• How can I "share" a network share over the internet to multiple operating systems?

  Hello all, We have a network share accessible through our intranet that is widely used. This share has it's own set of fine tuned permissions. I have been tasked with allowing A.D. authenticated access to this share over the internet without the use of VPN. The internet access has to mimic the NTSF permissions in place on the share. Another piece of the puzzle is that the access over the internet has to allow perusal of the share from Windows and Mac OS systems. I had envisioned a web front end that would facilitate downloading to and uploading from the share via a web browser. I'm trying to ask for some suggestions about what type of setup is necessary to achieve this. I've done loads of testing and searching for solutions but I can't seem to get anything to work as I hope. The web server that will be handing all of this is a Windows 2K8 box with IIS 7. How can I allow the users to authenticate against Active Directory when coming from the internet even when coming from a Mac system? I hope my question is not too broad, I'm sorry if I should have broken it up into multiple questions. It all is just tied together in my head. Thank you all for your time and aid.

• CUPS causes printer to click and doesn't print

  I'm suffering a strange problem with my Cannon iP4850 when trying to use CUPS on a Raspberry Pi (this is not RPi specific, please do not vote to move it). When I plug the printer into my Laptop (OSX) or my Desktop W7 it identifies as a iP4800 and prints perfectly. So I plug it into the Pi (running debian), set it up in CUPS enable sharing and can now see the iP4800 series shared on the network. However if I print to it (using AirPrint etc...); the file gets to CUPS safely (shows in the queue) but when it tries to print the printer clicks (like a loud thunk) 3/4 times and then gives in, with a double amber flashing light. In cups it shows as job completed. Do you know why using the pi and cups would cause what appears to be a hardware fault and what I can do to fix the problem or to provide further debug info? • I have just created a subnet for a local network, connecting to a standalone server on another network, now I cannot connect to the internet

  I am just learning some new aspects of servers and networking. We have a network of 5 subnets that all interconnect with each-other. In order to get two computers on the subnet that we were setting up, I changed the IP from the subnet where the standalone server is on (where they used to be set up)to the local subnet we are remotely hooking up. Likewise I also changed the gateway to coincide with the new subnet. Only problem is that since doing this, I am unable to establish a connection to the internet. I can ping the server and correspong gateway & DNS server, but cannot get connected to the internet. We do have a dumb-switch (non-programmable) connected that receives both the internet and private network inputs and distributes (or should do so) to about 5 other computers. Bottom line, I cannot currently connect to the internet, and am wondering what could be causing this.. It is likely something very obvious and pardon me being more vague than I probably should be, but I could use some help resolving this! Thanks for any help!

• Print over the internet from a remote linux session locally (on a Windows 7 machine) to the shared printers?

  I'm trying to use a linux virtual machine as a file server for windows clients. I have successfully implemented remote file sharing (samba+ssh) with which I am able to print locally with a little program that I made for this purpose (jetforms style)... but I would like to hear about a somewhat more direct approach. How can I attach the printers to the server, so that I can for example open a file on the remote session and in the print dialogbox I would see my local printers (on the machine from which I have established a remote session)? I guess there should be some kind of putty tunneling, but dont know how. I have a windows 7 machine locally; there is a CentOS 6 VM over the internet. It has ssh, cups, and samba. I have found a question which asks the opposite: there is a windows based server to connect form linux but that windows has a domain, mine is just a simple windows workstation that is behind NAT and has a dynamic IP. • Flattening PDF transparency

  I have a PDF, made with Inkscape, that uses transparent colors. This image shall be used in a LaTeX document. While preserving the transparency is nice for editing, it can be a problem for printing. Printing usually involves PDF to PS conversion. Since Postscript does not support transparency, this requires either flatting, i.e. creating a vector graphic that works without transparency or rastering, i.e. rendering a bitmap image. When a PDF document containing such a figure is printed (or converted to PS) using Evince (or Cairo or Ghostscript), the whole page gets rendered as a bitmap, rendering fonts ugly (different from other pages). (Adobe Acrobat handles such PDFs well.) Unfortunately, converting the PDF figures to EPS (before including them with LaTeX) doesn't help much, because both pdftops and pdf2ps (again, Cairo or Ghostscript) rasterize the image, i.e. render a bitmap (saved as EPS). (This is slightly better, because it doesn't affect the whole page, but I'd still prefer a vector graphics.) How can I flatten transparency with Inkscape or other software on Linux?

• Why does my Canon printer print document pages at ~25% size?

