First Day of Data Integration Track at Oracle OpenWorld 2012

OpenWorld started full speed for us today with a great set of sessions in the Data Integration track. After the exciting keynote session on Oracle Database 12c in the morning; Brad Adelberg, VP of Development for Data Integration products, presented Oracle’s data integration product strategy. His session highlighted the new requirements for data integration to achieve pervasive and continuous access to trusted data. The new requirements and product focus areas presented in this session are: Provide access to any data at any source On premise or on cloud Enable zero downtime operations and maximum performance Leverage real-time data for accurate business insights And ensure high quality data is used across the enterprise During the session Brad walked over how Oracle’s data integration products, Oracle Data Integrator, Oracle GoldenGate, Oracle Enterprise Data Quality, and Oracle Data Service Integrator, deliver on these requirements and how recent product releases build on this strategy. Soon after Brad’s session we heard from a panel of Oracle GoldenGate customers, St. Jude Medical, Equifax, and Bank of America, how they achieved zero downtime operations using Oracle GoldenGate. The panel presented different use cases of GoldenGate, from Active-Active replication to offloading reporting. Especially St. Jude Medical’s implementation, which involves the alert management system for patients that use their pacemakers, reminded me in some cases downtime of mission-critical systems can be a matter of life or death. It is very comforting to hear that GoldenGate delivers highly-reliable continuous availability for life-saving medical systems. In the afternoon, Nick Wagner from the Product Management team and I followed the customer panel with the review of Oracle GoldenGate 11gR2’s New Features. Many questions we received from audience were about GoldenGate’s new Integrated Capture for Oracle Database and the enhanced Conflict Management features, as well as how GoldenGate compares to Oracle Streams. In addition to giving details on GoldenGate’s unique capability to capture changed data with a direct integration to the Oracle DBMS engine, we reminded the audience that enhancements to Oracle GoldenGate will continue, while Streams will be primarily maintained. Last but not least, Tim Garrod and Ryan Fonnett from Raymond James presented a unified real-time data integration solution using Oracle Data Integrator and GoldenGate for their operational data store (ODS). The ODS supports application services across the enterprise and providing timely data is a critical requirement. In this solution, Oracle GoldenGate does the log-based change data capture for Oracle Data Integrator’s near real-time data integration between heterogeneous systems. As Raymond James’ ODS supports mission-critical services for their advisors, the project team had to set up this integration environment to be highly available. During the session, Ryan and Tim explained how they use ODI to enable automated process execution and “always-on” integration processes. Their presentation included 2 demonstrations that focused on CDC patterns deployed with ODI and the automated multi-instance execution and monitoring. We are very grateful to Tim and Ryan for their very-well prepared presentation at OpenWorld this year. Day 2 (Tuesday) will be also a busy day in our track. So You Want to Be a Social Media Director

Do you want to be a Social Media Director? Some say the title is already losing its relevance; that social should be a basic skill that is required and used no matter what your position is inside the enterprise. I suppose that’s visionary, and a fun thing for thought leaders to say. But in the vast majority of business organizations, we’re so far away from that reality that the thought of not having someone driving social’s implementation and guiding its proper usage conjures up images of anarchy. That said, social media has become so broad, so catch-all, and so extended across business functions, that today’s Social Media Director, depending on the size of their staff, must make jacks-of-all-trades look like one-trick-ponies. Just as the purview of the CMO has grown all-encompassing, the disciplines required of their heads of social are stacking up. Master of Content Every social pipeline you build must stay filled, with quantity and quality. Content takes time, and the job never stops. Never. And no, it’s not true that anybody can write. Master of Customer Experience You must have a passion for hearing from customers and making them really happy. Master of PR You must know how to communicate and leverage the trust you’ve built when crises strike. Couldn’t hurt to be a Master of Politics. Master of Social Technology So many social management tools on the market. You have to know what social tech ecosystem makes sense and avoid piecemeal point solutions. Master of Business Development Social for selling and prospecting is hot, and you have to know how to use social to do it. Master of Analytics Nothing else matters if you can’t prove social is helping the brand. That’s right, creative content guy has to also be a math and stats geek. Good luck with that. Master of Paid Media You’ve got to learn the language, learn the tactics, learn the vendors and learn how to measure results. Master of Education Guess who gets to teach everyone who has no clue how to use social for business. Master of Personal Likability You’ll be leading the voice, tone, image and personality of the brand. If you don’t instinctively know how to be liked by actual people, the brand will be starting from a deficit. How deep must you go in this parade of masteries? Again, that depends on your employer’s maturity level in social. Serious players recognize these as distinct disciplines requiring true experts for maximum effect. Less serious players will need you to execute personally in many of these areas. Do the best you can, and try to grow quickly at each. If you’re the sole person executing all social…well…you’re in the game of managing expectations and trying to socially educate your employer. The good news is, you should be making a certifiable killing. If you’re alone and your salary is modest, time to understand how many brands out there crave what you’ve mastered. Oracle GoldenGate Active-Active Part 1

