• Problem with tomcat and getLocalHost exception

  I'm running a Linux server named S1 in a "cloud" server, and when tomcat 6.0.24 starts, I get the exception: org.apache.catalina.connector.Connector pause SEVERE: Protocol handler pause failed java.net.UnknownHostException: S1: S1 at java.net.InetAddress.getLocalHost(InetAddress.java:1353) at org.apache.jk.common.ChannelSocket.unLockSocket(ChannelSocket.java:485) Which then leads to: ERROR ehcache.Cache - Unable to set localhost. This prevents creation of a GUID. Cause was: Sjira1: S1 java.net.UnknownHostException: S1: S1 at java.net.InetAddress.getLocalHost(InetAddress.java:1353) at net.sf.ehcache.Cache.<clinit>(Cache.java:143) My hosts file is: 127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain (valid-ip-address) S1 S1.(valid domain name) ping S1 and S1.(valid domain name) return valid ip address nslookup S1.(valid domain name) returns valid ip address nslookup S1 throws ** server can't find S1: NXDOMAIN Any ideas about how to fix this ? • SLES 11 - ocfs2 - Locking does not appear to work

  Hi I have two SLES 11 servers that are SAN attached to a Clarion CX-340. The SAN partition has been formatted with ocfs2 and I have both machines setup in a cluster and the cluster is running (all appears to be normal). I have a small java application as a locking test and when I run the application on both machines at the same time, I should get the lock on one server and the other should refuse the lock since the first already holds a lock on that file but in this case both servers get a lock on the same file. Basically my cluster.conf looks like this: node: ip_port = 7777 ip_address = 192.168.10.121 number = 1 name = osrsles10node1 cluster = osrsles10 node: ip_port = 7777 ip_address = 192.168.10.122 number = 2 name = osrsles10node2 cluster = osrsles10 cluster: node_count = 2 name = osrsles10 Please ask for any other info - I really need these locks to be exclusive to each server. • Mysql performance problem & Failed DIMM

  Hi I have a dedicated mysql database server which has been having some performance problems recently, under normal load the server will be running fine, then suddenly out of the blue the performance will fall off a cliff. The server isn't using the swap file and there is 12GB of RAM in the server, more than enough for its needs. After contacting my hosting comapnies support they have discovered that there is a failed 2GB DIMM in the server and have scheduled to replace it tomorow morning. My question is could a failed DIMM result in the performance problems I am seeing or is this just coincidence? My worry is that they will replace the ram tomorrow but the problems will persist and I will still be lost of explanations so I am just trying to think ahead. The reason I ask is that there is plenty of RAM in the server, more than required and simply missing 2GB should be a problem, so if this failed DIMM is causing these performance problems then the OS must be trying to access the failed DIMM and slowing down as a result. Does that sound like a credible explanation? • Does MS Forefront TMG cache authentication?

  I'm testing a client machine that makes requests to a biztalk server using a forefront machine as a web proxy. Upon first test I put in an invalid name/password into the receive port and received the correct error message (407). Then, I set the correct name/password and everything worked correctly. From there, I kept the correct information in the receive port but put an invalid name/password into the send adapter but the process completed successfully (should have failed with 407). I've ensured that both the recieve and send ports are not bypassing the proxy for local addresses. So the only thing that seems to make sense is if TMG is caching the authentication request coming from the machine I'm working on. Is this thinking correct, and if so, does anyone know how to disable it in TMG?

  I am attempting to use the find command and came across an article at http://www.linux.ie/newusers/beginners-linux-guide/find.php which states The wildcard character is escaped with a slash so BASH sends a literal asterisk to the find utility as an argument instead of performing filename expansion and passing any number of files in as arguments. for the command find . -name up\*. Being new to the world of Linux I don't quite understand how the use of a backslash which is meant to escape the meta character * is interpreted and returns results as though as it is being passed to find. Does it mean if I use the -name option I have to use a backslash to pass a wildcard and if I don't use -name I don't have to use a backslash?

  I'm using pidgin on both, windows and linux on several pc. To sync my log, I use dropbox. For linux, it's easy. Just a matter of symlink. However, I don't know how to sync it on windows, without manual copy-paste once I'm done on windows. So, is there any solution to my problem? pidgin plugin, maybe? Update As MarkM's answer, I did this to solve my problem: backup and delete current log (it's located at C:\Users\{your user name}\Roaming\.purple\logs) mklink /D "C:\Users\{your user name}\Roaming\.purple\logs" "E:\My Dropbox\somepath\purplelogs" "C:\Users\{your user name}\Roaming\.purple\logs" is where you want your symlink at "E:\My Dropbox\somepath\purplelogs" is there you have your dropboxed logs.

  We have a few websites that we are running on one instance of IIS that need to be mapped for each of their domain names. For example. Site A has the domain name coolness.com Site B has the domain name 6to8Weeks.com Site C has the domain name PhatTech.com When I look at the "Web Site Identification" section of the IIS configuration window, I notice that I can specify an IP address and port, but if I click the Advanced button, I can also configure the site based on host header values as well. How do I configure each site in IIS? Ideally I would like them to all be able to listen to port 80, so I don't have weird URLs, but I'm not sure if I do this using headers, IP addresses, both, or something else.