  I'm using a Canon PIXMA MP250, and I'm running 12.04 LTS. The printer's been working fine for the couple of months I've been a Linux user. That is, until today. I just printed a 1-page ODT document from LibreOffice. Instead of filling the sheet, the document occupies only a little less than 25% of the paper, in the top left corner, and the text has also shrunk to something like 5pt. I looked at the paper format settings for the document and printer, which were set to "letter". I changed these to "A4", hoping that would solve the issue. There was no change, however. I tried printing a different document in LibreOffice and got the same result. I tried exporting the original document to PDF and printing it through Document Viewer. Same result. I then printed a web page from Google Chrome. No formatting problems there. In all cases the print preview looks fine.

  Here is the setup: VirtualBox 4.1.20 (which the Help window describes as 4.1.12_Ubuntu) Extension Pack 4.1.20 (for USB support) Windows 7 Home Premium as a guest operating system on VirtualBox Ubuntu 12.04 with dist-upgrade's to September 2012 as the host operating system. Fuji Xerox DocuPrint P205b, which I believe is a GDI printer, connected via USB. The problem is that often print jobs will sit in the print queue and nothing comes out of the printer. The printer status for the first item in the queue will be Printing even though nothing happens. Then upon rebooting Windows, the print jobs get printed, seemingly simultaneous to the rebooting process; that is as Windows reloads. One way to avoid this problem is to reboot Windows with the printer cable attached, and then submit the print jobs. The print jobs get printed in a timely manner. Perhaps VirtualBox has a problem with USB being plug-n-play and hot pluggable. It's not convenient to have the printer plugged in when Windows boots because: One, this is a laptop, and Two, I may be boot Windows for a purpose other than printing and not anticipate needing to print. Are there any recommendable fixes for this problem?

• Stream Music and Video Over the Internet with Windows Media Player 12

  A new feature in Windows Media Player 12, which is included with Windows 7, is being able to stream media over the web to other Windows 7 computers.  Today we will take a look at how to set it up and what you need to begin. Note: You will need to perform this process on each computer that you want to use. What You’ll Need Two computers running Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional, or Ultimate. The host, or home computer that you will be streaming the media from, cannot be on a public network or part of domain. Windows Live ID UPnP or Port Forwarding enabled on your home router Media files added to your Windows Media Player library Windows Live ID Sign up online for a Windows Live ID if you do not already have one. See the link below for a link to Windows Live.   Configuring the Windows 7 Computers Open Windows Media Player and go to the library section. Click on Stream and then “Allow Internet access to home media.”   The Internet Home Media Access pop up window will prompt you to link your Windows Live ID to a user account. Click “Link an online ID.” If you haven’t already installed the Windows Live ID Sign-In Assistant, you will be taken to Microsoft’s website and prompted to download it. Once you have completed the Windows Live download assistant install, you will see Windows Live ID online provider appear in the “Link Online IDs” window. Click on “Link Online ID.” Next, you’ll be prompted for a Windows Live ID and password. Enter your Windows Live ID and password and click “Sign In.” A pop up window will notify you that you have successfully allowed Internet access to home media. Now, you will have to repeat the exact same configuration on the 2nd Windows 7 computer. Once you have completed the same configuration on your 2nd computer, you might also need to configure your home router for port forwarding. If your router supports UPnP, you may not need to manually forward any ports on your router. So, this would be a good time to test your connection. Go to a nearby hotspot, or perhaps a neighbor’s house, and test to see if you can stream your media. If not, you’ll need to manually forward the ports. You can always choose to forward the ports anyway, just in case. Note: We tested on a Linksys WRT54GL router, which supports UPnP, and found we still needed to manually forward the ports. Finding the ports to forward on the router Open Windows Media Player and make sure you are in Library view. Click on “Stream” on the top menu, and select “Allow Internet access to home media.”   On the “Internet Home Media Access” window, click on “Diagnose connections.” The “Internet Streaming Diagnostic Tool” will pop up. Click on “Port forwarding information” near the bottom.   On the “Port Forwarding Information” window you will find both the Internal and External Port numbers you will need to forward on your router. The Internal port number should always be 10245. The external number will be different depending on your computer. Microsoft also recommends forwarding port 443. Configuring the Router Next, you’ll need to configure Port Forwarding on your home router. We will show you the steps for a Linksys WRT54GL router, however, the steps for port forwarding will vary from router to router. On the Linksys configuration page, click on the Administration Tab along the top, click the “Applications & Gaming Tab, and then the “Port Range Forward” tab below it. Under “Application,” type in a name. It can be any name you choose. In both the “Start” and “End” boxes, type the port number. Enter the IP address of your home computer in the IP address column. Click the check box under “Enable.” Do this for both the internal and external port numbers and port 443. When finished, click the “Save Settings” button. Note: It’s highly recommended that you configure your home computer with a static IP address When you’re ready to play your media over the Internet, open up Windows Media Player and look for your host computer and username listed under “Other Libraries.” Click on it expand the list to see your media libraries. Choose a library and a file to play. Now you can enjoy your streaming media over the Internet. Conclusion We found media streaming over the Internet to work fairly well. However, we did see a loss of quality with streaming video. Also, Recorded TV .wtv and dvr-ms files did not play at all. • C Minishell Command Expansion Printing Gibberish

