• Error creating ODBC connection to SQL Server 2008 Express

  When creating a System DSN, I get the error: Connection failed: SQLState: '08001' SQL Server Error: 2 [Microsoft][SQL Server Native Client 10.0]Named Pipes Provider: Could not open a connection to SQL Server [2]. Connection failed: SQLState: 'HYT00' SQL Server Error: 0 [Microsoft][SQL Server Native Client 10.0]Login timeout expired I'm running Vista Home Premium 64-bit SP2, and installed SQL Server 2008 Express Advanced without errors. I'll be using the database locally for an app installed on the same PC. I'm able to successfully connect with SQL Server Management Studio using Windows Authentication (my Windows account is a member of local Administrators), and I can successfully create a database with default ownership (defaults to my Windows account). SQL Server Configuration Manager shows that Shared Memory, TCP/IP, and Named Pipes are enabled for SQL Native Client 10.0 Configuration, SQL Native Client 10.0 Configuration (32bit), and SQL Server Network Configuration (SQLEXPRESS). The SQL Server (SQLEXPRESS) and SQL Server Reporting Services (SQLEXPRESS) services are running. When I create a system DSN, my driver choices are SQL server (sqlsrv32.dll 4-10-09), which gives a generic wizard, and SQL Server Native Client 10.0 (sqlncli10.dll 7-10-08), which gives the SQL Server 2008 wizard. I choose the latter. I enter name, description, and have tried both MyPCName and 127.0.0.1 for the server name (browsing turns up nothing). After clicking Next, I leave it at Integrated Windows authentication, and leave Connect to server for additional options checked. After clicking Next, I get the error above. I know it's probably a simple answer, (permission issue?) and I'm a SQL noob, so I appreciate anything that would point me in the right direction. Thanks!

• Shrink a Volume Group in LVM / Linux in order to install Windows on the freed space

  I have a Volume Group with Unused space. This 40Gig should become an entidy in order to install Microsoft windows 7 on it. I do not have extra space on the drive - that is why I want to shrink the VG! LVG berta resides on sda2 and consists of lv_root lv_swap unused_space I want it to become lv_root lv_swap and have a seperate entidy made out of unused_space. Microsoft Windows 7 has to get installed on this entidy. I do not understand why Linux made simple things complicated. I utterly hate LVM and think its absolute bollocks. In my opinion it is best to avoiding LVM until pvresize matures as promised in its man pages. • Broken filesystem on Windows XP / 7 virtual machine

  I created a virtual machine with Windows XP as the guest system in Microsoft's Virtual PC that ships along with Windows 7. I then installed Virtualbox and began running the MS machine in it. It worked fine. Then, I accidentally started the machine in Microsoft's Virtual PC again. The screen stayed blank, so after a while, realizing my mistake, I closed the Machine. Since then, the VM won't start any more, claiming massive file system problems. Starting Windows in normal mode results in a SOMETHING_FILESYSTEM blue screen; I can start in protected mode and run a checkdisk. That will fix something on every run, but every time I restart, it will start again. I tried re-booting the VM with the Windows CD and doing a repair install. I didn't watch whether that worked out, but I'm caught in the reset / check disk / reset cycle again. Is there anything VM specific that can still be done? On a physical machine, I would say reformat. Is there any way to get hold of the data on the virtual machine through either Virtual PC or Virtualbox? It was an experimental machine, but I had started entering some data on it that would be nice to recover.

• Ping server NETBIOS name returns wrong IP and "Destination host unreachable"

