  • What IDE(s) or editor(s) do companies like Google, Apple, IBM, etc. use?

    - by Pius
Even though I have quite some experience in using various tools, I still can't make up my mind whether I prefer using IDE or a simple editor for code editing. Most IDEs I have experienced are written in Java (like Eclipse) which makes them slow and bulky. What's good about them is that it provides lots of tools. On the other hand editors are usually VERY fast. They can also be extended to become more similar to IDEs but usually I don't do that. However, there is Sublime Text 2 which has some basic code completion built-in. My question would be whether most Enterprise companies like Google, Apple, IBM and etc (except Microsoft because they have AMAZING IDE which, I assume, is used by MS developers) force their workers to use IDEs and whether using plain editor with external tools is considered being not professional? P.S. Not talking about cases like Android development where working without IDE barely possible.

  • GMF - programmatically create connections without commands

    - by user1437515
    Hi I am developing an graphical editor with GMF and want to create a set of nodes (Resources in my project) and connections between them upon intialization of a new diagram. I do not want to use commands here because without the code is much slimmer, easier to read and also faster it seems to me. There is no problem creating nodes by calling my XXXFactory.eInstance.createResource() and adding them to the diagram model. My connection is contained as source-/targetConnections feature in the resource class. So I added a similarly created connection as source/target to the resources. But it will not show up in the diagram even though it exists in the ResourceImpl structural feature. Maybe I need to add it additionally to the diagram but since its contained by a feature contained by the diagram, I dont know how. Am i doing something wrong or missing something or is it just not possible to do this without commands. Any help would be much appreciated. Sample code is below. The output of it is the two nodes but no connection. Thanks Lars Example createInitialModel method: private static RDFEditor.ShapesDiagram createInitialModel() { ShapesDiagram diagram = >RDFEditor.RDFEditorFactory.eINSTANCE.createShapesDiagram(); RDFEditor.Resource res = RDFEditorFactory.eINSTANCE.createResource(); RDFEditor.Resource res2 = RDFEditorFactory.eINSTANCE.createResource(); Connection con = RDFEditorFactory.eINSTANCE.createConnection(); EStructuralFeature target = >res.eClass().getEStructuralFeature("targetConnections"); EStructuralFeature source = >res.eClass().getEStructuralFeature("sourceConnections"); res2.setName("rdfs:Resource"); res.setName("rdfs:Class"); con.setName("rdfs:type"); con.setSource(res); con.setTarget(res2); res.getSourceConnections().add(con); res.getTargetConnections().add(con); //res2.eSet(target, con); //res.eSet(source, con); List<? extends Shape> resList = Arrays.asList(res,res2); EStructuralFeature shapes = >diagram.eClass().getEStructuralFeature("shapes"); diagram.eSet(shapes, resList); return diagram; }

