• Would using AJAX only "Add to Cart" buttons be wise?

  I want to AJAX enable all of my Add To Cart buttons because search engine bots are indexing these and not paying attention to my robots file or site map. I just don't want to loose potential customers. I have seen a number of top sites using heavily JavaScript support content, including Amazon, is it OK to follow the trend? The rest of my site progressively degrades, but I would really like to implement this because of the benefits to the customer (instant satisfaction), my infrastructure (constant page rebuilds), and allowing me to use SEO tools to optimize without the tool picking up thousands of "Add to Cart" widgets in my catalog. • Ubuntu 10.04 server delay responding to AJAX requests

  I manage a Ubuntu 10.04 server with a couple of domains hosted on it. As I continue to learn more about all these wonderful new (for me), one issue that I have begun to notice is the delay it sometimes takes for the server to respond to certain requests. As an example, when I view the timeline of events using firebug I can see that most of the time when I make a POST, the server responds in under 100ms. Sometimes, however, there is a substantial delay before the RESPONSE from the server. I can't seem to tell when the delay will happen and when it won't, however, when it happens the delay is always for about 4.5 seconds. The delay seems to happen about 30-40% of the time. • How should I update Ajax Control Toolkit in VS 2010?

  Suppose if there is a new version available of Ajax Control Toolkit then how should I install/update it in my visual studio 2010 which has already install older version of same toolkit? I would like to install new one while older toolkit would totally uninstalled, because mostly new toolkit always has all controls that were in the old toolkit & also some new controls. Then 1) Should I've to remove .dll file in my toolkit installation folder and place new .dll file there? If I do so then will VS 2010 automatically delete older entries of toolkit controls in .NET Components list and place new control there? Or 2) Should I've to uninstall old toolkit manually i.e delete .dll file and uncheck all entries in .NET Components list & after that install new one from scratch?

• ASP.NET MVC2 and AJAX

  I am currently developing a new website utilizing ASP.NET MVC2. Much of what I want to do with the website (from a front-end standpoint) involves AJAX-y-type tasks. Two examples: I want to display forms, and switch between them via a drop-down menu (or through links) without having to go back and hit the server every single time. I want the user to be able to select points on a Chart Control and have portions of the page refresh with the appropriate data depending on what he/she selects (partial page refresh). In both these cases, I am able to accomplish what I wish to accomplish using the traditional web forms event handlers, etc. Unfortunately, the use of a ScriptManager violates the spirit of MVC. It seems as if MVC prevents the use of many of the controls that are available to ASP.NET. So, my question is: how do I use AJAX and make AJAX calls without utilizing ScriptManager and the web forms method of utilizing event handlers?

  I need to write a google gadget that reads feeds from google groups. Trouble is I'm making an ajax call to retrieve the feeds and our google apps domain is protected by CAS (central authentication service). So, I'm getting a 400 bad request on making the call. I suspect that the browser is not sending the cookie when making ajax call. How do I ensure that the cookie is also sent with the ajax call? OR if that's not supposed to be the problem, what do i need to do?

• IE8 + Jquery ajax call giving parsererror : for json data which seems valid in Firefox

  The ajax call works fine in FF. the data returned is in JSON here is an example from FF firebug - {"noProfiles": "No profiles have been created, lets start now !"} When I try to print the error in IE8 (& in compatibility modes as well), it says "parsererror". But the output seems to be valid JSON. Here is the ajax function call I'm making. • AJAX get data from large HTML page as the large HTML page loads

  Not entirely sure whether this has a name but basically I have a large HTML page that is generated from results in a db. So viewing the HTML page (which is a report) in a browser directly does not display all contents immediately but displays what it has and additional HTML is added as the results from the DB are retrieved... Is there a way I can make an AJAX request to this HTML page and as opposed to waiting until the whole page (report) is ready, I can start processing the response as the HTML report is loaded? Or is there another way of doing it? Atm I make my AJAX response it just sits there for a minute or two until the HTML page is complete... If context is of any use: The HTML report is generated by a Java servlet and the page making the AJAX call is a JSP page. Unfortunately I can't very easily break the report up because it is generated by BIRT (Eclipse reporting extension). Thanks in advance.

  Hi there. I am trying to create a website in which all interaction takes place on a single page which has its main content filled via AJAX. The site is effectively a template with a central interaction area. Users can click links which results in an AJAX request to fetch a new page to display in the interaction area. In this way, the page never refreshes, instead it has its content fetched and displayed via AJAX. I have found that the CakePHP framework has many useful features that could work with this project, however, I do not no if the Cake's MVC architecture would work with my single page architecture. So, what I really want to know is if I can use CakePHP features and functions on a website of this type, and also if anyone could give me any helpful tips on how I would go about implementing it. I am sorry if this is rambling or vague, english is not my mother tongue so I have trouble expressing what I have to say clearly. Thank you for your time.

  I'm using the AJAX plugin from Andris Valums: AJAX Upload ( http://valums.com/ajax-upload/ ) Copyright (c) Andris Valums It works great, except for the fact that I cannot send proper JSON as a response. I'm setting the headers to 'Content-Type', 'application/json' before sending the JSON-encoded response, and in the plugin I'm saying that I'm expecting JSON: responseType: "json", This gives me a download popup asking to download the JSON/REPONSE file. The strange thing is, when I don't ass the correct "Content-Type" to my response, it works. Of course I want to pass the correct response type, because all my jQuery 1.4 calls are depending on correct JSON. Does anyone else have had this same problem or is there anyone out there willing to try this out ? I'd love to use this plugin but only when I can return proper JSON with the correct content-type Thanks for all your help!

