  The documentation has an example on how to retrieve simple values only, rather than managed objects. This remembers a lot SQL using aliases and functions to only retrieve calculated values. So, actually pretty geeky stuff. • How do I read Unicode characters from an MS Access 2007 database through Java?

  In Java, I have written a program that reads a UTF8 text file. The text file contains a SQL query of the SELECT kind. The program then executes the query on the Microsoft Access 2007 database and writes all fields of the first row to a UTF8 text file. The problem I have is when a row is returned that contains unicode characters, such as "?". These characters show up as "?" in the text file. I know that the text files are read and written correctly, because a dummy UTF8 character ("?") is read from the text file containing the SQL query and written to the text file containing the resulting row. The UTF8 character looks correct when the written text file is opened in Notepad, so the reading and writing of the text files are not part of the problem. I also accept workaround suggestions. =) What I want to be able to do is to make a Unicode query (for example one that searches for posts that contain the "?" character) and to have results with Unicode characters receieved and saved correctly. The type library file, does not have any hints of events definitions, so Delphi doesn't see it. The class works fine for other C# applications, as you would expect. • Change a UIButton View's background upon press

  This should be easy but its got me stumped. I've got a button on each row of a table cell. The button is to delete the file associated with that row. I have an image that indicates if the file is present on the iPhone or not present. When the user presses the button, the target action method (showDeleteSheet) then calls a UIActionSheet with a variable to give it the indexPath of the row pressed. Then the user presses delete on the action sheet and the action sheet's clickedButtonAtIndex method deletes the file. Now, I need to update the button's background image property to change the image in the appropriate table cell to the not downloaded image. This can be done in either the button's target action method or the action sheet's clickedButtonAtIndex method. If so I don't know how to tell it which. Because I test if the file is downloaded when the button is made and the background image is set, when I scroll down so the cell in question is de-queued then scroll back up it show's the correct image. I've tried to force the table to reload but [table reloadData]; is doing nothing. I've tried reloadRowsAtIndexPaths and still no good. Any one care to educate me on how this is done?

However when I retrieve the persisted object to check if its name is still 100 characters long, the test fails. The way I see it, the retrieved object should have a name that is 100 characters long, given that the attempted update failed. The last assertion fails because the name is 110 characters long now, as if the ea instance was indeed updated. What am I doing wrong here?

• What is the best way to archive data in a relational database?

  I have a bit of an issue with a particular aspect of a program I'm working on. I need the ability to archive (fix) a table so that a change anywhere in the system will not affect the results it returns. This is the basic structure of what I need to fix: Recipe --> Recipe (as sub recipe) Recipe --> Ingredients So, if I fix a Recipe, I need to ensure all the sub recipes (including all the sub recipes sub recipes and so forth) are fixed and all its ingredients are fixed. The problem is that the sub recipe and ingredients still need to be modifiable as they are used by other recipes that are not fixed. I came up with a solution whereby I serialize (with protobuf-net) a master object that deals with the recipe and all the sub recipes and ingredients and save the archive data to a table like follows: Archive{ ReferenceId, (i.e. RecipeId) ReferenceTypeId, (i.e. Recipe) ArchiveData varbinary(max) } Now, this works great and is almost perfect... however I totally forgot (I'd love to blame the agile development mentally, however this was just short sighted) that this information needs to be reported on. As far as I'm aware I can't think how I could inflate the serialized data back into my Recipe Object and use it in a Report. I'm using the standard SQL 2005 report services at the moment. Alternatively, I guess I could do the following: Duplicate every table and tag the word "Archive" on the end of the table name. This would then give me an area of specific archive data... but ignoring my simplified example, there'd actually be about 15 tables duplicated. Add a nullable, non-foreign key property called "CopiedFromId" to every table that contains fixed data and duplicate every record that the recipe (and all it's sub recipes and all their sub recipes) touches. Create some sort of denormalised structure that could be restored from at a later date to the original, unfixed recipe. Although I think this would be like option 1 and involve a lot of extra tables. Your challenge For my first Silverlight application I thought it would be fun to use the World of Warcraft armoury to list the characters in my guild. This involves making an asyncronous from Silverlight (duh!) to the WoW armoury which is XML based. SIMPLE EH? Take a look at this link and open the source. I have not managed to get the expected returned XML at all. Notes: If the browser is capable of transforming the XML it will do so, otherwise HTML will be provided. I think it examines the UserAgent I am a seasoned asp.net web developer C# so go easy if you start talking about native to Windows Forms / WPF I can't seem to set the UserAgent setting in .net 4.0 - doesn't seem to be a property off the HttpWebRequest object for some reason - i think it used to be available. Silverlight 4.0 (created as 3.0 originally before I updated my installation of Silverlight to 4.0) Created using C# 4.0 Please explain as if you talking to a web developer and not a proper programming lol! This can't be the right way? It seems totally wrong to me as for each extra field I add, I have to add the property into the Index() method? I had a look at this answer where the form is passed through TempData. This is obviously an improvement, but it's not strongly typed? Is there a way to do something similar but have it strongly typed? This may be a simple-enough question, but the curse of 10 years of WinForms/WebForms makes this MVC malarky hard to get your head 'round.