  I'm writing a unix minishell in C, and am at the point where I'm adding command expansion. What I mean by this is that I can nest commands in other commands, for example: $> echo hello $(echo world! ... $(echo and stuff)) hello world! ... and stuff I think I have it working mostly, however it isn't marking the end of the expanded string correctly, for example if I do: $> echo a $(echo b $(echo c)) a b c $> echo d $(echo e) d e c See it prints the c, even though I didn't ask it to. Here is my code: msh.c - http://pastebin.com/sd6DZYwB expand.c - http://pastebin.com/uLqvFGPw I have a more code, but there's a lot of it, and these are the parts that I'm having trouble with at the moment. I'll try to tell you the basic way I'm doing this. Main is in msh.c, here it gets a line of input from either the commandline or a shellfile, and then calls processline (char *line, int outFD, int waitFlag), where line is the line we just got, outFD is the file descriptor of the output file, and waitFlag tells us whether or not we should wait if we fork. When we call this from main we do it like this: processline (buffer, 1, 1); In processline, we allocate a new line: char expanded_line[EXPANDEDLEN]; We then call expand, in expand.c: expand(line, expanded_line, EXPANDEDLEN); In expand, we copy the characters literally from line to expanded_line until we find a $(, which then calls: static int expCmdOutput(char *orig, char *new, int *oldl_ind, int *newl_ind) orig is line, and new is expanded line. oldl_ind and newl_ind are the current positions in the line and expanded line, respectively. Then we pipe, and recursively call processline, passing it the nested command(for example, if we had "echo a $(echo b)", we would pass processline "echo b"). This is where I get confused, each time expand is called, is it allocating a new chunk of memory EXPANDEDLEN long? If so, this is bad because I'll run out of stack room really quickly(in the case of a hugely nested commandline input). In expand I insert a null character at the end of the expanded string, so why is it printing past it? If you guys need any more code, or explanations, just ask. Secondly, I put the code in pastebin because there's a ton of it, and in my experience people don't like it when I fill up several pages with code. Thanks.

• internet access options in remote area? (read: no comcast,qwest, etc)

  Currently I am living in a fairly "remote" area, in the countryside, and cable internet access through the typical companies like comcast and qwest is just not available here. I've been trying to research other options for fast internet access. There are some small cable companies but they currently do not offer broadband access here. I thought about maybe buying a 3g phone with a data plan and doing some sort of tethering, or perhaps getting an android phone and using it as a wireless AP. This would of course depend on 3g being available here. The only other thing I can think of is some sort of satellite internet service, or doing something crazy like adapting wifi over am radio. Anyone have any ideas, at all, short of moving somewhere else?

• Adobe Reader seems to use wrong lpr command when printing to CUPS

  Hi, on my debian lenny box, printing via CUPS works fine, e.g. using OpenOffice. When printing from Adobe Reader, however, stuff doesn't work. It appears the problem happens during the first step of the process, when Adobe Reader talks to lpr. I guess this is the reason because I get an error message from Adobe Reader like: The following error occurred while printing... 'usage: lpr [-cdfghlmnpqrstv] [-#num] [-1234 font] [-C class] [-i [numcols]] [-J job] [-Pprinter] [-T title] [-U user] [-wnum] [name ...]' Looks like lpr complains about the way Adobe Reader talks to it, doesn't it? This happens no matter if I print to my laser or to CUPS-PDF. It seems like Adobe Reader sends a command like lpr -P CUPS-PDF -o PageSizeA4 -o blah -o blah Is there anything I can configure to make things work?

