  • Edit Text in a Webpage with Internet Explorer 8

    - by Matthew Guay
Internet Explorer is often decried as the worst browser for web developers, but IE8 actually offers a very nice set of developer tools.  Here we’ll look at a unique way to use them to edit the text on any webpage. How to edit text in a webpage IE8’s developer tools make it easy to make changes to a webpage and view them directly.  Simply browse to the webpage of your choice, and press the F12 key on your keyboard.  Alternately, you can click the Tools button, and select Developer tools from the list. This opens the developer tools.  To do our editing, we want to select the mouse button on the toolbar “Select Element by Click” tool. Now, click on any spot of the webpage in IE8 that you want to edit.  Here, let’s edit the footer of Google.com.  Notice it places a blue box around any element you hover over to make it easy to choose exactly what you want to edit. In the developer tools window, the element you selected before is now highlighted.  Click the plus button beside that entry if the text you want to edit is not visible.   Now, click the text you wish to change, and enter what you wish in the box.  For fun, we changed the copyright to say “©2010 Microsoft”. Go back to IE to see the changes on the page! You can also change a link on a page this way: Or you can even change the text on a button: Here’s our edited Google.com: This may be fun for playing a trick on someone or simply for a funny screenshot, but it can be very useful, too.  You could test how changes in fontsize would change how a website looks, or see how a button would look with a different label.  It can also be useful when taking screenshots.  For instance, if I want to show a friend how to do something in Gmail but don’t want to reveal my email address, I could edit the text on the top right before I took the screenshot.  Here I changed my Gmail address to [email protected]. Please note that the changes will disappear when you reload the page.  You can save your changes from the developer tools window, though, and reopen the page from your computer if you wish. We have found this trick very helpful at times, and it can be very fun too!  Enjoy it, and let us know how you used it to help you! • Blackberry ListField Text Wrapping - only two lines.

    - by Diego Tori
Within my ListField, I want to be able to take any given long String, and just be able to wrap the first line within the width of the screen, and just take the remaining string and display it below and ellipsis the rest. Right now, this is what I'm using to detect wrapping within my draw paint call: int totalWidth = 0; int charWidth = 0; int lastIndex = 0; int spaceIndex = 0; int lineIndex = 0; String firstLine = ""; String secondLine = ""; boolean isSecondLine = false; for (int i = 0; i < longString.length(); i++){ charWidth = Font.getDefault().getAdvance(String.valueOf(longString.charAt(i))); //System.out.println("char width: " + charWidth); if(longString.charAt(i) == ' ') spaceIndex = i; if((charWidth + totalWidth) > (this.getWidth()-32)){ //g.drawText(longString.substring(lastIndex, spaceIndex), xpos, y +_padding, DrawStyle.LEFT, w - xpos); lineIndex++; System.out.println("current lines to draw: " + lineIndex); /*if (lineIndex = 2){ int idx = i; System.out.println("first line " + longString.substring(lastIndex, spaceIndex)); System.out.println("second line " + longString.substring(spaceIndex+1, longString.length())); }*/ //firstLine = longString.substring(lastIndex, spaceIndex); firstLine = longString.substring(0, spaceIndex); //System.out.println("first new line: " +firstLine); //isSecondLine=true; //xpos = 0; //y += Font.getDefault().getHeight(); i = spaceIndex + 1; lastIndex = i; System.out.println("Rest of string: " + longString.substring(lastIndex, longString.length())); charWidth = 0; totalWidth = 0; } totalWidth += charWidth; System.out.println("total width: " + totalWidth); //g.drawText(longString.substring(lastIndex, i+1), xpos, y + (_padding*3)+4, DrawStyle.ELLIPSIS, w - xpos); //secondLine = longString.substring(lastIndex, i+1); secondLine = longString.substring(lastIndex, longString.length()); //isSecondLine = true; } Now this does a great job of actually wrapping any given string (assuming the y values were properly offsetted and it only drew the text after the string width exceeded the screen width, as well as the remaining string afterwards), however, every time I try to get the first two lines, it always ends up returning the last two lines of the string if it goes beyond two lines. Is there a better way to do this sort of thing, since I am fresh out of ideas?

