  • How can I make a Twitter style alert stick to the top of the window?

    - by Robert Robb
There is an excellent code example on how to make nice jQuery Twitter style alerts here: http://blog.codecrate.com/2009/10/twitter-style-alerts-in-rails.html $(function () { var alert = $('.alert'); if (alert.length > 0) { alert.show().animate({height: alert.outerHeight()}, 200); window.setTimeout(function() { alert.slideUp(); }, 3000); } }); However, one thing that the code doesn't include is functions to stick the alert div to the top of the window, no matter how far down the page the user has scrolled. I have found a few examples but nothing seems to play nice with this existing code. Any ideas?

  • javascript on twitter to prevent embedding the html page.

    - by Reginald
This is the javascript that you can find in www.twitter.com (just click to see the source code) I have just reformatted it for clarity: if (window.top !== window.self) { document.write = ""; window.top.location = window.self.location; setTimeout(function() { document.body.innerHTML = ''; }, 1); window.self.onload = function(evt) { document.body.innerHTML = ''; }; } now I understand this trick is to prevent other sites to wrap twitter in other iframes. but what I want to ask is do we really need all of this code ? what's the need of setting a function to execute in 1 millisecond, one to execute at 'onload' and one now. is that paranoia or is it really worth ? Many THanks in advance Reg

  • Shoes and Gems and how to get them working.

    - by Pselus
I have seen this question asked all over the internet and answered in many different ways. None of them seem to be working for me. I am trying to get Gems to work in Shoes (specifically the gem Mechanize). Whenever I use the code: Shoes.setup do gem 'mechanize' end require 'mechanize' It gives me the popup that says it is installing native extensions and sits at that screen for 30 minutes and longer (I've only ever waited as long as 30 minutes). I have seen people say that you should be putting the .gem files in ~/.shoes/+gem/gem (on OS X) but that hasn't worked for me. Neither has putting the source code for the gem there. On another odd note, both the gems RedCloth and Nokogiri come with Shoes...but using the above code for them gets me No such file to load errors for both of them. Anyone have any expertise in this area and can help me out?

  • How does one receive and post text messages on a website, a la Twitter?

    - by Jason
I've looked around at pretty much all the SMS posts here on SO and the best answer I've come up with so far is ZeepMobile. The only problem is, they're "in beta" and aren't readily accepting users. Is there a workaround for this, maybe receiving an email via text (kind of like how TwitPic does it?) somehow and parsing it? Basically all I want to do is have people text the site so that their message posts... I don't need to send any messages (actually I would prefer not to). Pretty much the same functionality as Twitter (same functionality, but no I'm not building a Twitter-esque service because I am not crazy). PS this will be a VB.NET ASP.NET 3.5 solution. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks

  • Share on Facebook, Retweet, etc, buttons in straight Ruby gem?

    - by Alexandre
Notice those buttons atop http://techcrunch.com/2010/04/04/he-even-makes-coldplay-sound-fun/ for sharing the url on social networks? I want to do something very very similar for a site I'm building. ShareThis offers a widget that does the same thing but it's branded and external. I'm looking for a pure Ruby solution. A gem containing a module that could be included in a Rails ApplicationHelper class would be perfect. Suggestions appreciated before I go reinventing the wheel!

  • Why doesn't this code using the ruby-mbox gem parse mbox files?

    - by cartoonfox
I installed ruby-mbox by doing gem install ruby-mbox Running this: #!/usr/bin/ruby require 'rubygems' require 'mbox' m = IO.read('test.eml') puts m.size m = Mbox.new(m) puts m produces this: 71309505 /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/ruby-mbox-0.0.2/lib/mbox/mbox.rb:45:in `initialize': uninitialized constant Mbox::StringIO (NameError) from r.rb:7:in `new' from r.rb:7 I have proved that "m" is assigned a string containing the contents of the file, just before Mbox.new(m) is called. It looks as though the Mbox::StringIO should have been defined by hasn't been. What's going wrong here? • How to Style Custom Recaptcha Widget Using Ambethia Ruby Gem?

