  • SQLPASS DB Design Precon Preview

    - by drsql
It is just a few months left before SQLPASS and I am pushing to get my precon prepped for you. While it will be the second time I produce this on the year, I listened to the feedback and positive comments I have heard from potential attendees, so I am making a couple of big changes to fit what people really liked. Lots more design time. We will do more designs in some form, as a group, teams, and individually, depending on the room and people in attendance. (Figure on a lot of databases centered...(read more)

  • How can I create a facebook style message system in Rails 3?

    - by Angela
I am trying to create a basic message system that allows users to send messages to each other and display it in a simple "Inbox" that shows both messages received and sent, as well as the status of read or unread. Ideally I could reuse existing code. But if not, can someone provide a framework to help me do it? I started to use a single Message record that has UserMessage - one for the sender, one for the receiver. That way I could have separate status. But I'm not sure I'm quite doing it right and would like some guidance. Thanks.

  • Connectify Dispatch Links Multiple Network Nodes Into a Mega Connection

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
Connectify Dispatch wants to change the way you interact with the networks around you by making it dead simple to mesh all available Wi-Fi, Cellular, and Ethernet connections into a massive and stable pipeline. Dispatch makes it open-and-click easy to hook up multiple Wi-Fi nodes, your cellphone, and even Ethernet connections into a single blended connection. While the video above gives a great overview of the process, check out the video below to see it in real world action: The project is currently in the last phase of KickStarter funding, so now is a great time to score Connectify Dispatch at a steep discount–pledging as little as $10 to fund the project, for example, scores you 50% of a 6-month Pro license. Hit up the link below to read more about the project, check the KickStarter status, and see all the neat features in the development pipeline. Dispatch: The Internet, Faster. • Need instructions how to create wpa_supplicant.conf and add fast_reauth=0 to it // WPA 2 Enterprise & frequent wlan disconnects

    - by nutty about natty
Like many other natty users on a university / academic network, I'm experiencing annoying frequent disconnects / hangs / delays. See, for instance: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/wpasupplicant/+bug/429370 I would like to learn how to add fast_reauth=0 to the wpa_supplicant.conf file. This file, it seems, does not exit by default, and needs to be manually created first: http://w1.fi/gitweb/gitweb.cgi?p=hostap.git;a=blob_plain;f=wpa_supplicant/README [quote] You will need to make a configuration file, e.g., /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf, with network configuration for the networks you are going to use. [unquote] Further, I installed wpa_gui which probably needs to be launched with parameters, else it's pretty blank... What I'm hoping for is this: That creating a wpa_supplicant.conf file with fast_reauth=0 in it, saving it to the relevant path, will work and make my uni wireless (more or even completely) stable. I read mixed reviews about wicd (as an alternative to the network manager). Also note that on my basic wlan at home (with bog-standard wpa encryption) the connection is stable. Thanks!

  • Do you think code is self documenting?

    - by Desolate Planet
This is a question that was put to me many years ago as a gradute in a job interview and it's kind of picked at my brain now and again and I've never really found a good answer that satisfies me. The interviewer in question was looking for a black and white answer, there was no middle ground. I never got the chance to ask about the rationale behind the question, but I'm curious why that question would be put to a developer and what you would learn from a yes or no answer? From my own point of view, I can read Java, Python, Delphi etc, but if my manager comes up to me and asks me how far along in a project I am and I say "The code is 80% complete" (and before you start shooting me down, I've heard this uttered in a couple of offices by developers), how exactly is that self documenting? Apologies if this question seems strange, but I'd rather ask and get some opinions on it to gain a better understanding of why it would be put to someone in an interview.

  • T-SQL Tuesday : Reflections on the PASS Summit and our community

    - by AaronBertrand
Last week I attended the PASS Summit in Seattle. I blogged from both keynotes ( Keynote #1 and Keynote #2 ), as well as the WIT Luncheon - which SQL Sentry sponsored. I had a fantastic time at the conference, even though these days I attend far fewer sessions that I used to. As a company, we were overwhelmed by the positive energy in the Expo Hall. I really liked the notebook idea, where board members were assigned notebooks to carry around and take ideas from attendees. I took full advantage when...(read more)

  • Attaining credit card data

    - by Adam
I've read the many posts on this site that say we are not allowed to store cc numbers if we are not pci-compliant. But, I'm wondering if it is possible to send a CC number through a form to an email address? Would that be still infringing on the standards? The reason I ask is that a local business owner wants to retrieve a number through a form on his website, so he can manually enter the cc info on his end. I'm assuming the only way to properly get a credit card number is to setup a merchant account? What's the best way to get a cc number without calling the actual customer? I'm thinking email is a bad idea as well.

  • How do I grok NHibernate's QueryOver API?

