• How can I set Windows Server 2008 juntion points to Every Read Allow?

  We have apps running on Windows Server 2003 and now 2008 as well. Unfortunately some of our code relies on inspecting the Documents and Settings directory which no longer exists in Windows 2003. It looks like there are "Junction Points" set up for backwards compatibility - http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb756982.aspx. But it seems like nothing I can do can get me access. I basically need to be able to call from a command line on both 2003 and 2008: C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe Which translates in Windows 2008 to : C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe I've tried setting up my own "Documents and Settings" folder in 2008 but it won't let me as that seems to be reserved for these Juntion Points.

• Are copyright notices really required?

  Ever since I made my first web page 13 years ago I have followed the pattern of showing a copyright notice in the footer of each page. Over the years the format of this notice has changed in the following way; Copyright © <NAME> yyyy. All rights are reserved. Copyright © <NAME> yyyy © yyyy <NAME> © <NAME> This has generally mirrored the format used by Google. However, I recently noticed that they no longer display a copyright notice on their home page nor have one in their source code/meta tags. I see they still display it on most (if not all) other pages. I understand that Google are very keen to keep the word count down on their homepage, which could be the reason for this sacrafice, but my question is more general and relates to all websites. Since I've always just done it out of habit, I'm hoping someone can explain if/when I a copyright notice is actually required to protect your content and rights. Also, when it is required, is there a format in which the notice must adhere to in order to be valid?

• Should GeeksWithBlogs move to the Wordpress Platform?

  Geekswithblogs was my first ever blog and my first post was on 22nd June 2006. Since then very little functionality has been added. This is not a complaint, but rather an observation that it is very hard to keep up with all of the blogging capabilities that people want. My point would be: “Why bother!” Vote now for a migration of the awesome Geekswithblogs content from SubText to Wordpress. Having been a long time user of GWB I have been worried of late by my envy of other blogging platforms. I made a number of requests around 10 months ago for things that almost all blogging platforms provide, but which are not available on GWB. Support other comment frameworks – The current comment system is so antiquated that it does not even have the common filters like Facebook, twitter or Google login to help prevent spam. Tags are not listed in the RSS – This can prevent you from getting the Google juice that you deserve 301 redirects to a single URL– If you use a custom URL then all your posts are split between both the GWB URL and the custom one. This is VERY bas for SEO. I realise that it is difficult to find time to add all of the features that all the uber geeks on this site want, so why bother… lets move to the most popular and moded platform available and allow everyone to add whatever widgets they like. • OOW 2012: Kings of Leon & Pearl Jam - Appreciation Event

  June 15, 1992 - that was actually the day when Pearl Jam played their first concert in Serenadenhof in my hometown, Nürnberg. Oups ... that's over 20 years ago ... So I was so happy to get a ticket to this year's OOW 2012 appreciation event on Treasure Island. Every year it amazes me over and over again how the organizers manage it logistically to bring almost 40,000 people to and back from the island. Food was ... I would say fairly ok ... and beer (as always) is not - actually even though I'm not a beer drinker I wouldn't call it beer.  Kings of Leon did start. I like them a lot and owe their 2008 album Only By Night. That was a good start to warm up the crowd. And then Pearl Jam took over - and ... wooooooow ... they are such a great live band. First of all as far as I understood they were donating the money they've got for that gig to an NGO. And Eddie Vedder's voice is simply striking ... I had shivers running down my spine. They played a good excerpt of their +20 years career closing down with Alive at the very end. It seemed to everybody that the band had real fun playing there - and it was sooooo good. Thanks a lot to the person who did organize me a ticket Catching my bus back to my hotel area down at Fisherman's Wharf worked well - but I must have fallen asleep 5 minutes after we've left the parking lot. The next thing I did recognize was the bus driver pushing the breaks at Northpoint. What a wonderful night ...