  • Webbrowser control: Get text value from html text

    - by Khou
The web browser has the following displayed content, within a html table. [Element] [Value] Name John Smith Email [email protected] We know that the value of the elements are on to the right of the element and they are both on the same line (this is how it appears on the screen but in the html code it might not appear like this). How do you get the values of element name and element email? (first remove all html tag? then somehow use regular express to get the values? or figure out how to use html agility pack?)

  • Replace text with other text in the same line

    - by skerit
I don't know if I can use regex for this, but I want to replace something in this xml: <custom-attribute name="Attribute_1" dt:dt="string">Danny Boyle</custom-attribute> <custom-attribute name="DVD-releasedatum" dt:dt="string">06/10/1999</custom-attribute> should become <Attribute_1>Danny Boyle</Attribute_1> <DVD-releasedatum>06/10/1999</DVD-releasedatum> Removing this from the first tag isn't hard, but how can I close my newly formed tag?

  • High quality (commercial) Text to English speech software? [closed]

    - by bodacydo
I'm working on a software project and I am researching text-to-speech products to use. Does anyone know what are the current state of the art text-to-speech systems? Ideally the speech should be indistinguishable from a native American or English speaker. I'm looking for products with SDK or API that I can easily hook into. Just to clarify and iterate on my question - I'm not looking for things like Microsoft's free text-to-speech synthesis program, I'm looking for a high quality professional product.

  • Text encoding in HTML text fields

    - by joe
I have a site up that has a form on it. The form POSTs to a php script which then inserts the data into my database. The page has a charset=UTF-8 attribute in the <meta> tag, and the database is setup to use UTF-8. However, when I copy and paste characters from MS Word into the field, the output is messed up. For example, the quotes in I am using "Microsoft Word" '''' become I am using “Microsoft Word†???? in the database. Anyone have any idea why this might occur?

  • Which FLOSS text editor is most like kwrite without being KDE-based?

    - by darenw
Among text editors on Linux, I usually prefer KWrite. I like that I can quickly turn on/off line numbers and line wrap in the View menu. Other settings are easy to change. Other text editors I've used in the past, such as Gnome's gedit, bury line numbering and wrapping checkboxes deeper into the menu system, making it more distracting to change while concentrating on real work. However, KWrite is a KDE app. On Ubuntu it drags in over a dozen other packages, which I suspect I don't really need. Why would a text editor need all that? It's slower to start up than some other editors I've tried. I'm also trying to run an all-gnome system w/o any KDE, just to see how far I get with it. So, what GUI text editor isn't KDE-based, has few dependencies and quick start-up, easy to change line wrap and numbering, and general similarity to KWrite? What comes closest?

  • What GUI systems let you copy text with formatting preserved, via clipboard?

    - by culebrón
If you select and copy a text from Internet Explorer and paste it in Miscrosoft Word, the formatting is preserved. If you do that in Opera or Firefox in Windows, it's lost, IIRC. I use Gnome desktop in Linux, and formatting is preserved nowhere, which is very inconvenient. Even if desktop lets me copy formatted text, I can't post it into any web form: WISYWIG Javascript forms will strip formatting and make me walk through the whole text and fix it manually. I don't know how things are in Macs. Is there a desktop + browser + editor set that allow passing formatted text consistently throughout?