• Manual Duplex printing for Mac (and/or Linux)

  My printers don't support automatic duplex printing. I'm looking for a solution for my Mac and Linux computers that I've seen with most Windows printer drivers: Check "Manual duplex" in the printer screen Printer starts printing one side A dialog appears, asking me to flip the pages Printer prints the other side. One thing I can do, is print odd pages, then reopen the dialog and print even pages, but this is very inconvenient, especially when I only want to print a certain page range of the document as the Mac dialog forgets my previous page range every time. It gets even more inconvenient, when printing 2-up double sided, or when changing additional settings for this one printout. Is there maybe some tool, that can do this? Or maybe a "virtual printer driver" that can sit somewhere between the dialog and the actual printer driver, which manages these steps? (The Windows tool http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FinePrint can do something like that, but I don't need all of its features - and I need it on Mac/Linux) Thanks, Chris

• Anytime I upload something, my internet slows down extremely. What can I do?

  Title says it all. For a bit more info though: Basically, I have Time Warner cable internet. My speeds maintain a stable 2Mbit/s upload and 20Mbit/s download with average ping times around 30ms. This crazy thing happens though when I upload anything. I went to upload a 200M file to my server today through sftp and my internet completely choked up. I speed tested it during this upload and my ping time was around 800ms, download speeds of 0.2Mbit/s and Upload speeds of 0.3Mbit/s. Note, I wasn't downloading anything during this time either. It is just straight upload. What is it that causes this phenomenon? My router is OpenBSD. Is there anything I could set up to fix this problem(by queues or some such), or is this a problem with cable internet?

• Automatically download files in Internet Explorer without getting prompted to Save / Cancel?

  I am currently using IE7 with XP SP3. When a webpage download with unknown file type loads, I get a prompt asking me what I want to do with the file. My options are FIND SAVE CANCEL. How do I make it so that I don't get this popup prompt, but Internet explorer automatically downloads the file into a directory I choose without asking? PS. I have already tried Tools Internet Options Security Internet Custom Level Downloads Disable/Enable/Enable, but this doesn't help. Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately I have to use IE. I'm using it in connection with other proprietary software based on IE and its settings. And yes I'm aware it's not a great browser. (This is not for strictly personal use in the browsing sense. )

• When connected through a router, a new gateway appears, and I lose my internet connection.

  I have two computers connected to a router, connected to my ADSL modem by PPPoE. One of those computrs use Windows XP, the other uses Windows 7. The computer using Windows 7 keeps getting limited or no connectivity, and I can't use it to connect to the internet. Connecting the computer to the modem without the router 'in the way' worked, and I was able to use the internet - which led me to believe that the problem is with my router. However, I have changed my router, and the problem persists. (Just to be clear: the computer using Windows XP can connect to the internet without any problem). This entire question is about the PC using Windows 7. The only symptom of this problem is that when I see my network devices, in addition to my router (which appears as "Network 4", or something of the sort), I also see an "Unidentified Network". When using ipconfig to check the problem, I see a second gateway, with the IP 0.0.0.0, in addition to the IP of my router.

• Is it possible to combine two internet connections to increase performance?

  I've got a small home network, 3 PCs plus a laptop or two when the relatives come to visit, connected to a single cable internet connection. Now, as soon as everyone starts using the 'net the performance starts to suffer and if the load is heavy enough nobody can get anything done and everyone complains. At one point it was so bad that only one of us could use it at a time. I was researching possible solutions to this problem and I heard that internet cafes that utilize 2 internet connections, possibly from different providers, and have some sort of router that allows them to split the traffic between the both of them, with online games going through one and web traffic going through another. Is this possible? What is the technical term for it, and can/should it be applied to a home network setup or is there another solution to this problem?

  How do I set up a media server in Linux which streams video over the internet? Is it easy to do this? I want a server that will actually encode video in real time to allow it to stream over sometimes slow or unreliable networks. Basically, I want a server that works on the internet. I have a directory with a bunch of video files, and want to make this accessible to myself remotely. For other situations, I found great and useful software (such as the PS3 media server). I'd like to find something equally as useful for streaming video over the internet.

• Stop Windows Media Player from connecting to Internet/MS using hosts file or alternate method?

  Is there a way to prevent Windows Media Player from connecting to the internet and MS using the hosts file or other methods? Edit: (Nov 20 2009 at 19:16) I have both VLC and MPC and I do use them. However I am currently using WMP to organize all my music and I hate that WMP is always making outgoing connections. I just tried TCPView and can't believe how many connections WMP makes when you first launch it. I have even disabled everything in its options that relates to connecting to internet. Could any of you recommend a good media player thats also good for organizing your music library like WMP, and doesnt connect to the internet? Preferably one that a WMP user would actually like as much as WMP. The reason I use WMP is because I like its interface, the way its setup and how it looks.

