  • best way to go about cost-benefit analysis on hardware

    I'm looking to build a low-end computational server (my jargon in this field is especially limited so if someone can state that better please change that to meet jargon). I'm basically running computational fluid dynamics programs, large matrix computations and bioinformatics code. What would be the best way to approach cost/benefit analysis on what to put in the system? Perhaps even more general: How does one approach cost/benefit analysis on hardware theoretically (doing the analysis before building the machine)?

  • No Option to Burn ISO on Windows 7

    From what I hear, Windows 7 is able to burn ISO files natively. I should be able to right-click on a given ISO and choose "Burn disk image", but I do not have that option on any ISO I try. I am assuming that I fudged the associations somehow. Can you help me get back on track?

  • I have a dead laptop, what are my options?

    After having my previous question answered by the HP technical support, I now have a HP laptop that does not work properly. HP recommended that I replace the motherboard and processor for a bargain price of $733 US dollars. I originally purchased this laptop back when the Windows Vista was released back in January 2007 for about $2,000 US dollar, but now is an very expensive paperweight. What are my options for this laptop? Do I try to revive it on my own.... What are your suggestions?

  • Suggestions for wireless adapter

    I recently purchased a desktop computer and it did not come with a wireless network card. I am currently using the Belkin Wireless G USB Adapter and it is a very sub par product. It has very slow response times and download speeds with just basic browsing and downloads podcasts through iTunes. Does anyone have a better suggestion for a wireless adapter? Should I go with another USB adapter or one that connects directly into the motherboard? I am current using Windows Vista 64 bit Home Premium.

  • What is the difference between /sbin/nologin and /bin/false?

    I have often heard it recommended that a user account should be disabled by setting its shell to /bin/false. But, on my existing Linux systems, I see that a great number of existing accounts (all of them service accounts) have a shell of /sbin/nologin instead. I see from the man page that /sbin/nologin prints a message to the user saying the account is disabled, and then exits. Presumably /bin/false would not print anything. I also see that /sbin/nologin is listed in /etc/shells, while /bin/false is not. The man page says that FTP will disable access for users with a shell not listed in /etc/shells and implies that other programs may do the same. Does that mean that somebody could FTP in with an account that has /sbin/nologin as its shell? What is the difference here? Which one of these should I use to disable a user account, and in what circumstances? What other effects does a listing in /etc/shells have?

  • 3 Monitors 2 different graphic cards

    I am looking to add a third monitor to my workstation. I currently have 2 monitors connected to a geforce gt 120. I am wanting to find the cheapest solution on adding another monitor, I have a old ati x300 laying around and wanting to know if I would be able to use that to power the other monitor and if it would conflict with my other graphic card (I am not a gamer). What I want to do is have the at x300 power 1 monitor via dvi and the gt 120 power 2 monitors via vga and dvi. Thanks edit: im running windows 7 64bit

  • All commands stopped working in centos 6.5

    I have made a big mistake while removing some duplicate packages as it appears to be broken. yum 1036 rpm -e --nodeps glibc-2.12-1.132.el6_5.2.x86_64 1037 rpm -e --nodeps nscd-2.12-1.132.el6_5.2.x86_64 1038 rpm -e --nodeps glibc-common-2.12-1.132.el6_5.2.x86_64 1040 rpm -e --nodeps glibc-common-2.12-1.132.el6.x86_64 glibc-devel-2.12-1.132.el6.x86_64 glibc-headers-2.12-1.132.el6.x86_64 1041 rpm -e glibc.x86_64 1042 rpm -e --nodeps glibc.x86_64 The issue happened after doing 1042 step. None of commands work(including yum, rpm, ls, cp etc) and getting error /lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2: bad ELF interpreter: No such file or directory I thought that installing glibc after removing all the current ones would help to resolve the duplicate package error :( Now I realised that it is used as the C library in the GNU system and most systems with the Linux kernel. It defines the "system calls" and other basic facilities such as open, malloc, printf, exit, etc. Is there any possible solutions other than reinstall? I have lost ssh access. Maybe anything can be done using rescue cd? Thanks

