• CakePHP - hasMany not fetching?

  Maybe I am just having a slow day, but for the life of me I can't figure out why this is happening. I haven't done CakePHP in a while and I am trying to use the 1.3 version, but this doesn't seem to be working... If I run something like: $this->Building->find('all', array('recursive' => 2)); I get empty [Area] arrays for all the Buildings even though there are plenty of Areas in the OR_AREA table that are associated to buildings. Not only that, the Query Table doesn't even show CakePHP attempted to find anything but all the records in OR_BLDG. All the more puzzling, if I do: $this->Area->find('all'); I get all the Areas and the [Building] arrays are populated when appropriate. What am I missing?

  We would like to display numbers in the titles in our MediaWiki wiki. Specifically: in the table of contents numbers are shown like this: 1 Title 1.1 Subtitle 2 Another title However, on the page the titles (that map to the table of contents) appear like this: Title text Subtitle text Another title text That is, no numbers are shown. • How can I search in transcluded categories?

  I want to add functionality to a MediaWiki wiki to search in specific categories: Platform 1 Platform 2 etc. So I created a template which, based on a certain field, assigns pages to those categories. The template was already included on most of these pages. So now most pages are in either: Category:Platform 1 or Category:Platform 2 Then I thought I just need to add incategory to the search and I'm done, as described on the Wikipedia page. But then I reread it and to my horror discovered: incategory: – using the incategory: parameter returns pages in a given category (as long as the pages are directly categorized, and not transcluded through templates). Eeeek! Is there any other way to search even in transcluded templates? Or any other way of resolving this?

• Updates broke my themes/shell [Ubuntu 12.04 running Gnome 3 ]

  I am running gnome-session 3.4.2.1. After the latest updates (listed below) my theme regressed to what looks like tango - not sure. Am unable to change it using Gnome-tweak tool or the display settings. I am also unable to change the wallpaper. Here's what it looks like: Synaptic: Chromium and this is the wallpaper page even though I have selected the wallpaper, it actually does not change. This same problem occurred on my personal computer, and one other computer I have, all running the same software/config. The interesting thing is that while Gnome 3 and Unity are affected, Cinnamon is not. What I've done so far: purged and re-installed both gnome 3 and Unity- no change noted. So, how do I fix this? • Developing Schema Compare for Oracle (Part 6): 9i Query Performance

  All throughout the EAP and beta versions of Schema Compare for Oracle, our main request was support for Oracle 9i. After releasing version 1.0 with support for 10g and 11g, our next step was then to get version 1.1 of SCfO out with support for 9i. However, there were some significant problems that we had to overcome first. This post will concentrate on query execution time. When we first tested SCfO on a 9i server, after accounting for various changes to the data dictionary, we found that database registration was taking a long time. And I mean a looooooong time. The same database that on 10g or 11g would take a couple of minutes to register would be taking upwards of 30 mins on 9i. Obviously, this is not ideal, so a poke around the query execution plans was required. As an example, let's take the table population query - the one that reads ALL_TABLES and joins it with a few other dictionary views to get us back our list of tables. On 10g, this query takes 5.6 seconds. On 9i, it takes 89.47 seconds. It's also having to process far more data. What on earth could be causing this huge difference in query cost? After trawling through the '10g New Features' documentation, we found item 1.9.2.21. Before 10g, Oracle advised that you do not collect statistics on data dictionary objects. From 10g, it advised that you do collect statistics on the data dictionary; for our queries, Oracle therefore knows what sort of data is in the dictionary tables, and so can generate an efficient execution plan. On 9i, no statistics are present on the system tables, so Oracle has to use the Rule Based Optimizer, which turns most LEFT JOINs into nested loops. This drops the execution time down to 24 seconds. Not as good as 10g, but still an improvement. There are still several problems with this, however. 10g introduced a new join method - a right outer hash join (used in the first execution plan). The 9i query optimizer doesn't have this option available, so forcing a hash join means it has to hash the ALL_TABLES table, and furthermore re-hash it for every hash join in the execution plan; this could be thousands and thousands of rows. And although forcing hash joins somewhat alleviates this problem on our test systems, there's no guarantee that this will improve the execution time on customers' systems; it may even increase the time it takes (say, if all their tables are partitioned, or they've got a lot of materialized views). Ideally, we would want a solution that provides a speedup whatever the input. To try and get some ideas, we asked some oracle performance specialists to see if they had any ideas or tips. Their recommendation was to add a hidden hook into the product that allowed users to specify their own query hints, or even rewrite the queries entirely. However, we would prefer not to take that approach; as well as a lot of new infrastructure & a rewrite of the population code, it would have meant that any users of 9i would have to spend some time optimizing it to get it working on their system before they could use the product. Another approach was needed. All our population queries have a very specific pattern - a base table provides most of the information we need (ALL_TABLES for tables, or ALL_TAB_COLS for columns) and we do a left join to extra subsidiary tables that fill in gaps (for instance, ALL_PART_TABLES for partition information). All the left joins use the same set of columns to join on (typically the object owner & name), so we could re-use the hash information for each join, rather than re-hashing the same columns for every join. To allow us to do this, along with various other performance improvements that could be done for the specific query pattern we were using, we read all the tables individually and do a hash join on the client. Fortunately, this 'pure' algorithmic problem is the kind that can be very well optimized for expected real-world situations; as well as storing row data we're not using in the hash key on disk, we use very specific memory-efficient data structures to store all the information we need. This allows us to achieve a database population time that is as fast as on 10g, and even (in some situations) slightly faster, and a memory overhead of roughly 150 bytes per row of data in the result set (for schemas with 10,000 tables in that means an extra 1.4MB memory being used during population). • How do I do nested transactions in NHibernate?