    - by cotopaxi
I'm not sure how to go about styling a custom theme Recaptcha widget using http://github.com/ambethia/recaptcha I want to resize the widget to fit in a form in a sidebar. If I do <%= recaptcha_tags :display => {:theme => 'custom', :custom_theme_widget => 'recaptcha_widget'} %> and add <div id="recaptcha_widget"> <div id="recaptcha_image"></div> <input type="text" id="recaptcha_response_field" name="recaptcha_response_field" /> </div> as per http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1715575/recaptcha-form-customization I only get the response input field, and an error message in the source attribute of the img tag src="http://optim.coral.cs.cmu.edu/error/TypeError_Result_of_expression___recaptcha_response_field__null_is_not_an_object_" Has anyone found a good way to custom theme the Recaptcha widget using the Ambethia gem?

  • Social Targeting: This One's Just for You

    - by Mike Stiles
Think of social targeting in terms of the archery competition we just saw in the Olympics. If someone loaded up 5 arrows and shot them straight up into the air all at once, hoping some would land near the target, the world would have united in laughter. But sadly for hysterical YouTube video viewing, that’s not what happened. The archers sought to maximize every arrow by zeroing in on the spot that would bring them the most points. Marketers have always sought to do the same. But they can only work with the tools that are available. A firm grasp of the desired target does little good if the ad products aren’t there to deliver that target. On the social side, both Facebook and Twitter have taken steps to enhance targeting for marketers. And why not? As the demand to monetize only goes up, they’re quite motivated to leverage and deliver their incredible user bases in ways that make economic sense for advertisers. You could target keywords on Twitter with promoted accounts, and get promoted tweets into search. They would surface for your followers and some users that Twitter thought were like them. Now you can go beyond keywords and target Twitter users based on 350 interests in 25 categories. How does a user wind up in one of these categories? Twitter looks at that user’s tweets, they look at whom they follow, and they run data through some sort of Twitter secret sauce. The result is, you have a much clearer shot at Twitter users who are most likely to welcome and be responsive to your tweets. And beyond the 350 interests, you can also create custom segments that find users who resemble followers of whatever Twitter handle you give it. That means you can now use boring tweets to sell like a madman, right? Not quite. This ad product is still quality-based, meaning if you’re not putting out tweets that lead to interest and thus, engagement, that tweet will earn a low quality score and wind up costing you more under Twitter’s auction system to maintain. That means, as the old knight in “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” cautions, “choose wisely” when targeting based on these interests and categories to make sure your interests truly do line up with theirs. On the Facebook side, they’re rolling out ad targeting that uses email addresses, phone numbers, game and app developers’ user ID’s, and eventually addresses for you bigger brands. Why? Because you marketers asked for it. Here you were with this amazing customer list but no way to reach those same customers should they be on Facebook. Now you can find and communicate with customers you gathered outside of social, and use Facebook to do it. Fair to say such users are a sensible target and will be responsive to your message since they’ve already bought something from you. And no you’re not giving your customer info to Facebook. They’ll use something called “hashing” to make sure you don’t see Facebook user data (beyond email, phone number, address, or user ID), and Facebook can’t see your customer data. The end result, social becomes far more workable and more valuable to marketers when it delivers on the promise that made it so exciting in the first place. That promise is the ability to move past casting wide nets to the masses and toward concentrating marketing dollars efficiently on the targets most likely to yield results.

  • Ruby ICalendar Gem: How to get e-mail reminders working.

