• BigInteger or not BigInteger?

  In Java, most of the primitive types are signed (one bit is used to represent the +/-), and therefore when I am exceed the limits of this type, I can get many strange things, like negative numbers. In the BigInteger class, I have no limits and there are some helpful functions there but it is pretty depressing to convert your beautiful code to work with the BigInteger class, specially when primitive operators don't work there and you must use functions from this class. I was wondering if you had this problem, and if you have any better solution than the BigInteger class? Thank you.

• Python: Decent config file format

  I'd like to use a configuration file format which supports key value pairs and nestable, repeatable structures, and which is as light on syntax as possible. I'm imagining something along the lines of: cachedir = /var/cache mail_to = [email protected] job { name = my-media frequency = 1 day source { from = /home/michael/Images source { } source { } } job { } I'd be happy with something using significant-whitespace as well. JSON requires too many explicit syntax rules (quoting, commas, etc.). YAML is actually pretty good, but would require the jobs to be defined as a YAML list, which I find slightly awkward to use.

• Jasper Report doc export margin problem

  Hi there, Im using Jasper Reports to generate a word (docx) document but I have a problem when I want to try to print the doc. The exporter messes up the margins of the page. Does anyone know how to prevent that from happening. I know how to set the margin in iReport, but it just makes the data generate further from the page borders, but the margins in word which can be adjusted at the top of the page is laying right at the edge. Has anyone had this problem? Thanks for the help, in advance, Nods

• valueOf() vs. toString() in Javascript

  In Javascript every object has a valueOf() and toString() method. I would have thought that the toString() method got invoked whenever a string conversion is called for, but apparently it is trumped by valueOf(). For example, the code var x = {toString: function() {return "foo"; }, valueOf: function() {return 42; }}; window.console.log ("x="+x); window.console.log ("x="+x.toString()); will print x=42 x=foo This strikes me as backwards .. if x were a complex number, for example, I would want valueOf() to give me its magnitude (so that zero would become special), but whenever I wanted to convert to a string I would want something like "a+bi". And I wouldn't want to have to call toString() explicitly in contexts that implied a string. Is this just the way it is?

  Hello all, I'm struggling with this, maybe some of you can help... I have a home page slideshow with large images at www.theoribeiro.com using jQuery Cycle plugin Images are large and sometimes with slow connections (but even in fast ones) the behavior of the slideshow start is pretty ugly, showing the image all of a sudden or half-loaded. I want to make sure that at least the 2 or 3 first images are loaded before the slideshow starts and meanwhile I want to run a loading animated gif, then I want to fade in the first image. I searched a lot on the internet and on the forums and tried loads of stuff with my limited knowledge of javascript and jQuery but could't come up with a solution. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

  I've got a column in a database which contains company names, and customer names all in one field... what I'd like to do is keep the CompanyName column completely intact, but wherever there is a comma in the CompanyName I'd like to take that information and populate it into a FirstName and LastName field. So that basically... Before: CompanyName: Big Company Inc Smith, John Sue, Maggie After: CompanyName: Big Company Inc Smith, John Sue, Maggie LastName: Smith Sue FirstName: John Maggie This one is pretty dang tricky for me... • python: iif or (x ? a : b)

  If Python would support the (x ? a : b) syntax from C/C++, I would write: print paid ? ("paid: " + str(paid) + " €") : "not paid" I really don't want to have an if-check and two independent prints here (because that is only an example above, in my code, it looks much more complicated and would really be stupid to have almost the same code twice). However, Python does not support this operator or any similar operator (afaik). What is the easiest/cleanest/most common way to do this? I have searched a bit and seen someone defining an iif(cond,iftrue,iffalse) function, inspired from Visual Basic. I wondered if I really have to add that code and if/why there is no such basic function in the standard library.

  I have an NSBitmapImageRep that is created like this: NSBitmapImageRep *imageRep = [[NSBitmapImageRep alloc] initWithBitmapDataPlanes:NULL pixelsWide:waveformSize.width pixelsHigh:waveformSize.height bitsPerSample:8 samplesPerPixel:4 hasAlpha:YES isPlanar:YES colorSpaceName:NSCalibratedRGBColorSpace bytesPerRow:0 bitsPerPixel:0]; Now I want to access the pixel data so I get a pointer to the pixel planes using unsigned char *bitmapData; [imageRep getBitmapDataPlanes:&bitmapData]; According to the Documentation this returns a C array of five character pointers. But how can it do that? since the type of the argument is unsigned char **, it can only return an array of chars, but not an array of char pointers. So, this leaves me wondering how to access the individual pixels. Do you have an idea how to do that? (I know there is the method – setColor:atX:y:, but it seems to be pretty slow if invoked for every single pixel of a big bitmap.)

