• Need Explanation of couchdb reduce function

  From http://wiki.apache.org/couchdb/Introduction_to_CouchDB_views The couchdb reduce function is defined as function (key, values, rereduce) { return sum(values); } key will be an array whose elements are arrays of the form [key,id] values will be an array of the values emitted for the respective elements in keys i.e. reduce([ [key1,id1], [key2,id2], [key3,id3] ], [value1,value2,value3], false) I am having trouble understanding when/why the array of keys would contain different key values. If the array of keys does contain different key values, how would I deal with it? As an example, assume that my database contains movements between accounts of the form. {"amount":100, "CreditAccount":"account_number", "DebitAccount":"account_number"} I want a view that gives the balance of an account. My map function does: emit( doc.CreditAccount, doc.amount ) emit( doc.DebitAccount, -doc.amount ) My reduce function does: return sum(values); I seem to get the expected results, however I can't reconcile this with the possibility that my reduce function gets different key values. Is my reduce function supposed to group key values first? What kind of result would I return in that case?

• Creating a assertClass() method in JUnit

  Hi, I'm creating a test platform for a protocol project based on Apache MINA. In MINA when you receive packets the messageReceived() method gets an Object. Ideally I'd like to use a JUnit method assertClass(), however it doesn't exist. I'm playing around trying to work out what is the closest I can get. I'm trying to find something similar to instanceof. Currently I have: public void assertClass(String msg, Class expected, Object given) { if(!expected.isInstance(given)) Assert.fail(msg); } To call this: assertClass("Packet type is correct", SomePacket.class, receivedPacket); This works without issue, however in experimenting and playing with this my interest was peaked by the instanceof operator. if (receivedPacket instanceof SomePacket) { .. } How is instanceof able to use SomePacket to reference the object at hand? It's not an instance of an object, its not a class, what is it?! Once establishing what type SomePacket is at that point is it possible to extend my assertClass() to not have to include the SomePacket.class argument, instead favouring SomePacket?

• Can't access a property with <html:checkbox property="..."> when iterating a list

  Hi. In my Struts form I've got a list. In a JSP I iterate over it like this: <c:forEach items="${MyForm.auspraegungen}" var="auspraegung"> <tr> <td>${auspraegung.name}</td> <td>${auspraegung.forced}</td> <td>${auspraegung.cbx_uebernehmen}</td> <html:checkbox property="auspraegung.cbx_uebernehmen" /> </tr> </c:forEach> Now the <html:checkbox isn't working. I'm always getting the following error: Caused by: javax.servlet.jsp.JspException: No getter method for property auspraegung.cbx_uebernehmen of bean org.apache.struts.taglib.html.BEAN But actually there is a getter for this property in my form class. It's written like this: public Boolean getCbx_uebernehmen() { return cbx_uebernehmen; } When I remove the checkbox it's also possible to display the property as in the <td>-tag above so I don't know where the problem is. Maybe I'm accessing it in the wrong way?

• How to store and synchronize a big list of strings

  I have a large database table in SQLExpress on Windows, with a particular field of interest 'code'. I have an Apache web server with MySQL on Linux. The web application on the Linux box needs access to the list of all codes. The only thing it will use the list for is checking for the existence of a given code. Having the Linux server call out to the Windows server is impractical as the Windows server is behind a NAT'ed office internet connection, and it may not always be accessible. I have set it so the Windows server will push the list of codes to the web server by means of a simple HTTP POST request. However, at this point I have not implemented the storage of the codes on the Linux box. Should I store them in a MySQL table with a single field 'code'? Then I get fast indexed lookups O(1), however I think synchronization will be an issue - given an updated list of codes, pushed from the Windows box, how would I optimally synchronize the list with the database? TRUNCATE, followed by INSERT? Should I instead store them in a flat file? Then I have O(n) look up time rather than O(1). Additionally an extra constant-time overhead too, as I will be processing the file in Ruby. However, synchronization is easy - simply replace the file.

• Google Chrome && (cache || memory leaks).

  Hello All, I have a big problem with Google Chrome and its memory. My app is displaying to user several image charts and reloads them every 10s. In the interval i have code like that var image = new Image(); var src = 'myurl/image'+new Date().getTime(); image.onload = function() { document.getElementById('myimage').src = src; image.onload = image.onabort = image.onerror = null; } image.src = src; So i have no memory leaks in Firefox and IE. Here the response headers for images Server Apache-Coyote/1.1 Vary * Cache-Control no-store (// I try no-cache, must-revalidate and so on here) Content-Type image/png Content-Length 11131 Date Mon, 31 May 2010 14:00:28 GMT Vary * taken from here In about:cache page there is no my cached images. If i enable purge-memory-button for chrome (--purge-memory-button parameter) it`s not help. Images is in PNG24. So i think that the problem is not in cache. May be Google Chrome is not releasing memory for old images. Please help. Any suggestions. Thanks.

