• memory and time intensive php task

  Sorry if this question has been asked before, but I couldn't find anything usable. I'm working on a project for a client and currently I have to loop through the users table which is about 3000 records and still growing. I have to do some calculations on a nightly basis which I am going to be using cron/php. The calculations script uses about 3.5mb of memory and takes about 1 second to run. When loading individual users my current php setup handles this fine, but if I try and loop through the user list my php script execution time runs out. I've read after doing some searching that I can make the page reload itself after each user calculation and just keep my previous place in the loop and this sounds like a good idea, but I wanted to hear some opinions from others that have handled similar situations and how you handled these types of tasks. • How to support tableless columns with WYSIWYG editor?

  On the front page of a site I'm working on there's a small slideshow. It's not for pictures in particular, any content can go in, and I'm currently setting up the editing interface for the client. I'd like to be able to have one/two/more columns in the editable area, and ideally that would be via CSS - does anyone know of a WYSIWYG editor that supports this? I'm using Drupal (would prefer not to involve Panels as it would require a bit of work to make it a streamlined workflow for content entry) in case that matters to anyone. To start the ball rolling, one way would be to use templates. I know CKEditor supports templates, and it looks like TinyMCE might have something similar. I don't know how well these work with tableless columns (the CKEditor homepage demo uses tables to achieve its two column effect). Holding out for a cool solution!

• How can I fix latency problems for car game?

  Basically I'm trying to make a online car racing game for IOS using Game Center real time multiplayer. I have setup a timer that sends data every 0.02 seconds to the other player with the current position and current angle. However sometimes, it will take LONGER then these 0.02 seconds for the package to be sent and then received. In this case i have implemented a method that "calculate" what the next position should be if no position is received based on the last position and angle. However, when the data then receives for let say 0.04 seconds after, it will change back to the last position, which will result in the car "jumping" back and lag. And If i just keep ignoring the data it will never take any input from the other user. Is their any way to prevent this? I suppose this needs to be fixed with some client-sided algorithm.

• Is Azure Compatible with JPEG XR?

  I just put an F#/MVC app into a Windows Azure solution as a Web Role. Before migration, my JPEG XR (*.WDP) files were getting displayed on the client in IE9 without issue via my local and hosted sites. Now, after migration into Windows Azure, my JPEG XR files neither get displayed in my local Windows Azure compute emulator nor do they get displayed when they are deployed to http://*.cloudapp.net. Is there some sort of conflict with Widows Azure and (JPEG XR) *.wdp files? If so, what is the accepted best practice for overcoming this conflict?

The testpage.aspx URL changes depending on what I have sent to it. Now in my mainpage.cs file I would like to call certain functions depending on what was passed, but I am unsure how to manipulate or even access the URL. • Looking for the better way to combine deep architecture refactoring with feature based development

  Problem statement: Given: TFS as Source Control Heavy desktop client application with tons of legacy code with bad or almost absent architecture design. Clients constantly requiring new features with sound quality, fast delivery and constantly complaining on user unfriendly UI. Problem: Application undoubtedly requires deep refactoring. This process inevitably makes application unstable and dedicated stabilization phase is needed. We've tried: Refactoring in master with periodical merges from master (MB) to feature branch (FB). (my mistake) Result: Many unstable branches. What we are advised: Create additional branch for refactoring (RB) periodically synchronizing it with MB via merge from MB to RB. After RB is stabilized we substitute master with RB and create new branch for further refactoring. This is the plan. But here I expect the real hell of merging MB to RB after merging any FB to MB. The main advantage: Stable master most of the time. Are there any better alternatives to the procees?

  We have a CUPS server 1.3 and my freshly installed Ubuntu 13.04 PC has CUPS client 1.6.2. They are incompatible. On the CUPS web server I saw that CUPS 1.6.3 has fixed the issue. "CUPS 1.6.3 fixes some compatibility issues with servers running CUPS 1.3.12 or older..." So I would like to replace CUPS 1.6.2 with 1.6.3 on my Ubuntu 13.04 PC. I guess Ubuntu 13.10 will have CUPS 1.6.3 and later I would like to upgrade from 13.04 to 13.10. I would thus prefer avoiding installing CUPS 1.6.3 manually to avoid any troubles. Is there a way to install CUPS version 1.6.3 using a ppa or something like that ?

  When is it best to use Iterators in PHP, and how can they be implemented to best avoid loading all objects into memory simultaneously? Do any constructs exist in PHP so that we can queue up results of an operation for use with an Iterator, while again avoiding loading all objects into memory simultaneously? An example would be a curl HTTP request against a REST server In the case of an HTTP request that returns all results at once (a la curl), would we be better off to go with streaming results, and if so, are there any limitations or pitfalls to be aware of? If using streaming, is it better to replace curl with a PHP native stream/socket? My intention is to implement Iterators for a REST client, and separately a document ORM that I'm maintaining, but only if I can do so while gaining benefits from reduced memory usage, increased performance, etc. Thanks in advance for any responses :-)