    - by Brant Bobby
I've run into the limits of what NHibernate 3.0's LINQ provider is capable of and decided it's time to learn about one of the more powerful (or at least feature-complete) options: the QueryOver API. The problem is, I have zero experience with ICriteria, and all of the tutorials I've been able to find online either: Assume I'm an ICriteria expert and simply show me how to convert ICriteria code to the new fluent interface, or Are trivial "here's how you do an inner join" examples that don't really help me understand more complex concepts like projections, subqueries, requirements, or whatever other magic the API is capable of. What should I read to really learn about QueryOver, and how to make full use of it?

  • Windows 8.1 Apps Now in Bookstores

    - by Stephen.Walther
My book Windows 8.1 Apps with HTML5 and JavaScript is in bookstores now and it is available for purchase from Amazon. Extensively updated for the release of Windows 8.1, this book covers all of the new features of the WinJS 2.0 library such as the Repeater, SearchBox, WebView, and NavBar controls and the new WinJS Scheduler. I wrote a new sample app for this edition of the book  – the MyTasks app — that demonstrates how to build a Windows Store app that interacts with Windows Azure Mobile Services. If you are currently using a Windows 8.1 computer then you can install the MyTasks sample app from the Windows Store. I’ve written a summary of the new features included in Windows 8.1 for app developers which you can read here: Top 10 Changes for Building Windows Store Apps with Windows 8.1

  • Routing in ASP.Net 4.0 Web Forms

    - by nikolaosk
In this blog post I would like to talk about a new ASP.Net 4.0 feature, URL Routing . I know this issue has been explained from various people on the web but I will give my own example. We could implement routing since ASP.Net 3.5 SP1 but it was there primarily to support ASP.Net MVC . Even in that release you could implement rounting in web forms but it was a quite difficult thing to do. However in ASP.Net 4.0 there is an integrated support for routing. It becomes easy to map requests in your site...(read more)

  • Value Not Updating? Check for Caching!

    - by Ken Cox [MVP]
Here’s today’s dumb mistake: A value that was supposedly updated by a routine on one page, wasn’t changing on another ASP.NET screen. I carefully traced the progress of the update and everything looked right – all the way to the database. After puzzling over why the value wouldn’t show correctly on the ASP.NET grid, it finally dawned on me: <%@ OutputCache Duration="30" VaryByParam="none" %> Ouch! To improve efficiency, I had told the page to cache the output for 30 seconds...(read more)

  • Manual bootstrapping with Juju on VPS

    - by aaronfc
I recently bought a VPS (OpenVZ) with Ubuntu 13.04. Lately I've read about Juju and I thought it would match my needs on my brand new VPS as I want to easily configure Hadoop, Wordpress, Graphite and other services. I tried the juju-local approach but I got an error while installing it: http://paste.ubuntu.com/6373143/ So I got to #juju IRC channel and I was told to use "Manual bootstrapping" and create a question here in order to get more info as it seems is something under development. Could anybody help me getting Juju to work on my VPS? Did any had the same problem? Thanks in advance! EDIT: After some more research (and after reading my own question) I think I should clarify a little more the situation. What I want is a manual provider to allow me manage my VPS from Juju. I know there might be a work in progress and I would appreciate any info regarding it's state and any possible solution :)

  • How forgiving do you need to be on new employees?

    - by Arcturus
Recently we have a new developer in our team. We are getting him up to speed and he is picking it all up quite fast, but a new developer means new (foreign) coding styles and ways to solve things. It feels kinda petty to start whining about coding styles at the first three classes he codes, but how forgiving are you guys when dealing with new developers? Do you let them muddle on, and point it out later? Or do you wield the scepter of intolerance immediately? When do you draw the line, or if not, why not? P.S. New guy, if you read this: you are doing great, keep up the good work ;) Edit: I've accepted the most up-voted answer, as most answers share the same message: Be nice, but tell them asap! Thanks all for the nice answers! Really appreciated it!

  • Has programming ruined your perception of round numbers?

    - by Jon Purdy
Most of the world works in base 10 nowadays, but as programmers working on binary systems, we constantly find ourselves working with powers of 2. While most people consider integer multiples of powers of 10 "nice and round" and somehow aesthetically superior, I found early on in my programming adventures that multiples of powers of 2 feel much more intuitively round to me: fewer factors, of course. I'm much more likely to lay out a Web site using, say, 8- or 16-pixel margins rather than 10 or 20, and when someone remarks that 128 is an insanely arbitrary number of ounces to be in a gallon, I have to smile a little inside at how, just perhaps, the U.S. system might be superior to metric in one small way. I'm just curious: has programming ruined (read: altered) your perception of the roundness of a number?

  • I removed nvidia driver and lshw -c video still shows nvidia

    - by sinekonata
Today I tried to activate the newer experimental drivers and both 304 and 310 failed to even install. So I tried the regular nvidia driver 295.40 for the 20th time today (I had lag issues and was testing Nouveau vs Nvidia with dual monitor and Unity2D-3D) Within my tty1 I tried to remove nvidia: sudo apt-get remove nvidia-settings nvidia-current and purge too reboot, nothing. So when lshw -c video displayed nvidia as my driver I tried sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf since I read ubuntu would "reset" the GUI conf but reboot, nothing. So next I tried sudo jockey-text --disable=xorg:nvidia_current And nothing has worked...

