• Fix bad superblock on logical partition

  I was following http://www.howtoforge.com/linux_resi...xt3_partitions and when i reboot and run: root@Microknoppix:/home/knoppix# fsck -n /dev/sda7 fsck from util-linux-ng 2.17.2 e2fsck 1.41.12 (17-May-2010) fsck.ext2: Superblock invalid, trying backup blocks... fsck.ext2: Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/sda7 The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2 filesystem. • Arch Linux: eth0 no carrier - network fails at boot

  The problem My computer is connected to a network where dhcp is required. So my network configuration in /etc/rc.conf looks like interface=eth0 address= netmask= broadcast= gateway= My deamons are DAEMONS=(!hwclock syslog-ng network netfs crond ntpd) With this configuration, Arch hangs at boot a long time at "Network" (Still it says "[done]", but after boot I have no connection). I found out two workaround: Workaround 1 remove network from deamons run mii-tool --reset eth0 and dhcpcd eth0 after boot (somehow it does not work when placing these commands in /etc/rc.local. Then dhcp work very quickly (because of the reset!). Before executing the first command, ip link show eth0 has "NO CARRIER" in output. Afterwards, it doesn´t. (Also, mii-tool first shows "no link", afterwards eth0: 10 Mbit, half duplex, link ok. Workaround 2 Change network configuration to interface=eth0 address=x.y.z.21 netmask=255.255.255.0 broadcast=xxx.y.z.255 gateway=x.y.z.254 whereas x, y, z build the specific adresses of the network (Though dhcp is used, I get a static ip). Add the commands mii-tool --reset eth0 and dhcpcd eth0 to /etc/rc.local Now network starts quickly at boot (though I don´t know if successfully), the commands in /etc/rc.local are executed and the connection is fine after login. What to do? So the problem seems to be that dhcpcd stucks at "wating for carrier" or sth. I do not like the workaround, because some deamons need network (though they seem to start). What can I do to have eth0 ready for dhcp at boot? Or is there another problem?

• logrotate deletes all maillogs older than one day

• Input/output error reading USB backup drive on CentOS 6.4

Or more to the point, what problem does this indicate? /var/log/messages said this: Oct 21 14:57:54 g5 kernel: EXT4-fs error (device sda1): ext4_journal_start_sb: Detected aborted journal Oct 21 14:57:54 g5 kernel: EXT4-fs (sda1): Remounting filesystem read-only But...read-only is something different than 'throw an io error'... After unmounting to try fsck on it, I had someone on-site look at it, and the drive was not spun up, and had a slow-flashing light, which I believe means it was in a power-suspend mode. So I had them unplug and replug the USB cable, and now (before remounting) it says: fsck from util-linux-ng 2.17.2 e2fsck 1.41.12 (17-May-2010) /dev/sda1: clean, 2805106/61046784 files, 181934167/244182016 blocks I then mount it and now ls works and df reports: Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sda1 917G 680G 191G 79% /mnt/backup What would cause it to go into such a state without being asked to? Why all the weird behaviour, and now it appears to not be corrupt?

• Position:absolute

  I have I have a div called logo. I want the logo to be on top of other areas and to overlap into the the preface top of a drupal site, the logo currently sits in the header area. I looked up position absolute and I think that what I need to use but when I use position absolute the logo disappears, I can see it if I use position fixed, relative etc. I thought the logo was being hidden because I was not using a z-index but even with that I cant see the logo. Just a plain user - no special privileges. On CLIENT: I run the following from a command prompt winrm get wmi/root/cimv2/Win32_UTCTime -r:SOURCE -u:normal -p:NormalPassword I get an output containing WSManFault: Message = Access is denied. On CLIENT: I repeat step 3 with the administrator identity, i.e. winrm get wmi/root/cimv2/Win32_UTCTime -r:SOURCE -u:Administrator -p:AdminPassword I get the current UTC time at SOURCE. The question is, what are the least privileges I need to assign to the user 'normal' to ensure that Step 3 behaves like Step 5. In other words, what's the least privilege to enable WinRM access for a non-Admin account?