  I'm currently working on a PHP project and quickly realizing how useful a templating engine would help me. I have a few tables whose table rows are looped out via a PHP loop. Is it possible to use just a JS templating engine (like Handlebarsjs) to also work with these tables?   I have a client who currently runs a venue and has ticket purchases made available through a third party. The way the site currently works is that there is a standard href in the nav menu to the ticket purchasing site. <a href'http://example.com/events'>Events</a> <a href'http://example.com/about'>About</a> <a href'https://someticketvendor.com/myclient?blah'>Tickets</a> They claim that they want to improve their SEO by appearing to integrate the ticket pages into their site. Having spoken to the ticket vendor, they only offer integration through iframes which is just horrible. I don't really know much about SEO but I'm wondering if I can create an htaccess rule to have http://example.com/tickets forward to href'https://someticketvendor.com/myclient?blah Are they are any negative SEO implications to doing this? Is there a better way this could be done?

  I have a client who wants a tool for him to be able to upload his products, enter orders, and keep track of customer details. There are quite a few highly customised requests, which is why he wants the tool custum made. He does not care much about the interface design - it just has to be usable and provide access to the databade. I've already designed the database. I have no experience of desktop applications and usually write my web apps in PHP with the Yii framework. But hosting this on a server seems like overkill. I also have .net experience from a few years ago. What would be the best options for writing this as a desktop application?

• Meta Refresh for change of page name and content

  Hopefully just a quick one. I've got a client that is changing the name of a workshop that they run. This means a change of url, page title for keywords that they have first page ranking on. The keywords are still relevant so what I want to avoid is a 301 redirect to a page that has different keywords to the previous page. Is the best option to keep the old page live with url and title and use a meta refresh to redirect after a period of time (not instant)? That way the SEO ranking is retained for the previous workshop name while they work on the ranking for the name change? Would a 301 redirect have an inverse effect? Thanks!

• How should I handle search engines auto-correcting the spelling of a site's name?

  A client's site and company is called 'Tranin Communications' (Tranin is her last name). It ranks well in searches for her name but rather poorly in searches for the name of her site/company. I realized that this is largely due to* search engines (Google especially) assuming that the query was misspelled and automatically including results for both 'train communications' and 'communications training'. Both of those queries yield many high-ranking sites that completely drown out hers. Sometimes Google even shows results for 'communications training' instead of 'tranin communications', hiding her site altogether. Is there a way to report an incorrect auto-correction to Google or something I can do to discourage this behavior (e.g. a meta tag)? My searches have come up cold, any suggestions would be appreciated. *I've come to this conclusion because her site ranks very highly when the same queries are put in quotes.

• Disabled WiFi but it keeps re-enabling itself; want it to stay disabled

  I have an Alienware X51 desktop with a wireless card, I have it connected via ethernet and want to permanently disable WiFi from ever using itself. When running Windows, I go to device manager and rightclick-disable the Wireless card and that takes care of my problem. Is there a similar method using Ubuntu 14.04? For now, I click on the network icon in the system tray and uncheck 'Enable wifi' but it seems to turn itself back on as I use my computer, I think I have the incident isolated to something with Steam. It seems like after I start the Steam client it always is re-enabled. Hopeful answer: Just disable/remove/block wireless card from ever working.

• Do I need to notify a user if I am using statistics software in an iPhone app?

  Hello, I am currently creating a (very simple) Objective-C client to send basic statistical data to my server for an iPhone app - just things like the state of the app (first-launch or launch, error, etc), along with the make/model/version (i.e.: "iPod touch 4.2"). No personally identifiable information or location data is sent. Is there anything, in the Apple Developer agreement or otherwise, that states that I must notify the user if I am doing this? I'm not interested in selling the data or anything, I just want to use the data to make my apps better. I am not adverse to telling the user I am doing this if it is required, I just don't want to scare the users (the paranoid "oooh, they're tracking me, they know exactly where I am" crowd) if I don't have to.   My question is what is the subject area that covers web page execution/loading. I am looking to purchase a book by subject area that covers when things execute or load in a web page, whether it's straight html, html and Javascript, or a PHP page. Is that topic covered by a detailed html book, or should I expect to find information like that in a JavaScript of PHP book? I understand that PHP and Perl execute on the server and that Javascript is client side, and I know there is a lot of on-line documentation describing <html>, <head>, <body>, and so on. I'm just wondering what subject area a book would be in to cover all that, not a discussion of the best book or someone's favorite book, but the subject area.

• How can IIS 7.5 have the error pages for a site reset to the default configuration?

  A mishap occurred with web.config to accommodate a subsite existing. I made use of “<location path="." inheritInChildApplications="false">”. Essentially it was a workaround put in place for nested web.config files which was causing a conflict. The result was that error pages were not being handled properly. Error 500 was being passed to the client for every type of error encountered. Removal of the offending inheritInChildApplications tag from the root web.config restored normal operations of most of the error handling, but for some reason error 503 is a correct response header, but the IIS server is performing the custom actions for error 403.4 which is a redirect to https. I'm looking to restore defaults for error pages so that the behavior once again is restored. I then can re-add customizations for the error pages.
