  • Web Application Problems (web.config errors) HTTP 500.19 with IIS7.5 and ASP.NET v2

    This is driving the whole team crazy. There must be some simple mis-configured part of IIS or our Web Server, but every time we try to run out ASP.NET Web Application on IIS 7.5 we get the following error... Here's the error in full: HTTP Error 500.19 - Internal Server Error The requested page cannot be accessed because the related configuration data for the page is invalid. `Detailed Error Information` Module IIS Web Core Notification Unknown Handler Not yet determined Error Code 0x8007000d Config Error Config File \\?\E:\wwwroot\web.config Requested URL http://localhost:80/Default.aspx Physical Path Logon Method Not yet determined Logon User Not yet determined Config Source -1: 0: The machine is running Windows Server 2008 R2. We're developing our Web Application using Visual Studio 2008. According to Microsoft the code 8007000d means there's a syntax error in our web.config -- except the project builds and runs fine locally. Looking at the web.config in XML Notepad doesn't bring up any syntax errors, either. I'm assuming it must be some sort of poor configuration on my part...? Does anyone know where I might find further information about the error? Nothing is showing in EventViewer, either :( Not sure what else would be helpful to mention... Assistance is greatly appreciated. Thanks! UPDATES! - POSTED WEB.CONFIG BELOW Ok, since I posted the original question above, I've tracked down the precise lines in the web.config that were causing the error. Here are the lines (they appear between <System.webServer> tags)... <httpHandlers> <remove verb="*" path="*.asmx"/> <add verb="*" path="*.asmx" validate="false" type="System.Web.Script.Services.ScriptHandlerFactory, System.Web.Extensions, Version=1.0.61025.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=f2cb5667dc123a56"/> </httpHandlers> Note: If I delete the lines between the <httpHandlers> I STILL get the error. I literally have to delete <httpHandlers> (and the lines inbetween) to stop getting the above error. Once I've done this I get a new 500.19 error, however. The new error is also more explicit and specifically complains that it doesn't recognize the attribute "validate" (as seen on the third line above). Removing this attribute then makes it complain that the same line doesn't have the required "name" attribute. Adding this attribute then brings up ASP.NET error... Could not load file or assembly 'System.web.Extensions, Version=1.0.61025.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=f2cb5667dc123a56' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified. Obviously I think these new errors have just arisen from me deleting the <httpHandlers> tags in the first place -- they're obviously needed by the application -- so the question remains: Why would these tags kick up an error in IIS in the first place??? Do I need to install something to IIS to make it work with them? Thanks again for any help. WEB.CONFIG Here's the troublesome bits of our web.Config...   • Why is Microsoft under-supporting or under-developping VBNET?

    I ran into a situation where the lack of some features has become somewhat frustrating while developping in VB.NET 2.0. Since my first day of programming, I've always been a C programmer, and still am. Naturally, I chose C# as my favorite .NET language. Recently, a customer of mine has obliged that all of his development projects which disregard SharePoint development have to be written in VB.NET 2.0, that is to avoid conflictual systems to come into some problems. That is a legitimate choice of his which I approve somehow, since he's running some old central systems and is slowly migrating toward latest technologies. As for me, I would have prefered to go with C#, but then, never having done much VB in my life, I see it as an opportunity to learn somethings new, how to handle this and that in VBNET, etc. Except that the syntax is really too verbose for me, which is a pain! I got used to it and that is fine. However, I recently wanted to use the InternalsVisibleToAttribute which I discovered lastly here on SO. But then, in addition to not being able to have lambda expression that returns no value, which I discovered months ago, today I learn that I can't use the attribute in VBNET! Here is what I have read in an article: [...] Sorry VB.Net developers, Microsoft is again shunning you guys and this attribute is NOT available to you.... :( And here is the link: InternalsVisibleTo: Testing internal methods in .Net 2.0 I have heard from Anders Hejlsberg mouth while watching a Webcast from his presentation of .NET 4.0 Framework that the VBNET team was working or has worked in collaboration with the C# team (Eric Lippert and others) in order to bring VBNET to offer the same features as C# offers. But then, I say to myself that the VBNET team has a huge step forward to make, if already in .NET 2.0, some of the most important features lacked! So my question is this: Why is Microsoft under-supporting or under-developping VBNET? Will VBNET ever be lacking the C# features?