  Can I do nested transactions in NHibernate, and how do I implement them? I'm using SQL Server 2008, so support is definitely in the DBMS. I find that if I try something like this: using (var outerTX = UnitOfWork.Current.BeginTransaction()) { using (var nestedTX = UnitOfWork.Current.BeginTransaction()) { ... do stuff nestedTX.Commit(); } outerTX.Commit(); } then by the time it comes to outerTX.Commit() the transaction has become inactive, and results in a ObjectDisposedException on the session AdoTransaction. Are we therefore supposed to create nested NHibernate sessions instead? Or is there some other class we should use to wrap around the transactions (I've heard of TransactionScope, but I'm not sure what that is)? I'm now using Ayende's UnitOfWork implementation (thanks Sneal). Forgive any naivety in this question, I'm still new to NHibernate. Thanks! EDIT: I've discovered that you can use TransactionScope, such as: using (var transactionScope = new TransactionScope()) { using (var tx = UnitOfWork.Current.BeginTransaction()) { ... do stuff tx.Commit(); } using (var tx = UnitOfWork.Current.BeginTransaction()) { ... do stuff tx.Commit(); } transactionScope.Commit(); } However I'm not all that excited about this, as it locks us in to using SQL Server, and also I've found that if the database is remote then you have to worry about having MSDTC enabled... one more component to go wrong. Nested transactions are so useful and easy to do in SQL that I kind of assumed NHibernate would have some way of emulating the same...

• git pull crashes after other member push something

  Here it's the story... we have a Github account. I clone the repository ... then I can work with it, commit things, push things, etc ... I use Linux with command line and git version 1.7.7.3 Then other user, using Eclipse and git plugin for eclipse eGit 1.1.0 pushes something, and it appears in the github web pages as the last commit, but when I try to pull: $ git pull remote: Counting objects: 13, done. remote: Compressing objects: 100% (6/6), done. remote: Total 9 (delta 2), reused 7 (delta 0) Unpacking objects: 100% (9/9), done. error: unable to find 3e6c5386cab0c605877f296642d5183f582964b6 fatal: object 3e6c5386cab0c605877f296642d5183f582964b6 not found "3e6c5386cab0c605877f296642d5183f582964b6" is the commit hash of the last commit, done by the other user ... there's no problem at all to browse it through web page ... but for me it's impossible to pull it. It's strange, because my command line output tells about that commit hash, so it knows that one is the last one commit in the github system, but my git can not pull it ! Maybe the git protocol used in eGit is incompatible with the console git 1.7.7.3...

• git workflow for separating commits

  Best practices with git (or any VCS for that matter) is supposed to be to have each commit do the smallest change possible. But, that doesn't match how I work at all. For example I recently I needed to add some code that checked if the version of a plugin to my system matched the versions the system supports. If not print a warning that the plugin probably requires a newer version of the system. While writing that code I decided I wanted the warnings to be colorized. I already had code that colorized error message so I edited that code. That code was in the startup module of one entry to the system. The plugin checking code was in another path that didn't use that entry point so I moved the colorization code into a separate module so both entry points could use it. On top of that, in order to test my plugin checking code works I need to go edit UI/UX code to make sure it tells the user "You need to upgrade". When all is said and done I've edited 10 files, changed dependencies, the 2 entry points are now both dependant on the colorization code, etc etc. Being lazy I'd probably just git add . && git commit -a the whole thing. Spending 10-15 minutes trying to manipulate all those changes into 3 to 6 smaller commits seems frustrating which brings up the question Are there workflows that work for you or that make this process easier? I don't think I can some how magically always modify stuff in the perfect order since I don't know that order until after I start modifying and seeing what comes up. I know I can git add --interactive etc but it seems, at least for me, kind of hard to know what I'm grabbing exactly the correct changes so that each commit is actually going to work. Also, since the changes are sitting in the current directory it doesn't seem like it would be easy to run tests on each commit to make sure it's going to work short of stashing all the changes. And then, if it were to stash and then run the tests, if I missed a few lines or accidentally added a few too many lines I have no idea how I'd easily recover from that. (as in either grab the missing lines from the stash and then put the rest back or take the few extra lines I shouldn't have grabbed and shove them into the stash for the next commit. Thoughts? Suggestions? PS: I hope this is an appropriate question. The help says development methodologies and processes

• Creating same-width hit-zones on MenuItems in ASP.NET 2.0 Menus that include MenuItems added at runt