  • How to highlight text automatically inside an UIAlertView text field

    - by user333624
Hello everyone I have an UIAlertView with a textfield that shows a default value and two buttons, one to cancel and the other one to confirm. What I am trying to do is that when the alert view is popped up the default value is highlighted so the user can override the whole value faster than manually erasing it. - (void)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView didSelectRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath { UIAlertView *alert = [[UIAlertView alloc]initWithTitle:@"Title" message:@"" delegate:self cancelButtonTitle:@"Cancel" otherButtonTitles:@"Continue",nil]; [alerta addTextFieldWithValue:@"87893" label:@"value"]; UITextField *textField = [alert textField]; campoTexto.highlighted = YES; campoTexto.keyboardType = UIKeyboardTypeNumbersAndPunctuation; [alertt show]; [alert release]; } for some reason there is a highlighted attribute for the textfield but it doesn't seem to work and there is no trail of that attribute in the Class documentation.

  • Connecting office to data center via Metro-ethernet

    - by Eric
I am installing a metro ethernet link from my office to my data center. The office will have a cisco 3750 with several vlans. The data center end will have a more complicated set up. The metro e from the office will connect to a 2960, which will have two other 2960s with a few vlans and a 2811 router connected to it for connectivity to our other environments and the internet. I am looking at implementing this by connecting the office 3750 and the data center 2960 with a dot1q trunk and doing all routing at the 2811. I will configure subinterfaces for gateways for each of the vlans on the 2811. I work for a small company and don't have much of a budget for an ideal architecture. I can post a simple diagram if needed for clarification. Is there anything I am missing here? I feel like I am forgetting something very basic and want to make sure I eliminate any boneheaded mistakes.

  • Why would LaTeX ignore the font size in the documentclass

    - by Rory
I have a LaTeX file. I'm experimenting with trying to reduce the font size (this is related to my other question here http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2636647/latex-changing-the-font-size-for-a-document-but-in-the-preamble-not-the-docum ). The LaTeX file is generated from another programme. I have edited it to start with \documentclass[4pt,a4paper,english]{report} i.e. I am trying to make the text really small. However it doesn't work. I change that 4pt to anything and the font size is the same. When running pdflatex on it, I get this message printed out. LaTeX Warning: Unused global option(s): [4pt]. That might explain why the error message is What could be going on here? How do I make it use the font size in the documentclass definition?

  • Replacing text with apostrophe text via sed in applescript

    - by bob stinton
I have an applescript to find and replace a number of strings. I ran in the problem of having a replacement string which contained & some time ago, but could get around it by putting \& in the replacement property list. However an apostrophe seems to be far more annoying. Using a single apostrophe just gets ignored (replacement doesn't contain it), using \' gives a syntax error (Expected “"” but found unknown token.) and using \' gets ignored again. (You can keep doing that btw, even number gets ignored uneven gets syntax error) I tried replacing the apostrophe in the actual sed command with double quotes (sed "s…" instead of sed 's…'), which works in the command line, but gives a syntax error in the script (Expected end of line, etc. but found identifier.) The single quotes mess with the shell, the double quotes with applescript. I also tried '\'' as was suggested here and '"'"' from here. Basic script to get the type of errors: set findList to "Thats.nice" set replaceList to "That's nice" set fileName to "Thats.nice.whatever" set resultFile to do shell script "echo " & fileName & " | sed 's/" & findList & "/" & replaceList & " /'"

Compiler does not complains but during the execution i get IllegalArgumentException: HorizontalAlignment. What is that?

  • Get text when enter is pressed in a text box in wxPython

    - by Sam
I have a (single line) TextCtrl. The user types data into this. When they press enter, the contents of the box need to be extracted so they can be processed. I can't figure out how to catch enter being pressed. According to the docs, with the style wx.TE_PROCESS_ENTER set on my TextCtrl, it should generate a wx.EVT_COMMAND_TEXT_ENTER event when enter is pressed in the box, which I could then catch. However, wx.EVT_COMMAND_TEXT_ENTER seems not to exist (I get "module has no attribute EVT_COMMAND_TEXT_ENTER), so I'm a bit stuck. Googling just gets a couple of hits of people complaining wx.EVT_COMMAND_TEXT_ENTER doesn't work, so I guess I need another way of doing it.
