• How to disambiguate subdirs with the same name in the Projects list?

  My Qt project has 2 subdirs/subprojects with the same name. Their directories are myproject/node and myproject/compiler/test/node. The problem (or annoyance) is that, in the Projects list in Qt, both subdirs are listed as "node". So you have to open them up to figure out which is which. myproject.pro is like this: TEMPLATE = subdirs QMAKE_CLEAN = Makefile SUBDIRS += \ compiler_test_node \ node \ ... compiler_test_node.subdir = compiler/test/node node.depends = compiler_vuo_compile ... Without renaming the myproject/compiler/test/node directory, is there a way to make it show up with a different name in the Projects list?

  I've recently been looking at the Enthought distro of iPython. Today I decided to see if I could get some Qt GUI progs running and was successful after making minor changes. Simple example: import sys from PySide import QtGui # was 'from PyQT4 import QtGui' # app = QtGui.QApplication(sys.argv) -- not needed win = QtGui.QWidget() win.resize(320, 240) win.setWindowTitle("Hello MIT 6X!") win.show() sys.exit() # was 'sys.exit(app.exec_())' But I would like to be able to pass sys.argv in some cases. Most example code I see is in the form of the commented out 'app = ' line above. If I include it, I get 'RuntimeError: A QApplication instance already exists.' • exposing subcontrols from the custom widget plugin in QT

  I am using QT 4.3. I have created one custom widget plugin. I could be able to show it in the desiner tool box as well as use it on the form with no problem. This custom widget internally holds QGroupBox, QLabel, QTextEdit. Now I want to apply the styles to individual componets of this custom widget. I want to expose these internal conrols as sub-control and style them. This would be similar to tear subcontrol of QTabWidget. In style sheet we can refer it as QTabWidget::tear... Is there any way by which I can do similar thing with my custom widget?

• Diagramming Software for a Developer/Designer

  For a long time I've been looking for a good diagramming/vector-based drawing program that meets my needs as a developer. I'd like to: Draw database diagrams Draw flow charts Draw object-modeling diagrams (UML being the standard) Draw other free-form diagrams (basically boxes & arrows with the occasional clipart) Draw mockups of user interfaces and web pages EDIT: I want good-looking electronic-format diagrams that I can show to 3rd parties, not just something for my own internal use. EDIT 2: I'm also looking for Windows software, although I'm toying with the idea of switching to Mac, so a really good Mac-only product might get me to switch. Basically I need a good vector graphic program (with decent grouping, connecting lines, and ideally auto-routing). I'd prefer a diagramming tool that can also be used for drawing (for the UI mockups) rather than a drawing tool that can also be used for diagrams. I've tried Visio on several occasions, and every time I've been disappointed. The interface always seems to get in my way at some point. It's pretty close to what I want, and the latest version (I got the trail from MS) seems to be better than previous ones in terms of usability, but I really don't want to plunk down that sort of cash for a mediocre product. I've tried Dia and Inkscape, and while initially promising and with the right price tag, I found both of them to be lacking in several ways (including some recurring bugs). I've toyed with getting Adobe Illustrator, but I've never used it before, and I have a feeling that it wouldn't handle the diagramming aspect very well, and I don't want to buy a copy just to find out it doesn't meet my needs. So far, the product that I've had the most success with is, sadly, OpenOffice Draw. It's free of course (which lowers my expectations and thus improves my view of it) and its usability is pretty good, but in the end I'd like something more suited to diagramming. I'm willing to spend real money (in the $500-$1K range) for a really good piece of software if it does everything I want it to. The front runner is of course Visio but I'm hoping for more. Does anybody have any recommendations? CONCLUSION: @dlamblin had the most informative post, but the part I gained the most from was his/her (and others) mention of OmniGraffle, not Gliffy. I gave Gliffy a try, and it seemed neet for occational use, but since it's a Flash app (note: not AJAX as dlamblin mentioned) it's still a bit of a pain to use (no keyboard shortcuts for copy/paste was pretty much a deal breaker for me). I also tried SmartDraw, but it had 3-strikes-you're-out against it: The trial period was only 7 days long. It used some nonstandard (and visually jarring) GUI widget toolkit for its UI. At the very least it makes me suspicious (how do I know it will actually work & support the standard Windows features?) It crashed on me early into my trial. OmniGraffle looks like exactly what I want... except that it's Mac-only (so I couldn't give it a try). However, it got good reviews from my Mac-owning coworker, and I hope to try it on a friend's Mac soon. If it's good enough then I might spring for a new MacBook.

• Visual Studio 2010 HTML Designer Renders Unlike IE8?

