• How does GCC compile applications that reference a static library

  I've read that the gcc compiler can perform certain optimization when compiling an application that references a static library, for instance - it will "pull" in only that code from the static library that the application depends upon. This helps keep the size of the application's executable to a minimum if portions of the static library are not being used by the app. 1) Is this true? 2) How does GCC know what code from the static library the application is actually using? Does it only look t the header files that are included (directly and indirectly) in the application and then pull code accordingly? Or does it actually look at what methods from the static library are being called?

  I am using Autoit to create an auto-install app. There is an dialog which contains a ListBox control, and in the listbox there are some choices for user (the detailed choices depends on user's machine, for some users there maybe only one choice, for some users there may be 3 choices etc), so I want to get the texts in the listbox to make the decision. • Why does my .NET Windows service not start automatically sometimes?

  Hi all, I have modified a working Windows service that had always been starting beforehand. After adding the System.Management reference it now sometimes will not start automatically. I get the following error: Service cannot be started. System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x80010002): Call was canceled by the message filter. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80010002 (RPC_E_CALL_CANCELED)) I found another post here on SO with someone having the same issue. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/998883/why-wont-my-net-windows-service-start-automatically-after-a-reboot However, the proposed solution was to have the service start after the services it depends on have started. However, when I go to the Dependencies tab for my service, I see: Should I just use the workaround method of putting the thread to sleep, or is there a more proper way of getting this service to start correctly? • application: didFinishLaunchingWithOptions doesn't execute, but RootViewController: viewDidLoad does

  I'm playing around with the iPad SplitView template and it was working fine before I started swapping out view objects in my RootViewController. When it was working fine, the application:didFinishLaunchingWithOptions method would be called and would setup my persistant store objects, then the RootViewController:viewDidLoad method would be called to populate my rootView with data from my store. I opened up IB and started swapping out view objects in my RootView and now the application:didFinishLaunchingWithOptions method never gets called, but the RootViewController:viewDidLoad method still does. Obviously, the app crashes because the viewDidLoad method depends on the successful execution of the didFinishLauchingWIthOptions method to setup the persistent store objects. Does anyone have any thoughts on what is causing this or how I can go about investigating what's causing this? I'm obviously new to iPhone OS development, so I apologize if this questions is absurd in any way. Thanks so much in advance for your help!

• Loading WPF satellite resources dynamically

  Hello! I've read about satellite-assemblies being used in WPF localizations. However, I would like to ask if there is a way to load the satellite-assemblies without following the pre-defined directory structure that depends on the language (ex. If the system language is English, the WPF application looks for the satellite-assembly inside the "en-US" subfolder). This is because I would like to simply swap the satellite-assemblies when distributing the software package without having to create a specific folder per language that would hold the assemblies. I would just like to have the satellite-assembly and the main executable in the same directory. Is this possible and is there even an easy way to do this like simply loading the resource file on application startup once? Thanks!

• How to copy a System.Drawing.Graphics over another Graphics?

  We got some code that implement printing using Printdocument and it does all the drawing directly on the Graphics object received in the PrintEventArgs. It would be more convenient if the code doing the drawing used another canvas and we would add this canvas to the PrintEventArgs Graphics after. Since the code already depends on the Graphics object I need a canvas with this object. I also need a way to copy the canvas onto the PrintEventArgs Graphics. I can create a Graphicsfrom an Image but as far as I know it needs to be stored on the disk. Any suggestions?

I was thinking on using Cosmos for a base system, and adding the needed namespace libraries to it, but as the usual System.Speech.Recognition namespace depends too much on Windows Speech API, I have to forget about using it. So my question is, is there any (free if possible) voice recognition and/or speech speech synthesizer library for C#, what has the following: support for multi-language speaking extracting text content from speech sample synthesizing speech with selectable (or user-written) speech pattern (voice) A general usage, non-windows dependent library would be the best, and of course, if it was free too.

• Can I can configure cxf to use a specific XML parser?

  Is there a way to specify which XML parser cxf uses? Either through the cfx.xml file or programmatically? Our app has the Woodstox parser on its classpath, and cxf seems to be using that by default. However, the Woodstox implementation seems to truncate large Base64 encoded byte arrays in the SOAP packet. Removing Woodstox from the classpath eliminates this truncation problem, but that's not an option right now since other parts of our app also depends on Woodstox. It would be ideal if I could simply tell cxf to use another XML parser. Is this possible?

• AJAX and iFrame: Calling AJAX from inside the iFrame to Update an Outside DIV

  Hi there, I have a page where a user can upload a file along with some other input. Because I wanted this to be AJAX-like, I resorted to using an iFrame to accomplish this. After the file is uploaded and an iFrame is loaded with a response page, I need to update a DIV outside of the iFrame with an AJAX call. The reason for separate updates, is that the result of the outside DIV depends on the input that the user provided with the file input. Can this be done? Am I approaching this the wrong way? • ODBC: Mapping of literal type names in create table statements

  I was wondering if data types in a a literal "create table" statement, executed over ODBC, are replaced with their database specific counterparts (platform is Windows/.Net/C#). I cannot find this feature in the ODBC docs, and there seems to be no list of literal "ODBC data types". However, I know that this works for Oracle, SQL Server and Access; the following statement is executed correctly, although the type LONGVARBINARY is no native type in all of these systems: CREATE TABLE (MYCOLUMN LONGVARBINARY) However, e.g. for Oracle the mapped native type depends on the used ODBC driver. Is this an undocumented feature? Is there a list of supported type names anywhere? Thanks!