  • Breaking out of first element in IHTMLTxtRange

    - by XwipeoutX
I'm trying to do a rich text editor for a web application, and I need to be able to mark some elements in the text as uneditable by the user. The reason for this is they're placeholders for dynamic content (like created date) that I want to have a live preview for. Take the following Code as an example - there's no toolbar or anything in this one, for light weightness, but the textarea and html are synchronized. <!-- DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd" --> <html> <head> <title>Hi</title> <script type="text/javascript" src="http://code.jquery.com/jquery-1.4.2.min.js"></script> <script> $(function() { g = {}; g.iFrame = document.createElement("IFRAME"); $("#frameContainer").append(g.iFrame); g.iDoc = g.iFrame.contentWindow.document; g.iDoc.designMode = "on"; g.jTextArea = $("#textContainer textarea"); setTimeout(function() { g.iDoc.body.innerHTML = "<b class=\"notype\">Cannot type here</b>"; $(g.iDoc).trigger("keyup"); $(g.iDoc.body).focus(); }, 0); $(g.iDoc).keyup(function() { g.jTextArea.text(g.iDoc.body.innerHTML); }); g.jTextArea.keyup(function() { g.iDoc.body.innerHTML = this.innerText; }); var getSelection = function() { if (typeof g.iDoc.selection !== "undefined" && g.iDoc.selection.type !== "Text" && g.iDoc.selection.type !== "None") { g.iDoc.selection.clear(); } return g.iDoc.selection.createRange(); }; $(g.iDoc).keypress(function(event) { // If we're in a marked field, disable the operation. var sel = getSelection(); if ($(sel.parentElement()).hasClass('notype')) { sel.moveToElementText(sel.parentElement()); sel.collapse(); sel.move("character", -1); sel.select(); $("#log").append("<div>outside of thing</div>"); } }); $(testLink).click(function() { // Try and insert stuff at the front $(g.iDoc.body).focus(); var sel = getSelection(); sel.moveToElementText(sel.parentElement()); sel.collapse(); sel.move("character", -100); sel.pasteHTML("Before html?"); $(g.iDoc).trigger("keyup"); $(g.iDoc.body).focus(); }); }); </script> </head> <body id="#body"> <div id="container"> <div id="frameContainer"> <h1> Frame</h1> </div> <div id="textContainer"> <h1> Text</h1> <textarea rows="10" cols="80"></textarea> </div> <a href="#" id="testLink">Test</a> <div id="log"> </div> </div> </body> </html> In the keyup binding, I can successfuly detect if I'm inside another element, and move the cursor to the front of the text before inserting it no problem. However, since there is no text before the element marked as 'notype', it gets inserted inside the same element. This is double bad when the user presses "enter", as a new tag is genrated, and the "notype" tag is duplicated, obviously not required. I want the behaviour as follows: * If the user types while the cursor is in the 'notype' tag, the cursor is moved to front and the text goes there * If the cursor is at the last position inside the 'notype' tag, then the text appears after the tag * If the user types anywhere else, it's inserted as always. The link at the bottom tries to manually put the cursor at the front and insert the html. Obviously fails. I know this one can work by doing something like $(g.iDoc.body).prepend("before!"), but this obviously won't work in a real scenario (using keyup).

  • Convert a string representation of a hex dump to a byte array using Java?

    - by ravigad
I am looking for a way to convert a long string (from a dump), that represents hex values into a byte array. I couldn't have phrased it better than the person that posted the same question here: http://www.experts-exchange.com/Programming/Programming_Languages/Java/Q_21062554.html But to keep it original, I'll phrase it my own way: suppose I have a string "00A0BF" that I would like interpreted as the byte[] {0x00,0xA0,0xBf} what should I do? I am a Java novice and ended up using BigInteger and watching out for leading hex zeros. But I think it is ugly and I am sure I am missing something simple...

  • benchmark tcp: ab or iperf like tool to send hex/binary/pcap data?

    - by olan
Hello all, I have written a server in Twisted for a current project I'm working on, and now I need to test it. It receives TCP packets, with the payload consisting of just a serialised binary string. I want to be able to test the server for concurrency/throughput using the binary data as the payload, but can not find any tool that will allow me to do this. I tried iperf -F but it didn't work, as I think it was sending the binary/hex data as chars. I've also looked at ab which seems to be perfect - if only for http. As well as these, I've had a look at tcpreplay, but it doesn't perform any testing (or establish TCP connections) so it's not much use. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I'm rather stuck on this one!

  • Tool to convert a file of HEX to ASCII character set?

    - by Aaron
    Question: Is there a known tool to convert a file consisting of 2 byte Hex into ascii? Note: - Maintain file offset listing in bytes Example: File contents: 00000000 0054 0065 0073 0074 0020 0054 0065 0073 00000008 0074 0020 0054 0065 0073 0074 0020 0054 00000016 0065 0073 0074 0020 0054 0065 0073 0074 00000024 0020 0054 0065 0073 0074 0020 0054 0065 00000032 0073 0074 0020 0054 0065 0073 0074 0020 00000040 0054 0065 0073 0074 000a 0054 0065 0073 00000048 0074 0020 0054 0065 0073 0074 0020 0054 00000056 0065 0073 0074 0020 0054 0065 0073 0074 00000064 0020 0054 0065 0073 0074 0020 0054 0065 Expected output 00000016 0065 0073 0074 0020 0054 0065 0073 0074 |est Test Test Te| 00000032 0073 0074 0020 0054 0065 0073 0074 0020 |st Test Test.Tes| 00000048 0074 0020 0054 0065 0073 0074 0020 0054 |t Test Test Test| 00000064 0020 0054 0065 0073 0074 0020 0054 0065 | Test Test Test |

  • complete, monospaced Unicode font?

