• Help choose a code generation tools for ASP.NET

  Hello, I am new to the code generation tools and I would like to know how does a tool like LLBGen Pro compares with the Entity Framework? On top of that my boos is really looking into a tool called CodeOnTime http://codeontime.com/default.aspx because he likes their good UI support. I am asking here because I really want an unbiased opinion. I am not sure if LLBGen can also generate the UI. So far all the development in the house we do it the classic way coding each layer manually. However we are in need of a fast prototyping tool. Any advice to help me choose wisely will be much appreciated thanks in advance.

  I'm serializing several objects into a single stream, but when i try to read them back, i can't seem to get anything but the last object: ProtoBuf.Serializer.Serialize(stream, postA1); ProtoBuf.Serializer.Serialize(stream, postB2); stream.Position = 0; var postA2 = ProtoBuf.Serializer.Deserialize<Post>(stream); var postB2 = ProtoBuf.Serializer.Deserialize<Post>(stream); The first deserialize moves the stream to the end and postA2 contains the value of postB2, while postB2 is just an uninitialized instance. Is this expected behavior, and if so, how do you deserialize an object from a random position in a stream?

  I have created a windows application setup program, it needs to have a text file in the application folder. The file is also included while creating the setup. Once the setup successfully completes and my program tries to modify the file based on user input, its simple throwing an exception. I am using Windows 7 Home Premium OS.   I have this code set up to navigate to a certain .html document depending on what's selected from a ListBox: Private Sub FileList_SelectedIndexChanged(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles FileList.SelectedIndexChanged HelpWindow.Navigate(System.AppDomain.CurrentDomain.BaseDirectory & "help\" & fileArray(FileList.SelectedIndex, 1)) End Sub The problem is, when I first select something in the ListBox, it successfully navigates to that file and displays it. But when I select something a second time it doesn't change. All of the paths it's trying to navigate to are correct. I've checked this 1000 times. Anyone have any clues why this isn't working?   Ok I've just ran into this and I was only supposed to be checking my emails however I've ended up watching this (and not far off subscribing to TekPub). http://tekpub.com/production/starter Now these app is a great starting point, but it raises one issue for me and the development process I've been shown to follow (rightly or wrongly). There is no conversion from the LinqToSql object when passing data to the view. Are there any negitives to this? The main one I can see is with validation, does this cause issues when using MVC's built in validation as this is somthing we use extensivly. Because we are using the built in objects generated by LinqToSql how would one go about adding validation, like [Required(ErrorMessage="Name is Required")] public string Name {get;set;} Interested to understand the benifits of this methodology and any negitives that, should we take it on, experiance through the development process.

Is there a better way to set metatags like title and description than using a ContentPlaceHolder in the master and setting that ContentPlaceHolder's value in each view? How do you configure your views' metatags in a large-scale site with dozens and dozens of pages?

  Hi, I'm binding a GridView to a domain model object, this domain model object has a method for working out a formatted value to display on the grid. I'd like to use this method for my display value, which is fine, but I'd also like to be able to sort on the value returned by that method. My sort expression can only take in a property/field at the moment. Help please! What do I need to do to get this to work? I'm using an SPGridView actually, but that doesn't make a lot of difference to my problem. Thanks.

  Again I want to talk about safety of the Thread.Abort function. I was interested to have some way to abort operations which I can't control really and don't want actually, but I want to have my threads free as soon as possible to prevent thread thirsty of my application. So I wrote some test code to see if it's possible to use Thread.Abort and have the aborting thread clean up resources propertly. Here's code: int threadRunCount = 0; int threadAbortCount = 0; int threadFinallyCount = 0; int iterations = 0; while( true ) { Thread t = new Thread( () => { threadRunCount++; try { Thread.Sleep( Random.Next( 45, 55 ) ); } catch( ThreadAbortException ) { threadAbortCount++; } finally { threadFinallyCount++; } } ); t.Start(); Thread.Sleep( 45 ); t.Abort(); iterations++; } So, so far this code worked for about 5 mins, and threadRunCount was always equal to threadFinally and threadAbort was somewhat lower in number, because some threads completed with no abort or probably got aborted in finally. So the question is, do I miss something?

  We have created an http module that loads data on initialize into a list, and uses that list on every endrequest event of application. However we got a null reference exception on the module at endRequest event complaining that the content is null. Yet we are sure that at module initialization we have put non-null objects correctly. How is this possible? Any ideas? Thanks in advance. • Me.Invoke in VB.NET doesn't actually "Invoke" - threads stall on Invoke statement

  I've got the following code: Public Delegate Sub SetStatusBarTextDelegate(ByVal StatusText As String) Private Sub SetStatusBarText(ByVal StatusText As String) If Me.InvokeRequired Then Me.Invoke(New SetStatusBarTextDelegate(AddressOf SetStatusBarText), StatusText) Else Me.labelScanningProgress.Text = StatusText End If End Sub The problem is that, when I call the "SetStatusBarText" sub from another thread, InvokeRequired is True (as it should be), but then my threads stall on the Me.Invoke statement - pausing execution shows them all just sitting there, not actually invoking anything. Any thoughts about why the threads seem to be afraid of the Invoke?

  I want to clear the session on Page unload. Here is a condition : If user goes from Page A to Page B of the same site session must not get cleared. If user close the browser window or Tab(close the site),session must gets cleared.   I'm in the middle of developing an e-commerce site that is using Paypal as it's payment gateway. All I want to do is run some code before the user heads off to Paypal to pay for their order, but I have no idea how to do it. The user should click a submit button, changes are made (in this case, the status of the order), and then the user is redirected to the payment gateway. Eg: [AcceptVerbs(HttpVerbs.Post)] public ActionResult GoToPaypal(FormCollection collection) { //change order status //send user to paypal where they pay for their order } So my question is how do you do application stuff and then redirect to paypal's payment gateway? • Asp.net url rewriting and domain redirection

  I have a domain "test.com" and I want this domain to redirect to "mydomain.com/test". I'm with 1and1 for my domain test.com and with discountAsp for mydomain.com. In the control panel of 1and1 you can set a redirection from a domain to another domain, so everything is fine. But when i'm on the page mydomain.com/test I want my url to be rewritten as test.com Is this possible to do that with IIS or in my asp.page (would prefer in my page) I'm using iis7 Thanks
