  As developers we often spend a large part of our day staring at code within Visual Studio.  If you are like me, after awhile the default VS text color scheme starts to get a little boring. The good news is that Visual Studio allows you to completely customize the editor background and text colors to whatever you want – allowing you to tweak them to create the experience that is “just right” for your eyes and personality.  You can then optionally export/import your color scheme preferences to an XML file via the Tools->Import and Export Settings menu command. • Incrementing Assembly Version in TFS Builds and its affect over Other Build Definitions

  A very common scenario while performing TFS builds is to increment version number of the assemblies. There are quite a few approaches of which I would like to share two links: Ewald Hofman’s Approach: http://www.ewaldhofman.nl/post/2010/05/13/Customize-Team-Build-2010-e28093-Part-5-Increase-AssemblyVersion.aspx#id_02e7b082-ce95-49a9-92e9-7dc88887b377 Richard Bank’s Approach : http://www.richard-banks.org/2010/07/how-to-versioning-builds-with-tfs-2010.html   Both these approaches work well, however there are scenarios where Editing and Checking–in the Assembly version information can create problems with Build Definitions meant for Continuous Integration, or gated Check-ins. You can suppress the Continuous Integration Builds while checking in the Assembly info file by just putting a comment “***NO_CI***” as specified by Ewald in his blog. However, if you have Gated Checkin in place, this can turn out to be difficult to suppress, I myself tried to suppress the Build Trigger during the check in process but things doesn’t turn out well. That’s where Richard’s solution comes as handy. Both the solutions have their own pros and cons, which I believe can only be experienced over a period of time. In case of Richard’s solution I believe that we don’t have any history of the Assembly Version Info file and when you take latest of the solution the information will be lost. If you notice closely, that suppressing the Continuous Integration (the NO_CI approach in check in comments) is a workaround provided by Microsoft, however I didn’t find anything to suppress the gated Checkin so far. Suggestions or Findings are most welcome.

• SQL Server 2008 R2 Installation and the Phantom of SQL Server 2005 Express

  Today I’ve happy started to install SQL Server 2008R2 on my development machine, which has this software installed Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard SQL Server 2008 SP1 CU5 Visual Studio 2008 SP1 BOL October 2009 AdventuresWorks2008 Databases SR4 Visual Studio 2010 RTM So, all the basic standard stuff. SQL Server 2008 R2 installation went smooth ‘till somewhere in the middle, where the rule engine checks that software pre-requisite are satisfied before starting to copy files. Here I had this @][@@[?!?! error: “The SQL Server 2005 Express Tools are installed. To continue, remove the SQL Server 2005 Express Tools.” Fun enough, I don’t have and I’ve never had SQL Server 2005 Express on my machine. Armed with patience I analyzed the install log here C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\Log\yyyymmdd_hhmmss\Detail.txt and I’ve found that the rule “Sql2005SsmsExpressFacet” is the one in charge of this check and it look for existance of the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\ShellSEM (on x86) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\ShellSEM (on x64) In my registry I’ve found that key existsing, due to the installation of the uber-cool Red-Gate SQL Search. I removed the registry key and here it is! SQL Server 2008 R2 is installing while I’m writing this post. A note to Microsoft: can you please add more detailed information on the setup while such error happens. Just saying “you have SQL Server 2005 Express installed” is not enough. Please show us what the rule look for and why it has failed directly in the Detailed Report, so that we don’t have to spend time to look for the needle in the logs. • Setting alias in Windows PowerShell

  In PowerShell, I type: PS C: sal cdp "cd 'C:\Users\ec\Documents\Visual Studio 2010\Projects'" I get no error from this, and PS C: gal cdp shows definition as: cd 'C:\Users\ec\Documents\Visual Studio 2010\Projects' But, when I try to use cdp, I get this: Cannot resolve alias 'cdp' because it refers to term 'cd 'C:\Users\ec\Documents\Visual Studio 2010\Projects'', which is not recognized as a cmdlet, function, operable program, or script file. Verify the term and try again. At line:1 char:4 + cdp <<<<  + CatergoryInfo   : ObjectNotFound (dsp:String) [], CommandNotFoundException  + FullyQualifiedErrorId   : AliasNotResolvedException I am guessing that this is trivially easy. So I apologize in advance if that is the case. I have googled and googled and have also read through Windows PowerShell Cookbook.