• Inspiration

  Once again, I find myself back in Seoul – ASEM Tower, 16th Floor in a mobile room. I’m busy preparing for the interview process that is about to take place for Oracle Korea’s GIP 7th (Graduate Intake Program): scheduling the first round interviews, organizing interview guidelines, educating interviewers on the process and framework and  getting all the logistics ready for the 1st round interview. Seoul or Korea rather is a fascinating place. Highly efficient, the utmost respect for seniors and results orientated. When students come in for an interview at first it was hard to tell them apart – there seems to be accepted interview attire that must be worn when attending an interview. Males and Females, all dress in black suits, with white shirts underneath – with males to wear simple and dark colored ties. During the interview, they would all sit very upright, all would bow when entering the room, place their hands on the laps and very often they would hold minimal eye contact. They would project their voice loud to portray confidence, they would talk in the Korean formal dialect at all times and will treat every question, every moment with extreme clarity and the utmost professionalism. When the interview concludes, they will all stand hands by their sides, bow 90 degrees and thank all the interviewers for their precious time and opportunity. As soon as they leave the interview room, I could hear all their sighs of relief and commended each other on their efforts. More and more I learn about the Korean culture it inspires me. Their patriotism, their respect for each, their values, their appreciation, their motivation, their desires and passion – it truly was an experience for me (even as a recruiter) and can’t help but feel truly impressed and motivated to live for every moment. • ASP.NET MVC Cookbook &ndash; public review

  I have recently started writing another book.  The topic of this book is ASP.NET MVC.  This book differs from my previous book in that rather than working towards building one project from end to end – this book will demonstrate specific topics from end to end.  It is a recipe book (hence the cookbook name) and will be part of the Packt Publishing cookbook series.  An example recipe in this book might be how to consume JSON, creating a master /details page, jquery modal popups, custom ActionResults, etc.  Basically anything recipe oriented around the topic of ASP.NET MVC might be acceptable.  If you are interested in helping out with the review process you can join the “ASP.NET MVC 2 Cookbook-review” group on Google here: http://groups.google.com/group/aspnet-mvc-2-cookbook-review Currently the suggested TOC for the project is listed.  Also, chapters 1, 2, and most of 8 are posted.  Chapter 5 should be available tonight or tomorrow. • What is a currently a good game stack for simple Javascript 2D multiplatform game?

  I'm looking for advice from someone can help me avoid common pitfalls in developing light weight, quick-to-market games. Yeah, I've heard of Google ;-), but a trip down Google lane does not beat solid experience from someone who has been down this path. I'm looking for advice from someone who works alone, or in a small team, and has developed some 2D games for mobile. My game ideas don't require intensive graphics, just simple arcade style glyphs and collision detection. My experience is mostly with Scala, Java and web technologies (Javascript, CSS, SVG, HTML, etc). My question is: Is there a nice stack that someone can suggest that will be a good fit for my skillset? I'm considering Javascript for simple 2D shooter games with simple multiplayer games being supported with a Scala server-side written on Spray. Is this silly? Should I rather look into things such as Unity 3D, and use it in 2D mode? For the actual game engine, something like the Sparrow Framework would be great, but it needs to be multiplatform.

• The ping response time doesn't reflect the real network response time

  I encountered a weird problem that the response time returned by ping is almost fixed at 98ms. Either I ping the gateway, or I ping a local host or a internet host. The response time is always around 98ms although the actual delay is obvious. However, the reverse ping (from a local machine to this host) works properly. • Monitor network connectivity in WP7 apps

  Most interesting Windows Phone apps rely on some network service for their functionality. So at some point in your app you may need to know programmatically if there is network connection available or not. For example, the Translator by Moth app relies on the Bing Translation service for translations. When a request for translation (text or voice) is made, the network call may fail. The failure reason is not evident from any of the return results, so I check the connection to see if it is present. Dependent on that, a different message is shown to the user. Before the translation phase is even reached, at the app start up time the Bing service is queried for its list of  languages; in that case I don't want to show the user a message and instead want to be notified when the network is available in order to send the query out again. So for those two requirements (which I imagine are common in other apps) I wrote a simple wrapper MyNetwork static class to the framework APIs: Call once MyNetwork.MonitorNetworkAvailability() method so it monitors the network change At any time check the MyNetwork.IsConnected property to check for network presence Subscribe to its MyNetwork.ConnectionEstablished event Optionally, during debugging use its MyNetwork.ChangeStatus method to simulate a change in network status As usual, there may be better ways to achieve this, but this class works perfectly for my scenarios. • Share on: FB, Tweet, Digg, Linkedin, Delicious, My mother, ... it's just on fashion, or some real value?