  • Apache on Win32: Slow Transfers of single, static files in HTTP, fast in HTTPS

    I have a weird problem with Apache 2.2.15 on Windows 2000 Server SP4. Basically, I am trying to serve larger static files, images, videos etc. The download seems to be capped at around 550kB/s even over 100Mbit LAN. I tried other protocols (FTP/FTPS/FTP+ES/SCP/SMB), and they are all in the multi-megabyte range. The strangest thing is that, when using Apache with HTTPS instead of HTTP, it serves very fast, around 2.7MByte/s! I also tried the AnalogX SimpleWWW server just to test the plain HTTP speed of it, and it gave me a healthy 3.3Mbyte/s. I am at a total loss here. I searched the web, and tried to change the following Apache configuration directives in httpd.conf, one at a time, mostly to no avail at all: SendBufferSize 1048576 #(tried multiples of that too, up to 100Mbytes) EnableSendfile Off #(minor performance boost) EnableMMAP Off Win32DisableAcceptEx HostnameLookups Off #(default) I also tried to tune the following registry parameters, setting their values to 4194304 in decimal (they are REG_DWORD), and rebooting afterwards: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\AFD\Parameters\DefaultReceiveWindow HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\AFD\Parameters\DefaultSendWindow Additionally, I tried to install mod_bw, which sets the event timer precision to 1ms, and allows for bandwidth throttling. According to some people it boosts static file serving performance when set to unlimited bandwidth for everybody. Unfortunately, it did nothing for me. So: AnalogX HTTP: 3300kB/s Gene6 FTPD, plain: 3500kB/s Gene6 FTPD, Implicit and Explicit SSL, AES256 Cipher: 1800-2000kB/s freeSSHD: 1100kB/s SMB shared folder: about 3000kB/s Apache HTTP, plain: 550kB/s Apache HTTPS: 2700kB/s Clients that were used in the bandwidth testing: Internet Explorer 8 (HTTP, HTTPS) Firefox 8 (HTTP, HTTPS) Chrome 13 (HTTP, HTTPS) Opera 11.60 (HTTP, HTTPS) wget under CygWin (HTTP, HTTPS) FileZilla (FTP, FTPS, FTP+ES, SFTP) Windows Explorer (SMB) Generally, transfer speeds are not too high, but that's because the server machine is an old quad Pentium Pro 200MHz machine with 2GB RAM. However, I would like Apache to serve at at least 2Mbyte/s instead of 550kB/s, and that already works with HTTPS easily, so I fail to see why plain HTTP is so crippled. I am using a Kerio Winroute Firewall, but no Throttling and no special filters peeking into HTTP traffic, just the plain Firewall functionality for blocking/allowing connections. The Apache error.log (Loglevel info) shows no warnings, no errors. Also nothing strange to be seen in access.log. I have already stripped down my httpd.conf to the bare minimum just to make sure nothing is interfering, but that didn't help either. If you have any idea, help would be greatly appreciated, since I am totally out of ideas! Thanks! Edit: I have now tried a newer Apache 2.2.21 to see if it makes any difference. However, the behaviour is exactly the same. Edit 2: KM01 has requested a sniff on the HTTP headers, so here comes the LiveHTTPHeaders output (an extension to Firefox). The Output is generated on downloading a single file called "elephantsdream_source.264", which is an H.264/AVC elementary video stream under an Open Source license. I have taken the freedom to edit the URL, removing folders and changing the actual servers domain name to www.mydomain.com.     I'm trying to setup a single website (domain) that contains both a front end Wordpress installation and a single directory Ruby on Rails application. I can get either one to work successfully on their own, but can't sort out the configuration that would let me coexist. [asterisk-iptables] enabled = true filter = asterisk action = iptables-allports[name=ASTERISK, protocol=all] sendmail-whois[name=ASTERISK, [email protected], [email protected]] logpath = /var/log/asterisk/messages maxretry = 5 bantime = 259200 Removing the sendmail-whois stops it, but it also stops the ban notifications, how can I get it to stop notifying me when the process starts/stops?   • Can a BIND server be a slave to a non-BIND master DNS server?

    If I have a master DNS that is not bind - can bind still slave to it? (ie does it use the DNS protocol or something else?). Kind of related - but do people still do this or do they use some other form of data replication to keep DNS records in sync to the slaves (ie file/database copying)? I would like to have the slaves refreshed as fast as possible so I am thinking normal slaving with is expiry/poll based might not be optimal?

  • Recover data from physically damaged harddrive. What are my options?