  Problem server is Windows 2008 R2 VM running on VMWare ESXi 4 host. Single network adapter manually assigned single IP address (192.168.1.11). When I ping the server from any other network computer, it returns 192.168.1.124 and "Destination host unreachable". Yesterday I found a second network adapter assigned to this server with an IP of 169.254... indicating it had no real valid IP. Using the MAC addresses I determined which adapter was not needed/not wanted, and removed it using VMWare systems. This is the network Printer Server and, understandably, nothing is printing right now. I've looked at the solutions here Why was my ping answered by a different IP address than the one pinged? and they aren't applicable to my situation for the following reasons: Output of arp -a on another computer returns the correct IP address (.1.11) assigned to the correct MAC address, the incorrect IP .1.124 is not listed, and the MAC of the network adapter I removed yesterday is not listed at all. I checked out the Microsoft KB article which listed pretty much my exact symptoms ( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/981953 ) and it says to check binding orders and look for hidden adapters. But there are no hidden adapters, and there is only one Network Adapter listed in the Binding Order list. Essentially, I can communicate from the server TO any other network device, but I cannot communicate from any other network device TO the server. Help!   one of our customers uses SAP through VMWare ThinApp. In SAP there is a button that launches an .Net application from a server. When starting the .Net-application directly, there is no error. If the user tries to start the application by clicking the button in the ThinApp-Application, it displays the following errors: Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library R6034 An application has made an attempt to load the C runtime library incorrectly. Please contact the application's support team for more information. After clicking "OK" it displays: Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library Runtime Error! R6030 - CRT not initialized So, does the customer have to install some components into his ThinApp (if yes, which?) to get things working? Regards, inno ----- [EDIT] ----- @Sean: It's installed the following way: The .exe of the .Net-Application is on a mapped drive on a server. All clients have the requirements installed (.Net-framework for example) and start the .exe from the mapped drive. The ThinApp-Application tries to start this application and throws the mentioned exceptions. AFAIK there are no entry points for this application configured. What I should also mention is: The .Net-Application crashes during execution. That means, we have a debug mode implemented that shows what the application is doing. The application shows what it's doing and after some steps it crashes. The interesting point is: It's a .Net-application, not a C++ Application.

• SQL Full-Text indexing not populating

  We installed a clustered SQL 2005 installation on windows 2008 and reattached our san drives from another machine and restored to do a migration to new hardware. There have been a few minor issues, but this one has me stuck. Trying to populate Full-Text indexes is not working. Application throws this error: “PHP Warning: mssql_query() [function.mssql-query]: message: Full-text catalog 'ikm_PageIndex_FText' is in an unusable state. Drop and re-create this full-text catalog. (severity 16) in E:\Inetpub\knowledgebase_insidemesa\lib\database\mssql.php on line 154” A microsoft discussion is the only post I found which had claimed to fix this - said it was registry related, but then didn't post the fix.

• Event Log "Wake Source" when system wakes from sleep

  So I've been troubleshooting sleep timers for our systems and have run across an interesting issue. I need a way to report how long a system was awake after a number of different inputs. Now, I've discovered that the System Log tracks wake and sleep events and even tells you the times that everything happens at. The thing is doesn't tell you is what triggered the wake event. It does give you a numerical code however. Here are some examples of what I am finding. Index : 2901 EntryType : Information InstanceId : 1 Message : The system has resumed from sleep. • How to add a privilege to an account in Windows?

  Given: A VM running Windows 2008 I am logged on there using my domain account (SHUNRANET\markk) I have added the "Create global objects" privilege to my domain account: The VM is restarted (I know logout/logon is enough, but I had to restart) I logon again using the same domain account. It seems still to have the privilege: I run some process and examine its Security properties using the Process Explorer. The account does not seem to have the privilege: This is not an idle curiousity. I have a real problem, that without this privilege the named pipe WCF binding works neither on Windows 2008 nor on Windows 7! • Cross OS data recover question, USB drive involved.

  Here's the story: A MacBook had OS X 10.4 and Windows XP dual booting using rEFIt. Then the Windows partition gets corrupted and it won't boot. Presumably a virus. There were sensitive files there and those were successfully copied to a USB drive and then 10.5 was installed on the hard drive, formatting the drive in the process. The USB drive's contacts cracked and he data is lost from there, unless it can be resoldered. The issues is that there is too much solder there already. So, how can the data in question be recovered? The files were Microsoft Money (not the latest version) files for the Windows version of the program. Right now, only OS X is installed on the MacBook. Is there Mac based program that can recover the Windows data or am I better off trying to resolder the drive? Does anyone know how to best resolder a USB drive more than once, where the first solder is ther, but detached from the silicon? Also, what format (extension) are Microsoft Money files? In need of help!