  My table structure is as follows: Person 1-M PesonAddress Person 1-M PesonPhone Person 1-M PesonEmail Person 1-M Contract Contract M-M Program Contract M-1 Organization At the end of this query I need a populated object graph where each person has their: PesonAddress's PesonPhone's PesonEmail's PesonPhone's Contract's - and this has its respective Program's Now I had the following query and I thought that it was working great, but it has a couple of problems: from people in ctx.People.Include("PersonAddress") .Include("PersonLandline") .Include("PersonMobile") .Include("PersonEmail") .Include("Contract") .Include("Contract.Program") where people.Contract.Any( contract => (param.OrganizationId == contract.OrganizationId) && contract.Program.Any( contractProgram => (param.ProgramId == contractProgram.ProgramId))) select people; The problem is that it filters the person to the criteria but not the Contracts or the Contract's Programs. It brings back all Contracts that each person has not just the ones that have an OrganizationId of x and the same goes for each of those Contract's Programs respectively. What I want is only the people that have at least one contract with an OrgId of x with and where that contract has a Program with the Id of y... and for the object graph that is returned to have only the contracts that match and programs within that contract that match. I kinda understand why its not working, but I don't know how to change it so it is working... Keeping in mind that I am trying to do this as a compiled query so I think that means anonymous types are out.

  I'm having a little trouble with my MySQL- Connection- Pooling. This is the case: Different jobs are scheduled via Quartz. All jobs connect to different databases which works fine the whole day while the nightly scheduled jobs fail with a CommunicationsException... Quartz-Jobs: Job1 runs 0 0 6,10,14,18 * * ? Job2 runs 0 30 10,18 * * ? Job3 runs 0 0 5 * * ? As you can see the last job runs at 18 taking about 1 hour to run. The first job at 5am is the one that fails. You should consider either expiring and/or testing connection validity before use in your application, increasing the server configured values for client timeouts, or using the Connector/J connection property 'autoReconnect=true' to avoid this problem. • How to convert a 32bpp image to an indexed format?

  So here are the details (I am using C# BTW): I receive a 32bpp image (JPEG compressed) from a server. At some point, I would like to use the Palette property of a bitmap to color over-saturated pixels (brightness 240) red. To do so, I need to get the image into an indexed format. I have tried converting the image to a GIF, but I get quality loss. I have tried creating a new bitmap in an index format by these methods: // causes a "Parameter not valid" error Bitmap indexed = new Bitmap(orig.Width, orig.Height, PixelFormat.Indexed) // no error, but the resulting image is black due to information loss I assume Bitmap indexed = new Bitmap(orig.Width, orig.Height, PixelFormat.Format8bppIndexed) I am at a loss now. The data in this image is changed constantly by the user, so I don't want to manually set pixels that have a brightness 240 if I can avoid it. If I can set the palette once when the image is created, my work is done. If I am going about this the wrong way to begin with please let me know. I write the interface to the actual scanner. We use a line-scan camera. To test the line rate of the camera, the user scans a very small portion and looks at the image. The image is displayed next to a track bar. When the user moves the track bar (adjusting line rate), I change the overall intensity of the image in an attempt to model what it would look like at the new line rate. I do this using an ImageAttributes and ColorMatrix object currently. When the user adjusts the track bar, I adjust the matrix. This does not give me per pixel information, but the performance is very nice. I could use LockBits and some unsafe code here, but I would rather not rewrite it if possible. When the new image is created, I would like for all pixels with a brightness value of 240 to be colored red. I was thinking that defining a palette for the bitmap up front would be a clean way of doing this.

• Complex Entity Framework linked-graphs issue: how to limit change set / break the graph?