    I was trying to replace the power supply in my desktop PC and ended up physically damaging the data connection from the hard drive to the motherboard. The plastic shelf for the copper prongs on the hard drive broke into the cable. Here is a picture of my handy work: I went to Best Buy Geek Squad to discuss my options and they said that they will need to send it to the recover center it could cost anywhere between $250 to $1600 USD to recover the data out the hard drive Is this reasonable for data recovery from a physically damaged hard drive? Are there any other options I can explore? I am going to talk to the data doctors to see what my options are. Update I took the HD to Data Doctors, and they told me that the SATA connection was broken to they would need to replaced the data connector and then copy the data to a brand new hard drive. So, with the initial analysis, cost of replacement parts, and data recovery fee it came out to $865.00 USD. The technician specifically stated if this was an older hard drive that would just need to replace the data connector. But because there is specific information related to the individual hard drive in the flash ROM, they need to transfer the data to a brand new hard drive.

  • Vim - Displaying Code Output in a New Window á la Textmate?

    A few months back I switched from Textmate to Vim. Overall I really love Vim, but one of the things I miss from Textmate is using the ⌘R command to run Ruby code and having the results neatly pop up in a new, scrollable window. Obviously, Vim is capable of running Ruby code and displaying the output with :w !ruby. The only downside to this is that if the resulting output is too long I can't scroll through it. To combat this problem I tried modifying a :redir function from Vim Tips. It looks like this: function! TabNew(cmd) redir => message silent execute a:cmd redir END tabnew silent put=message set nomodified endfunction command! -nargs=+ -complete=command TabNew call TabNew(<q-args>) Now the output from Ruby is put into a new tab. However, I can't get it to pop up in a new, separate window. Changing tabnew to new just sends the output to a split in the same window. The other problem is that a visible ^M gets appended to the end of each line, so the output ends up looking like this, which is kind of bothersome: Hello World!^M So, is there any way to get the output into a separate window without the ^M appended to the end? Are there any plugins I should be trying to achieve this Textmate-like effect for code output?

They both provide very nice trending, alerting, and reporting capabilities for my *nix boxes, and I need to find something similar for Windows. Can anyone out there recommend such a tool? It is important that this tool is a centralized service in line with the aforementioned products, as the deployment environment is owned by a lean team with limited resources. Thanks!

  • I can access \\server via explorer but a program wont

    From ServerA I can access \\ServerB\Telephony\Files\abcdefgh.pdf using windows explorer. From the same ServerA when I try to access the same file on ServerB using a program (a program that imports files from csv file) I get "File Not Found" error. On \\ServerB\Telephony\ the Share is on and I added the service account that I used to log in to ServerA. I am clueless. Please suggest. (oh, it's a Windows 2008 R2 Server) (btw, I did try IP Address, FQDN but works with Explorer but CVS Importer wont read the path. At one time, I did get Access Denied but I dont get access denied anymore after adding the service account to the share. firewalls are off on the servers) Update: I go to My Computer Network I see many servers but ServerB is not in the list..

  • Is it Possible to Increase Display Resolution for OS X Maverick

    The new OS X Maverick operating system has reduced maximum display resolution from 1920 x 1200 in Mountain Lion to 1680 x 1050, which is a SIZABLE reduction. The difference is obvious when viewing videos or photos. In addition, the colors are less vibrant. Does anyone know a way to change the display resolution for Maverick, thus restoring Mountain Lion resolution (1920 x 1200)...along with color vibrancy. By the way, I am using a 2012 Macbook Pro, with Matte display, which I think makes matters worse. At 1920 x 1200 my Macbook Pro was excellent...but at 1680 x 1050, it is very pedestrian.

  • Convert PowerPoint to Flash or Silverlight?

    I have a simple PowerPoint presentation and I would like to convert it to Flash or Silverlight. The presentation is a simple "Slide after Slide after Slide" and my first guess was to use OpenOffice Impress. Sadly, the picture quality is awful. I would need the presentation to be in a specific format (900 Pixels wide and as high as it needs to be, usually 675 pixels) Can you recommend any good, simple PowerPoint = Flash or Silverlight converter that does that?

  • Lookup Active Directory entry by implicit UPN

    In our company exists a forest-wide UPN suffix company.com and almost all user accounts have the explicit UPN set to [email protected]. This value is also set in the Active Directory userPrincipalName attribute. Now we have an application where users perform authentication through Kerberos. So we are given the Kerberos principal, i.e. implicit UPN. We'd like to look up that user and retrieve several LDAP attributes. Since iUPN and userPrincipalName do not match anymore, the lookup is not possible. Is there any "official" way to retrieve a mapping from the Active Direcory? My workaround is to perform a LDAP bind against the realm component and search for the sAMAccountName attribute which matches the user id component of the iUPN. Searching for the mere sAMAccountName in the forest is not possible because the value is unique in the domain only.
