• Installer doesn't display partition I want to install to

  While performing a Ubuntu 10.10 installation on my laptop, it doesn't show partitions pertaining to the PC. My PC configuration is as follows : HP Pavilion dv6 - 2020AX AMD Turion II Dual Core Mobile Processor M500 4 GB RAM OS Installed : Windows 7 500 GB Hard drive partitioned as follows : C : 227 GB (Free : 142 GB) D : 11.9 GB (Free : 1.98 GB) - Recovery F : 174 GB (Free : 18 GB) G : 50.5 GB (Free : 50.4 GB) So, I want to perform a Dual-boot installation on my PC, so that Ubuntu resides in the free disk space G:. Therefore, I started the Ubuntu 10.10 installation and select the manual partitioning feature in the installation. However, in the 'Allocate Drive Space' section of the installation, following partitions information is displayed: Partition Type Size Used /dev/sda /dev/sda1      1 MB    unknown /dev/sda2    ntfs    208 MB   unknown /dev/sda3   ntfs    244813 MB    168540 MB /dev/sda4    ntfs    255083 MB   3221 MB where /dev/sda - 500 GB So, what exactly is the problem? What is it should I do to install Ubuntu 10.10 in the G: disk space? Why are the partitions not being shown as the way they should be? Any Suggestions. Thank you for the help.

• Create 8.3 name for an existing directory

  I have a machine that initially had 8.3 filename creation disabled. However, this was causing issues with some legacy software, so it was re-enabled. I'm wondering if it's possible to go back and "add" 8.3 filenames to certain existing directories. For example, say I have a directory named "C:\name with spaces" and I get the following output when I run "dir /x": C:\>dir /x Volume in drive C has no label. Volume Serial Number is 6873-65B8 Directory of C:\ 04/09/2010 01:57 PM <DIR> name with spaces ... I'd like to somehow add an 8.3 name for the directory without recreating it, and then get the following: C:\>dir /x Volume in drive C has no label. Volume Serial Number is 6873-65B8 Directory of C:\ 04/09/2010 01:57 PM <DIR> NAMEWI~1 name with spaces ... I tried the 'rename' command but it didn't do the trick.

• Trouble launch byobu with custom windows.NAME file

  Apologies if the solution is obvious but I'm stumped! I want to launch byobu from within my Gnome 3 desktop environment on 12.04 but it's not working for me as yet. Here's what I have: created a windows list file ~/.byobu/windows.mrb then tried to launch byobu from within the gnome terminal with: $ BYOBU_WINDOWS=mrb byobu But it gives me the default windows list, NOT my windows list. I followed these instructions from the wiki: http://goo.gl/omgl8 Here is a sanitised version of my windows.mrb file: screen -t local bash screen -t name1 ssh xxx@xxx screen -t name2 ssh root@xxx screen -t name3 bash Appreciate the time and effort. • Display settings changes automatically with dual monitors in 12.04 and 12.10 AMD

  Dual monitors works fine, except that the settings suddenly change. This happens very often, sometimes several times in a few minutes. It is very irritating having to set the settings again each time. Suddenly mirroring is set to on, sometimes the monitor switch places (from left to right and so on), and most of the times the screen resolutions are also changed. I use Gnome Shell. I have tried unity with the same result. I use an open driver. I have earlier used fglrx, with some better results (still happens, but not so often), but can't install it sucsessfully after upgrading to ubuntu 12.10. I know there is a similar question about this issue, but it's not answered. I hope someone can help me.

• Unity does not display properly [closed]

  Ubuntu Unity on the Ubuntu netbook edition installs without a problem but when I log in though, where the panels are, there is just blank area with a shadow effect style thing on it. I can open apps but the Window buttons and the global menu are not visable. Does this mean that I cannot use Unity. I'm running it through Wubi on a Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop. My total ammount of graphics memory is 831MB My dedicated memory is 128MB. The odd thing is is that Windows Aero displays without a problem so why is there a problem with Unity Hope this helps Ben

• Why do fonts sometimes look "fat" on Mac OS X?

  Sometimes when resuming from suspend, the fonts in Mac OS X look "fatter" than normal. Unfortunately right now I can't get my Macbook Pro to exhibit the "normal" behavior for comparison, it has been abnormal yesterday and today. If I can get screenshots of what I think is 'normal', I'll add them. "Fixing" this has been random. I use an external monitor, and sometimes unplugging it and plugging back in, or even turning it off and back on has worked. Sometimes with the display attached (or not) detecting displays works. Sometimes logging out or rebooting entirely is what it takes. Displays used: Macbook Pro 15" built-in display Dell 27" LCD (2009 model) Software where I see this happen, at least most noticably: Firefox (screenshots below) iTerm Things MacIrssi (screenshots below) I am using Mac OS X 10.5.8. • Google webmaster tools: changing address from domain name to subdomain

  So we originally have our blog on our main domain (for example, it would be on www.example.com). Now we have moved it to http://blog.example.com. My question is how do we change the address from www.example.com to blog.example.com. I read this http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=83106 and it said make sure your site is main not a subdomain but I'm trying to move the site to a subdomain. Help.