    - by Jenny
I'm trying to work out how to use the icalendar ruby gem, found at: http://icalendar.rubyforge.org/ According to their tutorial, you do something like: cal.event.do # ...other event properties alarm do action "EMAIL" description "This is an event reminder" # email body (required) summary "Alarm notification" # email subject (required) attendees %w(mailto:[email protected] mailto:[email protected]) # one or more email recipients (required) add_attendee "mailto:[email protected]" remove_attendee "mailto:[email protected]" trigger "-PT15M" # 15 minutes before add_attach "ftp://host.com/novo-procs/felizano.exe", {"FMTTYPE" => "application/binary"} # email attachments (optional) end alarm do action "DISPLAY" # This line isn't necessary, it's the default summary "Alarm notification" trigger "-P1DT0H0M0S" # 1 day before end alarm do action "AUDIO" trigger "-PT15M" add_attach "Basso", {"VALUE" => ["URI"]} # only one attach allowed (optional) end So, I am doing something similar in my code. def schedule_event puts "Scheduling an event for " + self.title + " at " + self.start_time start = self.start_time endt = self.start_time title = self.title desc = self.description chan = self.channel.name # Create a calendar with an event (standard method) cal = Calendar.new cal.event do dtstart Program.convertToDate(start) dtend Program.convertToDate(endt) summary "Want to watch" + title + "on: " + chan + " at: " + start description desc klass "PRIVATE" alarm do action "EMAIL" description desc # email body (required) summary "Want to watch" + title + "on: " + chan + " at: " + start # email subject (required) attendees %w(mailto:[email protected]) # one or more email recipients (required) trigger "-PT25M" # 25 minutes before end end However, I never see any e-mail sent to my account... I have even tried hard coding the start times to be Time.now, and sending them out 0 minutes before, but no luck... Am I doing something glaringly wrong?

  • Has any one used client_side_validations gem with Chosen.js dropdown?

    - by Abid
I am using chosen.js (http://harvesthq.github.com/chosen/). I was wondering if anyone has been able to use chosen select boxes and client_side_validations together. The issue is that when we use chosen it hides the original select element and renders its own dropdown instead, and when we focus out the validation isn't called and also when the validation message is shown it is shown with the original select element so positioning of the error isnt also correct. What could be a good way to handle this, My be we can change some code inside ActionView::Base.field_error_proc which currently looks something like ActionView::Base.field_error_proc = Proc.new do |html_tag, instance| unless html_tag =~ /^<label/ %{<div class="field_with_errors">#{html_tag}<label for="#{instance.send(:tag_id)}" class="message">#{instance.error_message.first}</label></div>}.html_safe else %{<div class="field_with_errors">#{html_tag}</div>}.html_safe end end Any ideas ? Edit 1: I have the following solution that is working for me now. applied a class "chzn-dropdown" to all my selects that were being displayed by chosen used the following callback provided by client_side_validations Gem clientSideValidations.callbacks.element.fail = function(element, message, callback) { if (element.data('valid') !== false) { if(element.hasClass('dropdown')){ chzn_element = $('#'+element.attr('id')+'_chzn'); console.log(chzn_element); chzn_element.append(""+message+""); } else{ callback(); } } } Thanks

If it matters, I'm running ruby 1.9.2dev (2010-04-30 trunk 27557) [i686-linux] require 'bcrypt' # bcrypt-ruby gem, version 2.1.2 @long_string_1 = 'f287ed6548e91475d06688b481ae8612fa060b2d402fdde8f79b7d0181d6a27d8feede46b833ecd9633b10824259ebac13b077efb7c24563fce0000670834215' @long_string_2 = 'f6ebeea9b99bcae4340670360674482773a12fd5ef5e94c7db0a42800813d2587063b70660294736fded10217d80ce7d3b27c568a1237e2ca1fecbf40be5eab8' def salted(string) @long_string_1 + string + @long_string_2 end encrypted_password = BCrypt::Password.create(salted('password'), :cost => 10) puts encrypted_password #=> $2a$10$kNMF/ku6VEAfLFEZKJ.ZC.zcMYUzvOQ6Dzi6ZX1UIVPUh5zr53yEu password = BCrypt::Password.new(encrypted_password) puts password.is_password?(salted('password')) #=> true puts password.is_password?(salted('passward')) #=> true puts password.is_password?(salted('75747373')) #=> true puts password.is_password?(salted('passwor')) #=> false At first I thought that once the passwords got to a certain length, the dissimilarities would just be lost in all the hashing, and only if they were very dissimilar (i.e. a different length) would they be recognized as different. That didn't seem very plausible to me, from what I know of hash functions, but I didn't see a better explanation. Then, I tried shortening each of the long_strings to see where BCrypt would start being able to tell them apart, and I found that if I shortened each of the long strings to 100 characters or so, the final attempt ('passwor') would start returning true as well. So now I don't know what to think. What's the explanation for this?