    - by nachik
I'm looking for a good programming font that lets me add comments and string literals in Unicode, usually Japanese and Chinese along with some Latin and Cyrillic languages. So far the situation seems to be "complete, monospace, free, pick 2" and Google is failing me with this (maybe because there are no good ones?). The best I found is Arial Unicode but it's not monospace, which is a big nuisance for me and the editors I use. Not to mention Python indentation when I'm coding Python. (Links, edits are welcome)

  • What are the dark corners of Vim your mom never told you about?

    - by Sasha
There is a plethora of questions where people talk about common tricks, notably this one. However, I don't refer to commonly used shortcuts that a noob would find cool. I am talking about a seasoned unix user (be she/he a developer, admin, both, etc), who thinks (s)he knows something 99% of us never heard or dreamed about. Something that not only makes his/her work easier, but also is COOL and hackish. After all, vim resides in the most dark-corner-rich OS in the world, thus it should have intricacies that only a few privileged know about and want to share with us.

  • What's in your .emacs?

    - by A. Rex
I've switched computers a few times recently, and somewhere along the way I lost my .emacs. I'm trying to build it up again, but while I'm at it, I thought I'd pick up other good configurations that other people use. So, if you use Emacs, what's in your .emacs? Mine is pretty barren right now, containing only: Global font-lock-mode! (global-font-lock-mode 1) My personal preferences with respect to indentation, tabs, and spaces. Use cperl-mode instead of perl-mode. A shortcut for compilation. What do you think is useful?

  • What IDE to use for Python

    - by husayt
As a Python newbie, it is interesting to know what IDE's ("GUIs/editors") others use for Python coding. If you can just give the name (e.g. Textpad, Eclipse ..) that will be enough. If it is already mentioned, you can just vote for it. But if you can also give some more comparative information, that will be much appreciated. Thanks. Update: Results so far PyDev with Eclipse (CP, F, AC, PD, EM, SI, MLS, UML, SC, UT, LN, CF, BM) Komodo (CP, C/F, MLS, PD, AC, SC, SI, BM, LN, CF, CT) Emacs (CP, F, AC, MLS, PD, EM, SC, SI, BM, LN, CF, CT, UT, UML) Vim (CP, F, AC, MLS, SI, BM, LN, CF ) TextMate (Mac, CT, CF, MLS, SI, BM, LN) Gedit (Linux, F, AC, MLS, BM, LN, CT [sort of]) Idle (CP, F, AC) PIDA (Linux, CP, F, AC, MLS, SI, BM, LN, CF)(VIM Based) NotePad++ (Windows) BlueFish (Linux) JEdit (CP, F, BM, LN, CF, MLS) E-Texteditor (TextMate Clone for Windows) WingIde (CP, C, AC, MLS (support for C), PD, EM, SC, SI, BM, LN, CF, CT, UT) Eric Ide (CP, F, AC, PD, EM, SI, LN, CF, UT) Pyscripter (Windows, F, AC, PD, EM, SI, LN, CT, UT) ConTEXT (Windows, C) SPE (F, AC, UML) SciTE (CP, F, MLS, EM, BM, LN, CF, CT, SH) Zeus (W, C, BM, LN, CF, SI, SC, CT) NetBeans (CP, F, PD, UML, AC, MLS, SC, SI, BM, LN, CF, CT, UT, RAD) DABO (CP) BlackAdder (C, CP, CF, SI) PythonWin (W, F, AC, PD, SI, BM, CF) Geany (CP, F, very limited AC, MLS, SI, BM, LN, CF) UliPad (CP, F, AC, PD, MLS, SI, LI, CT, UT, BM) Boa Constructor (CP, F, AC, PD, EM, SI, BM, LN, UML, CF, CT) ScriptDev (W, C, AC, MLS, PD, EM, SI, BM, LN, CF, CT) Spider (CP, F, AC) Editra (CP, F, AC, MLS, SC, SI, BM, LN, CF) Pfaide (Windows, C, AC, MLS, SI, BM, LN, CF, CT) KDevelop (CP, F, MLS, SC, SI, BM, LN, CF) Acronyms used: CP - Cross Platfom C - Commercial F - Free AC - Automatic Code-completion MLS - Multi-Language Support PD - Integrated Python Debugging EM - ErrorMarkup SC - Source Control integration SI - Smart Indent BM - Bracket Matching LN - Line Numbering UML - UML editing / viewing CF - Code Folding CT - Code Templates UT - Unit Testing UID - Gui Designer (e.g. QT, Eric, ..) • emacs frustration with web development any working dot-files?