• Cannot see echo message but my localhost works

  This is my very first php code and I can't seem to get it to work. (I'm using Eclipse) <html> <body> <?php echo 'Hello World!'; $txt = "I <3 you!"; $num = 19; ?> </html> </body> When I run it (http://localhost/Assignment3.0/index.php), I get: Not Found The requested URL /Assignment3.0/index.php was not found on this server. Apache/2.2.22 (Ubuntu) Server at localhost Port 80 But when I run this (http://localhost/), I get: It works! This is the default web page for this server. The web server software is running but no content has been added, yet. So what could be the problem? Where's my "Hello World!"? Also, for Stackoverflow formatting, how do I start a new line w/o adding a blank line in between?

• How can I measure my (SAMP) server's bandwidth usage?

  I'm running a Solaris server to serve PHP through Apache. What tools can I use to measure the bandwidth my server is currently using? I use Google analytics to measure traffic, but as far as I know, it ignores file size. I have a rough idea of the average size of the pages I serve, and can do a back-of-the-envelope calculation of my bandwidth usage by multiplying page views (from Google) by average page size, but I'm looking for a solution that is more rigorous and exact. Also, I'm not trying to throttle anything, or implement usage caps or anything like that. I'd just like to measure the bandwidth usage, so I know what it is. An example of what I'm after is the usage meter that Slicehost provides in their admin website for their users. They tell me (for another site I run) how much bandwidth I've used each month and also divide the usage for uploading and downloading. So, it seems like this data can be measured, and I'd like to be able to do it myself. To put it simply, what is the conventional method for measuring the bandwidth usage of my server?

• PHP PDO changes remote host to local hostname

  I'm trying to connect to a remote mysql server using PDO. However, regardless of the hostname or ip address i supply in the dsn, when the script is run it always reverts the address to the hostname of the local server where the webserver is running. Google suggests this could be something to do with SELinux and apaches ability to connect to remote databases, however i have SELinux disabled. Distro: Ubuntu 11.04 x64 Apache version: 2.2.17 PHP Version: PHP 5.3.5-1ubuntu7.11 with Suhosin-Patch (cli) Edit: Added code as requested. Though i dont believe this is an issue with my coding as it works fine on the local server, but doesnt allow remote connection. public function db_connect($driver, $dbhost, $dbname, $user, $pass) { $dsn = $driver . • Desperate help using PHP's $_SERVER["DOCUMENT_ROOT"] on a web server?

  I've spent the past few months building a website on localhost. Throughout the site, instead of using relative paths, I used $_SERVER["DOCUMENT_ROOT"] to access the root of my server so I could reference files from there. However, I just decided to upload my site to 000webhost. As I soon found out, and for those of you who use them, you are probably aware, that their server root is different than your actual directory in which you upload your files. I believe it's virtual hosting... anyway, my $_SERVER["DOCUMENT_ROOT"] now throws errors along the lines of this on the site: Warning: include_once() [function.include-once]: open_basedir restriction in effect. File(/usr/local/apache/htdocs/mypath) is not within the allowed path(s) Every other site I looked at said that you should just replace $_SERVER["DOCUMENT_ROOT"] with the home directory provided to you by 000webhost. However, if I want to change hosting services in the future, I'm screwed. Is there any way to use $_SERVER to access a set virtual directory or use htaccess or something to make my code work? I tried using DocumentRoot in a htaccess file in my root directory, but it threw a 404 error when trying to access the page. I'm in desperate need... can anyone help me?

There's actually quite a few of these requests over at least the few days - so it naturally piqued my interested. Searching Google simply seems to produce a very long list of websites which make their Apache access logs publicly available... Is this some weird indication that we're being targeted? And by who?