  Nowadays your site is not in fashion if you don't show at least a couple of share buttons like these: Is this just fashion, or do people actually get something good out of it? When I say "something good" I mostly mean something that you could measure, and not just the feeling that was good. Maybe I can better explain with an example: did you notice (in some way) that many people clicked on those links to share your page/s on those web 2.0 social sites? And in such a case on which social networks did you see they mostly share your pages? BTW I'm not talking about Google PR, i know all web 2.0 social sites use nofollow everywhere and even hidden links, so they are useless by themselves for PR. UPDATE: According to this video, Google's Alter Ego says that they now use in some way data from social sites in ranking. If this is true, it's obvious that the Share on button for FB, Tweet, etc are definitely of some values. But again my question is more about what you noticed in your real experience to be a direct benefit of adding those type of "Share On" links on your webisite? I.e. did you see more traffic coming in form FB, or some users who bought your products because of FB or Twitter? Or any other benefits? Thanks

• Why does my mail get marked as spam?

  I Have the server "afspraakmanager.be". It matches everything not to be a spam server.(it isn't by the way): it has reverse dns, spf,dkim,... . But hotmail marks it as spam. • Today I talk about you

  Some time back I posted a blog entry (mirrored here and here) asking you how you design databases. Out of those responses, my own experience, studies I read, and interviews I conducted, I collected a wealth of data. Thanks for your responses. So what am I going to do with that information? Well, all along I had planned for that to be used today. I am giving a presentation at an event called “TechReady” called “How Your Customers Design Databases”. This is a Microsoft-internal event, where technical professionals like myself, salespeople, and the product team get together to talk about what has been working, what doesn’t, what is coming and hopefully (fingers crossed here) what the product team can do to help us help the SQL Server community. I’ve mentioned before that I teach database design as part of a course I run at the University of Washington. I’m also planning to give a mini-lecture from that series at TechEd 2010, so if you’re coming stop by. I’d love to meet you. So today I talk about you – thanks for the input. • Rendering composite/SVideo input with GraphEdit (comp./svid. source for crossbar)?

  Does anyone know how to form a GraphEdit graph to render composite/SVideo input (especially for a Hauppauge or AIW card)? Google (and Google Images) finds only results focusing on rendering the TV tuner which is already simple enough. The tv-tuner-in pins connect to the TvTuner/TvAudio source, but nothing seems to be able to connect to the Composite/SVideo pins. I have looked through the filters and could find no sources to connect to the Composite/SVideo input pins of the crossbar; GraphEdit always complains that they are not compatible.

• prevent search engines indexing depending on domain

  We have a dedicated server with a hosting company with a couple of dozens of webs in it. It happens that the nameservers (EG: ns1.domain.com, ns2.domain.com) ip's are coincident with some client webs, let's say webclient1.com and webclient2.com Problem is that for a certain searches in google, some results are showing up like ns1.domain.com/result instead of webclient1.com/result which is pretty wrong and annoying for our clients. Actually if you type in the browser ns1.domain.com or ns2.domain.com it will load some pageclients instead. Is there any way to prevent google to track those results only in case the robots are coming to check ns domains? It may be not correct to ask this as well, but why is it happening? is it a result of a bad server configuration? I'm pretty new on these matters, so thank you in advance for any help!

• What is the best way to restrict access to adult content on Ubuntu?

