• Web App fails when moved to production environment. Which server permissions do I need?

  I have developed a small web app. This app allows users to upload images. It also produces text files with the names of those images (the names are stored and retrieved to/from an MySQL Database.) I have developed this app using MAMP. To create the uploaded image files I use the PHP function imagejpeg('my/path/name.jpg') and to delete the files I use the PHP function unlink('folder1/folder2/name.jpg') to write to the text document I am using the function fopen('folder1/folder2/name.txt', 'w') all three of these functions produce errors related to permissions - now the site has been moved to a live hosting environment. Why is this? and what permissions do I need to set the folder's folder1 and folder2 to? I know that permission 777 is generally bad because it opens up your server to the public. However what I have found is that the functions fail to work unless I use 777 on the folders. Can anyone shed any light on my dilemma?

• Save jQuery callback functions in a separate file

  Probably I missed something, but lets say I have this: $('a.delete').click(function(){ resp=window.confirm("Are you sure you want to delete this?"); if(resp) return true; else return false; } Now, I want to save that callback function into a separate js file, because I will use it in several pages. My logic told me to do this: $('a.del').click(delete_element()); Having my js file like this: function delete_element(){ resp=window.confirm("Are you sure you want to delete this?"); if(resp) return true; else return false; } This doesn't work. Everytime my page loads, it displays the confirm window, even if I haven't clicked the link. It is clear that my logic failed this time. What am I missing?

• Avoiding string copying in Lua

  Say I have a C program which wants to call a very simple Lua function with two strings (let's say two comma separated lists, returning true if the lists intersect at all, false if not). The obvious way to do this is to push them onto the stack with lua_pushstring, which works fine, however, from the doc it looks like lua_pushstring but makes a copy of the string for Lua to work with. That means that to cross over to the Lua function is going to require two string copies which I could avoid by rewriting the Lua function in C. Is there any way to arrange things so that the existing C strings could be reused on the Lua side for the sake of performance (or would the strcpy cost pale into insignificance anyway)? From my investigation so far (my first couple of hours looking seriously at Lua), lite userdata seems like the sort of thing I want, but in the form of a string.

• Fluxbox compiling problems after making a change.

  I'm trying to make the change here: http://fluxbox-wiki.org/index.php?title=Howto_Make_dblclick_titlebar_maximize I am using the current git version of the fluxbox source. I assume that those instructions are perhaps no longer valid for the current git version. In the void FluxboxWindow::setupWindow() function I can see no references to CommandRef or frame. I would like to know if it is possible that I could work out where they should go in that function, with only having a limited knowledge? I am still trying to learn programming and don't know enough just yet to work out where they should go. I assume I can't just paste in the suggested lines anywhere in that function, but why not? I can paste the source if needed, but I am unsure where to paste to.

  Hey Guys, I'm new to jQuery and have an annoying problem. I have some login fields that are filled with default text when the field is empty and then removed when clicked. For example, # does not work simple.map do |n| if n%2 == 0 return :even else return :odd end end # Desired result: # => [:odd,:even,:odd,:even,:odd] is not valid ruby, and the compiler gets mad at me for even thinking about it. But how would I implement an equivalent sort of thing, that works?

• will mmap use user cpu instead of whole sys cpu? (solaris)

  when use mmap to allocate some anonymous mem, we often set the start address as 0/null so mmap will figure out the starting address by itself. And to get the start address, it will work thought the whole virtual memory space to find a hole which could put the chuck of mem to be allocated. I guess this is calculated as user cpu instead of sys cpu. If the virtual memory is fragmented, then the time to find the starting address will use more user cpu, is my understanding correct

• Numpy modify array in place?