  In an ASP.NET 2.0 application, I want to permit a user to select a MenuItem, even if the user does not click the actual text of the MenuItem, but instead only clicks the highlight area that ASP.NET places around the currently selected MenuItem (represented by the DynamicHoverStyle.BackColor property). Since the BackColor is displayed the same width for each MenuItem in a submenu, based on MenuItem with the longest text, I would like to make the hit-zone (clickable area) of each sub-MenuItem the same width (same at the BackColor area), regardless of how much text is displayed in the in each individual sub-MenuItem. Here's the setup. I am using a Menu on a MasterPage to display a similar menu on each of my pages. Some of the pages suppress this menu, and some of them add addition MenuItems, sometimes to the top level, sometimes adding sub-MenuItems to an existing top-level MenuItem, and sometimes both (adding a MenuItem to the top level and then additional MenuItems as submenuitems to that newly added top level. This menu has a horizontal orientation, and it is dynamic, in that only the top level is initially exposed, and the submenus are displayed when selected. During usability testing, we noticed that users would select a top-level menu item to expose the submenu, and then select a submenu item, but not by necessarily clicking on the submenu item text, but instead clicking on the BackColor area of the submenu item. Since the text of some MenuItems are longer than others, MenuItems with short Text have a rather large BackColor area. When the user clicks on the BackColor area, but not directly on the MenuItem Text, nothing happens, since the user didn't actually click on the submenu item hit zone. Although there are visual cues as to what part of the displayed MenuItem is clickable (the mouse pointer changes to a link cursor when the mouse is positioned on the MenuItem Text, but not when it is only hovering over the BackColor), this behavior confused the users. They highlighted a MenuItem, and clicked it, but nothing happened. I would to make clicking a MenuItem successful, even if the user did not click on the actual Text of the MenuItem, but simply click on the BackColor area. It seems like there should be a property somewhere to control the width of the active area of the displayed MenuItems, but I do not see it. Any suggestions, given that I am creating some of these MenuItems at runtime?

• Unable to set password in IIS 8 for Domain User as ApplicationPool Identity

  I'm trying to set a Domain User account as ApplicationPool Identity in IIS 8 (Windows 2012). When trying this using the IIS Management Console I always get an error: Value does not fall within the expected range. When trying to set the identity using appcmd.exe it fails on both the command setting the username and password or the command only setting the password. Setting the username is no problem.   After about 15 minutes, a Norton Ghost 14 backup fails with Error EBAB03F1: The specified network name is no longer available. The source computer is a P4 laptop running Windows XP SP3. The target computer is a Core2 Quad desktop running Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit. It does not help to disable Norton 360 on the source computer or Norton Antivirus 2008 on the target computer. The Event Viewer consistently shows the same two VSS-related errors after Norton Ghost starts but before it fails. It makes no difference if the VSS service is started or stopped. The VSS errors do not appear elsewhere in the event log, only after Ghost starts. The MSS event messages, however, are quite common, appearing throughout the log, and they may have nothing to do with the problem. My company has a DSL 2mb connection. My main problem is latency, in the morning its good but after that its gets really bad. • Norton Ghost EBAB03F1: The specified network name is no longer available

  After about 15 minutes, a Norton Ghost 14 backup fails with Error EBAB03F1: The specified network name is no longer available. The source computer is a P4 laptop running Windows XP SP3. The target computer is a Core2 Quad desktop running Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit. It does not help to disable Norton 360 on the source computer or Norton Antivirus 2008 on the target computer. The Event Viewer consistently shows the same two VSS-related errors after Norton Ghost starts but before it fails. It makes no difference if the VSS service is started or stopped. The VSS errors do not appear elsewhere in the event log, only after Ghost starts. The MSS event messages, however, are quite common, appearing throughout the log, and they may have nothing to do with the problem. I wrote a commit message. Oddly, every time I typed a space, an error popped up that read "1 of 2 files will be commited." I then tried to push the commit by clicking File - Source Control - Push. However, I get an error that notes that I have unsaved changes. Why? Didn't I just commit?

I would really like to be able to provide an output message to the committer containing some status information once the hook completes. Is it possible to redirect the output of the hook to come after the standard commit messages? For example: owner@dev-machine:/working/dir$ svn commit Sending FILE1 Sending FILE2 Transmissing file data ... Committed revision 13. Exporting project... Successfully exported to mysite.com The addition of the last two lines is the functionality I'm looking for.

  I have been using tortoise svn for a couple weeks now. I get errors very often. Almost everything I do creates an error. this is with repositories on the internet, locally on my machine or a machine on the network. So I started to keep track. Say if I am working on the head revision (7) in a working copy. I make a change and commit it. It gives me this error. But if I look at the log it tells me that there is now a revision 8 (the commit I just made) but I am still on revision 7. So I need to run update to be on the current revision that I just commited. I hope I explained that clearly. Anyways with all these errors I wonder.. Is TSVN just this unstable, does everyone have these issues. Or is it just me? If just me, what could I be doing wrong?