  • Running Webrat with Selenium

    - by yuval
I set up Cucumber+Webrat+Selenium according to this article. Whenever I run my server, though, I keep getting: ERROR Server Exception: sessionId should not be null; has this session been started yet? • RubyGems installation errors both when using 'sudo' and not using sudo

    - by Kenny Peng
I have a machine that is running Ubuntu Hardy, which provides its own RubyGems package. Unfortunately that version of RubyGems (1.1.1) is too old to do anything useful with, so I decided to manually update RubyGems to the current version (1.3.6). That part went smoothly, and if I do gem -v, I get 1.3.6 which is expected. The problem is when I try to do: sudo gem install rack, it returns this error: ERROR: While executing gem ... (Errno::EACCES) Permission denied - /home/username/.gem Usually when I install gems as root, it knows to install it into /usr/lib/ruby/gems, so why is it checking my home directory at all? Another quirk is when I do gem install rack (not as root), it says: ERROR: While executing gem ... (Gem::FilePermissionError) You don't have write permissions into the /usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8 directory. which is where I want it to go. I've already tried clearing source_caches, trying different versions of RubyGems (1.3.5), forcing installation into /usr/lib with -i to no avail. Any ideas on why RubyGems is so insistent on checking my /home directory when installing as root?

  • failed to connect to any given host:port - RoR Error?

    - by Sam Hursey
Hi all I'm very new to Ruby on Rails so please go easy! I've uploaded the whole application to the server (Dreamhost) and gone through the steps. But when I try to run it I get the following error: failed to connect to any given host:port (Mongo::ConnectionFailure) I have installed the Mongo gem; but maybe I haven't got it configured correctly? I know you can't use localhost for describing where a Dreamhost mysql database is; might it be something like that? These are the first five lines of the backtrace if that helps?: /home/user/.gem/ruby/1.8/gems/mongo-0.19.1/lib/../lib/mongo/connection.rb 440 in `connect_to_master' 1 /home/user/.gem/ruby/1.8/gems/mongo-0.19.1/lib/../lib/mongo/connection.rb 131 in `initialize' 2 /home/user/.gem/ruby/1.8/gems/magent-0.3/lib/magent.rb 19 in `new' 3 /home/user/.gem/ruby/1.8/gems/magent-0.3/lib/magent.rb 19 in `connection' 4 /home/user/.gem/ruby/1.8/gems/magent-0.3/lib/magent.rb 27 in `database=' 5 /home/user/.gem/ruby/1.8/gems/magent-0.3/lib/magent.rb 35 Any help much appreciated and apologies for my n00bishness! • Resolving NameErrors -- Getting NameError on RAILS_END in rails_end.rb When using desert plugin and

    - by dr
What's an effective approach to debug NameErrors in Rails? I'm trying to use the desert plugin (0.5.0) and the edge version of Community_Engine. I've started from scratch and gone through the installation instructions. When I attempt to start my server, I get this error: "Constant RAILS_END from rails_end.rb not found (NameError)". Problem is I cannot find rails_end.rb, nor can I find a google reference to this file or error. I've verified that the required gems are installed and current. I've dug around google and desert, but haven't found any reference to this constant. Any ideas?