My name is Nick Wagner, and I'm a recent addition to the Oracle Maximum Availability Architecture (MAA) product management team. I've spent the last 15+ years working on database replication products, and I've spent the last 10 years working on the Oracle GoldenGate product. So most of my posting will probably be focused on OGG. One question that comes up all the time is around active-active replication with Oracle GoldenGate. How do I know if my application is a good fit for active-active replication with GoldenGate? To answer that, it really comes down to how you plan on handling conflict resolution. I will delve into topology and deployment in a later blog, but here is a simple architecture: The two most common resolution routines are host based resolution and timestamp based resolution. Host based resolution is used less often, but works with the fewest application changes. Think of it like this: any transactions from SystemA always take precedence over any transactions from SystemB. If there is a conflict on SystemB, then the record from SystemA will overwrite it. If there is a conflict on SystemA, then it will be ignored. It is quite a bit less restrictive, and in most cases, as long as all the tables have primary keys, host based resolution will work just fine. Timestamp based resolution, on the other hand, is a little trickier. In this case, you can decide which record is overwritten based on timestamps. For example, does the older record get overwritten with the newer record? Or vice-versa? This method not only requires primary keys on every table, but it also requires every table to have a timestamp/date column that is updated each time a record is inserted or updated on the table. Most homegrown applications can always be customized to include these requirements, but it's a little more difficult with 3rd party applications, and might even be impossible for large ERP type applications. If your database has these features - whether it’s primary keys for host based resolution, or primary keys and timestamp columns for timestamp based resolution - then your application could be a great candidate for active-active replication. But table structure is not the only requirement. The other consideration applies when there is a conflict; i.e., do I need to perform any notification or track down the user that had their data overwritten? In most cases, I don't think it's necessary, but if it is required, OGG can always create an exceptions table that contains all of the overwritten transactions so that people can be notified. It's a bit of extra work to implement this type of option, but if the business requires it, then it can be done. Unless someone is constantly monitoring this exception table or has an automated process in dealing with exceptions, there will be a delay in getting a response back to the end user. Ideally, when setting up active-active resolution we can include some simple procedural steps or configuration options that can reduce, or in some cases eliminate the potential for conflicts. This makes the whole implementation that much easier and foolproof. And I'll cover these in my next blog.

Jquery UI Slider - Input a Value and Slider Move to Location

I was wondering if anyone has found a solution or example to actually populating the input box of a slider and having it slide to the appropriate position onBlur() .. Currently, as we all know, it just updates this value with the position you are at. So in some regards, I am trying to reverse the functionality of this amazing slider. One link I found: http://www.webdeveloper.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-177578.html is a bit outdated, but looks like they made an attempt. However, the links to the results do not exist. I am hoping that there may be a solution out there. I know Filament has re-engineered the slider to handle select (drop down) values, and it works flawlessly.. So the goal would be to do the same, but with an input text box. Any help would be incredible! Thanks in Advance!! Robert

Has anyone been able to have this display correctly? In addition, HTML strings of text can be imported into the report from a database or other source. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Programmer productivity by programming language?