• XP Pro freezes on welcome screen

  I have a problem that sounds much the same as http://superuser.com/questions/83101/how-to-diagnose-a-freeze-on-startup-in-windows-xp About every 2nd or 3rd boot, XP-Pro freezes on the Welcome page (the one showing the user name icons). The mouse moves the cursor OK, but clicking on an icon does nothing, and neither does any keystroke. If you press too many keys there is a beep and after that the mouse won't move the cursor anymore. The work-around is always to reboot into Safe mode and request a CHKDSK /R After this, the next boot is fine. There are no related entries in the Event log when the problem occurs. The only two entries are: "Microsoft (R) Windows (R) 5.01. 2600 Service Pack 3 Multiprocessor Free." "The Event log service was started." Update 1: Many thanks for that but I found no problems with any diagnostics I have run. But, I have managed to locate, and code round, the source of the problem - which is with whatever processing goes on behind the XP Welcome (as opposed to "classic") login screen. Unfortunately, having classic login means you don't get the useful Fast User Switching (FUS) login/switch mode. So, to retain this, my fix is: Add a Windows shutdown script (using gpedit.msc) to force "classic" mode for the first logon after next XP startup, by running: reg add "hklm\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon" /v LogonType /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f Add a Scheduled Task to run at User Logon that enables Welcome screen (and hence FUS) by running the same command with 1 instead of 0 after the /d flag. The task is run as a privileged user (who can run "reg add").

• How to install IE9 when KB2120976 is not applicable to my Windows 7 x86 Ultimate edition?

  I'm trying to install IE9, visit http://beautyoftheweb.com, download it and then says it's downloading prereqs. After a minute, the installer says there's a problem and directs me to Prerequisites for installing Internet Explorer 9 Beta I click on the x86 installers one by one... most say "already installed".. But http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2120976/ says "The update is not applicable to your computer". Lame. So I try the IE9 install and the go through the whole process again with the same result. I discovered there's an IE9 install log at C:\Windows\IE9_main.log which logs the install process and reports an Error for 2120976 00:06.630: ERROR: Error installing prerequisite file (C:\Users\Vijay\AppData\Local\Temp\IE98036.tmp\KB2120976_x86.msu): 0x80240017 (2149842967) 00:06.677: INFO: PauseOrResumeAUThread: Successfully resumed Automatic Updates. 00:12.090: INFO: Link clicked, opening URL in new window:'http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=185111' 00:12.106: INFO: Setup exit code: 0x00009C47 (40007) - Required updates are missing from the system.are missing from the system. I want to make web application and this web application will authenticate users from Active Directory, the web application should be published on the server IIS and the users should access it remotely from their home using domain name of my machine, Someone tell me that its very wrong to have IIS and Active directory on the same machine I got the following Answer You can't use ActiveDirectory over the internet. At least not without something like a VPN as a middle man. Their home computers will not be joined to the domain, so there is no pass-through authentication. Yes, it's a bad idea to put AD on the web server. Why is too complex to get into in an answer here. Suffice it to say that even if you did do this, it's probably would not work the way you are thinking it should. It's not impossible to do this. For instance, many of the Microsoft "Small Businesss" products put IIS, AD, and SQL Server on the same server. But, you kind of have to know what you're doing to configure it securely. Then I add the following comment Thanks for ur reply.so what you think about the best way to do this as I didn't do anything like that before should I install active directory on a machine and IIS on another machine ? and what about SQL should I add it to the same server of active directory ? I didn't mentioned also that it will be Microsoft dynamics server that will access some information about work and i have to read data from axapta also ? also what is VPN and how can I use it to let users access my web application anywhere ? I get another event telling me that there is a report here: *C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\WER\ReportQueue\AppCrash_w3wp.exe_cdb8af6deb381574fe9fb0dc9aa3edaad59acd5f_cab_4fbf9b53* It contains the following files: WERD931.tmp.appcompat.txt WERDFE9.tmp.WERInternalMetadata.xml WER99EF.tmp.WERDataCollectionFailure.txt The "depressing one" is the WERDataCollectionFailure that says: Heap dump generation failed: 0x8007012b Mini dump generation failed: 0x8007001f After many tries, lots of msdn documentation and many failed google search. I have uninstalled javascript and reinstalled but still the same. I am using chrome. • "Delivered-To" Header in Exchange

