  I read about the CRIME attack against TLS Compression (CRIME is a successor to the BEAST attack against ssl & tls), and I want to protect my webservers against this attack by disabling SSL Compression, which was added to Apache 2.2.22 (See Bug 53219). I am running Scientific Linux 6.1, which ships with httpd-2.2.15. What programs will do this with minimal fuss? (I don't have or want to pay for a full license of QuickTime Pro.) UPDATE: Let me make this more clear: minimal fuss means: I download some EncoderMagic.app (for example), I double click it to launch it. I select the folder with my numbered images, and out pops my movie. No mess. No resizing. ... Perhaps this doesn't exist (or is called QuickTime Pro?)

• .vob to h.264 MP4 Files - Worth The Effort?

  When I was doing the converting to digital format a while back I chose .VOB due to no quality loss. However recently I have been informed of this h.264 compression method. Time is not an issue here, I don't mind waiting for conversions etc. I also understand that any sort of compression will reduce quality. To test I converted a 4GB .VOB to a .mp4 using h264 in handbrake and the quality loss was very very very hard to notice. From what I have understood through research Space = .mp4(h.264) Quality = .Vob Playback = Both equally supported? But these concerns have yet to be answered: My comparison was done on a computer monitor, would the quality loss be substantially noticable if I purchased a 50 inch TV in the future? Is this type of file highly supported? (I don't want to experience incompatible players) What other issues could a conversion of files such as this cause in the future?

  I had some PDF files and just try to open it and do some highlighting using Acrobat 10 (also called Adode Reader X)... After highlighting, I save the file (using a different filename), and now the file change from 4MB to 3MB... is it just compression? Or making the images have lower clarity? (thought I cannot see any difference). What is the reason? If it is just compression, then why wasn't it done before, as winzip technology is quite mature more than even 10, 12 year ago.

• Getting iTunes to play third party AAC files

  I have a library filled with some old MP3 files and I'm in the process of changing them all to AAC for the better sound quality. Obviously I can't just create AAC versions of the files I already have because they would sound worse (lossy compression to converted to more lossy compression), so I'm going to their source and downloading them in a lossless form and using a third party to make them into AAC. Apparently iTunes will not handle AAC files that aren't made with iTunes. Is there a way around this? I've looked at third party programs and would be willing to use them, but since they all require the iTunes/iPod/iEverything driver, I don't know if they would still prevent my files or not. Also before you jump on my back about pirating, these files are from old CDs that I lost years ago. I paid for them. Thanks.

• Can Squid 2.7 proxy gzipped content

  We have a forward proxy for our network which is Squid 2.7. This is managed for us by a third party. We noticed recently that http requests going from our network to the web were having the Accept-Encoding header removed. This was resulting in all web traffic across our network (approx 8000+ PCs) being uncompressed even though the browsers and server on each end were capable. We have asked the third party to look into this and they have said it is because Squid 2.7 does not support compression. I understand this to be true but I was under the impression that the compression happened on the webserver rather than the proxy. So... Can Squid 2.7 proxy and/or cache content that is gzipped? If it can, how/why might it be configured such that the Accept-Encoding header is being removed?

• MySQL gzipped Export in PhpMyAdmin has wrong size in Mozilla

  That is really strange. I am using PhpMyAdmin 2.11.9.6 on Linux hosting. While I am Exporting databases using "gzipped" compression in Mozilla, I am getting files which have size of uncompressed database, but they seems to be downloading in incredible speed (10 times quicker than is possible using my ISP). So at the end: for database of 10M size I am getting 10M gzip downloaded in miniseconds it has indeed shown 10M size on drive it is corrupted Zip compression is working just fine (I am getting file with cca 1M size with fine content of compressed database) And the weirdest thing: that is happening for Mozilla Firefox (13.0.1) only, Internet Explorer 9 is downloading correct gzipped files... Any hint?

Yes; I have seen that if you are using a compressed backup, it takes lesser time when you try to restore a database. I have previously blogged about the same subject. As we all know unlike windows form web forms are state less so when user interacts with web application we need to maintain state amongst web pages and we are using session for maintaining state between web pages for each users. ASP.NET is also provide same kind of session state functionalities. ASP.Net Session state identify request coming for same user and same browser for specific session time out interval and its preserves values in session for that specific time intervals and that’s help us in maintaining state amongst web pages for a specific user. ASP.NET Session state allows us to store session in three way 1. IncProc 2. Session State Service 3. SQL Server. In SQL Server mode it will store session in SQL Server tables instead of storing it in Server Memory. • Why is HTML/Javascript minification beneficial

  Why is HTML/Javascript minification beneficial when the HTTP protocol already supports gzip data compression? I realize that Javascript/HTML minification has the potential to significantly reduce the size of Javascript/HTML files by removing unnecessary whitespace, and perhaps renaming variables to a few letters each, but doesn't the LZW algorithm do especially well when there are many repeated characters (e.g. lots of whitespace?) I realize that some Javascript minification tools do more than just reduce size. Google's closure compiler, for example, also tries to improve code performance by inlining functions and doing other analyses. But the primary purpose of Javascript minification is usually to reduce file size. I also realize there are other reasons you might want to minify aside from performace, such as code obfuscation. But again, that reason is not usually emphasized as much as performance gain and file size reduction. For example, Closure Compiler is not advertised as an obfuscation tool, but as a code size reducer and download-speed enhancer. So, how much performance do you really gain from Javascript/HTML minification when you're already significantly reducing file size with gzip compression?

• Minimizing data sent over a webservice call on expensive connection

  I am working on a system that has many remote laptops all connected to the internet through cellular data connections. The application will synchronize periodically to a central database. The problem is, due to factors outside our control, the cost to move data across the cellular networks are spectacularly expensive. Currently the we are sending a compressed XML file across the wire where it is being processed and various things are done with (mainly stuffing it into a database). My first couple of thoughts were to convert that XML doc to json, just prior to transmission and convert back to XML just after receipt on the other end, and get some extra compression for free without changing much. Another thought was to test various other compression algorithms to determine the smallest one possible. Although, I am not entirely sure how much difference json vs xml would make once it is compressed. I thought that their must be resources available that address this problem from an information theory perspective. Does anyone know of any such resources or suggestions on what direction to go in. This developed on the MS .net stack on windows for reference.