  Hi Is there any (ideally open source) software for Windows that can be used on a PC, to monitor the usage of internet from that PC? It would need to include both browser and non-browser sources (e.g. a service that sync's calendar to gmail). So any software on your PC that uses would need to be configured to point to this local internet monitoring software/proxy. The monitoring software/proxy then would be configured to point to the company proxy server (address, port & credentials). Things that come to mind that might be close but not really focused on solving this might be perhaps: Charles Proxy, Fiddler 2, SQUID? The idea would be it could give you a daily/weekly/monthly report of internet upload/download usage on a per program/process/service basis for the PC it is being run on. thanks

  I have an internet connection that is using pppoe. In my windows I do not assign an ip address for my network and I am able to connect using password and username. I installed Ubintu 13.10 today, and I did pppoeconf, and I setup an ip/network mask and changed the mac address in the options, and I was able to connect to the Internet. I restarted the computer, and I got a message saying that the wired connection is not managed. Internet was not working. I went to network manager file, and I changed the option to true, but I still can't connect to the Internet. I am pretty new to linux. How can I get my Internet working? Thanks

• How do I connect my Windows XP laptop to the internet?

  Hello fellow super users, The Past I have a Acer Travelmate 2300 laptop running Windows XP. 6 months ago I moved into a new apartment and got a new internet connection set up. After getting an internet connection installed in my apartment I reinstalled Windows XP and at the same time wiped my drive clean losing all the original Acer software and drivers. Once XP was reinstalled I had to find all the drivers again to get the Travelmate laptop connected to the internet. So, using my Vista laptop which was connected fine, I went to the Acer Travelmate Series drivers download page to download the necessary drivers. I transferred them to my Acer XP machine and installed them the best I could (there were no easy instructions so I just had to find all the executables and run them). I eventually got connected to the internet but not exactly in the way I had hoped for. The Present To be connected to the internet I need to have an Ethernet cord connecting my computer (via the Ethernet port) to my router. This is a problem since it defeats the purpose of having a Wireless LAN card in my Acer laptop. One of the programs I downloaded from the Acer Travelmate Series page was the Acer Wireless LAN Configuration Utility. This program allows me to see the current network I am connected to and all the available networks I could potentially connect to. It reminds me of XP's Wireless Network Connection window/utility where you can see all available wireless networks, refresh the network list and connect to one of the networks. I should mention that my ISP set up a security enabled wireless network with WPA. This network requires a network key if you want to connect to it. I guess my Vista computer has the network key entered into it already. The problem is that I do not know what the network key is. Now obviously you would say just contact my ISP to get the key. And I will but there is just one extra weird issue. I am able to connect to another unsecured wireless network in the Wireless Network Connection window/utility. I can be on it as long as my Ethernet cable is plugged in. So this is not really wireless is it? I will only solve being able to get online as long as I am connected to my router via the Ethernet cable. The Main Questions So how do I enable my acer IPN2220 Wireless LAN Card so that I can use my Acer laptop from anywhere with in my apartment? Or should I first get the network key from my ISP to access my security enabled wireless network? And then deal with getting the acer IPN2220 Wireless LAN Card working? Hard & Learned VS Easy & Stupid Of course contacting the ISP would be easier. Have em just come in here and do there thing. The problem with that is that they do not speak English (yeah, im in Poland) and it'd be a hell of a time trying to understand what they are doing (uncomfortable looking over their shoulder).   In our LOB application there is a very important use case of printing letters, which are then printed and posted out from a mail house (thousands per day). The current situation is that the letter templates are created in Word 97 and fields are mail merged from values in database using a VB.Net application that basically uses word automation. But depending on Word 97 is not a good idea today. We only have a couple of PCs that have Word 97 installed as rest of the company has moved to Office 2007. What software or technology (compatible with .Net) is available today that best suits this scenario. Is it better to do the same thing but move to Word 2007 or PDF or something else. Price may not be a factor. The important thing is that the letter templates must be designed by business users and data to fill placeholders come from DB. A bonus would be to import the hundreds of existing Word 97 letter templates without rewriting them from scratch.

• Why does Printing from Javascript in Air happen out of order?

  I am trying to print from an Adobe Air App that embeds an AJAX app. The print function looks like this: function printPage() { asyncSetupForPrint(printCallback); } function asyncSetupForPrint(printCallback) { synchronousMethods(); if (printCallback) printCallback(); } function printCallback() { var pjob = new window.runtime.flash.printing.PrintJob; var psprite = window.htmlLoader; pjob.start(); // etc... } However the print dialog is coming up before the synchronous methods have been executed. Is the AIR JS runtime optimizing something? And if so, is there any way to stop it doing that? (The setup function is doing things like changing the resolution to huge*huge so that the print out looks ok.)