  In some SMTP server implementations (i.e. Postfix) you can enable Delivered-To and X-Original-To headers that will be added to your email. (or [X-]Envelope-To) This is very helpful with distribution lists to determine which e-mail address the mail has been redirected to. So, when the mail has been sent to [email protected], you can see in the Delivered-To or Envelope-To header that it has been redirected (distributed) to [email protected], which is one of many other e-mail addresses that are linked to a single mailbox. How do I find which address was used to deliver this mail to a specific mailbox on Microsoft Exchange 2010? Looking at the plain message (with all headers) i can not find any information that the mail arrived via address [email protected] I think I need the Delivered-To header (or a similar one) to be set on Microsoft Exchange when a mail is delivered via distribution lists. Is there any way to enable such header in Exchange 2010? I need it so that our Ticket system (OTRS) correctly recognizes where the ticket belongs to. Adding all the e-mail addresses of all distribution lists to the system configuration is not the right solution. And if there is a solution for Exchange 2010, is this possibly also applicable to Exchange 2007?

• How should I configure my Active Directory servers so that if one goes down, users are not kicked off SQL?

  Today, we shut down one of our Active Directory servers during office hours to check the loading on a UPS. Since all the server did was provide Active Directory in a separate building incase the main building caught fire, or whatever, we didn't think it would have any effect on our users. Seconds after the server was shut down, we had a dozen phone calls from users experiencing this issue:- [Microsoft SQL Server Login] SQLState: '28000' [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Login failed. The login is from an untrusted domain and cannot be used with authentication. Once we realized what had happened, we quickly rebooted the down Active Directory server. Problem solved. But why did this happen. And what if one day a server has a breakdown and is offline for hours, or days? Shouldn't the other Active Directory servers in the domain service authentication requests without disruption to users? We have 3 Windows Server 2003 Standard servers running Active Directory as Domain Controllers with Global Catalogs, all physically located on the same network at Gigabit speeds. I believe the domain was originally Windows Server 2000, or maybe even NT 4.0. Could the issue be to down to old Group Policies inherited from these old server OS's, or some default setting in Active Directory that needs changing?

• Exchange backup verification shows no files

  [SBS2003SP2] If i read the exhange log it shows the backup contains no files just folders and the total size seems to be Ok. I i try to restore the folders are empty... But the 14 files that where backupped dissapeared in the verification log?! Other backups on the same medium turned out to be fine. Any idea what's wrong here? • Failing Windows Updates with Error Code 800719e4

  On a number of Vista machines I have now come across the same error - when installing updates everything works fine, until it after it reboots and the rolls back during step 3. On all occasions (where a simple retry hasn't worked) the error code has been 800719e4. On my own laptop I have so far tried the following:- Installed the updates one by one manually - I started on the smallest and one by one have worked towards the largest one which has left me with "Security Update for Windows (KB2286198)" that refuses to install. Renamed all the files in "C:\Windows\Logs\CBS" to "xxx.old" where xxx was the original name with windows update turned off - no change Renamed all the folders in "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution" in the same manner - no change Attempted to install it manually "Windows6.0-KB2286198-x86.msu" - no change Tried to un-install IE8 - doesn't work, rolls back at the end (Installing the IE9 Beta when it launched was what alerted me to the issue on this laptop) Ran a "Fix It" thing from the Microsoft Website - no help (Can't find the link now). Tried to recover from the disk - but alas my laptop only has a recovery partition (and was unservice packed original). Ran with nothing running on startup, and only MS services - again no change. Google is being useless with a load of posts trying to get me to call a telephone number with letters in (presumably an American number) The error code appears to mean error log full but no one has any idea which log! • DNS Replication on Server 2008 R2

  Hi There, I have been trying out public only facing DNS servers with Server 2008 R2 Web - I've wanted to setup at least 2 in a master/slave replication. Using Microsoft DNS I am able to add in the domains into the primary zone on the master DNS server (ns1) and add the records ok and have them visible publically. On ns2 I can then add in the same domain but as a secondary zone and get them to replicate / zone transfer fine. Is there a way inside of Windows to have the slave(s) automatically synchronise all the changes from the master? For example it's ok if i have manually added the domains onto each of the NS's but if i add a new zone on the master i have to add it on the slave before it replicates. I installed Simple DNS and they have a 'Super Master/Slave' which takes care of exactly this whereby if you add a new domain into the primary zone it is automatically created and kept in sync on NS2 but i would have to buy a licence. All this is non active directory if that helps. Can anyone advise if it is possible to do this using Microsoft DNS? Many Thanks in Advance!