  • Should I include HTML markup in my JSON response?

    In an e-commerce site, when adding an item to a cart, I'd like to show a popup window with the options you can choose. Imagine you're ordering an iPod Shuffle and now you have to choose the color and text to engrave. I'd like the window to be modal, so I'm using a lightbox populated by an Ajax call. Now I have two options: Option 1: Send only the data, and generate the HTML markup using JavaScript What's nice about this is that it trims down the Ajax request to the bear minimum and doesn't mix the data with the markup. What's not so great about this is that now I need to use JavaScript to do my rendering, instead of having a template engine on the server-side do it. I might be able to clean up the approach a bit by using a client-side templating solution. Option 2: Send the HTML markup What's good about this is that I can have the same server-side templating engine I'm using for the rest of my rendering tasks (Django), do the rendering of the lightbox. JavaScript is only used to insert the HTML fragment into the page. So it clearly leaves the rendering to the rendering engine. Makes sense to me. But I don't feel comfortable mixing data and markup in an Ajax call for some reason. I'm not sure what makes me feel uneasy about it. I mean, it's the same way every web page is served up -- data plus markup -- right?

  • Debugging .NET 2.0 assembly from unmanaged code in VS2010?

    I’ve run into a serious snag trying to debug a .NET 2.0 assembly that is called from unmanaged code in Visual Studio 2010. I maintain a host of components that using COM interop and custom .NET runtime hosting and ever since installing Visual Studio 2010 I’ve been utterly blocked by VS 2010’s inability to apparently debug .NET 2.0 assemblies when launching through unmanaged code. Here’s what I’m actually doing (simplified scenario to demonstrate): I have a .NET 2.0 assembly that is compiled for COM Interop Compile project with .NET 2.0 target and register for COM Interop Set a breakpoint in the .NET component in one of the class methods Instantiate the .NET component via COM interop and call method The result is that the COM call works fine but the debugger never triggers on the breakpoint. If I now take that same assembly and target it at .NET 4.0 without any other changes everything works as expected – the breakpoint set in the assembly project triggers just fine. The easy answer to this problem seems to be “Just switch to .NET 4.0” but unfortunately the application and the way the runtime is actually hosted has a few complications. Specifically the runtime hosting uses .NET 2.0 hosting and apparently the only reliable way to host the .NET 4.0 runtime is to use the new hosting APIs that are provided only with .NET 4.0 (which all by itself is lame, lame, lame as once again the promise of backwards compatibility is broken once again by .NET). So for the moment I need to continue using the .NET 2.0 hosting APIs due to application requirements. I’ve been searching high and low and experimenting back and forth, posted a few questions on the MSDN forums but haven’t gotten any hints on what might be causing the apparent failure of Visual Studio 2010 to debug my .NET 2.0 assembly properly when called from un-managed code. Incidentally debugging .NET 2.0 targeted assemblies works fine when running with a managed startup application – it seems the issue is specific to the unmanaged code starting up. My particular issue is with custom runtime hosting which at first I thought was the problem. But the same issue manifests when using COM Interop against a .NET 2.0 assembly, so the hosting is probably not the issue.     I want to write a page where user's can write a blog post and publish it to the blog. I've downloaded blog engine .NET and looked at the code and I like the way they do it, but it's completely an overkill of what I need. What I need is only a title, author, date, and the blog post it self. I don't even want users to post comments or anything like that. My approach is to save all those blog post information into an xml and then when a page loads it loops around those xml files to show the blog post. Is there a tutorial on how to do this online? Especially for doing blog posts.

