• How is it that the abstract class XmlWriter can be instantiated using XmlWriter.Create(... ?

  Hi, Just looking to clarify my understanding of the workings of the XmlWriter and abstract classes in general. My thinking is (was) that an abstract class can not be instantiated, although it can contain base methods that can be used by an inheriting class. So, while investigating XmlWriter, I find that to instantiate the XmlWriter, you call XmlWriter.Create(.... , which returns an instance of... XmlWriter, which can then be used: FileStream fs = new FileStream("XML.xml", FileMode.Create); XmlWriter w = XmlWriter.Create(fs); XmlSerializer xmlSlr = new XmlSerializer(typeof(TestClass)); xmlSlr.Serialize(fs, tsIn); This clearly works, as tested. Can anyone help me understand what is going on here. As far as I can see there is or should be no 'instance' to work with here??

• OutOfMemoryError calling XmlSerializer.Deserialize() - not related to XML size!

  This is a really crazy bug. The following is throwing an OutOfMemoryException, for XML snippits that are very short (e.g., <ABC def='123'/>) of one type, but not for others of the same size but a different type: (e.g., <ZYX qpr='baz'/>). public static T DeserializeXmlNode<T>(XmlNode node) { try { return (T)new XmlSerializer(typeof(T)) .Deserialize(new XmlNodeReader(node)); } catch (Exception ex) { throw; // just for catching a breakpoint. } } I read in this MSDN article that if I were using XmlSerializer with additional parameters in the constructor, I'd end up generating un-cached serializer assemblies every it got called, causing an Assembly Leak. But I'm not using additional parameters in the constructor. It also happens on the first call, too, so the AppDomain is fresh. Worse yet, it is only thrown in release builds, not debug builds. What gives?

• .NET SettingsProvider/ApplicationSettingsBase caching

  I'm looking at some code that uses the .NET System.Configuration.SettingsProvider and ApplicationSettingsBase to handle configuration. We have a class that derives from SettingsProvider that uses a database as the data store, and then we have other settings classes that inherit from ApplicationSettingsBase, and have the [SettingsProvider(typeof(MySettingsProvider))] attribute. The problem is that we're using these settings classes in multiple applications, but they seem to permanently cache the configuration values, the first time they are loaded. The issue is that if a setting is changed in one application, the other applications will not get the setting until the next restart, because they are cached everywhere. My question is: is there a way to force the SettingsProvider implementation, or the classes derived from ApplicationSettingsBase to not cache values, and re-query the datastore every time the setting is accessed? A valid answer might be that these classes were not intended to be used in multi-application environments...

  I use $.(ajax) function extensively in my app to call ASP.net web services. I would like to write a wrapper in order to centralize all the ajax calls. I found few simple solutions, but none address an issue of passing parameters to delegates, for example, if i have: $.ajax({ type: "POST", url: "http://localhost/TemplateWebService/TemplateWebService/Service.asmx/GetFoobar", data: jsonText, contentType: "application/json; charset=utf-8", dataType: "json", success: function(response) { var results = (typeof response.d) == 'string' ? eval('(' + response.d + ')') : response.d; OnSuccess(results, someOtherParam1, someOtherParam2); }, error: function(xhr, status, error) { OnError(); } }); The wrapper to this call would have to have the way to pass someOtherParam1, someOtherParam2 to the OnSuccess delegate...Aside from packing the variables into a generic array, I can't think of other solutions. How did you guys address this issue?

