• Help find correct alsa model for onboard sound (alc887?) that will work with jack and have correct mixer setup

  I have a Gigabyte GA-MA74GMT-S2 motherboard. I am using Jack for sound - connected to ALSA. I am running Ubuntu 12.04. aplay -l reports card 0: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 0: ALC887 Analog [ALC887 Analog] The problem is that the default setup, that alsa decides to use, causes stuttering and xruns no matter how generous I set the frames/period or periods/buffer etc. Also, Jack works fine if I plug in an external USB sound system and use that. My processor is an AMD phenom x4 945, and I have 8GB ram, and Video card is Geforce GTX550 Ti, all of which should be quite capable enough. I also tried Pulseaudio and that works fine, but I need to use Jack At first I thought it might be an interrupt conflict, but I have found that adding "options snd-hda-intel model=generic" to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf causes it to play correctly, but the limited mixer setup lacks controls I need - so this setup isn't good enough. Still, it seems to prove it isn't a hardware conflict. I have tried many other models, such as 3stack, 6stack, auto and even basic, and they all suffer from the stuttering. I eventually found "options snd-hda-intel model=3stack-6ch-intel" works without stuttering, and mixer is much closer to what it needs to be. Can anyone help on how to get a correct and accurate model for ALSA to use? • BUILD 2013&ndash;Day 2 Summary

  Originally posted on: http://geekswithblogs.net/tmurphy/archive/2013/06/28/build-2013ndashday-2-summary.aspx Day 1 rocked.  So how could they top that?  By having more goodies to give away!  During the keynote they announced that attendees would get one year of Office 365, 100 GB of SkyDrive and one year of Adobe Cloud Service.  Overall they key note was long with more information shot at you than you could possibly absorb.  They went about 20 minutes over time which made me think that they could have split it to a 3rd keynote and given us a better idea on some of these topics and perhaps addressed the one open question that was floating around Twitter.  That is, what is going to happen with XBox development.  It sounded like there was a quick side mention of that, but I missed it. The rest of the day was packed with great sessions full of Windows 8, Azure and Windows Phone goodness.  I had planned on attending Scott Hanselman’s talk, but they had so many people this they had to push to an overflow room.  Stay tuned from session summaries later. The day was topped off by an attendee party across from the San Francisco Giant’s ball park.  It was kind of quirky and and fun.  They set it up on one of the piers in the bay and had food served by food trucks.  You would be surprised how good the food was.  Add in some pool tables, fooseball, video games, a DJ, a comedian/musician and plenty of spirits and it was a great way to end day 2. del.icio.us Tags: BUILD 2013

• Converting 2D coordinates from multiple viewpoints into 3D coordinates

  Here's the situation. I've got a set of 2D coordinates that specify a point on an image. These 2D coordinates relate to an event that happened in a 3D space (video game). I have 5 images with the same event point on it, so I have 5 sets of 2D coordinates for a single 3D coordinate. I've tried everything I can think to translate these 2D coordinates into 3D coordinates, but the math just escapes me. I have a good estimate of the coordinates from which each image was taken, they're not perfect but they're close. I tried simplifying this and opening up Cinema 4D, a 3D modeling application. I placed 5 cameras at the coordinates where the pictures were taken and lined up the pictures with the event points for each one and tried to find a link, but nothing was forthcoming. I know it's a math question, but like I said, I just can't get it. I took physics in high school 6 years ago, but we didn't deal with a whole lot of this sort of thing. Any help will be very much appreciated, I've been thinking on it for quite a while and I just can't come up with anything.

• How to improve battery life on Samsung 13.3” Series 7 Ultra (NP730U3E-S01AU)?