  I have a Netgear N750 as my main router, which connects to the internet via a modem. I have a second Netgear N750 which I want to use to repeat the wireless signal of the main router. I logged in to routerlogin of my main router (192.168.1.1) and set up the "Wireless Repeating Function". I set it as the "Wireless Base Station" and filled in the MAC adress of my second Netgear N750. Then I logged in to routerlogn of my second router and set it up as the "Wireless Repeater", I gave it the IP 192.168.1.11 and filled in the MAC adress of the base station. During the setup of the second router (Repeater) I had to disable all security functions. If I connect to the repeaters' WLAN signal, I get no internet connection. Maybe you can help me, thanks

• Are spurious TCP connections on port 53 a problem?

  I run a server which amongst other things uses tinydns for DNS and axfrdns for handling transfer requests from our secondary DNS (another system). I understand that tinydns uses port 53 on UDP and axfrdns uses port 53 on TCP. I've configured axfrdns to only allow connections from my agreed secondary host. I run logcheck to monitor my logs and every day I see spurious connections on port 53 (TCP) from seemingly random hosts. They usually turn out to be from ADSL connections. My question is; are these innocent requests or a security risk? I am happy to block repeat offenders using iptables but don't want to block innocent users of one of the websites I host. • How to fix skipping/stuttering audio in Google Chrome

  If I play Google Music, or a Youtube video in the Chrome browser, and then open a new tab and start typing the address bar, the audio will quickly cut in and out as I am typing (with almost every letter I type). It also is choppy if I play the video and start typing in the start menu. I can not repeat this behavior using internet explorer. Based on that Im thinking that it maybe a problem with the version of flash Chrome is using but I'm not sure. Any ideas? Im running 32 bit windows 7, i.e. 9, and chrome 23.0 pc is a lenovo t43p. I have the latest sound drivers. i.e. is using flash 11.5.502. chrome is using : Adobe Flash Player - Version: 11.5.31.2 Only one (this) plugin is listed for flash in the chrome plugins list.

  I have a Pavilion dv4 notebook running Windows 7 64bit Enterprise edition. This morning I started to notice some really strange behavior in how it handled its built-in keyboard. At random intervals there will be a long delay in key presses, to which some keys will never show and other keys will continue to repeat until you hit the backspace. Other keys get mapped incorrectly to other keys. If I hook up an external keyboard the problem does not appear. Before I reformat the machine and do a fresh install, I thought I would check here to see if anyone has experienced this same issue and if so, how did you fix it?

• Windows Update can't install Windows Vista SP1

  If you install Windows Vista RTM and run Windows Update, many updates are offered and will successfully install. Once all other updates are installed, Windows Vista service pack 1 is offered. When you attempt to install Windows Vista service pack 1, the service pack installation wizard appears, presenting the license agreement and so on. However, shortly after the installation starts the wizard disappears. Windows Update says that the update was installed successfully. However, service pack 1 is not in fact installed, and will be detected as needed again on the next update check. Repeat ad nauseum. On checking the Windows Update log, error 0x80190194 appears near the beginning of an update check, associated with the URL http://update.microsoft.com/vista/windowsupdate/redir/vistawuredir.cab. Why won't service pack 1 install properly and how do I fix it?

• Resize underlying partitions in mdadm RAID1

  I have a home built NAS, and I need to slightly reconfigure some of my drive usage. I have an mdadm RAID1 composed of two 3TB drives. Each drive has one ext3 partition that uses the entire drive. I need to shrink the ext3 partition on both drives, and add a second 8GB or so ext3 partition to one, and swap partition of equal size to the other. I think I have the steps figured out, but wanted some confirmation. Resize the mdadm RAID resize2fs /dev/md0 [size] where size is a little larger than the currently used space on the drive Remove one of the drives from the RAID mdadm /dev/md0 --fail /dev/sda1 Resize the removed drive with parted Add the new partition to the drive with parted Restore the drive to the RAID mdadm -a /dev/md0 /dev/sda1 Repeat 2-5 for the other device Resize the RAID to use the full partition mdadm --grow /dev/md0 -z max Is there anything I've missed, or haven't considered?