  My question is: since Visual Studio 2010 was only just released, why does it not render pages in the same way as the latest Microsoft web browser, IE8? Is there a bunch of render options I should be setting? I thought Expression Web was supposed to help with its fancy Super Preview but that app doesn't even open VS solutions. • Visual Studio 2008 Report Designer - can't turn on gridlines

  Microsoft in their infinite wisdom have seen fit to remove the useful "Draw Grid" and "Snap to Grid" checkboxes in the report properties dialog that were in VS 2005 but are not in VS 2008. I'm assuming they put that functionality elsewhere but I can't find it after going through what seems like every menu option available. Does anybody know how to turn on the gridlines?

I want to copy/paste a ton of controls without them being called Checkbox1 etc. I'd rather rename them manually since its only a small change to the name.

The labels that it tries to assign the values to are however, null. Is this an ASP.net lifecycle issue that I'm not understanding? My understanding based on the Microsoft ASP.net lifecycle page was that page controls were available after the Page_Initialization. What is the proper way to do this? Is there a better way?

  I have a SharePoint list I converted to XSLT to do some additional grouping and counting and percentages. I need to return the number of items = true within my nodeset, I have: <xsl:value-of select="count($nodeset/@PartnerArrivedAtCall)"/> (which returns the count of all the nodes) I have tried <xsl:value-of select="count($nodeset/@PartnerArrivedAtCall [@PartnerArrivedAtCall = 'Yes'])"/> (returns zero) and <xsl:variable name="ArrivedYes" select="$nodeset/@PartnerArrivedAtCall [@PartnerArrivedAtCall='Yes']"/> (also returns zero) Can you please give me a good example of how to count only the true values (in my XML, true = "Yes") Thanks!

  In an ActionScript 2 project I can create a new MovieClip, right-click on it on the library and select "Component Definition" to add parameters that can be referenced inside the MovieClip. This parameters can be easily changed in the MovieClips's properties. Now, I'm working on an ActionScript 3 project but haven't been able to figure out a way to obtain the values passed in those parameters. I defined a parameter named "textToDisplay" but when I write the following in the Actions for the first frame I get an error: trace(textToDisplay); This is the error: 1120: Access of undefined property textToDisplay. • How to be a better software designer

  I feel as if I am a hack programmer. I do things over and over again until they finally work. I copy/paste code. I don't think about why something makes sense, if it works I go with it. I have my undergraduate in computer science, and I've done this the entire time. Somehow I made it through the degree by doing this and now I'm in my second year of programming professionally and I am still able to do this and get away with it. Here's the thing, I don't want to be this way anymore. I am not proud of the work I do, I feel like I'm just a copy/paste programmer. How do I become better? I want to be able to design something on my own without copying code. Have you ever been in this situation, if so how did you move beyond it to become a better programmer? • Ignore designer and generated files in Resharper analysis

  I've been using Resharper for a few days and I really like this tool, but there's one thing that annoys me about it and I wonder if it can be changed. I'm getting lots of issue notifications from generated code (almost 1400 in my project). I'd want to set those files as ignored so they won't be checked as you can do with StyleCop and CodeAnalysis. Unfortunatelly it looks like Resharper ignores Generated Code settings from it's options because I'm still getting the same notifications. I've tried setting a file mask (i.e. for *.resx) and add files manually to generated, but still it doesn't change anything. I don't know if it matters but I'm using VS 2010.

• How to play an .mp3 using QBuffer with Phonon in a PyQt Qt environment

  With the code I have right now I CAN play .mp3 data from files succesfully. However I need to play the same data using a QtCore.QBuffer (NOT from a file). When I use the example of the docs it errors an unexpected type of QBuffer! However...... that is what it SHOULD see, according to the docs. But............... it throws: TypeError: Phonon.MediaObject.setCurrentSource(Phonon.MediaSource): argument 1 has unexpected type 'QBuffer' The code I use is (1): someBuffer = QtCore.QBuffer() someBuffer.writeData(TrackData) mediaObject.setCurrentSource(someBuffer) I also tried (2): someBuffer = QtCore.QBuffer() mediaObject.setCurrentSource(someBuffer) someBuffer.writeData(TrackData) and (3): someBuffer = QtCore.QBuffer() someBuffer.writeData(TrackData) mediaObject.setCurrentSource(Phonon.MediaSource(someBuffer)) The last example (3) throws an different ERROR and wipes my Gui off screen ;-) ASSERT: "d-connected" in file /builddir/build/BUILD/phonon-4.5.1/phonon/streaminterface.cpp, line xxxx Notes: TrackData contains the mp3 data and IS PLAYING OK when I write it to a File and use that as a resource to mediaObject.setCurrentSource(Phonon.MediaSource())I also experimented with a QByteArray but that leads to the same "unexpected QBuffer" error. To be more precise everything I feed setCurrentSource is not accepted. Tried a string (errors an unexpected type of String), tried a QBuffer (errors an unexpected type of QBuffer), tried a QByteArray (errors an unexpected type of QByteArray). BTW: I run Qt, PyQt on Linux. Any ideas??