  Recently I've bought a Series 7 Ultra Samsung ultrabook and decided to change the OS from originally installed Windows 8 to Ubuntu 14.04LTS. However, it's difficult not to notice great decrease in battery life: on pre-installed Windows 8 battery would last for about 6 hours while on Ubuntu it's almost empty after 2 hours of same kind of work (wi-fi, web, vlc, spotify, intellij idea). I'm not here to say that Ubuntu's battery performance is worse than Windows, but to ask for suggestions how to improve the situation (2 hours of work is pretty poor battery life). Can you recommend some sources, applications or tips/tricks that would improve battery life on my ultrabook? I really like the Ubuntu experience, but this makes my machine much less reliable. I suspect that graphic video card might be one of the issues here. • ASP.NET developers turning to Visual WebGui for rich management system

  When The Center for Organ Recovery & Education (CORE) decided they needed a web application to allow easy access to the expenses management system they initially went to ASP.NET web forms combined with CSS. The outcome, however, was not satisfying enough as it appeared bland and lacked in richness. So in order to enrich the UI and give the web application some glitz, Visual WebGui was selected. Visual WebGui provided the needed richness and the familiar Windows look and feel also made the transition for the desktop users very easy. The richer GUI of Visual WebGui compared to ASP.NET conveyed some initial concerns about performance. But the Visual WebGui performance turned out to be a surprising advantage as the website maintained good response times. Working with Visual WebGui required a paradigm shift for the development process as some of the usual methods of coding with ASP.NET did not apply. However, the transition was fairly easy due to the simplicity and intuitiveness of Visual WebGui as well as the good support and documentation. “The shift into a different development paradigm was eased by the Visual WebGui web forums which are very active thanks to a large, involved community. • How can I reinstall XRandR without serious disruption to 12.04?

  This is the sequence that leads to xrandr going missing: Installed 12.04 on a system with a motherboard using the Intel G45 chipset and the E8400 Core 2 Duo and AMD Radeon HD 5450 video card. Installed fglrx when ubuntu prompted via Additional Drivers. Ran Catalyst (Administrative) to select multi-desktop and rebooted. Ran Catalyst (Administrative) to select Xinerama and rebooted. Answer yes to about 3 prompts that request to send bug reports to ubuntu. At this point Settings > Appearances no longer offers the widget that allows you to resize the Unity Launcher icons. Also Settings > Displays says randr extension is not present. BTW: This same sequence is repeatable, including the issues with the missing icon resizer and xrandr, so there is clearly bug fixing potential here. How can I get xrandr reinstalled without un-installing a large set of dependencies? I realize that if I un-install xrandr I will have the chance to re-install but the number of dependencies is large and so an un-install will cause many systems to be un-installed and I am afraid that will ruin Ubuntu 12.04. Hence, I'm looking for a more direct fix. I thought rebooting the .ISO disk and reinstalling would be a good fix but obviously not since this problem is repeatable.

• Ubuntu Desktop Environments, No Internet Access

  Windows has been a pain, so I installed Ubuntu 13.10 on my parent's HP Pavilion first with Cinnamon. For the first few days, it worked wonderfully, and then stopped connecting to the internet. I tried using the windows partition and it worked fine. Posted a question about this - no answer yet. Since then, something happened while my parents were using it. The Windows partition was completely erased. I reinstalled Ubuntu and the Cinnamon desktop. Worked great for a day, then same connectivity issue. Since Ubuntu works fine on my netbook without Cinnamon, I thought perhaps this was a Cinnamon issue. Removed Cinnamon and installed LXDE. LXDE, much like Cinnamon, worked well. Then I rebooted and couldn't connect to the internet. I encountered the same issue when using KDE. I would personally like something with a bottom panel as my parents are familiar and comfortable with Windows and can barely use their cell - phones so I do not think Unity will work too well for them. Ubuntu with Unity seems to be the only way to access the internet. My parents mostly use the internet to check email/facebook/watch video. Anyone know how to fix this?

• Dealing with "jumping" sprites: badly centered?

  Thing is, I've used darkFunction Editor as a way to get all the spriteCoordinates off a spriteSheet for each individual sprite, and parse the .xml it generates inside my game. It all works fine, except when the sprites are all similarly sized, but when a sprite changes from a small sprite into a big one, such as here: When from walking from some direction, to attacking, it starts "jumping", appearing glitchy, because it's not staying in the same correct position, only doing so for the right attacking sprite, due to the drawing being made from the lower left part of the rectangle. I think someone experienced will immediately recognize the problem I mean, if not, when I return home soon, I will shoot a little youtube video demonstrating the issue! So the question is: what possible solutions are there? I've thought that some sort of individual frame "offset" system might be the answer, or perhaps splitting, in this case, the sprite in 2: the sword, and the character itself, and draw sword according to character's facing, but that might be overly complex. Another speculation would be that there might be some sort of method in LibGdx, the library I'm using, that allows me to change the drawing center (which I looked for and didn't find), so I could choose from where the drawing starts.