  If there are still downloading files (ones that will need extra 2 week or unknown time because they are rare files) but need to use a new hard drive because no space is left in hard drive, then is there a way to use new hard drive while keeping existing downloads ongoing? That's because if we change the folder in eMule from G: to H:, then all existing downloads will disappear too... Update: I can move the completed files over to the new hard drive... but it is going to be a never ending task... (old hard drive gets full... move some... and repeat)

These subdomains (a.domain.com, b.domain.com) are pointing to different IPs on different machines. # Server A a1.domain.com pointing to a.domain.com a2.domain.com pointing to a.domain.com .. aN.domain.com pointing to a.domain.com # Server B b1.domain.com pointing to b.domain.com b2.domain.com pointing to b.domain.com .. bN.domain.com pointing to b.domain.com Currently, we have to add individual CNAME entries (eg. a1... aN) against a single subdomain (a.dominan.com). We repeat the above process for every new server which is actually another subdomain (e.g. c.domain.com). Is there a way we can specify a range of CNAMEs (e.g. [a1..a25].domain.com point to a.domain.com) instead of adding separate CNAME etnries? Is there any possibility to handle this at DNS or webserver (apache or Nginx) level?

• Online OCR website for processing an entire pdf file at one time?

  I am looking for an online OCR website for processing a multi-page pdf file at one time. Free preferably. I know http://www.newocr.com/. If I am correct, it can only OCR one page at a time, by manually clicking "Preview" and then clicking "OCR" for each page. After each page is OCRed, I have to copy out the text result manually too. If my pdf file has 30~ pages, it will be tedious to repeat the above process for each page. I wonder if there is some other online websites that OCR a whole pdf file, without asking me for manual operation? Thanks!

• silent failure while creating odbc data source

  I just got really confused trying to create an ODBC data source in Windows 2003 R2. I can create a connection to my chosen server (a MS SQL Server) on the "user DSN" tab, but when I try to do the same thing on the "system DSN tab", the process fails but without an error message. I am able to connect to the target database fine at the end of configuring a new data source, but when I click OK, the data source just isn't there. No error message, no sign that anything went amiss, other than the lack of a new data source. Very annoying, as I had to repeat the process a few times to make sure I wasn't crazy. Anybody got any hints? I suspect it is a permission problem of some sort but since there is no error message, I don't know where to start.

Enter an administrator account name and password, then click OK. Choose Enable Root User from the Edit menu. is not possible, because there is no "Edit Menu" Icon! Now everyone is happy with the time, send out a notification via email of the time, ask Staff who care about when the box is going down manually add it to their calendars some stakeholders the staff doing the work Do the actual work Is there an OSS project that we could use to automate this process? My googling has been fruitless so far. Will we need to build something ourselves? Would anyone else be interested in something like this?

• Move files and resize partition automatically?

  I'm in a bit of an odd situation. I've recently been working on switching from debian to arch, and I've got my home partition for both pointing to the same partition (different usernames, so that's not an issue). What I want to do is one of two things, either: Set up user on arch with same username and group as debian, and have everything just sort of work! OR Move files I'd like to share between home folders to their own partition, and mount it with fstab. For the second one, I have around 150gb of files that would need moved to their own partition, and i've got about 15gb of free space on my home partition. So what I'd want to do is somehow make a 10gb ext4 partition, move 10gb-ish of files, expand the partition again, move files again, etc until all the files are moved to their own partition. I can do it manually, but it'd be easier if I could say "Move 10GB-ish of files from here to there, and then resize it and repeat until I'm out of files". Is that even possible?

  I have a Netgear N750 as my main router, which connects to the internet via a modem. I have a second Netgear N750 which I want to use to repeat the wireless signal of the main router. I logged in to routerlogin of my main router (192.168.1.1) and set up the "Wireless Repeating Function". I set it as the "Wireless Base Station" and filled in the MAC adress of my second Netgear N750. Then I logged in to routerlogin of my second router and set it up as the "Wireless Repeater", I gave it the IP 192.168.1.11 and filled in the MAC adress of the base station. During the setup of the second router (Repeater) I had to disable all security functions. If I connect to the repeaters' WLAN signal, I get no internet connection. Maybe you can help me, thanks

The best method we've been able to come up with so far is: Log into the machine via a separate SSH session In the console session, page to the top of the buffer Repeat: In the SSH session, run "cat /dev/vcs >> screendump.txt" In the console session, page down one screen Dump the final screen in the SSH session Is there a better way? It seems like if the VC memory were contiguous and you knew where it was you could use dd to pull the console text directly out of kernel memory and into a file.

The content of the folder and its subfolder is identical to the "normal" single slash root. The double slash does not go away when I access its subfolders.