  Hi folks I have a client-server project (small project for companies in C#) and the server has a DataSet with some tables (there is no Database for some reasons so we save the DataSet as an XML file). when the clients connect to the server, the server should send some informations to the client depends on his privileges and some clients must add to or Delete from the DataSet in the server. I am thinking in Making a new small DataSet and sending it to the client (as xml) but I don't know how to generate a new DataSet with specific tables and rows (I tried to use Linq to DataSet but nothing worked). My Questions is how can I do that and is this a good solution to send informations to clients ? can you suggest a better scenario to send data to clients(I mean instead of making a new DataSet).

• Regex, encoding, and characters that look a like

  First, a brief example, let's say I have this "/[0-9]{2}°/" regex and this text "24º". The text won't match, obviusly ... (?) really, it depends on the character encoding. Here is my problem, I do not have control on which chars the user uses, so, I need to cover all possibilities in the regex /[0-9]{2}[°º]/, or even better, assure that the text has only the chars I'm expecting °. But I can't just remove the unknow chars otherwise the regex won't work, I need to change it to the chars that looks like it and I'm expecting. I have done this through a little function that maps the "look like" to "what I expect" and change it, the problem is, I have not covered all possibilities, for example, today I found a new "-", now we got three of them, just like latex =D - -- --- ,cool , but the regex didn't work. Does anyone knows how I might solve this?

  I have a shared object ( libxyz.so ). Given LD_LIBRARY_PATH, how can find the exact location of this shared object? If i had a binary that depends on this lib, i would have used ldd on that. Here is the reason why i ask: I have a cgi script which works when using LD_LIBRARY_PATH set to say VALUE1. It does not work when the path is set to VALUE2.   In our project we have a plenty of Unit Tests. They help to keep project rather well-tested. Besides them we have a set of tests which are unit tests, but depends on some kind of external resource. We call them external tests. They can access web-service sometimes or similar. While unit tests is easy to run the integrational tests couldn't pass sometimes - for example due to timeout error. Also these tests can take too much time to run. Currently we keep integration/external unit tests just to run them when developing corresponding functionality. For plain unit tests we use TeamCIty for continuous integration. How do you run the integration unit tests and when do you run them?

• Problem building with MSBuild on Team Build

  Hi, I have recently upgraded from TFS2005 to TFS2010 (and sub-sequently the team build server). I used to be able to get a team build on one of my solutions to work pretty easily, (see structure below) Solution |_Web Site | |_Bin | |_Other Files |_Project 1 |_Project 2 |_Project (n) Now, i can no longer get a build working correctly as it doesnt appear to build all my projects any longer (i've had to create a new build definition). Either that, or its not building the projects in such an order that when it hits project X, that a project it depends on (Project A), has not yet been built, and as such fails. I'm just basically trying to build a web site (not web application project), with some Dependant / linked projects. Why must it be so hard! Everything builds fine in the IDE. If i even open the solution copied to the build server under the 'Sources' directory, i am able to build it fine in the IDE on that server. No such luck with MSBuild though. Thoughts?

• How do I use logback-access in combination with Tomcat 5.5?

  I've got several Web apps running on a Tomcat 5.5 server, and I'm working on improving/updating the overall logging system used throughout the system. I already had some success with logback-classic. However, when I try to use logback-access (i.e. access the lbAccessStatus servlet), I get this exception: exception javax.servlet.ServletException: Wrapper cannot find servlet class ch.qos.logback.access.ViewStatusMessagesServlet or a class it depends on org.apache.catalina.authenticator.AuthenticatorBase.invoke(AuthenticatorBase.java:433) ... root cause java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: ch.qos.logback.access.ViewStatusMessagesServlet org.apache.catalina.loader.WebappClassLoader.loadClass(WebappClassLoader.java:1386) ... I have everything set up according to the docs: common/lib: logback-classic-0.9.15.jar logback-core-0.9.15.jar server/lib: logback-access-0.9.15.jar Moving around the libraries doesn't seem to help. logback-classic seems to work fine, it's just logback-access that causes problems.

• Generating new sources via Maven plugin after compile phase

  I have a Maven project within which I need execute two code generation steps. One generates some Java types, then the second depends on those Java types to generate some more code. Is there a way to have both of these steps happening during my build? At the moment my steps are: execute first code generation plugin (during generate-sources) add directory of generated types to build path execute second code generation plugin (during compile) However my problem is that anything generated by the second code generation plugin will not be compiled (because the compile phase has finished). If I attach the second code generation plugin to an earlier phase, it fails because it needs the classes from the first code generation plugin to be present on the classpath. I know I could split this into two modules with one dependent on the other, but I was wondering if this could be achieved in one pom. It seems like a need a way to invoke compile again after the normal compile phase is complete. Any ideas?