  In one of the project, I need to display workflow related tasks in the item display page where the workflow is currently running on. To achieve this, I’d like to add the tasks list view web part and using the connected web part to achieve this.(ID=workflowitemid) However, to make it work I need to unhide the workflowitemid field in the task list, as it is hidden field and also cantogglehidden field is set to false. I need to use reflection to change the cantogglehidden field to true as it only has getter in the API and then I am able to unhide the field. You can download the script here. However, it is not ideal (make your environment not supported by Microsoft) to display tasks this way. Another way to display the related task is to use SharePoint designer solution with List view web part and data source. Here are the steps. 1. Create a new list display form as below 2. Edit the custom display form in advanced mode. 3. Find the PlaceHolderMain contentplace hoder and insert the DataView by choosing the associated workflow tasks list as below 4. Go to the List View Tools >> OPTIONS 5. Create a Parameter called workflowitemId Parameter which retrieve the value from the ID querystring as below 6. Create a filter based on UIVersion = workflowitemId as below ,we are going to change the UIVersion to WorkflowItemId property later as WorkflowItemId is a hidden field and cannot be selected from the wizard. 7. Replace UIVersion with WorkflowItemId in the caml for the XsltListViewWebPart. From: TO 8. • 'Content' is NOT 'Text' in XAML