  • Sharing banners on 3rd party websites, concerned about limited resources on on server side

    - by Omne
I've made a banner for my website and I'm planning to ask my followers to share it on their website to help improve my rank. my website is hosted on GAE, the banners are less than 5kb/each and I must say that I don't want to pay for extra bandwidth I've read the Google App Engine Quotas but honestly I don't understand anything of it. Would you please tell me which table/data in this page should be of my concern? Also, do you think it's wise to host such banners, that are going to end up on 3rd party websites, on the GAE? or am I more secure if I use free online services like Google Picasa?

  • How Can I Safely Destroy Sensitive Data CDs/DVDs?

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
You have a pile of DVDs with sensitive information on them and you need to safely and effectively dispose of them so no data recovery is possible. What’s the most safe and efficient way to get the job done? Today’s Question & Answer session comes to us courtesy of SuperUser—a subdivision of Stack Exchange, a community-driven grouping of Q&A web sites. The Question SuperUser reader HaLaBi wants to know how he can safely destroy CDs and DVDs with personal data on them: I have old CDs/DVDs which have some backups, these backups have some work and personal files. I always had problems when I needed to physically destroy them to make sure no one will reuse them. Breaking them is dangerous, pieces could fly fast and may cause harm. Scratching them badly is what I always do but it takes long time and I managed to read some of the data in the scratched CDs/DVDs. What’s the way to physically destroy a CD/DVD safely? How should he approach the problem? The Answer SuperUser contributor Journeyman Geek offers a practical solution coupled with a slightly mad-scientist solution: The proper way is to get yourself a shredder that also handles cds – look online for cd shredders. This is the right option if you end up doing this routinely. I don’t do this very often – For small scale destruction I favour a pair of tin snips – they have enough force to cut through a cd, yet are blunt enough to cause small cracks along the sheer line. Kitchen shears with one serrated side work well too. You want to damage the data layer along with shearing along the plastic, and these work magnificently. Do it in a bag, cause this generates sparkly bits. There’s also the fun, and probably dangerous way – find yourself an old microwave, and microwave them. I would suggest doing this in a well ventilated area of course, and not using your mother’s good microwave. There’s a lot of videos of this on YouTube – such as this (who’s done this in a kitchen… and using his mom’s microwave). This results in a very much destroyed cd in every respect. If I was an evil hacker mastermind, this is what I’d do. The other options are better for the rest of us. Another contributor, Keltari, notes that the only safe (and DoD approved) way to dispose of data is total destruction: The answer by Journeyman Geek is good enough for almost everything. But oddly, that common phrase “Good enough for government work” does not apply – depending on which part of the government. It is technically possible to recover data from shredded/broken/etc CDs and DVDs. If you have a microscope handy, put the disc in it and you can see the pits. The disc can be reassembled and the data can be reconstructed — minus the data that was physically destroyed. So why not just pulverize the disc into dust? Or burn it to a crisp? While technically, that would completely eliminate the data, it leaves no record of the disc having existed. And in some places, like DoD and other secure facilities, the data needs to be destroyed, but the disc needs to exist. If there is a security audit, the disc can be pulled to show it has been destroyed. So how can a disc exist, yet be destroyed? Well, the most common method is grinding the disc down to destroy the data, yet keep the label surface of the disc intact. Basically, it’s no different than using sandpaper on the writable side, till the data is gone. Have something to add to the explanation? Sound off in the the comments. • compiz hiding unity and all menus

    - by Lennart Guldbrandsson
After updating to Ubuntu 11.10, I was severly disturbed by Dash and wanted to go back to Ubuntu Classic. So I tried to read up, and found Compiz SettingsManager. In there, I clicked "on" never hide menus. For some reason this made all my menus at the top of the screen (volume, network, my login identity, and shutoff, etc) disappear - as well as the quickstart menu to the left (Unity). I am not very technical, so I have a hard time finding any programs now, and I just got on the internet by clicking on a link in a document, that I was fortunate to have on my Desktop. Without it, I wouldn't be able to ask for help. What I wish for is a) to get back the menu at the top, b) to restore the Ubuntu Classic without the irritating launcher and Dash, c) these two things to not disappear every time there is a new version of Ubuntu. Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • How do I mount shared folders (win7 host) in Ubuntu (guest) using VMware(tools v6)

    - by V-Light
Hello, Experts. I've successfully installed VMware tools for Ubuntu. Everything seems to work fine, but shared folders were not mounted automatically. How do I get them to work? If I run vmware-hgfsclient in terminal, I get the list of shared folders, but ls -l /mnt/hgfs is empty. Actually there's no hgfs dir in /mnt. I know I should probably use the vmware-hgfsclient tool, but I realy don't know how. P.S. I wouldn't ask if I could understand the vmware-hgfsclient help I've read. Any suggestions?