    - by Tony Cruise
I really liked flexibility of emacs but it is really annoying to make it work. I want to use it for web development html, css, javascript, php. I first tried emacs-starter-kit . It didn't included nXhtml. Also C-g key binding does not work (they call it starter kit but basic key command does not work). I think it is mapped for git control. That's a frustration for a beginner. Then I replaced emacs-starter-kit with nXhtml. At least C-g is working. But code completion sucks, M-tab does not work. I tried code completion from nXhtml menu with no success. Also NXhtml mode did'nt colorized my file if css is mixed with html. Isn't it recommended for mixed html, css,php files. So why it doesnt work?. Why Emacs folks do not aware of convention over configuration? Dam! ship it something works! Please help me before I am getting crazy. I use Ubuntu 10.04 and emacs-snaphot-gtk 23.1.50-1. Please guide me step by step with your working dotfile url. Even I accept I am a dummy, it is really annoying and frustrating to use emacs.

  • What text editors support vertical rulers?

    - by leeand00
I'm looking for a feature somewhat like the vertical red 80 columns marker in NetBeans but one that's easier to use. I'd like it to function more like the tabs in MS Word except that the horizontal line is displayed on the entire file. I looked on the Comparison of Text Editors over at Wikipedia and I didn't find that "vertical ruler" was one of their features. It would be used to line up html tags in a massive file that I did not create, but have to maintain.

  • What are the preferred versions of Vim and Emacs on Mac OS X?

    - by Michiel de Mare
For those of us that like to use the graphical version of Vim or Emacs, instead of the console version, which version do you recommend? For Vim, there's Mac OS X Vim, MacVim, Vim-Cocoa. For Emacs, CarbonEmacs, XEmacs, and Aquamacs. Are there more? Which of these are ready for prime-time? If it's a tough call, what are the trade-offs? Are all of these still being maintained? No discussion of Vim vs. Emacs, if you don't mind, or comparisons with other editors.

  • Turning off auto indent when pasting text into vim

    - by Rimian
Unfortunately, I am not an experienced vim user. But, I am making the effort to learn it. When I paste code into my document from the clipboard, I get extra spaces at the start of each new line: line line line I know you can turn off auto indent but mine doesn't seem to work because I have some other settings conflicting or something (which look pretty obvious in my .vimrc but don't seem to matter when I take them out). Can someone please show me the way to turn this off when I paste code but still have vim auto indent when I am writing code? Please see my .vimrc file: set expandtab set tabstop=2 set shiftwidth=2 set autoindent set smartindent set bg=dark set nowrap Many thanks

  • Using Emacs for big big projects

    - by ignatius
Hello, Maybe is a often repeated question here, but i can't find anything similar with the search. The point is that i like to use Emacs for my personal projects, usually very small applications using C or python, but i was wondering how to use it also for my work, in which we have project with about 10k files of source code, so is veeeery big (actually i am using source insight, that is very nice tool, but only for windows), questions are: Searching: Which is the most convenient way to search a string within the whole project? Navigating throught the function: I mean something like putting the cursor over a function, define, var, and going to the definition Refactoring Also if you have any experience with this and want to share your thoughts i will consider it highly interesting. • How to comment out a block of Python code in VIM

    - by Rishabh Manocha
I was wondering if there was any key mapping in VIM to allow me to indent certain lines of code (whether those lines have been selected in visual mode, or n lines above/below current cursor position). So basically something that converts the following def my_fun(x, y): return x + y to #def my_fun(x, y): # return x + y I am ok with using either # or """ for commenting out the relevant lines. Ideally, I would also like the same keymapping to uncomment the lines if the given lines have been commented out. Thanks

  • "Go to file" feature in various editors

    - by hekevintran
In TextMate there is a feature called "Go to file" that is used for file navigation. It is a box where you type the name of a file in your project and it will use fuzzy matching to generate a list of candidates files from which you can select. Other editors have this feature, but they each give it a different name: Vim fuzzyfinder Emacs fuzzy-find-in-project TextMate Go to file (fuzzy) Eclipse OpenResource (not fuzzy) Eclipse GotoFile (fuzzy) Komodo Go to File (not fuzzy) Netbeans Go to file (not fuzzy) Does jEdit, Geany, or Ultraedit have this feature?