• Big Data – Buzz Words: What is MapReduce – Day 7 of 21

  In yesterday’s blog post we learned what is Hadoop. In this article we will take a quick look at one of the four most important buzz words which goes around Big Data – MapReduce. What is MapReduce? MapReduce was designed by Google as a programming model for processing large data sets with a parallel, distributed algorithm on a cluster. Though, MapReduce was originally Google proprietary technology, it has been quite a generalized term in the recent time. MapReduce comprises a Map() and Reduce() procedures. Procedure Map() performance filtering and sorting operation on data where as procedure Reduce() performs a summary operation of the data. This model is based on modified concepts of the map and reduce functions commonly available in functional programing. The library where procedure Map() and Reduce() belongs is written in many different languages. The most popular free implementation of MapReduce is Apache Hadoop which we will explore tomorrow. Advantages of MapReduce Procedures The MapReduce Framework usually contains distributed servers and it runs various tasks in parallel to each other. There are various components which manages the communications between various nodes of the data and provides the high availability and fault tolerance. Programs written in MapReduce functional styles are automatically parallelized and executed on commodity machines. The MapReduce Framework takes care of the details of partitioning the data and executing the processes on distributed server on run time. During this process if there is any disaster the framework provides high availability and other available modes take care of the responsibility of the failed node. As you can clearly see more this entire MapReduce Frameworks provides much more than just Map() and Reduce() procedures; it provides scalability and fault tolerance as well. A typical implementation of the MapReduce Framework processes many petabytes of data and thousands of the processing machines. How do MapReduce Framework Works? A typical MapReduce Framework contains petabytes of the data and thousands of the nodes. Here is the basic explanation of the MapReduce Procedures which uses this massive commodity of the servers. Map() Procedure There is always a master node in this infrastructure which takes an input. Right after taking input master node divides it into smaller sub-inputs or sub-problems. These sub-problems are distributed to worker nodes. A worker node later processes them and does necessary analysis. Once the worker node completes the process with this sub-problem it returns it back to master node. Reduce() Procedure All the worker nodes return the answer to the sub-problem assigned to them to master node. The master node collects the answer and once again aggregate that in the form of the answer to the original big problem which was assigned master node. The MapReduce Framework does the above Map () and Reduce () procedure in the parallel and independent to each other. All the Map() procedures can run parallel to each other and once each worker node had completed their task they can send it back to master code to compile it with a single answer. This particular procedure can be very effective when it is implemented on a very large amount of data (Big Data). • How to Browse Without a Trace with an Ubuntu Live CD

  No matter how diligently you clear your cache and erase your history, web browsing leaves traces on your computer. If you need keep your browsing private, then an Ubuntu Live CD is the answer. The key to this trick is that the Live CD environment runs completely in RAM, so things like your cache, cookies, and history don’t get saved to a persistent storage location. On a hard drive, even deleted files can be recovered, but once a computer is turned off the data stored in RAM is unrecoverable. In addition, since the Ubuntu Live CD environment is the same no matter what computer you use it on, there’s very little identifying information that a website can use to track you! The first step is to either burn an Ubuntu Live CD, or prepare a non-persistent Ubuntu USB flash drive. Ubuntu treats non-persistent flash drives like CDs, so files will not be written to it, but if you’re paranoid, then using a physical CD ensures that nothing gets written to a storage device. Boot up from the CD or flash drive, and choose to Run Ubuntu from the CD or flash drive if prompted (for more detailed instructions on booting from a CD or USB drive, see this article, or our guide on booting from a flash drive even if your BIOS won’t let you). Once the graphical Ubuntu environment comes up, you can click on the Firefox icon at the top of the screen to start browsing. If your browsing requires Flash, then you can install it by clicking on System at the top-left of the screen, then Administration > Synaptic Package Manager. Click on Settings at the top of the Synaptic window, and then select Repositories. Add a check in the checkbox with the label ending in “multiverse”. Click Close. Click the Reload button in the main Synaptic window. The list of available packages will reload. When they’ve reloaded, type “restricted” in the Quick search box. Right-click on ubuntu-restricted-extras and select Mark for Installation. It will note a number of other packages that will be installed. This list includes audio and video codecs, so after installing these, you should be able to play downloaded movies and songs. Click Mark to accept the installation of these other packages. Once you return to the main Synaptic window, click the Apply button and go through the dialogs to finish the installation of Flash and the other useful packages. If you open up Firefox now, you’ll have no problems using websites that use Flash. When you’re done browsing and shut down or restart your computer, all traces of your web browsing will be gone. It’s a bit of work compared to just using a privacy-centric browser, but if it’s very important that your browsing leave no traces on your hard drive, an Ubuntu Live CD is your best bet.   Hi all, I am in the process of automating the backups from various servers to a central point then pushing those config changes into a git repo so i can track any changes over time. The rest of the scripts are working well, I can copy / rsync the files across the network to a central point. The last script is to get the config files to be put into / updated in repository.