  Is it possible to configure Bind9 or other DNS to resolve the domain name of a machine into different IPs based on the subnet of the requesting client? e.g. Say the same service is running on 2 different application servers at different geographical points and based on the incoming request to resolve the domain name, the name server provides the IP of the application server based on the requesting client's IP, so the service could be offered by servers that are geographically closer to the client. In short, something like a CDN but just the IP resolution part based on the client's subnet. Is this configurable in any DNS?

• Overriding Debian default groups from LDAP

  This is a thing that has always bothered me: how am I best to handle Debian standard groups for LDAP users? Debian has a number of groups defined by default, e.g. plugdev, audio, cdrom and so on. These control access in standard Debian installs. When I want a user from LDAP to be a member of the `audio' group on all machines they log in to, I've tried a few different things: Adding them to the local group on the machine (this works but is hard to maintain) Creating a group in LDAP with the same name and a different GID then adding the user to that group (breaks reverse / forward GID mapping, doesn't seem to work) Creating a group in LDAP with the same name and same GID and adding the user to that group (doesn't seem to work at all, things don't see the LDAP group members) Creating a group in LDAP with the same name and same GID then removing the local group (this works but upsets Debian's maintenance scripts during upgrades that check for local system sanity) What's the best practice for this scenario?

• Windows Server 2008, IIS7 and Windows Authentication

  We currently have a development server set up which we are trying to test some Windows authentication ASP.NET code on. We have turned on Windows Authentication in IIS7 on Windows Server 2008 R2 fine, and it asks the user for a username and password as excepted, but the problem is it doesn't appear to accept any credentials. This code for example... Protected Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.Load Page.Title = "Home page for " + User.Identity.Name End Sub ...always returns an empty string. One theory we have is that we dont have Active Directory installed as of yet, we are just testing this by logging on via the machine name not a domain. Is this type of authentication only applicatable to domains (if so we can probably install Active Directory and some test accounts) - or is it possible to get the user identity when logging in using the machine name? Ideally we would like to be able to test this on our local machines (Windows 7 Pro) using our own accounts (again these aren't on a domain) and IIS but this has the same issue as our dev server.   If I do an nslookup on youtube.com, no problem, if I do one with www.youtube.com, failure. See details below. If I do the same from a Windows machine its fine, its when I do it from a Mac workstation that I get the issue. I have rebooted, both server and workstation, I did a changeip, but nothing is working. Any recommendations?

The exceptions are being thrown when trying to access directories that are virtual dirs in IIS, and plain old UNC network shares What the implications for enabling the WebDAV extensions on our live web server? And will this solve our problems with the exceptions in our event log?

• Unknown Host Error, is this a registrar problem or a host problem?

  Hi guys, I am dealing with a barrel of weasels on this one. Ad agency registered the domain in mid-August with Network Solutions. 72 hours ago I updated the DNS to point to a host provided by an associate of the client whose credentials are dubious. The DNS servers are at NETSONIC.NET (NS1 and NS2) and respond to ping no problem. I can FTP to the server using its IP but the name is no go. The name is also no go for tracert and ping: tracert voodoobbqfranchise.com Unable to resolve target system name voodoobbqfranchise.com. ping voodoobbqfranchise.com ping: unknown host voodoobbqfranchise.com I called NetSol and of course their tier one guy swears it must be the host but I insist that an unknown host must be a NetSol issue. Otherwise we'd get somethng like an httpd_conf error after being routed to the Netsonic server. Am I right? Is this an issue at the registrar? TIA JG

Windows 8 cannot join out of the box, so I added the following registry entries: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanWorkstation\Parameters DWORD DomainCompatibilityMode 1 DWORD DNSNameResolutionRequired 0 And now it talks to the Samba server ok, however I get the following error: And I notice that the machine name created on the samba server does not match its name: win-8jq3fg1n74e$:x:30003:30003:Machine:/var/lib/nobody:/bin/false It is like it is using an internal name. • WDS DHCP same server on Windows Server 2008