    Hi I am trying to test some exceptions in my project and one of the Exceptions I catch is SQlException. Now It seems that you can't go new SqlException() so I am not sure how I can throw a exception especially without somehow calling the database(and since it is unit tests it is usually advised not to call the database since it is slow). So I am using nunit and moq so I am not sure how to fake this. Edit Based on the answers they seem to all be based on ado.net I am using linq to sql. So that stuff is like behind the scenes.   • Building a generic page "Query Analyzer" like in Asp.net with SMO

    Hello, I'm build a web page in ASP.net is supposed to work just like Query Analyzer. It has basically a textarea to input the sql command, and an Execute button. I'm using SMO to execute the command in the database, as follows: //Create object SMO Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo.Server server = new Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo.Server(new Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Common.ServerConnection(oConn)); //To execute the command server.ConnectionContext.ExecuteNonQuery(tbx_cmd.Text); //OR myDataset = server.ConnectionContext.ExecuteWithResults(tbx_cmd.Text); The problem is that the textarea command can contain anything, from a stored procedure (with GO's statements) and any select command that return resultsets, just like Query Analyzer. But, if I have GO statements, I only can perform the query using ExecuteNonQuery method. If I use the ExecuteWithResults method, it raises errors because of the GO statements. And if I want the resultsets to be available, of course I can only use the ExecuteWithResults method. Does anybody knows how can I do to execute the same command texts at the same time? Thank you!

    Hi I'm having a bit of a nightmare here! I'mv trying output a webform to html using page.rendercontrol and htmltextwriter but it is resulting in a blank email. Code: StringBuilder sb = new StringBuilder(); StringWriter sw = new StringWriter(sb); HtmlTextWriter htmlTW = new HtmlTextWriter(sw); page.RenderControl(htmlTW); String content = sb.ToString(); MailMessage mail = new MailMessage(); mail.From = new MailAddress("[email protected]"); mail.To.Add("[email protected]"); mail.IsBodyHtml = true; mail.Subject = "Test"; mail.Body = content; SmtpClient smtp = new SmtpClient("1111"); smtp.Send(mail); Response.Write("Message Sent"); I also tried it by rendering a single textbox and got and error saying It needed to be within form tags (which are on the masterpage). I tried this fix: http://forums.asp.net/p/1016960/1368933.aspx#1368933 and added: public override void VerifyRenderingInServerForm(Control control) { return; } But now the errror I get is: VerifyRenderingInServerForm(Control)': no suitable method found to override Does anyone have a fix for this?     I tried to be the most descriptive I could. Ok, so since I've never done anything like this before, I guess it's better to ask before starting at all to just don't get the whole process wrong. We have a report that has to be called from an ASP.NET application, it could be a simple button. Through the code-behind, I gotta pass in a paramater, render the report, and don't save it anywhere, just open it to the user, as a .pdf file so he could save or print it. So please, give me links or tips, I'm reading MSDN documentation right now... If you have any suggestion on other technologies, as for the report, I'd like to hear it, but it has to be called from ASP.NET. Thanks in advance!

    I've had a set of legacy pages running on my IIS7 server for at least a year. Sometime last week something changed and now this line: Response.Write CStr(myRS(0).name) & "=" & Cstr(myRS(0).value) which used to return nothing more exciting than the string: 'Updated=true' (the sproc processing input params, stores them to a table, checks for errors and when that's all done returns a success code by executing this statement: select 'true' as [Updated] Now my pageside error handler is being involved and offers: myError=Error from /logQuizScore.asp Error source: Microsoft VBScript runtime error Error number: 13 Error description: Type mismatch Important to note that all lots of pages use the same framework - same db, same coding format, connecitonstrings and (so far as I can tell) all others are working. Troubleshot to this point: The call to the stored procedure is working correctly (stuff is stored to the given table). The output from the stored procedure is working correctly (i can execute a direct call with the given parameters and stuff works. I can see profiler calling and passing. I can replace all code with 'select 'true' as updated' and the error is the same. everything up to the response.write statement above is correct. So something changed how ADO renders that particular recordset. So i try: Response.Write myRS.Item.count and get: Error number: 424 Error description: Object required The recordset object seems not to be instantiating but the command object _did execute.     Hi, I want to output some dynamic data from an ASP.NET website to Excel. I found that the easiest way which does not require to use Excel XML or to install Excel on server machine is to output data as a table and specify application/vnd.ms-excel type. The problem is when I do so and try to open the file in Excel Viewer, I receive the following error message: Microsoft Excel Viewer cannot open files of this type. Then nothing is opened.     My scenario: This is an ASP.NET 4.0 web app programmed via C# I implement a repository pattern. My repositorys all share the same ObjectContext, which is stored in httpContext.Items. Each repository creates a new ObjectSet of type E. Note that I use POCO classes with the entity framework. State and Country are 2 of these POCO classes. Repository stateRepo = new Repository<State>(); Repository countryRepo = new Repository<Country>(); IEnumerable<State> states = (from s in _stateRepo.GetQuery() join c in _countryRepo.GetQuery() on s.countryID equals c.countryID select s).ToList(); Debug.WriteLine(states.First().Country.country) essentially, I want to retrieve the state and the related country entity. The query only returns the state data... and I get a null argument exception on the Debug.WriteLine LazyLoading is disabled in my .edmx... thats the way I want it.

