• Copying files SSH vs sFTP

  I'm a bit of a unix noob, but this question seems super basic, yet I can't find an answer anywhere. Basically, to my knowledge, sFTP is just FTP over ssh. So, why can't I drag and drop files from one folder to another on the server side like I can on ssh. Why when I want to unzip a .tar in a server folder, does it first want to copy it to my machine and then back? Why can't it just unzip like it can when I'm using the command line. I know that when I use the command line it is using the resources of the remote machine, but why can't sFTP do that too? Is there a way to execute commands which I would normally do over SSH, but in a gui? I'm tried mapping to the drive to my own machine, I've tried so many sFTP clients that it's silly. Is there another class of program that I just don't know of?

• Dual booting windows 8.1 and ubuntu

  I have a lenovo laptop with windows 8.1. I wanted to use ubuntu alongside windows. Hence, i downloaded the ubuntu 14.04 iso and created a live pendrive using Universal USB installer. I disabled secure boot and booted from the pendrive. All i get is the GNU GRUB command line version 2.X. I don't get a GUI for the GRUB and i don't know how to boot into ubuntu from the command line. I searched quite a few online forums but in vain. Can someone tell me how to proceed? Thanks in advance.

• Rhythmbox 2.99.1 crashes when playing any song on Ubuntu 13.10

  Yesterday rhythmbox was running smoothly but today it crashes only a few seconds after I hit the play button, regardless of track. I've tried disabling plugins, re-installing rhythmbox via synaptics, clearing the library and the rhythmdb.xml-file and just adding one album. Still, it crashes. If I run the rhythmbox from the command line i get the following before I have to force quit: :~$ rhythmbox Failed to create secure directory (/run/user/1000/pulse): Permission denied Killed :~$ However, if i run rhythmbox via the command line as superuser it does work. • Exchange server not serving mobile devices - how to troubleshoot?

  Our exchange server has suddenly stopped serving mobile devices. Attempts to connect result in our ActiveSync server returning HTTP 500. It is serving outlook clients fine. Our server is Windows 2003 SBS 6.5 SP2 There are no abnormal events in the system log. I ran the "Exchange ActiveSync with AutoDiscover" at https://www.testexchangeconnectivity.com/ I've notice an abnormality in the exchange properties, Log File Directory shows: Access denied. • Copy/Paste (Clipboard like) functionality from a VNC desktop

  I use TightVNC, RealVNC to access the Remote Linux(CentOS,Ubuntu) desktops by running a vncserver on the remote machine. When I connect to those servers from my Windows host: Can I use the Copy/Paste functionality on the VNC client desktop window. i.e. Copy some text on some terminal open inside the VNC client desktop window and paste it into some text file on my local windows machhines and vice-a-versa? I checked TightVNC options but did not see anything. Can it be done by a)Running vncserver on the remote machine with some options or b)By running some configuration on remote machine to enable this. How could I get it done? Also is this kind of Copy/Paste functionality possible in Microsoft Windows Remote Desktop connection/Terminal session protocol?

• BES Express - configure MDS to push messages from 3rd party web application

  Hi! I have developed IIS web service to send PAP messages using Blackberry Push API over MDS. And there is an application installed on device, configured to receive push messages on appropriate port. Everything works well on MDS simulator. But it's not working well in real environment: I have installed BES Express and register several devices. I can browse MDS url with appropriate port, so url is correct. Also port enabled for reliable pushes is used in push message and in device application. • Why am I getting this "Connection to PulseAudio failed" error?