In code complete, there's a nice table listing how productive a programmer is depending on language. Jeff Atwood has a nice blog post about it. This chart is at least 4 years old by now. I'm curious: have there been any more recent studies done on this? (insert standard anti-flamewar boilerplate here... we're all adults) Update: I appreciate everyone's opinions on the subject and whether or not this is a relevant question or not. But that's not really what I'm asking for. I'm wanting any studies on the subject. I'm inclined to agree with most of the opinions posted thus far, but I'd like to see if there's any research to back that up. And I'm also aware that choice of programming language is a complicated subject that depends on other factors like developer familiarity. To me, this is all the more reason to have these kinds of discussions backed by research. Also, thanks for the link, Robert Gamble.

How do I hide an inherited __published property in the derived class in a VCL component?

I have created a new VCL component based on an existing VCL component. What I want to do now is set the Password and Username properties from an ini file instead of the property inspector. Robert Dunn Link I read on the delphi forum above you cannot unpublish a property and that the only workaround is to redeclare the property as read-only. I tried this but it all it does is make the property read only and grayed out in the object inspector. While this could work I would prefer if the property wasn't visible at all. __property System::UnicodeString Password = {read=FPassword}; Thanks in advance for any help or links to c++ VCL component writing tutorials. AS3 - Event listener that only fires once

I'm looking for a way to add an EventListener which will automatically removes itself after the first time it fires, but I can't figure a way of doing this the way I want to. Any help would be greatly apprecitated. (I know that Robert Penner's Signals can do this, but I can't use them since it would mean a lot of code rewriting that I can't afford for my current project)

How to add texture to fill colors in ggplot2?

I'm currently using scale_brewer for fill and these look beautiful in color (on screen and via color printer) but print relatively uniformly as greys when using a black and white printer. I searched the online ggplot2 documentation but didn't see anything about adding textures to fill colors. Is there an official ggplot2 way to do this or does anyone have a hack that they use? By textures I mean things like diagonal bars, reverse diagonal bars, dot patterns, etc that would differentiate fill colors when printed in black and white. Thanks for thoughts! Robert

FTS: Searching across multiple fields 'intelligently'

Hi, I have a SP using FTS (Full Text Search). I want searches across multiple fields, 'intelligently' ranking results based on the weights I assign. Consider a search on a view fetching data from tables: Book, Author and Genre. Now, I want the searcher to be able to do: "Ludlum Fiction", "Robert Ludlum Bourne", "Bourne Ludlum", etc. Unfortunately, the only way I have been able to do that at present is this: http://pastebin.com/fdce11ff This is pretty bad, because I am manually breaking up the search string. I know I am doing this completely the wrong way, but can't figure out the right way to search across multiple fields in FTS. Can somebody help please?

How to use Event notification in Solaris 10 when a directory change

I read the following page: Robert Benson's article on ECF developers.sun.com/solaris/articles/event_completion.html I also read the Solaris man pages but they are not very clear of how to use event notifications for directories. For example, If I add a new file into a directory, I would like to get some notification of that event. I found this link: blogs.sun.com/praks/entry/file_events_notification Which has what I need but it is for Solaris 11 ( which is not in the market yet). lock file so that it cannot be deleted

I'm working with two independent c/c++ applications on Windows where one of them constantly updates an image on disk (from a webcam) and the other reads that image for processing. This works fine and dandy 99.99% of the time, but every once in a while the reader app is in the middle of reading the image when the writer deletes it to refresh it with a new one. The obvious solution to me seems to be to have the reader put some sort of a lock on the file so that the writer can see that it can't delete it and thus spin-lock on it until it can delete and update. Is there anyway to do this? Or is there another simple design pattern I can use to get the same sort of constant image refreshing between two programs? Thanks, -Robert

stored procedure to find value in 2 columns out of 3

I am putting in the samle date and i am supposed to do something similar what i am asking. I want to run a query that would pull values in any two columns out 3 if it has a 1 or if any one column has a 1 it will return just those results. However it should search all three columns and in any of the three columns where it found value as 1 it should return that result. Can anyone please help me with this. Thanks in advance. F# books question

I am now reading Foundations of F# by Robert Pickering and parallelly the book in progress 'Real World Functional Programming' by Tomas Petricek. My question is, what is the added value I would get from buying and reading the following books: 1) Expert F# by Don Syme and others 2) F# for Scientists by John Harrop Are those books still up to date with the current CTP version. What are things to keep notice of with respect to the recent changes in the language? Will there be reprinted updated versions? Also I want to learn more about datamining techniques with F# as a tool for this. What are good books to read next on this topic?