• How to validate HTTP request headers before receiving request body using WCF

  I'm implementing a REST service using WCF which will be used to upload very large files. The HTTP headers in this request will communicate information which will be validated prior to allowing the upload to proceed (things like permissions, available disk space, etc). It's possible this validation will fail resulting in an error response. I'd like to do this validation prior to the client sending the body of the request, so it has a chance to detect failure before uploading potentially gigabytes of data. RESTful web services use the HTTP 1.1 Expect: 100-continue in the request to implement this. For example Amazon S3's REST API can validate your key and ACLs in response to an object PUT operation, returning 100 Continue if all is well, indicating you may proceed to send your data. I've rummaged around the WCF documentation and I just can't see a way to accomplish this without doing some pretty low-level hooking into the HTTP request processing pipeline. How would you suggest I solve this problem?

• Cython Speed Boost vs. Usability

  I just came across Cython, while I was looking out for ways to optimize Python code. I read various posts on stackoverflow, the python wiki and read the article "General Rules for Optimization". Cython is something which grasps my interest the most; instead of writing C-code for yourself, you can choose to have other datatypes in your python code itself. The code which I have used here is pure python code, and all I have changed is the interpreter. In this case, if cython is this good, then why do people still use the traditional Python interpretor? Are there any reliability issues for Cython?

I wrote the following code to do this with 2 file handles, but it does not yield the result I am looking for. I imagine this is a simple error on my part. • Set tag and hidden for objects on custom UITableViewCell

  I am re-using Apple's AdvancedTableViewCells example to create a custom, fast-scrolling tableview. Specifically, I am using their CompositeSubviewBasedApplicationCell method which draws the content on the tableviewcell with drawRect Everything works, but how do you hide a label or set the tag for a label or image using their method? Doing it this way is pretty new to me (without IB), so I apologize ahead of time if it's something easy. • How to give you website customers a secure feeling

  I was wondering how you can give your website customers the confidence that you are not tinkering with the database values. I am planning on running a website which falls in the realm of an online game. There is some kind of credit system involved that people have to pay for. Now I was wondering how sites like this ensure there customers that there is no foul play in the database itself. As I am the database admin i can pretty much change all the values from within without anyone knowing i did. Hence letting someone win that does not rightfully is the winner. Is it maybe an option to decrypt en encrypt the credits people have so i can't change them. Or is there maybe a company i can hire that checks my company for foul play.

• Facebook dotnet app - not finding any user info

  I am just starting to learn how to create a facebook app. I am using the MS dotnet libraries. Following this example and info: http://fbtutorial.qsh.eu/section1/fbml/step6.aspx I added some code in the default.aspx to print out the user name - but I am not getting any user information back. I understand that some user information is available even if the application is not authorized, such as name or user id. Example this code returns u=null: Facebook.Schema.user u = Master.Api.Users.GetInfo(); And this returns 0: this.Master.Api.Session.UserId Any suggestions as to why no information is getting returned? • Overlay 2d weapon sprite over character sprite ?

  Hello, I'm working on a game where my character needs to be able to have different weapons. For that I think that somehow overlaying the weapon over the moving sprite would be the correct choice, but I'm not sure about how could I do this. Assuming my Character spritesheet looks like this: And my preliminar weapon spritesheet ( haven't decided on a fixed square size for the weapon yet ), looks like this: How would you make the overlay to set the weapon correctly over the character hand for each of his frames? I know that one way would be just to have a weapon frame the same size as my character sprites, and overlay those too, but I think that if the game has way too much weapons (say 15 different kinds of one hand weaps) this could get pretty insane ( having one weapon sprite sheet the same size as the character sprite sheet for each type of weapon ) Do you guys have any advice on how to implement this? (supporting overlaying the weapon sprites over the character sprites) Thanks!

• Text editing best practices (with tags, etc.)