  I have a directory structure as below: Folder > SubFolder1 > FileName1.abc > Filename2.abc > ............. > SubFolder2 > FileName11.abc > Filename12.abc > .............. > .......... etc. I want to rename the files inside the subfolders as: SubFolder1_Filename1.abc SubFolder1_Filename2.abc SubFolder2_Filename11.abc SubFolder2_Filename12.abc i.e. add the folder name at the beginning of the file name with the delimiter "_". The directory structure should remain unchanged. Note: Beginning of file name is same. e.g. in above case File*. I made below Script for /r "PATH" %%G in (.) do ( pushd %%G for %%* in (.) do set MyDir=%%~n* FOR %%v IN (File*.*) DO REN %%v "%MyDir%_%%v" popd ) Problem with the above script is that it is taking only one Subfolder name and placing it to the beginning of file name irrespective of the folder.

• Windows no longer display with proprietary ATI Catalyst drivers

  I recently started having an issue that opening any application would would show nothing on screen. At the time I noticed it I assumed it was an incompatibility between the new 14 update so reinstalled the old 13.10 iso I used originally. I have now tried a range of ATI drivers including the latest and the exact file I installed the first time with the same results. I can only assume then that it is one of the updates applied at some point, but have no idea which one or how I would go about rolling these back or getting earlier versions of packages. Is anyone else getting this issue? The system has 2 ati 6850s installed, not in crossfire. The open source drivers work fine but I need the ATI ones for cgminer to work.

It has an exmaple that sais use "example.org" if a mail address on the system is "[email protected]" but it also sais that the mail name should be the FQDN. my hostname is "mercury" and my FQDN is "mercury.pacificseatheat.org", so should I use "pacificseatheat.org" or "mercury.pacificseatheat.org" for the system mail name? • How display path ball will bounce?

  I'm trying to figure out a way to show the path a ball will travel, so that the player can line up a shot before they fire the ball. I can't think of a way to calculate this path in advance and show it to the player, especially if it involves collision detection. At first I thought I would run the game at a super high speed for one update, plot the path with some dotted lines where the ball bounced, and then in the next frame hide the 'tracer' ball. This seems to have two issues - Calculating collision detection without actually updating the frames and collision detection getting less reliable at high speeds. If they were straight lines I think I could figure this out in a while loop, but trying to take into account the speed of the ball, the curve of the path, the reflecting from other objects..it all seems a bit much. I'm not looking for any code and this isn't a platform specific question, more just help trying to figure out conceptually how this would work. Can this be done? Are there techniques to achieve this?

• Cannot set video resolution above 640x480 after installing Windows XP SP2

  I've installed Windows XP SP2 on a computer (there was not SP at all). Now the display settings are set back to 640x480 and 4 bits colors. And I can't change it, it's the only option in Settings tab of the Display dialog of Windows. The screen look awful now, how can I solve this problem? UPDATE: Seems to be a problem with the video driver (thanks @Karan and @Hennes). A friend of mine told me that object names such as _yourNameObject are for global variables, but I can't find info about this and I want to make this method more readable.

  I have added a variable at the end of my ~/.basrc file : export xyz = /home/faizal/DEV/ADT workspace/xyz But if i open a new terminal, i get the error : bash: export: 'workspace/xyz': not a valid identifier So i try a variety of alternatives : export xyz=/home/faizal/DEV/ADT\ workspace/xyz export xyz="/home/faizal/DEV/ADT workspace/xyz" export xyz="/home/faizal/DEV/ADT\ workspace/xyz" export xyz='/home/faizal/DEV/ADT workspace/xyz' export xyz='/home/faizal/DEV/ADT\ workspace/xyz' They all give me the error when i try cd $xyz: bash: cd: /home/faizal/DEV/ADT: No such file or directory What am i doing wrong?

• Sex - in domain name is this bad???

  In short I am working with a company that does trade shows... one of their new domain names has the word 'sex' in but completely innocently. EXAMPLE: www. someproductsexpo .com (Being 'some' 'products' 'expo'). The content is completely inoffensive and I do not see there being any other things that would flag either the web or any emails sent from [email protected] as inappropriate. I was just wondering if any has experiences of any domains like this or comments to add? Thanks

  I am trying to draw a semi transparent rectangle and I keep getting an error when setting the textures data. The size of the data passed in is too large or too small for this resource. dummyRectangle = new Rectangle(0, 0, 8, 8); Byte transparency_amount = 100; //0 transparent; 255 opaque dummyTexture = new Texture2D(ScreenManager.GraphicsDevice, 8, 8); Color[] c = new Color[1]; c[0] = Color.FromNonPremultiplied(255, 255, 255, transparency_amount); dummyTexture.SetData<Color>(0, dummyRectangle, c, 0, 1); the error is on the SetData line: "The size of the data passed in is too large or too small for this resource." • Proper Method name for XML builder

  I think this is the right stack for this. I have a helper class which builds CAML queries (SharePoint XML for getting list items from SQL) There is one method that is flexibly used to build the queries that get all related votes and comments for a social item. I don't want to call it BuildVoteorCommentXML or something long winded like that. Is there a good naming convention for getting all Join/Foreign Key objects from a core object?