My page was attacked via xss, but on ftp all files are not changed?

Hi, yesterday i noticed that sometimes on my webpage shows up javascript errors. when i went to source code, i found that one of .js files was totaly replaced with a ton of porn links. i checked the ftp for this file, but there was just old javascript file without any changes. yet i go back to check source code via browser and indeed there was again original .js today i visited my webpage again and the problem repeated. first visit showed me ton of porn pages cached .js file was hacked but after clearing browser cache js go back to oryginal i checked all files on my ftp against my offilne version, but all files are without any change. in last few years i was attacked by xss few times but in every case it was easy to diagnose and fix. but now i spend 12h and didnt find infection. do you have any idea how to find it? the webpage is: http://robert.frk.pl

How to build the ViewModel in MVVM not to violate the Single Responsibility Principle?

Robert Martin says: "There should never be more than one reason for a class to change". Let's consider the ViewModel class which is bound to a View. It is possible (or even probable) that the ViewModel consists of properties that are not really related to each other. For small views the ViewModel may be quite coherent, but while the application gets more complex the ViewModel will expose data that will be subject to change for different and unrelated reasons. Should we worry about the SRP principle in the case of ViewModel class or not?

StringBuilder/StringBuffer vs. "+" Operator

I'm reading "Better, Faster, Lighter Java" (by Bruce Tate and Justin Gehtland) and am familiar with the readability requirements in agile type teams, such as what Robert Martin discusses in his clean coding books. On the team I'm on now, I've been told explicitly not to use the "+" operator because it creates extra (and unnecessary) string objects during runtime. But this article: http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/java/library/j-jtp01274.html Written back in '04 talks about how object allocation is about 10 machine instructions. (essentially free) It also talks about how the GC also helps to reduce costs in this environment. What is the actual performance tradeoffs between using "+," "StringBuilder," or "StringBuffer?" (In my case it is StringBuffer only as we are limited to Java 1.4.2.) StringBuffer to me results in ugly, less readable code, as a couple of examples in Tate's book demonstrates. And StringBuffer is thread-synchronized which seems to have its own costs that outweigh the "danger" in using the "+" operator. Thoughts/Opinions?

Google Social Graph API, working as intended?

Hey, I'm experiencing some problems with Google's social graph API. It seems that for some parameters passed to 'otherme' nothing is returned. I'll use Robert Scoble's profiles as an example (as he's a guy sure to be everywhere on the web). If I query: http://socialgraph.apis.google.com/otherme?q=http://twitter.com/scobleizer&pretty=1 I get results, as expected. However, if I query: http://socialgraph.apis.google.com/otherme?q=http://delicious.com/scobleizer&pretty=1 Nothing is returned, even though 'http://delicious.com/scobleizer' is listed in the previous results... Any thoughts? Thanks

How do I get Firefox to launch Visio when I click on a linked .vsd file?

On our intranet site, we have various MS Office documents linked. When I click on a Word, Excel or PowerPoint file, Firefox gives me the option to Open, Save or Cancel. When I click on Open, the appropriate app is launched and the file is loaded. This is perfect. But for some reason, when I click on a linked Visio file, I only get the option to Save, which is inconvenient. I know that Firefox knows the linked file is a Visio file because it tells me so in the dialog box: "You have chosen to open example.vsd which is a: Microsoft Visio Drawing". How can I make Firefox launch Visio when I click on a linked Visio file? Update: Firefox is not launching Visio when I click on a linked Visio file because the web server does not identify the content-type correctly. It identifies the Visio file as application/octet-stream instead of application/x-visio. (Thanks Grant Wagner.) This explains why it doesn't work. And in my case, I may be able to get the Apache config file changed, but this is not certain. However, I would love to know if there is a way to configure Firefox itself to launch Visio based on some other criteria, like file name extension. This way I can open Visio files even if I don't have access to the Apache configuration.
