• DHTML library for handling pictures and videos using AJAX

  This is based on my full question. I decided to take it in parts and see if I still can't get any help. What are all the options we've got for client-side frameworks? I've heard mostly about prototype and jquery, but I know there are way too many options out there beyond those two, and I don't know if they handle async download. From all of them which one is the fastest, both on the DHTML (interface) and the AJAX (download)? What are the advantages it has over the others?

• link_to_function toggle problem - Ruby on Rails

  I asked this question back in November and everything seemed to work just fine. I am recently trying to implement it again and running into a problem. I am not receiving any error message, just can't get the toggle to work. Using Rails 2.3.5 and Ruby 1.8.7. See anything wrong here? • What do the FireBug DOM colors mean?

  I'm confused with these colors. I noticed there are 4 colors showing in the left hand column of FireBug DOM tree: Bold black Black Bold green Green In the right hand column: Blue Red Bold green Green Multiple color elements representing object structures. What do this colors represent? And why, e.g, I can access window.document.URL and I can't access window.document.body in Console even though they are both in the "not-bold black" category in the DOM tree? Thanks a lot

• Ajax cache control

  Hello, I am having a problem with ajax requests in Internet Explorer and in Chrome - I cannot bust the cache. Normal pages don't have the problem - it's just the ajax requests. I know that one workaround is to append a random query string variable to the end of the URL. However, I don't want to lose all the benefits of caching, I just want the browser to pick up the new file if the version on the server is different from the cached version. I have tried manually setting the ajax POST header, to no avail: xmlHttp.setRequestHeader("Cache-Control", "must-revalidate"); Adding this to my .htaccess file doesn't work either: <FilesMatch "\.(js|css).*" Header set Cache-Control: "max-age=172800, public, must-revalidate" </FilesMatch Any help would be greatly appreciated. • Why Do Browsers Leak Memory?

  A colleague and I were speaking about browsers (using browser control in a project), and it appears as plain as day that all browsers (Firefox, Chrome, IE, Opera) display the same characteristic or side-effect from their usage and that being 'Leaking Memory'. Can someone explain why that is the case? Surely as with any form of code, there should be proper garbage collection? PS. I've read about some defensive patterns on why this can happen from a developer's perspective. I am aware of an article Crockford wrote on IE; but why is the problem symptomatic of every browser? • Does jQuery strip some html elements from a string when using .html()?

  I have a var that contains a full html page, including the head, html, body, etc. When I pass that string into the .html() function, jQuery strips out all those elements, such as body, html, head, etc, which I don't want. My data var contains: <html> <head> <title>Untitled Document</title> </head> <body> </body> </html> // data is a full html document string data = $('<div/>').html(data); // jQuery stips my document string! alert(data.find('head').html()); I am needing to manipulate a full html page string, so that I can return what is in the element. I would like to do this with jQuery, but it seems all of the methods, append(), prepend() and html() all try to convert the string to dom elements, which remove all the other parts of a full html page. Is there another way that I could do this? I would be fine using another method. My final goal is to find certain elements inside my string, so I figured jQuery would be best, since I am so used to it. But, if it is going to trim and remove parts of my string, I am going to have to look for another method. Ideas?

• How do I make a jQuery POST function open the new page?

  I know that a submit button in HTML can submit a form which opens the target page, but how do I cause a jQuery ajax call POST information to a new page and display the new page. I am submitting information that is gathered by clicking elements (which toggle a new class) and then all items with this new class are added to an array and POSTed to a new page. • Passing jQuery object and WebMethod return value to an OnSuccess function

  I am calling a WebMethod from this code: if($(this).attr("checked")) { .. MyWebMethod(variable1, variable2, onSuccessFunction); } The MyWebMethod returns an integer, and I want to set $(this).attr("id") of the jQuery object above to the returned integer. Basically, I'm trying to do the equivalent of an MVC Ajax.ActionLink...AjaxOptions {UpdateTargetID =...} However, I can't figure out how to get both a reference to $(this) as well as the returned value. For example, if I do: MyWebMethod(variable1, variable2, onSuccessFunction($(this))); I can succesfully manipulate the jQuery object, but obviously it doesn't have the return value from the MyWebMethod. Alternatively, the first code block with a method signature of onSuccessFunction(returnValue) has the correct return value from MyWebMethod, but no concept of the jQuery object I'm looking for. Am I going about this all wrong?

• Assigning console.log to another object (Webkit issue)

  I wanted to keep my logging statements as short as possible while preventing console from being accessed when it doesn't exist; I came up with the following solution: var _ = {}; if (console) { _.log = console.debug; } else { _.log = function() { } } To me, this seems quite elegant, and it works great in Firefox 3.6 (including preserving the line numbers that make console.debug more useful than console.log). But it doesn't work in Safari 4. [Update: Or in Chrome. So the issue seems to be a difference between Firebug and the Webkit console.] If I follow the above with console.debug('A') _.log('B'); the first statement works fine in both browsers, but the second generates a "TypeError: Type Error" in Safari. Is this just a difference between how Firebug and the Safari Web Developer Tools implement console? If so, it is VERY annoying on Apple's Webkit's part. Binding the console function to a prototype and then instantiating, rather than binding it directly to the object, doesn't help. I could, of course, just call console.debug from an anonymous function assigned to _.log, but then I'd lose my line numbers. Any other ideas?