    I have a web service which runs with a HttpHandler class. In this class, I inspect the request stream for form / query string parameters. In some circumstances, it seemed as though these parameters weren't getting through. After a bit of digging around, I came across some behaviour I don't quite understand. See below: // The request contains 'a=1&b=2&c=3' // TEST ONLY: Read the entire request string contents; using (StreamReader sr = new StreamReader(context.Request.InputStream)) { contents = sr.ReadToEnd(); } // Here 'contents' is usually correct - containing 'a=1&b=2&c=3'. Sometimes it is empty. string a = context.Request["a"]; // Here, a = null, regardless of whether the 'contents' variable above is correct Can anyone explain to me why this might be happening? I'm using a .NET WebClient and UploadDataAsync to perform the request on the client if that makes any difference. If you need any more information, please let me know.

    Hi, I have the following scenario Web server A: public on the internet, IIRF (current version) installed Web server B: on the intranet, visible to A, my APS.NET web app is installed on, name is pgdbtest3 I configure IIRF so that any request targetting directory /MMS/ on server A is redirected to the corresponding one http://pgdbtest3/MMS/. The ini file look like: StatusUrl /iirfStatus RemoteOk RedirectRule ^/MMS$ /MMS/ [I] ProxyPass ^/MMS/(.*)$ http://pgdbtest3/MMS/$1 [I] It is working fine except that any post back causes an error (404 is returned). I have tried many solutions including the removal of the action attribute from the form but with no luck. Please help!

    I have a WCF Web Service that my ASP.NET app uses. It has been working fine for quite some time. I just added in a Dev Express Grid (and the Dev Express DLLs) and a new page that uses them and now I am getting parsing errors on the WSDL. But the weird part is that it works fine on my machine but fails on the web server machine. (Both are connecting to the same web services WSDL.)     I have a SQL interface page in my classic ASP web app that allows admin users to run queries against the app's database (MSDE 2000) - it simply consists of a textarea that the user submits and the app returns the resulting list of records as below Dim oRS Set oRS = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Recordset") oRS.ActiveConnection = sConnectionString // run the query - this is for the admin only so doesnt check for sql safe commands etc. oRS.Open Request.Form("txtSQL") If Not oRS.EOF Then // list the field names from the recordset For i = 0 to oRS.Fields.Count - 1 Response.Write oRS.Fields(i).name & "&nbsp;" Next // show the data for each record in the recordset While Not oRS.EOF For i = 0 to oRS.Fields.Count - 1 Response.Write oRS.Fields(i).value & "&nbsp;" Next Response.Write "<br />" oRS.Movenext() Wend End If The problem with this is that if you send it an invalid query (with a spelling mistake, invalid join etc.) instead of throwing back an error immediately, it hangs IIS (you can see this by trying to browse the app from another computer, it fails) for a number of minutes and THEN returns the error. I have NO idea why! Can anyone help?