But which options I have, depends on a lot of situations. How could I dynamically compose such a bitmask? Is this valid? • eclipse plugin not loading dll due to long path

  I am building an eclipse plugin (a notes plugin, but its a eclipse plugin in the end). One of the plugins my plugin depends on needs to load a native dll. The problem is, that fails depending on where in the disk such dll is. If it is longer than a certain threshold I get the error below java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: nlsxbe (The filename or extension is too long. ) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadLibraryWithPath(ClassLoader.java:952) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadLibraryWithClassLoader(ClassLoader.java:921) at java.lang.System.loadLibrary(System.java:452) at lotus.domino.NotesThread.load(Unknown Source) at lotus.domino.NotesThread.checkLoaded(Unknown Source) at lotus.domino.NotesThread.sinitThread(Unknown Source) at com.atempo.adam.lotus.plugin.views.TopicView.createPartControl(TopicView.java:609) I have added the path to Path env var, and also registered the dll to no avail. My env is Ms vista profesional, java1.5, eclipse3.4 (and lotus 8) Anyone out there have a clue? Many thanks in advance.

• XML Table layout? Two EQUAL-width rows filled with equally width buttons??

  Hi heres a part from my XML for LAND format: <TableLayout android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_gravity="center" android:stretchColumns="*"> <TableRow> <Button android:id="@+id/countbutton" android:text="@string/plus1"/> <Button android:id="@+id/resetbutton" android:text="@string/reset" /> </TableRow> </TableLayout> And now what I dont get - the WIDTH of one row and also of the button depends on the TEXT inside the button. If the both texts are equaly long lets say : TEXT its ok - the table half is in the middle of the screen. But if they have different size - lets say "A" and "THIS IS THE LONG BUTTON" the CENTER of the table isnt in the middle of the screen anymore and so the buttons are not equally width... • Programmer productivity by programming language?

  In code complete, there's a nice table listing how productive a programmer is depending on language. Jeff Atwood has a nice blog post about it. This chart is at least 4 years old by now. I'm curious: have there been any more recent studies done on this? (insert standard anti-flamewar boilerplate here... we're all adults) Update: I appreciate everyone's opinions on the subject and whether or not this is a relevant question or not. But that's not really what I'm asking for. I'm wanting any studies on the subject. I'm inclined to agree with most of the opinions posted thus far, but I'd like to see if there's any research to back that up. And I'm also aware that choice of programming language is a complicated subject that depends on other factors like developer familiarity. To me, this is all the more reason to have these kinds of discussions backed by research. Also, thanks for the link, Robert Gamble.

  Regarding data validation, I've heard that the options are to "fail fast, fail early" or "complete validation". The first approach fails on the very first validation error, whereas the second one builds up a list of failures and presents it. I'm wondering about this in the context of both server-side and client-side data validation. Which method is appropriate in what context, and why? My personal preference for data-validation on the client-side is the second method which informs the user of all failing constraints. I'm not informed enough to have an opinion about the server-side, although I would imagine it depends on the business logic involved.

• Struts and logging HTTP POST request body

  I'm trying to log the raw body of HTTP POST requests in our application based on Struts, running on Tomcat 6. I've found one previous post on SO that was somewhat helpful, but the accepted solution doesn't work properly in my case. The problem is, I want to log the POST body only in certain cases, and let Struts parse the parameters from the body after logging. Currently, in the Filter I wrote I can read and log the body from the HttpServletRequestWrapper object, but after that Struts can't find any parameters to parse, so the DispatchAction call (which depends on one of the parameters from the request) fails. I did some digging through Struts and Tomcat source code, and found that it doesn't matter if I store the POST body into a byte array, and expose a Stream and a Reader based on that array; when the parameters need to get parsed, Tomcat's Request object accesses its internal InputStream, which has already been read by that time. Does anyone have an idea how to implement this kind of logging correctly?

  Hello, I just cannot for the life of me get my nant build file to terminate upon a test failure and return (thus preventing the packaging and artifact step from running) This is the unit part of the nant file: <target name="unittest" depends="build"> <nunit2 verbose="true" haltonfailure="false" failonerror="true" failonfailureatend="true"> <formatter type="Xml" /> <test assemblyname="Code\AppMonApiTests\bin\Release\AppMonApiTests.dll" /> </nunit2> </target> And regardless what combination of true/false i set the haltonfailure, failonerror, failonfailureatend properties to, the result is always this: [11:15:09]: Some tests has failed in C:\Build\TeamCity\buildAgent\work\ba5b94566a814a34\Code\AppMonApiTests\bin\Release\AppMonApiTests.dll, tests run terminated. [11:15:09]: NUnit Launcher exited with code: 1 [11:15:09]: Exit code 0 will be returned.1 Please help as i don't want to be publishing binarys where the unit tests have failed!!!