  I have an EDMX containing Sentences, and Words, say and a Sentence contains three Words, say. Appropriate FK relationships exist between the tables. I create some words: Word word1 = new Word(); Word word2 = ... I build a Sentence: Sentence x = new Sentence (word1, word2, word3); I build another Sentence: Sentence y = new Sentence (word1, word4, word5); I try to save x to the database, but EF builds a change set that includes everything, including y, word4 and word5 that aren't ready to save to the database. When SaveChanges() happens it throws an exception: Unable to determine the principal end of the ... relationship. Multiple added entities may have the same primary key. I think it does this because Word has an EntityCollection<Sentence> on it from the FK relationship between the two tables, and thus Sentence y is inextricably linked to Sentence x through word1. So I remove the Navigation Property Sentences from Word and try again. It still tries to put the entire graph into the change set. What suggestions do the Entity Framework experts have for ways to break this connection. Essentially what I want is a one-way mapping from Sentence to Word; I don't want an EntityCollection<Sentence> on Word and I don't want the object graph to get intertwined like this.   I'm writing a DLL that has function for getting Alfresco login ticket without using user password, using only a user principal name (UPN). I’m calling alfresco REST API service /wcservice. I use NTLM in Alfresco. I’m impersonating users using WindowsIdentity constructor as explained here http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms998351.aspx#paght000023_impersonatingbyusingwindowsidentity. I checked and user is properly impersonated (I checked WindowsIdentity.GetCurrent().Name property). After impersonating a user, I try to make HttpWebRequest and set its credentials with CredentialsCache.DefaultNetworkCredentials. I get the error: The remote server returned an error: (401) Unauthorized. at System.Net.HttpWebRequest.GetResponse() When I use new NetworkCredential("username", "P@ssw0rd") to set request credentials, I get Alfresco login ticket (HttpStatusCode.OK, 200). Is there any way that I can get Alfresco login ticket without user password? • How best to store Subversion version information in EAR's?

  When receiving a bug report or an it-doesnt-work message one of my initials questions is always what version? With a different builds being at many stages of testing, planning and deploying this is often a non-trivial question. I the case of releasing Java JAR (ear, jar, rar, war) files I would like to be able to look in/at the JAR and switch to the same branch, version or tag that was the source of the released JAR. How can I best adjust the ant build process so that the version information in the svn checkout remains in the created build? I was thinking along the lines of: adding a VERSION file, but with what content? storing information in the META-INF file, but under what property with which content? copying sources into the result archive added svn:properties to all sources with keywords in places the compiler leaves them be I ended up using the svnversion approach (the accepted anwser), because it scans the entire subtree as opposed to svn info which just looks at the current file / directory. • Shift+Tab not working in TreeView control

  I cannot get backwards navigation using Shift+Tab to work in a TreeView that contains TextBoxs, forward navigation using Tab works fine and jump from TextBox to TextBox inside the TreeView. Anytime Shift+Tab is used when one of the TextBoxes inside the TreeView, then the focus is move to the previous control outside the TreeView, instead of the previous control inside the TreeView. Also its only Shift+Tab navigation that are not working correctly, Ctrl+Shift+Tab work as expected and in the correct order. Any suggestions to what I'm doing wrong? • Menu Control in Master Page fails to use CSS styles

  I'm working on a web application that uses ASP.NET 3.5 and C#. Structurally, I have a master page with a menu control on it. The control serves as my navigation, and it gets its items from a SiteMapDataSource control and a corresponding Web.sitemap file. The problem is that some styles do not render properly when you specify the CssClass property. More specifically, the selected and hover styles don't respond to css styles. I'm aware I might be able to programmically determine the current page and select the corresponding menu item manually so it receives the proper style class, but before I resort to hacking C# and Javascript together to fix this functionality, I'm open to ideas.

• Application crashing on getting updated information from database using timer and storing it on loca

  In our multi - user application we are continuously interacting with database. We have a common class through which we are sending POST queries to database and obtaining xml files in return. We are using delegates of NSXMLParser to parse the obtained file. The problem with us is we are facing many crashes in it generally when application is idle and changed data in database is being fetched in background through timer which is invoked after every few seconds. We have also dealt with error handling through try and catch but it proves to be of no use in this case and mostly application crashes with following error : Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGBUS) Exception Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE at 0x0000000000000020 Strange thing is that many times the fetching of updated data at background works very fine, same methods being successfully executed under similar conditions but suddenly it crashes on one of them.