• Code Bubbles: Disruption comes to the IDE

  If you’re like me, you might see the open source Eclipse IDE as a copy or, more generously, a port of the Microsoft’s Visual Studio for the non-.NET world.  It’s not that Microsoft invented the IDE (I would credit Borland with that), but they really took the idea and ran with it for the first version of Visual Studio .NET in 2002.  The question is whether someone outside of Microsoft could take the modern IDE yet another major step forward in both principle and productivity. I think that has actually happened already, and I think the innovator in question is a second-year Computer Science PhD student at Brown, named Andrew Bragdon.  His project, which he calls Code Bubbles, is an IDE that allows for editing, debugging and exploration of code in “bubbles” which remind me a little bit of the discrete note tiles on OneNote…but they’re much more than that.  Bubbles actually allow for call stack traversal, saved debug sessions, sophisticated breakpoint and value watch behaviors and more.  And because bubbles, unlike windows, are borderless, and focus on code fragments rather than whole files, the de-cluttering effect is unbelievably liberating.  The best way to understand what Code Bubbles does is to watch the screencast video:     Code Bubbles is an IDE for Java development.  Why didn’t Microsoft come up with something like this for .NET devs?  Between the existing features in Visual Studio 2010, its WPF code editor, and the fact that OneNote’s UI bears some affinity to Code Bubbles’, it’s interesting that Microsoft still has not thought outside of its own “box” to get us something like this. Heck, that’s easy for me to say.  But it’s easy for you to say that you’d like something like this in Visual Studio sometime soon.  That’s because the ASP.NET site within UserVoice is taking votes on this very issue.  Just click this link and vote!   I have one upstream server and 17 downstream (configured as replicas). I'm getting this error in one of them and I'm stuck: "An error occurred with the server's data store". • Backup strategy for Windows Server 2008 R2 and Hyper-V

  I am in the process of planning a Hyper-V deployment with SCVMM 2008 R2. I have several VMs on VMWare Player (temporary solution) for stuff like Sharepoint 2007, 2010, and a couple of other server apps. I want to develop a resilient backup plan for this. On the software side, Data Protection Manager 2010 will support all of the server apps I run (sQL Server 2008 R2, Sharepoint, Exchange, etc). But on the hardware side (storage), what is the best way to go? Drobo seems to have issues with Hyper-V juding by a few threads on here and doesn't support DPM 2010 (which is in beta anyway) but not even the 2007 version (see http://www.drobo.com/support/best_practices.php). What storage device would work well? Do I need a home server or just an external usb drive? Capacity wise, 2tb will probably be best so I can have a small archive and implement a round-robin system. • Using old code on new version of Visual Studio [migrated]

  I have a project which was started from 90s in C/C++. Therefore, it contains many old coding styles such as K&R-style function declaration, obsolete function, ... The project works fine in Visual Studio 2008, but now I want to use it in the new version of Visual Studio (specifically VS 2010) because we have other projects in Visual Studio 2010/2012. I don't want to have too many versions of Visual Studio on my machine. When I try to compile the old project, Visual Studio throws too many errors. I can fix all of them but I am scared to edit the source code and I want other people to be able to pen it in the old version of VS too. I want the project to remain backwards compatible with VS. My question is how to use the old code in Visual Studio 2010/2012 without changing the code. Or if necessary how do I just fix a few lines of code, but make sure it won't cause an error if someone else opens that code in the older version of VS. Is there a way to tell newer Visual Studio versions to use older compiler flags or something like that?

• Reasons why mod_jk wouldn't work and how to trace them

  I've been using one server, then I reinstalled everything on another server, and the mod_jk stopped working. Here is the situation: apache 2.0 sitting "in front" mod_jk used to connect to the apache to tomcat tomcat 6.0.26 used to server the actual requests I followed this tutorial. The result is: accessing http://mysite.com opens the index.html in /var/www/ accessing http://mysite.com:8080/ works OK the logs at /var/logs/apache2 show everything is OK: [Mon Mar 29 22:01:53.310 2010] [28349:3075389184] [info] init_jk::mod_jk.c (2830): mod_jk/1.2.26 initialized [Mon Mar 29 22:01:53 2010] [warn] No JkShmFile defined in httpd.conf. Using default /var/log/apache2/jk-runtime-status [Mon Mar 29 22:01:53 2010] [notice] Apache/2.2.9 (Debian) mod_jk/1.2.26 configured -- resuming normal operations I compared the server.xml, jk.conf, sites-enabled/mysite from the new server to those from the old one and they are identical. The domain name is the same (I updated the DNS record today, and it has refreshed successfully) So the question is, what can go wrong? Is there another place where problems would be logged, if such occur?
