouchDB at all, and also I have little experience with non-SQL databases. From looking at CouchDB's "Getting Started with PHP" document they recommend using a third-party library or writing your own client using their RESTful HTTP API. I think I'd rather not mess with writing protocol implementations myself at this point, but what is your experience with writing PHP to work with CouchDB? I haven't tested any of the alternatives yet, but I looked at: PHPillow : I'm interested in the way they implement ORM. I wasn't planning to do ORM, but my problem domain probably map well to that method. PHP Object Freezer: seems like a poor man's ORM - I can use it to implement an actual ORM, or just as an easy store/retrieve document API but it seems too primitive. PHP-on-Couch : Also a bit simple, but they have an interesting API for views and from the documentation it looks usable enough. PHP CouchDB Extension : From the listed options this looks like it has the best chance of making it into the PHP mainline itself, and also has the most complete API. Any opinion one wish to share on each library is welcome.

• DOJO : How do you reinitiate form elements after ajax call ?

  I'm trying to do a couple of things using Zend Framework & Dojo Toolkit, and any help would be appreciated. Here's the problem: I have a form that is rendered with the Zend Framework form class, which has an ajax radio button selection. Clicking one of these radio buttons will send an ajax request to another controller, which has no layout, just a rendered form. The ajax request will then populate a div with the new form options. Problem is, when I replace the innerHTML of the div with the ajax response, all the form inputs and elements are not inheriting the same Dojo styling and form validation. I was wondering if there is a way to reinitate form elements after an ajax call? I have tried to use the code attached which I found and modified slightly for this example, however it did not work. If I use the line dojo.parser.parse( div ); nothing changes (rg_adress in the example is the ID of a form element that is placed on the DOM).   Hey, so I'm having a bunch of trouble getting ExternalInterface to work, which is odd, because I use it somewhat often. I'm hoping it's something I just missed because I've been looking at it too long. The flash_ready function is correctly returning the objectID, and as far as I can tell, everything else is in order. Unfortunately, when I run it, I get an error (varying by browser) telling me that basically document.getElementById(<movename>).test() is not a valid method. • How to change the margin of code's frame of showexpl.sty when numbers=none?

  Hi all, I want to align the code's frame with the formated text's frame. If the numbers=left,the mission is accomplished by configuring xleftmargin, xrightmargin, framesep, and numbersep. However, when I set numbers=none, I cannot accomplish my mission by configuring those properties. Regardless of the values set to those properties, the code's frame remains unchanged and expands beyond the \textwidth. Please see my code snippet below. • asp.net, how to change text color to red in child nodes in VB codes?

  I got everything worked now by list of server Name but I want to add a IF statement by checking a column from SQL Server called Compliance by either True or False value listed. If it False, the Name will change text color to Red. If it True, the Name won't change text color. I am not sure how add that in VB codes side. I am pretty sure that I would need to put IF statement inside While dr.Read(). I am pretty new to VB.Net and not sure which VB code that change text color. • Submit WordPress form password programmatically

  How can I let a user access a WordPress protected page with a URL that will submit the password in the form below? I want to be able to let a user get to a password protected WordPress page without needing to type the password, so when they go to the page, the password is submitted by a POST URL on page load. This not intended to be secure in any respect; I'll need to hardcode the password in the URL and the PHP. It's just for simplicity for the user, and once they're in, the cookie will let them in for 10 more days. I will select the particular user with separate PHP function that determines their IP or WordPress login status. I used Wireshark to find the POST string: post_password=mypassword&Submit=Submit but using this URL mydomain.com/wp-pass.php?post_password=mypassword&Submit=Submit gives me a blank page. • scaling svg paths in Raphael 2.1

  I'm using SVG paths from a wikimedia commons map of the US. I've singled out Pennsylvania with its counties. I'm feeding the paths out of a database and using Raphael 2.1 to put them on the page. Because in the original map, Pennsylvania was so small and set at an angle, I'd like to scale up the paths and rotate Pa. so that it isn't on an angle. When I try to use Raphael's transform method, all the counties look strange and overlapped. I gave up on setting the viewBox when I heard that it doesn't work in all browsers. Anyone have any ideas?   Hi guys. I'm using an actionsciprt only project (under FlashDevelop) to load an .swf flex file built by another department of the company I work for.   Requirement is to create a reusable multi-select combobox custom control. To accomplish this, I am creating the DataTemplate dynamically through code and set the combobox ItemTemplate. I am able to load the datatemplate dynamically and set the ItemTemplate, but getting unhandled exception (code: 7054) when we select the combobox.