  How do you specify a redirect URL for the adobe flash express install? I'm using swfobject 2.2, and while I thought MMredirectURL in the flashvars might be what I needed, this just doesn't work. I also tried setting redirectUrl in the attributes object before embedding the swf, but this doesn't work either. What is the proper way to specify a redirect URL to go through after the Express Install occurs with swfobject 2.2?

  I am a web developer for a Django-based site for a student organization, and I have the opportunity to make the website temporarily absurd for a day of general campus-wide debauchery and chaos (long story, doesn't matter.) What are your best ideas for web development practical jokes (that you could never use in the real world)? For example, one idea we had was to use a client-side script to convert each character to its upside down equivalent in Unicode, si?? ??i? ?ui????os. I'm not necessarily looking for Django-specific solutions. I imagine most of these things would happen on the front-end. I am also quite aware that usability will suffer considerably--the point is to be fun for a day, and there will always be a link to the normal version of the site. Also, everything must be relatively cosmetic and easily reversible--I'm happy to swap out static CSS/JS/HTML/templates/images, and even temporarily add a django view, but no messing with the data level!

• Loading HTML into <div> with jQuery-ajax

  Hello everyone, I ran into a bit of trouble while trying to load an external HTML page into a div using jQuery-ajax. I had this div: <div id="content"></div> and wanted to fill it with $("#content").load("include/add.html"); It loads the HTML file perfectly, but inside that add.html is a button that should load add2.html(also using .load), but it seems that neither the button nor the datepicker in that file won't work. I'm guessing the .load function is responsible for that? I am trying to set latitude & longitude to some JSON string but every time straight after it sets the variable it changes it back to "undefined" as soon as it passes the line after var latitude? (using firebug & firequery to debug)

• Implementing a pager for asp.net's DataList/Repeater

  I have a DataList showing the results, and a Repeater that is supposed to be the pager. I decided to use the page number by redirecting with a QueryString parameter, so it will also be bookmarkable ... My problem is mainly in the UI actually. If I put DIV's with their onclick calling a JS function that does window.location = url + pagenumber , then somehow I have to deal with QueryString operations via JS which is a bit messy. If I use LinkButton objects within the ItemTemplate, then the Redirecting happens only when the linkbutton is clicked while whole div has cursor: pointer , you what I mean. What would be the best approach to this? Thanks in advance. Note: I really want to spend the time and effort implementing my own server-side paging. I think its more fun than reading 3rd party manuals.

If I use the "low-level" feature of $.ajax() then it's clear how to specify an error callback, but the convenience methods of $.get(), $.post(), and .load() do not allow an error callback to be specified. What are the best practices for pessimistic error handling? Is it by registering a .ajaxError() with certain wrapped sets, or an introspection-style global error handler in $.ajaxSetup()? What would the relevant portions of code look like to initiate an autosave so that a "could not autosave" type warning is displayed if an attempted autosave fails, and perhaps a message that is customized to the type of error? • Problem with JS Selectbox Function

  I have a selectbox with three options. When a user selects one of the three options, I want a specific div to appear below it. I am trying to write the code that dictates which specific box is to appear when each of the three options is selected. So far, I have only worked on the code that pertains to the first option. However, whenever the user selects any of the three options from the selectbox, the function for the first option is triggered and the div is displayed. My question is two part: 1) How do I write a conditional function that specifically targets the selected option 2) What is the best way to accomplish what I have described above; How do I efficiently go about defining three different functions for three different options in a select box? • Combine multiple JSON files into one; retrieve using jQuery/getJSON()

  I have some jQuery code which retrieves content using getJSON(). There are n JSON files, which are retrieved from the server as needed: /json-content/data0.json /json-content/data1.json /json-content/data2.json etc... Instead, I want to store all the JSON in a single file to reduce the number of HTTP requests needed to retrieve the data. What is the best way to do this? If I concatenate the JSON files together, it no longer works with getJSON(). I would prefer not to transform the JSON data ahead of time, as it is coming from a third party data source. Any suggestions?

• Problem with jQuery in Internet Explorer 8

  I am trying to get my jQuery functions to work on IE8. I am loading the library from google's servers (http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.3/jquery.min.js). The $(function(){}) is never called. Instead, I get an error "Object expected". I opened the developer and ran "typeof $" in the console, and it came up as "undefined". I have tried going to other sites that I know use jQuery (jquery.com), and those all work, is there something I might be missing here?