• Ignoring old multiple asynchronous ajax requests

  I've got a custom javascript autocomplete script that hits the server with multiple asynchronous ajax requests. (Everytime a key gets pressed.) I've noticed that sometimes an earlier ajax request will be returned after a later requests, which messes things up. The way I handle this now is I have a counter that increments for each ajax request. Requests that come back with a lower count get ignored. I'm wondering: Is this proper?   Hello, I am having a problem with ajax requests in Internet Explorer and in Chrome - I cannot bust the cache. Normal pages don't have the problem - it's just the ajax requests. I know that one workaround is to append a random query string variable to the end of the URL. However, I don't want to lose all the benefits of caching, I just want the browser to pick up the new file if the version on the server is different from the cached version. I have tried manually setting the ajax POST header, to no avail: xmlHttp.setRequestHeader("Cache-Control", "must-revalidate"); Adding this to my .htaccess file doesn't work either: <FilesMatch "\.(js|css).*" Header set Cache-Control: "max-age=172800, public, must-revalidate" </FilesMatch Any help would be greatly appreciated. • HTML is not being interpreted after JQuery's .ajax function

  Hello there... Once I have retrived an HTML string with the $.ajax function I put it into a div... the HTML is a simple message with a <b> tag, but it's not being interpreted by the browser, I mean, the <b> is not making the text bold. • jQuery won't parse my JSON from AJAX query

  Hi, I'm having difficulty parsing some JSON data returned from my server using jQuery.ajax() To perform the AJAX I'm using: $.ajax({ url: myUrl, cache: false, dataType: "json", success: function(data){ ... }, error: function(e, xhr){ ... } }); And if I return an array of items then it works fine: [ { title: "One", key: "1" }, { title: "Two", key: "2" } ] The success function is called and receives the correct object. However, when I'm trying to return a single object: { title: "One", key: "1" } The error function is called and xhr contains 'parsererror'. I've tried wrapping the JSON in parenthesis on the server before sending it down the wire, but it makes no difference. Yet if I paste the content into a string in Javascript and then use the eval() function, it evaluates it perfectly. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Anthony

  I've been working on a complex app with one main dashboard. I don't particularly like the design because it tries to do too much on one page. So the lead developer thought it would be a good idea to use ajax - because the page is so big. Refreshing part of it is far faster than loading it again. Problem is there's several ways data can be used. Adding items Editing rows Performing actions on selected rows (selected using a checkbox) Changing single items (like location, phone) My problem is making GENERALIZABLE ajax code that can operate on the data in a div, using class names to assemble the proper information for the ajax call. I did pretty well, but can't help but want to see if there's a better way to do it.

• Dealing with ISO-encoding in AJAX requests (prototype)

  I have a HTML-page, that's encoded in ISO-8859-1 and a Prototype-AJAX call that's build like this: new Ajax.Request('api.jsp', { method: 'get', parameters: {...}, onSuccess: function(transport) { var ajaxResponse = transport.responseJSON; alert(ajaxResponse.msg); } }); The api.jsp returns its data in ISO-8859-1. The response contains special characters (German Umlauts) that are not displayed correctly, even if I add a "encoding: ISO-8895-1" to the AJAX-request. Does anyone know how to fix this? If I call api.jsp in a new browser window separately the special characters are also corrupt. And I can't get any information about the used encoding in the response header. The response header looks like this: Server Apache-Coyote/1.1 Content-Type application/json Content-Length 208 Date Thu, 29 Apr 2010 14:40:24 GMT Notice: Please don't advice the usage of UTF-8. I have to deal with ISO-8859-1.

• Not all parameters get sent in jquery ajax call

  I have a strange error where my jquery ajax request doesn't submit all the parameters. $.ajax({ url: "/ajax/doAssignTask", type: 'GET', contentType: "application/json", data: { "just_a_task": just_a_task, "fb_post_date": fb_post_date, "task_fb_postId": task_fb_postId, "sedia_task_guid": sedia_task_guid, "itemGuid": itemGuid, "itemType": itemType, "taskName": taskName, "assignedToUserGuid": assignedToUserGuid, "taskDescription": taskDescription }, success: function(data, status) { //success code }, error: function(xhr, desc, err) { //error code } }); But using firebug (and debugging) I can see that only these variables are posted: assignedToUserGuid itemGuid itemType just_a_task taskDescription taskName It's missing fb_post_date, task_fb_postId, and sedia_task_guid I have no idea what would cause it to post only some items and not others? Anyone know? Data is sent to asp.net controller that returns jsonresult (hence the contentType) Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

• Prototype's Ajax.Request not working in Chrome

  I am just doing a simple Ajax.Request call using the newest version of Prototype. It works fine in Firefox, Internet Explorer, and even Safari... but not in Chrome. Here is my code... alert(url); new Ajax.Request(url, { method: 'get', onSuccess: function(transport) { alert('test'); } }); It pops up he URL alert but the test alert never comes up. Like I said it does in every other browser. I am not getting any javascript errors and I have used Firebug. I did a console.log on each event and it gets to the onLoading stage of Ajax.Request but never onLoaded. Very confused... ?