  Hello, I'm trying to serialize a very large IEnumerable<MyObject> using an XmlSerializer without keeping all the objects in memory. The IEnumerable<MyObject> is actually lazy.. I'm looking for a streaming solution that will: Take an object from the IEnumerable<MyObject> Serialize it to the underlying stream using the standard serialization (I don't want to handcraft the XML here!) Discard the in memory data and move to the next I'm trying with this code: using (var writer = new StreamWriter(filePath)) { var xmlSerializer = new XmlSerializer(typeof(MyObject)); foreach (var myObject in myObjectsIEnumerable) { xmlSerializer.Serialize(writer, myObject); } } but I'm getting multiple XML headers and I cannot specify a root tag <MyObjects> so my XML is invalid. It's not terribly desirable to have the Salt known at compile time. The current strategy is to locate the Salt value in the web.config.   Hello, Let's say I've a class myClass which has few properties, such as property1, property2, perperty3, etc. Now, I'd like to populate an array with each of those properties so that, I can access each of them through its index. Is there an automatic way of doing so?   I am using a Custom Attribute to define how a class's members are mapped to properties for posting as a form post (Payment Gateway). I have the custom attribute working just fine, and am able to get the attribute by "name", but would like to get the attribute by the member itself. For example: getFieldName("name"); vs getFieldName(obj.Name); The plan is to write a method to serialize the class with members into a postable string.   I am writing a library that generates derived classes of abstract classes dynamically at runtime. The constructor of the derived class needs a MethodInfo of the base class constructor so that it can invoke it. However, for some reason Type.GetConstructor() returns null. For example: abstract class Test { public abstract void F(); } public static void Main(string[] args) { ConstructorInfo constructor = typeof(Test).GetConstructor( BindingFlags.NonPublic | BindingFlags.Public, null, System.Type.EmptyTypes, null); // returns null! } Note that GetConstructor returns null even if I explicitly declare a constructor in Test, and even if Test is not abstract.

• Attach fancybox/lightbox/idontknowbox function on an element

  I'm developing a jquery gallery, and I want to parametrize the highlighter function to support any kind of lightboxes (fancybox for example). In my defaults I did something like: $.fn.mygallery.defaults = { functionHighlighter: null } so in the code, creating the item, I'll check this property, and if it's setted to a function, I want to call it on the element: if ((typeof opt.functionHighlighter) === "function") { opt.functionHighlighter.call(link); } where link is the anchor element containing the miniature image, with href setted to the original image. In my idea, when the plugin is called, I set the function with: $("#gallery").mygallery({ functionHighlighter: $.fancybox }); but the "call" on the functionHighlighter executes directly the fancybox, that returns an empty area. What I want to emulate is the execution of link.fancybox(); that correctly builds the plugin on link. Any ideas?

• How can I programatically convert SQL data-types to .Net data-types?

  Can anyone show me a way of converting SQL Server data-types (varchar for example) to .Net data-types (String for example). I'm assuming that automatic conversion is not possible? I have an 'EntityProperty' object and would like it to have an appropriate 'Type' property (string, decimal, int32 etc), at the moment this property is just a string - 'int32' for example. A little background: I'm using SQL DMO in an internal code generation app to query a database and generate a stored procedure based DAL from the database. Being an internal app I can take quite a few shortcuts and make quite a few assumptions. To get the app working at the moment this data-type conversion is handled by a Select Case statement which just converts the types to strings and generates a set of properties based on these strings but I would prefer a little more flexibility in being able to handle the types (use of TypeOf etc). Anyone worked on something similar? I know EF, nHibernate, Subsonic etc could do all this for me but in this case, for various reasons, I am having to roll my own. :)

  Here's an interesting one... There is some code that I'm trying to convert from IList to IEnumerable: [Something(123)] public IEnumerable<Foo> GetAllFoos() { SetupSomething(); DataReader dr = RunSomething(); while (dr.Read()) { yield return Factory.Create(dr); } } The problem is, SetupSomething() comes from the base class and uses: Attribute.GetCustomAttribute(new StackTrace().GetFrame(1).GetMethod(), typeof(Something)) Yield ends up creating MoveNext(), MoveNext() calls SetupSomething(), and MoveNext() does not have the [Something(123)] attribute. I can't change the base class, so it appears I am forced to stay with IList or implement IEnumerable manually (and add the attribute to MoveNext()). Is there any other way to make yield work in this scenario?