  Hi there, I want to create a text field with some text, that is styled with tags. Think of MS Word, some ext is bold, some is a headline, etc. The tags that style the text are not visible to the user, he just sees the text in bold. How do I preserve these tags? I mean when I backspace over the closing bold-tag, for example, how do I preserve that and prevent that the rest of the text is now bold until the end? I guess this is a pretty basic question for experiences programmers. Are there any algorithms or best practices? This problem surely has been solved before, any pointers? (If this is of any concern, I develop for the iPhone OS and the text field will be a UITextView, but my question is more general I guess.) Thanks in advance!

• Django: test failing on a view with @login_required

  Hi all, I'm trying to build a test for a view that's decorated with @login_required, since I failed to make it work, I did a simple test and still can't make it pass. Here is the code for the simple test and the view: def test_login(self): user = self._create_new_user() self.assertTrue(user.is_active) login = self.client.login(username=user.username, password=self.data['password1']) self.failUnless(login, 'Could not log in') response = self.client.get('/accounts/testlogin/') self.assertEqual(response.status_code, 200) @login_required def testlogin(request): print 'testlogin !! ' return HttpResponse('OK') _create_new_user() is saving the user and there is a test inside that method to see that is working. The test fails in the response.status_code, returning 302 and the response instance is of a HttpResponseRedirect, is redirecting it as if not logged in. Any clue? I'm missing something? • Identify cause of hundreds of AJP threads in Tomcat

  We have two Tomcat 6.0.20 servers fronted by Apache, with communication between the two using AJP. Tomcat in turn consumes web services on a JBoss cluster. This morning, one of the Tomcat machines was using 100% of CPU on 6 of the 8 cores on our machine. We took a heap dump using JConsole, and then tried to connect JVisualVM to get a profile to see what was taking all the CPU, but this caused Tomcat to crash. At least we had the heap dump! I have loaded the heap dump into Eclipse MAT, where I have found that we have 565 instances of java.lang.Thread. Some of these, obviously, are entirely legitimate, but the vast majority are named "ajp-6009-XXX" where XXX is a number. I know my way around Eclipse MAT pretty well, but haven't been able to find an explanation for it. If anyone has some pointers as to why Tomcat may be doing this, or some hints on finding out why using Eclipse MAT, that'd be appreciated!

  I have a solution with several Silverlight Class Libraries and a Silverlight Application in it. I was originally built in VS 2008 with Silverlight 3.0. What changes do I need to make so that it builds using Silverlight 4.0? I already have VS 2010 and the Silverlight 4.0 toolkit installed. When I opened the project it seems to have upgraded to .NET 4.0 in my ASP.NET Web Project but not the Silverlight projects. Pretty sure they are still building against .NET 3.5 and Silverlight 3.0. • showSettings callback in Flex?

  I am pretty new to flex, so forgive me if this is an obvious question. Is there a way to open the Security.showSettings (flash.system.Security) with a callback? or at least to detect if it is currently open or not? My flex application is used for streaming audio, and is normally controlled by javascript, so I keep it hidden for normal use (via absolute positioning it off the page). When I need microphone access I need to make the flash settings dialog visible, which works fine, I move it into view and open the dialog. When the user closes it, I need to move it back off the screen so they don't see an empty flex app sitting there after they change their settings. thanks :)

• Weird Facebooker Plugin & Pushion Passenger ModRails Production Error

  I have an application (Rails 2.3.5) that I'm deploying to production Linux/Apache server using the latest Phushion Passenger/Apache Module 2.2.11 version. After deploying my original application, it returns a 500 error with no logging to production log. So I created a minimal test rails application, with some active record calls to the database to print out a list of objects to the home controller/my index page. I also cleared out all plugins. That works fine in the production environment. Then I one by one introduced each plugin that I'm using one at a time. Every plugin works fine EXCEPT facebooker. Every time I load the facebooker plugin into my app/vendor/plugins directory (via script git etc) my test application break (500 error - no error logging). Everytime I remove the facebooker plugin my test application works. Has anyone seen this before/ have any solutions? I saw this solution but didn't see it in the facebooker code.

• How to make TinyMCE work inside an UpdatePanel?

  I'm trying to do something that many people seem to have been able to do but which I am unable to implement any solution. The TinyMCE control works pretty well in an asp.net form until you enclose it with an UpdatePanel, which then breaks after postback. I have tried some fixes like the RegisterClientScriptBlock method, but am still unsuccessful, I still lose the tinyMCE control after postback. Below is a full test project (VS 2008) provided with a Control outside UpdatePanel and one inside, with a button on each to generate postback. Also in the project I have a EditorTest control which include commented code of some calls I tried, in case it gives anyone any ideas.