  One of the key concepts in XAML is that the Content property of a XAML control like a Button or ComboBoxItem does not have to contain just textual data. In fact, Content can be almost any other XAML that you want. To illustrate here is a simple example of how to spruce up your Button controls in Silverlight. Here is some very simple XAML that consists of two Button controls within a StackPanel on a Silverlight User Control. <StackPanel>  <Button Name="btnHome"          HorizontalAlignment="Left"          Content="Home" />  <Button Name="btnLog"          HorizontalAlignment="Left"          Content="Logs" /></StackPanel> The XAML listed above will produce a Silverlight control within a Browser that looks like Figure 1.   Figure 1: Normal button controls are quite boring. With just a little bit of refactoring to move the button attributes into Styles, we can make the buttons look a little better. I am a big believer in Styles, so I typically create a Resources section within my user control where I can factor out the common attribute settings for a particular set of controls. Here is a Resources section that I added to my Silverlight user control. <UserControl.Resources>  <Style TargetType="Button"         x:Key="NormalButton">    <Setter Property="HorizontalAlignment"            Value="Left" />    <Setter Property="MinWidth"            Value="50" />    <Setter Property="Margin"            Value="10" />  </Style></UserControl.Resources> Now back in the XAML within the Grid control I update the Button controls to use the Style attribute and have each button use the Static Resource called NormalButton. <StackPanel>  <Button Name="btnHome"          Style="{StaticResource NormalButton}"          Content="Home" />  <Button Name="btnLog"          Style="{StaticResource NormalButton}"          Content="Logs" /></StackPanel> With the additional attributes set in the Resources section on the Button, the above XAML will now display the two buttons as shown in Figure 2. Figure 2: Use Resources to Make Buttons More Consistent Now let’s re-design these buttons even more. Instead of using words for each button, let’s replace the Content property to use a picture. As they say… a picture is worth a thousand words, so let’s take advantage of that. Modify each of the Button controls and eliminate the Content attribute and instead, insert an <Image> control with the <Button> and the </Button> tags. Add a ToolTip to still display the words you had before in the Content and you will now have better looking buttons, as shown in Figure 3.   Figure 3: Using pictures instead of words can be an effective method of communication The XAML to produce Figure 3 is shown in the following listing: <StackPanel>  <Button Name="btnHome"          ToolTipService.ToolTip="Home"          Style="{StaticResource NormalButton}">    <Image Style="{StaticResource NormalImage}"            Source="Images/Home.jpg" />  </Button>  <Button Name="btnLog"          ToolTipService.ToolTip="Logs"          Style="{StaticResource NormalButton}">    <Image Style="{StaticResource NormalImage}"            Source="Images/Log.jpg" />  </Button></StackPanel> You will also need to add the following XAML to the User Control’s Resources section. <Style TargetType="Image"        x:Key="NormalImage">  <Setter Property="Width"          Value="50" /></Style> Add Multiple Controls to Content Now, since the Content can be whatever we want, you could also modify the Content of each button to be a StackPanel control. Then you can have an image and text within the button. <StackPanel>  <Button Name="btnHome"          ToolTipService.ToolTip="Home"          Style="{StaticResource NormalButton}">    <StackPanel>      <Image Style="{StaticResource NormalImage}"              Source="Images/Home.jpg" />      <TextBlock Text="Home"                  Style="{StaticResource NormalTextBlock}" />    </StackPanel>  </Button>  <Button Name="btnLog"          ToolTipService.ToolTip="Logs"          Style="{StaticResource NormalButton}">    <StackPanel>      <Image Style="{StaticResource NormalImage}"              Source="Images/Log.jpg" />      <TextBlock Text="Logs"                  Style="{StaticResource NormalTextBlock}" />    </StackPanel>  </Button></StackPanel> You will need to add one more resource for the TextBlock control too. <Style TargetType="TextBlock"        x:Key="NormalTextBlock">  <Setter Property="HorizontalAlignment"          Value="Center" /></Style> All of the above will now produce the following:   Figure 4: Add multiple controls to the content to make your buttons even more interesting. Summary While this is a simple example, you can see how XAML Content has great flexibility. You could add a MediaElement control as the content of a Button and play a video within the Button. Not that you would necessarily do this, but it does work. What is nice about adding different content within the Button control is you still get the Click event and other attributes of a button, but it does necessarily look like a normal button.   I've got an HTPC that I built myself, with a Asus P5G41T-M Motherboard. It's got an on-board HDMI port, and I've been using that with no problems. I started out with Mythbuntu ( an older version ), and recently updated to 12.04.1 LTS without any issues. I've been thinking about trying out XBMC for a while, and I decided to give it a go. Unfortunately, I seem to be running into quite a few issues. I got XBMC installed from the repos without any issues, but when I try to run it from a console, a box pops up with the following: XBMC needs hardware accelerated OpenGL rendering. Install an appropriate graphics driver. Please consule XBMC Wiki for supported hardware http://wiki.xbmc.org/?title=Supported_hardware In the console, it prints out the following: X Error of failed request: BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation) Major opcode of failed request: 136 (GLX) Minor opcode of failed request: 19 (X_GLXQueryServerString) Serial number of failed request: 12 Current serial number in output stream: 12 When I run vainfo, I get this: libva: VA-API version 0.32.0 libva: va_getDriverName() returns 0 libva: Trying to open /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/i965_drv_video.so libva: va_openDriver() returns 0 vainfo: VA-API version: 0.32 (libva 1.0.15) vainfo: Driver version: Intel i965 driver - 1.0.15 vainfo: Supported profile and entrypoints VAProfileMPEG2Simple : VAEntrypointVLD VAProfileMPEG2Main : VAEntrypointVLD The file /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/i964_drv_video.so exists: # ls -l /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/i965_drv_video.so -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 628728 Mar 29 2012 /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/i965_drv_video.so And in /var/log/Xorg.0.log the following error pops up: GLX error: Can not get required symbols. I'm not really sure where to go from here. I've tried searching all over for how to fix this problem. I've done "apt-get --reinstall xserver-xorg" ( as well as a few other video driver packages ) a few times, and no change. Any help in getting this issue sorted out would be awesome.

Join us as we show you how to remove the Search Helper extension from your browser. An Unexpected Addition to Your Extensions You may be wondering what the new mysterious extension that showed up is for. Its’ purpose is to help the Bing Toolbar better integrate with your browser. Unless you have the Bing Toolbar installed you really do not need this cluttering your browser up. So how do you get rid of it? Removing the Extension In order to remove the extension you will need to navigate to the following location: C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Search Enhancement Pack\Search Helper Once there delete the “firefoxextension folder”…that is all there is to it. If you want to remove the search helper add-on for Internet Explorer then delete the “SEPsearchhelperie.dll file” while you are here. Note: You may need to have administrator rights in order to delete the folder. No more Search Helper Extension! If you are unhappy about this update being snuck into your system, following these instructions will remove it.