  I have been struggling with a problem on my Windows Server 2008 for the past 4 - 5 hours and cannot figure out whats wrong. I have tried pretty much everything that I found on google and all the links are purple. Hopefully you guys can help me. I am running a Windows Server 2008 Standard edition with the latest updates as of today. Furthermore I am running a Windows Server 2003. Both are virtual machines on my ESXi 5 server. My network is: 192.168.10.0/24 W2k8: 192.168.10.251 is the PDC running ADS, DHCP and WDS W2k3: 192.168.10.253 AND 192.168.1.175 running Routing and Remote Access and ISA 2006 Enterprise In my internal network (192.168.10.0/24) I have my client machine (192.168.10.10) that runs a VMWare Workstation. I am trying to deploy Windows 7 Home Premium to a virtual machine on my VMWorkstation via PXE. I have set the Workstation's VM network adapter to "bridged" so that it uses the physical network adapter and is connected to my internal network. The DHCP pool is configured to give IP addresses from 192.168.10.10-192.168.10.15 (works for normal clients and is not used up) When I start my VM with the PXE I get the error: PXE-E52:proxyDHCP offers were received. No DHCP offers were received Apperently this means "that means that WDS responded but the DHCP server did not." People suggested to direct the traffic to both WDS and DHCP on the router, since everything is on the same subnet there is no need for that as the broadcast is seen by everyone (WDS and DHCP) No reservation for the virtual mac addrs is made on the DHCP. Furthermore it was suggested to configure the DHCP options: Option 60= PXEClient Option 66= WDS server name or IP address Option 67= Boot file name However, this is not recommended by Microsoft, I tried it and it did not solve my problem. The configuration on the WDS (My System is German therefore the actual naming might be different): PXE response tab: PXE responses is set to "ALL (known and unknown)" DHCP Tab: Do not listen to port 67 is NOT ticked - if I tick this I do not get any responses and the PXE errors gets PXE-E51 that neither DHCP or proxyDHCP were received DHCP-Option 60 for "PXEClient" is ticked The confusing part here is that it is advised in the tab to tick the first option since it is on the same server. Network Configuration Tab: Use the following IP-Address range for Multicast-IP-Address: 224.0.1.0 - 224.0.10.0 Thats not the default one, however it is in the allowed range. The UDP port range is the default since it is not advised to change them. I tried to change the "networkprofile" from 100mbits/1gbits and custom. I am running a 1gbit network with CAT6 cables and 1gbit netgear switch 5 ports. Everything is configured to use 1gbit. The WDS is authorised for the DHCP server. My ISA 2006 configuration: For the internal networking i have configured the following policy array: Allow protocols on internal network including the w2k3 host: 67,68,53,ICMP, 4011 UDP receive, 64001-6500 UDP send receive, 69 UDP send Routing and Remote Access I tried the DHCP relay agent configuration that was suggested as well, but that did not work I would highly appreciate anykind of help because I am pretty much done here with my nerves. • When DNS doesn't cache

  We've had some odd DNS problems over the past couple of days that I don't fully understand. Some of our DNS names stopped resolving for some of our customers due to some 'unknown' server reconfiguration at our DNS provider. The problem seemed to be intermittent i.e. stopped working and started working within a few minutes over a couple of days. I'm no expert on DNS, but I'd have expected DNS caches to prevent this sort of thing from happening - when we need to change an IP address for a DNS record, it can take 24 hours to propogate, so how can our DNS provider be breaking name resolution intermittently for our customers so easily? Shouldn't the DNS caches kick in here? We had a similar problem about a month ago when one of their nameservers 'decided to reload the DNS database from scratch' - this broke our name resolution too. Again, why didn't the caches satisfy the name resolution requests. Any guesses would be appreciated. John

• Unable to restore from Shadow Copy due to long filename

  We have shadow copy enabled on our Windows SBS 2008 server. Attempting to restore a file from shadow copy gave the following error- The source file name(s) are larger than is supported by the file system. Try moving to a location which has a shorter path name, or try renaming to shorter name(s) before attempting this operation. The filename has 67 characters, and it's shadow copy path is 170 characters. These seem to be under the NTFS limits (260?). We tried- Copying to the shortest path possible (C:) Copying to the shortest path possible on both a client computer and the server itself Is it possible to rename files in a shadow copy, before doing the copy? Any idea why the error is appearing despite the filename size appearing to be within limits?

• Ubuntu 10.04 not detecting multiple monitors

  I have 2 graphics cards, the output from the lspci: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV770 [Radeon HD 4850] 02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV710 [Radeon HD 4350] I have one monitor connected to the 4850 and 2 connected to the 4350. However when I go into System Preferences Monitors the only monitor shown is the one connected to the 4850. Is there something I need to enable for it to be able to use the other card? How do I get this to work. Thanks.   I'm trying to understand the difference between the following two terms: *:80 _default_:80 in the Apache configuration file. The documentation here is unclear to me, and the only mailing list conversation that I could find here does not shed any (comprehensible, to me) light on the matter either. I have a bunch of name-based virtual hosts declared like this: <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName example.com ... and I'd like to have an entry that fires when none of those match, i.e. when a request comes in without a virtual host name, or with a virtual host name that has not been declared. Should I use *:80 or default:80?

• Windows authentication through IE - specify the domain

  This question really relates to allowing to logon to a SharePoint installation from home but I guess it's a general IIS security question. When the login box pops up to collect the windows credentials the user can just type in their user name on Safari/Chrome/FF and they can login correctly. On IE authentication fails as it seems to pass their local machine name by default and the user needs to replace this with domain\user. Not a big problem in some cases but we'd prefer it if the users didn't have to enter the domain name portion. Is this simply a feature of IE that we can't control or is their something we can do with IIS/AD etc that will allow us to provide a default domain if one isn't specified?