  I have a computer that runs Mythbuntu 11.10. It has an external USB Kenwood Digital Audio device. When I open up pavucontrol, I get this message: If I do as the message suggests and run start-pulseaudio-x11, I get this output: $ start-pulseaudio-x11 Connection failure: Connection refused pa_context_connect() failed: Connection refused How do I correct this error? Update: Somewhere during the course of doing the suggested tests in the comments, a new audio device has now become visible in my sound settings. I have not attached or made any new device, so this must be the result of of some setting change. The device I use and know about is the Kenwood Audio device.   I want to convert a MKV video file containing DTS audio to a stream with AC3 audio. I want to pass this resulting stream to mediatomb's transcoding feature. Mediatomb will transfer the stream via DLNA to a LG TV, which does not support DTS audio. I have tried the VLC command below but the TV does not recognize the stream, and playing the destination stream on PC does not produce sound. vlc -vvv -I dummy INPUT.file --sout \ '#transcode{acodec=ac3,ab=256k,channels=2,threads=4} \ :std{mux=ts,access=file,dst=DEST.file}' The following ffmpeg command give a stream that plays on the TV with sound, but the ffmpeg process gets killed (with signal 15) within 10-15 seconds, and then the TV restarts the playback from the beginning.   I am using ssh as a SOCKS server by running this command on the server: ssh -f2qTnND *:1080 root@localhost There is one problem: anybody can connect to the server and use it's internet connection. Options: To use iptables to filter access to the server, but I connect to the server from various non-statically allocated IP addresses so I would have to edit very frequently those filters which can be annoying. To install a SOCKS server on the remote. Ultimately this is the last option if there is no other simpler way to do it. (I am very lazy) Launching the same command on clients machines. The problem here is that some clients don't run on Linux and it is awkward to set up the tunnel (Windows + Putty). Is there a way to add authentication to a SOCKS server made using ssh? Bonus question: How to add encryption between the client and the server (made using ssh)?

• How to prevent truncated output lines in Console2?

  I just started using Console2 and can't seem to find a way to scroll horizontally when command output is wider than the current size of the window and when I try to resize the window the truncated information is just lost. Is there a way to add horizontal scrolling or to fix the resizing issue? If not, are there programs similar to Console2 that do not have this problem? Thanks! EDIT: Actually, my bad, no information is getting lost, it's just not resizing it properly. EDIT: Turns out that if you resize Console2 to make it smaller and cutoff text you can't resize it and get it back?? Is that a bug?

• How do special folders work on Windows 7?

  Hello, I did something silly and accidentally moved my my special folders (My Documents, My Music etc.) to the Desktop. Once I noticed my mistake I quickly moved them back. But now my System acts erratically. It continuously creates new empty folders on my Desktop. And I have now two folders named "My Pictures" in my home directory. One of which is magically linked to the one in Desktop while on the command line one one is actually visible. If I delete the superfluous folders on Desktop then the explorer crashes. It is all a big mess. Of course I checked HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\User Shell Folders and it looks all ok there. So here the question: As anybody got any informations on how Windows 7 handles the special folders which might help be clean up the mess? I am well versed in using both the command line or the registry editor.

• Microsoft FTP fails to connect after the client requests the list of features (FEAT)

  This is a really weird problem. The first few times I try to connect Filezilla just hangs on the line 211-Extended features supported: for a while before coming up and saying Error: Could not connect to server. The filezilla log below: Command: PASS *********** Response: 230 User logged in. Command: FEAT Response: 211-Extended features supported: Error: Could not connect to server The weird thing is if I keep trying to connect eventually it just works and connects fine. After Filezilla knows which features the server supports it stops asking for a while which enables you to connect first time until Filezilla decides it wants to double check the features list again. I'm at a loss on how to debug this. Has anyone experienced similar?

  I'd like to change the icon of a program called Refit with a custom one. This program has various tools and when I try to change those icons all is ok but then I run the following command: $ locate refit.icns and the output is: $ /efi/refind/icons/os_refit.icns The problem is that I don't have any folder called refind and the path simply doesn't exist. I tried it with both: $ ls and $ sudo ls in the /efi directory. So my questions are actually two: how can I change the icon of that program? And why there is this strange behavior with the locate command? I'm on Snow Leopard 10.6.8. Thanks for your help.

  I am attempting to use the find command and came across an article at http://www.linux.ie/newusers/beginners-linux-guide/find.php which states The wildcard character is escaped with a slash so BASH sends a literal asterisk to the find utility as an argument instead of performing filename expansion and passing any number of files in as arguments. for the command find . -name up\*. Being new to the world of Linux I don't quite understand how the use of a backslash which is meant to escape the meta character * is interpreted and returns results as though as it is being passed to find. Does it mean if I use the -name option I have to use a backslash to pass a wildcard and if I don't use -name I don't have to use a backslash?