• Local references to old server name remain after Windows 2003 server rename

  I have a standalone Win 2003 server with Windows Sharepoint Services (WSS3) running on it. I had to rename the server and I had bunch of problems resulting from this. Note that the server is not in AD environment. Most obvious problems were with Sharepoint, which didn't work. I was somewhat naive to think it will work in the first place, but OK - I've solved this using step 1 & 3 from this site (TNX) Other curious behavior/problems remain. Most disturbing is that Sharepoint isn't able to send email notifications to participants. I noticed there are several references to old server name everywhere I look: in Registry, in Windows Internal Database (MICROSOFT##SSEE). I see instances of old server name in the Sharepoint Central Administration - Operations - Servers in farm. There is reference to a servers: oldname.domain.local oldname.local On one of those servers there is also Windows SharePoint Services Outgoing E-Mail Service (Stopped). Also, when I try to telnet locally to the mail server (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) service), I get a response: 220 oldname.domain.local Microsoft ESMTP MAIL Service, Version: 6.0.3790.4675 ready at Tue, 15 Jun 2010 13:56:19 +0200 IMO these strange naming problems are also the reason why email notifications from within Sharepoint don't work. Can anyone tell me how to correct/replace those references to oldservername? Why is the email service insisting on old name? Of course I would like to try it without reinstalling the server. TNX!

• Command line scripts to restore the 4 system databases of MS SQL Server 2008

  Hi there, can someone give me some advice on how to restore the 4 system databases (master, msdb, model, tempdb) of a sql server 2008 please? I've already done some testing myself (on restoring the master database) with the following commad line script as a result: ::set variables set dbname=master set dbdirectory=C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\DATA title Restoring %dbname% database net stop mssqlserver cd C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\Binn sqlservr -m sqlcmd -Slocalhost -E -Q "restore database master from disk='c:\master.bak' WITH REPLACE" net start mssqlserver pause After the execution of the 'sqlservr -m' command (used to start the server instance in single-user mode, which is only necessary when restoring the MASTER database), the script stops. So in order to execute the last 2 commands I need to separate the script into 2 smaller scripts, and run them one after the other. Does anyone has an idea on how I can merge them into one single script that runs completely without any interruption? I also want to restore the other 3 system databases using command line scripts like this one. Can someone please advice me how I need to go on? I've already noticed that restoring the temdb is not so easy, but there has to be a way... Looking forward to your advice!

• set service dependency on internet connection

  Hi, I have created a window service and set some dependencies like on MSMQ, MSSQLSERVER and so. Everything is working nice. but i need to send another dependency for my service. That is on internet connection. My service is responsible for sending emails. As soon my server starts, my service starts too and it finds if there is anything to send, if there is, it starts to send email, if during sending it is not able to connect to the internet it cannot send email. so i guess i should set my service dependency on internet connection too. I already set my window service dependency to MicrosoftSQL Server and Microsoft Message Queuing by editing the registry value. by adding new multi string value named "DependOnService", Type "REG_MULTI_SZ" and space separated names of the services that my service depends upon for the Data. For Microsoft SQL Server i set the value to "MSSQLSERVER" but i don't know the name of the internet service that i need to set dependency upon. how can i do this, any help please Thanks

• Moving the Windows 7 Pro OEM image to computer with the same hardware

  We bought 8 clean computers (even without HDD) with the same hardware and bought eight Windows 7 Pro OEM disks. Now I prepare one Win7 installation without activation but with all required programs, settings, etc. Then I'm going to clone the image to other computers even without sysprepping. I'm going to change the product key to legal number at COA sticker on each computer and make the activation through the Internet. Will this scenario work? I know that OEM's license agreement forbids the image cloning and the actions I'm going to do breaks the agreement. According the license agreement I should make the manual clean install of Win7 on each computer. But how Microsoft and other viewers can determine the cloning fact? All computers are the same and license Win7 DVDs are also the same. However in my case the installation time also will the same (and may be kind of installation code or something else) and this is not good. Will the Win7 activation work? Can I be sure that activation will not damage after some time? Can Microsoft determine the cloning fact during the activation process? Thank you.
