    Like any other Apple product, OS X prides itself on the little details. When, earlier last week, I used my professor's Mac briefly to give a quick project presentation (mine decided to do a chkdsk at the wrong time, heh), I got the distinct feeling some were put intentionally to make the uninitiated look stupid. What are the small usability details that Windows and Linux users will trip on when their Mac using friend lend them their beloved Mac for some quick web browsing?

    Hi, I have a small home network with the router capable of running OpenWRT, is there some utility or firewall rule, which can be used to Wake On LAN on request. What I think - if I want to access my media centre (using for example SSH or HTTP) and it is suspended, is it possible to catch the ICMP packet (saying the machine is offline) and send the WOL packet to wakeup the machine and resend the SSH or HTTP request? I am thinking of an equivalent of Sysinternals Process Explorer for Firefox or something like top or htop, on a page, script and addon basis. More technically oriented, something I can see and hand over to the script designers or Mozilla and say "see what this doing to my browsing experience!!"

  • web services access not being reached thru the web browser [closed]

    I am trying to reference my .asmx webservices in .NET but my server is not exposed to the internet. When I put on the following address I get the message mentioned below. What's the reason for not being able to see the directory? Am I missing something in my IIS configuraction? Am I missing anything in my permissions? Just as reference I have other folders with webservices and I have the same issue. When I login to the server I am doing it with my windows user and password (I am using windows authentication). It's necessary to mention that when I put the URL I am getting a popup screen to put in my userid and password but it seems that's not able to validate since keeps asking me a couple of times.     I installed MinGW by using mingw-get-inst-20111118.exe and it works but it is very slow! i don't want to install it online, i remember that i have previously installed MinGW and msys by using two files mingw.exe and msys.exe without using the internet and it was great, but now i cant repeat what i have done and i cant find a link to mingw.exe! please i want a simple steps for offline better installation? thanks

  • Windows 7: Some time my mouse got "virtually" unplugged and plugged again in some seconds.

    So guys, sometime when i am browsing or doing other stuff it's like windows unplugs my usb-logitech-mouse. it than get riconnected again in few seconds. I tihnk this is happening after I had to install virtual machines (like: virtualbox and vmware) I already disinstalled them but this issue is still here. When this happens even the lights on my mouse are off same behaviour as like somone unplagged it. What could i do?

    i have problem when i am trying to save web page from browser using "Save as Webpage, complete" some of CSS/Javascript/Image are not saved, thus when i reopen saved page offline webpage can't display properly. How do i solve this? How do i made webpage can be saved properly from browser ? i don't want to use MHT ext.   • WinSCP clobbers permission & group on replace

    Is there a way to tell winscp to keep the group and permission of my upload file? I am tired of modifying webpages/webapp binaries and needing to change the group to www-data so the server can read them. If not what app might i use instead? I mostly use winscp for the easy of copy/pasting files onto my linux server and the ease of browsing the filesystem (can go between 2+ folders in a second, no typos)

  • WinDirStat Save Report Option

    When running WinDirStat against a drive, I'd like the option to save the report so that I can look at it later while "offline" away from the system it was run on. I've looked around the program and can't see this option. Am I missing something, can this be done with WinDirStat? If it can't be done, is there a way similar to WinDirStat that will allow me to save the results of a drive space scan to delve into them at a later date?

  • VMWare/Ubuntu development stack with symlink to Windows 7

    I would like to use a vm ubuntu installation as my testing environment, but to ease workflow, I have symlinked /var/www to a windows share. Everything looks good when browsing files and the owner and group both are showing up as www-data, but I can not seem to get apache to respond with anything other than permission denied. Obviously there are still some permission issues between Windows 7 and Ubuntu, but I don't know where to go

  • Make thunderbird store all mail locally for IMAP accounts but not indexing all for search

    In Thunderbird the global gloda search is connected to the selection of downloaded/syncronized folders of the IMAP accounts in the Offline-settings. Is it possible somehow, that Thunderbirds download/syncs all emails in the IMAP account but does not add them to the index for the global search? I would like to do this because I have some accounts that I only keep in thunderbird for archiving reasons but I don't want to find those mails, when I use the global search

  • Using ssd intensively. Should we worry?

    I'm currently using conventional HDDs like the 5200 rpms, browsing a lot, my folder and files are scattered, torrenting always and I'm not fond of optimization like disabling cache, cleaning temp Files , etc. My question is, given the above conditions (no disable of cache, seeding always in torrent, downloading torrent) is it safe to use SSD? I'm pretty worried about cycles but I read an article wherein it says its safe since it will usually wear out for 10 years given that you always write heavily and continuously. Thanks

    I have a CentOS 6.2 server. Whenever some one logs into the server using the terminal (SSH) the user profile (.bash_profile) is loaded. Now my question is, is there a profile that loads whenever you use SFTP to login into the server via "FTP browsing software" ( I use WinSCP ), I want to send an email whenever a user logs into the server via SFTP. I already have the code to do this when a user logs into the terminal (SSH) when his profile loads. Thanks

  • Windows 7 Home Premium or better on a Netbook?

    I have a Netbook with Windows XP Home. Processor is an Atom N280 (1.66 GHz) with 2 GB of RAM. I noticed that newer Netbooks come with Windows 7, but as Starter Edition (which kinda sucks). I wonder if there is a technical reason for using Windows 7 Starter? Or would a better edition (x86) perform equally well? I'm currently considering Home Premium, but BitLocker and Offline Files might have me get Ultimate.

    While connected to a VPN (SwissVPN service), a content filter at a site I'm working at blocked a web page. This was perplexing, since the local site's filter should not be able to see my traffic, right? So I assume my web browsing activity was not going through the VPN tunnel. How can I configure the OS to send ALL traffic though the currently connected VPN tunnel? I'm using OSX Lion and Windows 7. Thanks!

    Hi, I was just wondering if it was possible to protect a directory with a username/password combination using .htaccess and .htpasswd files, but not protect the files within. i.e. One is able to link, say, images within that directory to friends, but browsing the directory itself would not be allowed without a username/password.