  I bought my kids a PC and installed 12.04 (Unity) on it. The bottom line is, I want my children to use the computer unsupervised while I have confidence they cannot access anything inappropriate. What I have looked at: I was looking at Scrubit a tool which allows me configure my wifi router to block content and this solution would also protect my other PC and mobile devices. This may be overkill as I just want the solution to work on one PC. I also did some Google searches and came across the application called Nanny (it seems to look the part). My experience of OSS is that the best solutions frequently never appear first on a Google search list and in this case I need to trust the methods therefore my question is very specific. I want to leverage your knowledge and experience to understand “What is the best way to restrict adult content on 12.04 LTS” as this is important to me. It maybe a combination of things so please don't answer this question "try this or that", then give me some PPA unless you can share your experience of how good it is and of course if there are any contraints. • Happy New Year! Back to school :)

  A brand new year is upon us and it’s time to get cracking with WebMatrix again…and go back to school :).  Last year we ran a successful product walkthrough for WebMatrix Beta 2 with our students from around the world, gathering awesome feedback for the final version of WebMatrix which is coming soon!  I’d like to take this chance to thank all the students who participated in this effort…you have really helped make the final product much better than it would have been otherwise. In 2011, we’re looking, as always, at bigger and better things.  One of the ideas that has been floating around is the concept of a WebMatrix college course that you could take for actual credit.  Of course, this is going to require coordination with college educators, but we think we’re up to the challenge :) If your school is still using an antiquated language to teach their web development 101 course, and you’d like to switch to WebMatrix, we’d like to hear your voice – better yet if you have contacts from your school and would like to be one of the first to give the program a try!  Comment on this post or email wptsdrext at microsoft.com.  We look forward to partnering with you guys ^^.

• Can't access any functions after chown command.

  I am not being to access any functions in my desktop and I don't have an OS besides Ubuntu and I am new to Ubuntu. I think I rebooted my computer thinking that Google Chrome crashed. I opened Google Chrome but it showed opening message but never opened so I restarted my computer. and when my system was loading (I was playing with keyboard dont know what I typed) and when by Ubuntu loaded, I was unable to access anything some of characteristics are listed below: I cannot hear any sound I cannot access wired ethernet connection on the right corner where I usually enable to access internet and I have no internet. There is no local apache server either. when ever I try to start apacer I get setuid must be root or something. When I type sudo then I get message setuid must be root. I cannot access orther external storage devices like pendrive and portable hard drive and cannot mount my other drives with FAT32 filesystem. When I try to start my apache webserver with out typing sudo then I get message cannnot open socket or something like it. I remember also doing command chown -R www-data / earlier and got error message I cannot shutdown my computer, it only logs off

• Free Cloud Mind Map Solution

  As a Software Engineer we had a lot of discussion on SE design. Although we sync every document on the development process on Google Doc, mind map just didn’t fit in Google doc yet. The best we can do is to store a copy and share it online. To me, Mind map is an ir-replaceable piece of tools (yet) as agile note taking tools. And an eFormat is even greater than a paper one, due to the portability and extensibility. Does anyone have a good solution on “cloud-sharing” mind map? (We are using FreeMind at the moment) Thanks

• Can I use dmraid instead of md (mdadm) to make software RAID-1 and RAID-1+0 volumes?

  On a related question about SSDs and TRIM (see: Possible to get SSD TRIM (discard) working on ext4 + LVM + software RAID in Linux? ), it turns out that dmraid may now (or shortly) support TRIM on RAID-1. Typically, we've used md (via mdadm) to create our RAID-1 volumes, then used LVM to create volume groups, then formatted with the file system of our choice (ext4 lately). We've been doing this for years, and Google & ServerFault searches seem to confirm this is the most common way of doing software RAID with volume management. Google searches seem to suggest that dmraid is use for so-called 'fakeRAID' configurations where there's some level of hardware 'help' in the form of RAID BIOS in the controller, which we don't have (and don't want to use - we'd like a fully software solution). Since we'd like to use TRIM on our SSDs, and since md doesn't seem to (yet?) support TRIM, I'm wondering if it's possible to use dmraid instead of md to create RAID-1 (and RAID-1+0) volumes in software, with no hardware support (ie, just plugged into a dumb SATA/SAS bus)?