  I have the following code which is attempting to normalize the values of an m x n array (It will be used as input to a neural network, where m is the number of training examples and n is the number of features). However, when I inspect the array in the interpreter after the script runs, I see that the values are not normalized; that is, they still have the original values. I guess this is because the assignment to the array variable inside the function is only seen within the function. How can I do this normalization in place?   We have a javascript function we use to track page stats internally. However, the URLs it reports many times include the page numbers for search results pages which we would rather not be reported. The pages that are reports are of the form: http://www.test.com/directory1/2 http://www.test.com/directory1/subdirectory1/15 http://www.test.com/directory3/1113 Instead we'd like the above reported as: http://www.test.com/directory1 http://www.test.com/directory1/subdirectory1 http://www.test.com/directory3 Please note that the numbered 'directory' and 'subdirectory' names above are just for example purposes and that the actual subdirectory names are all different, don't necessarily include numbers at the end of the directory name, and can be many levels deep. Currently our JavaScript function produces these URLs using the code: var page = location.hostname+document.location.pathname; I believe we need to use the JavaScript replace function in combination with some regex but I'm at a complete loss as to what that would look like. • Programmatically selecting file in explorer

  In my application I can programmatically open explorer and select a file using the following code: void BrowseToFile(LPCTSTR filename) { CString strArgs; strArgs = _T("/select,\""); strArgs += filename; strArgs += _T("\""); ShellExecute(0, _T("open"), _T("explorer.exe"), strArgs, 0, SW_NORMAL); } My problem is that if I call this function a second time with a different file, but in the same folder, the selection in explorer does not change to the new file, but remains on the previous file. For example, if I call my function with C:\path\to\file1.txt, a new explorer window will open and file1.txt will be selected. If I call my function a second time with C:\path\to\file2.txt, the existing explorer window will be activated, but the selection will still be on file1.txt. Is there a way to force explorer to update the selection or a better way to accomplish this?

• Monitor and Terminate Python script based on system resource use

  What is the "right" or "best" way to monitor the system resources a python script is using and terminate it if the resource use exceeds some predetermined values. In my case memory usage is of concern. I am not asking how to measure the system resource use although I am open to suggestions. As a simple example, let's assume I have a function that finds prime numbers less than some large number and adds them to a list based on some condition. I don't know ahead of time how many prime numbers will satisfy the condition so I what to be sure to terminate the function if I use up to much system memory (8gb lets say). I know that there are ways to monitor the size of python objects. What I don't know is the proper way to monitor the size of the list and exit is to just include a size test in the prime function loop and exit if it exceeds 8gb or if there is an "external" way to monitor and exit.

• Jquery SimpleModal flickers in Firefox

  I'm using SimpleModal plugin for Jquery and I have a weird problem with Firefox ( other browsers work fine: Chrome, Safari, Opera, IE). What happens is when I click on the button that launches the modal dialog, before showing the modal (and the fadeIn of the overlay), there is a quick "flicker", less than half a second. (It's longer on my slower PC). Weird thing is, it didn't happen in Firefox 3.5.2, but when I upgraded to 3.6.3, I got the flicker. Any ideas? • Injecting a response value into a textarea to subsequently post

  I have multiple notes with class=.note and unique id each inside a div. On click of edit I grab the id, show hidden form #noteditor and hide all notes. I am using the load function to get the response (using codeigniter so url does work) and input result in the editorfrorm Textarea id = upnote... Firebug response looks ok and I have tried to inject into a div and this works fine, BUT getting this injto the text area is causing me some headaches. There is also the chance that i am going around this a convoluted way due to my limited knowledge... • Simple XML parsing with Google Picasa API and JQuery

  I'm starting to look into Google's Picasa API for photo data, which provides you with a big XML file with info about albums and photos. I'm doing some quick and dirty tests to parse the XML file (which is saved locally to my hard drive for now) with JQuery and pull out the album id's, which are stored as "gphoto:id" tags, and display them in a div: $(document).ready(function() { $.get( 'albums.xml', function(data) { $(data).find('entry').each(function() { var albumId = $(this).children('gphoto:id').text(); $('#photos').append(albumId + '<br />'); }) }) }) I'm getting the following error in the console: jquery.js:3321 - Uncaught Syntax error, unrecognized expression: Syntax error, unrecognized expression: id This will work with other tags in the XML file (such as title, author, updated, etc.), but I'm trying to understand what's going on here. Does it have to do with the colon in "gphoto:id", somehow?