  I have a situation where I have some input files like this: M2U0001.MPG M2U0180.MPG And I want to run a command (in a bash shell) on each similarly named file in the directory. I'd like the current file name to be given to this command as an input and a modified version of the filename to be given as an output file. Here's an example: ffmpeg -i M2U0001.MPG M2U0001_fixed.MPG I had the idea of using xargs and sed, but this is as far as I got: ls -1 *.MPG | xargs -I{} ffmpeg -i {} `echo {} | sed -r 's/[0-9]{2,}/&_fixed/'` But this results in the original filename being output in both positions. Am I totally going about this the wrong way? I found that if I echo the filename directly to the embedded chunk like this it works: echo M2U0001.MPG | sed -r 's/[0-9]{2,}/&_fixed/'

• Lubuntu Stability Problems

  I installed Lubuntu 11.10 from scratch a few days ago, now I can't even run aptitude without crashing from the mess it's made of the package system. (yes I added a non-offical repository, because I needed firefox 8) I'm a new user. So I don't know. Did I make a mistake by loading Lubuntu? I really like the LXDE stuff. but so many things seem very buggy. ***edit I think besides the sound problems, all of my other problems are with either LXDE or with openbox. And I think the sound problem is Lubuntu specific also. Problems like windows not popping up, windows not getting painted. Windows flashing in the panel for no reason, Windows losing their title bar occasionally, mousewheel changing desktops when i'm clearly in a window, LXDE panel not responding to clicks, applications not launching from the menu, applications not launching from firefox downloads window, applications crashing when I don't do anything but click on them. Pretty sure all this stuff is openbox or LXDE. This is just too much work to keep Lubuntu running. It's a lemon. (sorry I realize I should be constructive but I'm tired) It's pretty clear that openbox needs some damn bugfixes for compatibility with Oneric. And LXDE isn't that great either. I expect things to launch when I click on them. I think installing the acpid package is what made it clear to me. If 20 seconds after installing the package (from the offical repo), linux has already crashed, then I'm in the wrong damn neighborhood.

Earlier this year, I have received one question many times – Where is Query Analyzer in SQL Server 2005? I wrote small post about it and pointed many users to that post – SQL SERVER – 2005 Query Analyzer – Microsoft SQL SERVER Management Studio. Recently I have been receiving similar question. OUTPUT Clause Example and Explanation with INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE SQL Server 2005 has a new OUTPUT clause, which is quite useful. Both parameters are different, and they are not always related. It is possible that the query cost of any statement is less, but the amount of the data returned is considerably larger, which is causing any query to run slow. • Need script to redirect STDIN & STDOUT to named pipes

  I have an app that launches an authentication helper (my script) and uses STDIN/STDOUT to communicate. I want to re-direct STDIN and STDOUT from this script to two named pipes for interaction with another program. E.g.: SCRIPT_STDIN pipe1 SCRIPT_STDOUT < pipe2 Here is the flow I'm trying to accomplish: [Application] - Launches helper script, writes to helpers STDIN, reads from helpers STDOUT (example: STDIN:username,password; STDOUT:LOGIN_OK) [Helper Script] - Reads STDIN (data from app), forwards to PIPE1; reads from PIPE2, writes that back to the app on STDOUT [Other Process] - Reads from PIPE1 input, processes and returns results to PIPE2 The cat command can almost do what I want. If there were an option to copy STDIN to STDERR I could make cat do this with a command (assuming the fictitious option -e echos to STDERR rather than STDOUT): cat -e PIPE2 2PIPE1 (read from PIPE2 and write it to STDOUT, copy input, normally going to STDERR to PIPE1)

• Trying to mount NFS share on Windows Machien at startup with Z: letter for all users

  Windows Server 2008 We are trying to mount a specific drive letter on a windows machine from a unix machine. We need the mount to be available to the server even if no users are logged in and to users who are logged in with If we run the command from the command prompt manually it conencts and we have access to the NFS share, and can open it and see and edit files. mount -o fileaccess=777 anon \\127.0.0.1\nav z: (ip address replaced with 127.0.0.1 for security reasons) However if we try to automate the task by making an entry in the task schedule for boot time, to execute the batch script, it adds a disconencted drive to the list in 'My Computer' but it is disconencted and when trying to access the drive an error is produced: Z: is not accessible The data area passed to a system call is too small.| Tried as administrator with highest privelidges, as SYSTEM (group) and as my user (adminstator level user) same results. Is there another way to do this? Most of the help I have found online suggest this way but it keeps failing.