• Send all traffic over VPN connection not working Windows VPN host

  I am trying to get a mac (10.8) to connect to thru vpn to a server running Windows Server 2008 R2 pass all requests from the mac to the server. The VPN is setup and I can connect and access the server thru a web browser, but for all other sites, the DNS lookup fails. I have tried adding a DNS server to the VPN Host. ex. Lets say the the VPN server also hosts a website example.com. I connect to the VPN with my mac and point a browser to example.com and everything works fine. but when I point the browser to google.com it just sits there and will eventually come back with a DNS lookup failed message. HOWEVER: I tried running the command dig @myServersIpHere www.google.com. on the mac and it comes back with correct IP addresses. I really dont know what to do from here. How can I route all requests from my mac, thru my windows server via VPN?

• Using Superuser paths for specific topics

  I have a very specific question, which I have not been able to find the solution I want to search Superuser and other websites using Google, but I want to limit it to a specific subject (e.g. the R programming language). Using Superuser paths for specific topics like "site:http://superuser.com/questions/tagged/r" Does not work, as can be seen when comparing searching using full path compared to searching entire website with more specific question. Also note the first hit being one step in the direction i want, but since this path itself does not hold the questions in its path it does not solve my issue. There should however be a better way to do this, e.g. by having a very specific Google search tag for the R programming language, which would have to be either in the path, on the webpage, or tagged differently. Seeing as Superuser has a good tag system I am optimistic that this can be used to solve my question. Is there a solution to this that always works on Superuser and similar sites?

I searched for it in Google, and I found several ERP such as OpenBravo and Adempiere, but these applications are very big and difficult to use, in fact, I couldn't make them work. I found an application called Ubifactura (made specifically for Colombia), I downloaded the Java source code, but I don't have any idea about how to compile it. I need someone to help me to compile it or just some recommendations for similar software.   Hi, I have a Gigabyte motherboard with an onboard Realtek HD sound card. The card is working perfectly everywhere, except for a single video format, where the voice is distorted, sounds as if it's been passed through a metal tube. Been googling for this, but couldn't find an answer anywhere. The movie plays fine on other systems (got Linux everywhere else), but on this one (winXP-x64-sp2) it just doesn't. • Kubuntu 12.04 - DNS Issues

  Starting yesterday (6/11/12), I've been having many network problems. When requesting a page in chrome, the page hangs on "Sending request" and then will eventually timeout. I'm within a VPN that has it's own DNS server. I've tried to manually set my DNS through the Network-Manager applet and by editing /etc/network/interfaces. Having no luck I unlinked the resolv.conf file and dumped the contents of my old resolv.conf into it. Again having no luck, I deactivated the dnsmasq server in /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf by commenting out the dns=dnsmasq. $ cat NetworkManager.conf [main] plugins=ifupdown,keyfile #dns=dnsmasq no-auto-default=D0:67:E5:EA:B6:6B, [ifupdown] managed=false $ nm-tool NetworkManager Tool State: connected (global) - Device: eth0 [Wired connection 1] ------------------------------------------- Type: Wired Driver: tg3 State: connected Default: yes HW Address: D0:67:E5:EA:B6:6B Capabilities: Carrier Detect: yes Speed: 1000 Mb/s Wired Properties Carrier: on IPv4 Settings: Address: 192.168.254.122 Prefix: 24 (255.255.255.0) Gateway: 192.168.254.2 DNS: 192.168.254.1 What is strange is that the network will work fine for a few minutes then start to timeout. A few minutes later it will work again. I'm unable to hit internal or external sites when it is timing out. When I $dig local sites, I receive no answer. I do receive an answer from google.com. At this point, I would usually blame the DNS Server, especially since when I change to Google's DNS server things work. But, I need to use our internal DNS to hit our internal sites. Nobody else is having issues and they are all using DHCP. This group includes one user who is using 11.04. At this point, I'm at a loss for what to do, so any help would be appreciated.
