  • Nagios send mail when server is down

    - by tzulberti
    I am using nagios 3.06 to monitor the servers. When a service is critical, it sends a mail, but when a server is down no mail is sent. Even if all the services go to critical state, no mail is sent. I have the following configuration: define command {     command_name notify-host-by-email     command_line python /etc/nagios3/send_mail.py "[Nagios] $HOSTNAME$" "******** Nagios ****\n\n Host: $HOSTNAME$\n Description: the server is down" } define command{     command_name notify-service-by-email     command_line python /etc/nagios3/send_mail.py "[Nagios] $HOSTNAME$: $SERVICEDESC$ ($NOTIFICATIONTYPE$)" "***** Nagios *****\n\nNotification Type: $NOTIFICATIONTYPE$\nService: $SERVICEDESC$\nHost: $HOSTALIAS$\nAddress: $HOSTADDRESS$\nState: $SERVICESTATE$\nDate/Time: $LONGDATETIME$\nAdditional Info:$SERVICEOUTPUT$" } The python script is a script to sent a mail. It works if I execute it from the command line, but it doesn't sents an email from nagios. What I am doing wrong? UPDATE: The contact data is: define contact{     contact_name root     alias Root     service_notification_period 24x7     host_notification_period 24x7     service_notification_options w,u,c,r     host_notification_options d,r     service_notification_commands notify-service-by-email     host_notification_commands notify-host-by-email     email [email protected] } define contactgroup{     contactgroup_name admins     alias Nagios Administrators     members root }

  • Upgrade of Ubuntu 8.10 distribution fails due to missing packages

    - by Tim
I have a server that I've forgotten to upgrade for ages, which is still running Intrepid (8.10). I'd like to upgrade it to a newer version of the distribution, so that I can get security patches etc. I found some instructions that tell me to install the package update-manager-core. I tried the following: $ sudo apt-get install update-manager-core but this fails since some of the necessary packages can't be found: ... Err http://archive.ubuntu.com intrepid/main python-apt 0.7.7.1ubuntu4 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.88.40 80] Err http://archive.ubuntu.com intrepid-updates/main update-manager-core 1:0.93.34 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.88.40 80] Failed to fetch http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/p/python-apt/python-apt_0.7.7.1ubuntu4_amd64.deb 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.88.40 80] Failed to fetch http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/u/update-manager/update-manager-core_0.93.34_amd64.deb 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.88.40 80] ... I know that Intrepid is no longer supported, and so I guess some of the necessary files may no longer be maintained. But this seems rather unhelpful: I can't upgrade because it's too old, and the only way to fix this would be to upgrade it. Is there a way round this? Is something else wrong?

  • Mercurial client error 255 and HTTP error 404 when attempting to push large files to server

    - by coderunner
Problem: When attempting to push a changeset that contains 6 large files (.exe, .dmg, etc) to my remote server my client (MacHG) is reporting the error: "Error During Push. Mercurial reported error number 255: abort: HTTP Error 404: Not Found" What does the error even mean?! The only thing unique (that I can tell) about this commit is the size, type, and filenames of the files. How can I determine which exact file within the changeset is failing? How can I delete the corrupt changeset from the repository? Someone reported using "mq" extensions, but it looks overly complicated for what I'm trying to achieve. Background: I can push and pull the following: source files, directories, .class files and a .jar file to and from the server, using both MacHG and toirtoise HG. I successfully committed to my local repository the addition for the first time the 6 large .exe, .dmg etc installer files (about 130Mb total). In the following commit to my local repository, I removed ("untracked" / forget) the 6 files causing the problem, however the previous (failing) changeset is still queued to be pushed to the server (i.e. my local host is trying to push the "add" and then the "remove" to the remote server - and keep aligned with the "keep everything in history" philosophy of the source control system). I can commit .txt .java files etc using TortoiseHG from Windows PCs. I haven't actually testing committing or pushing the same large files using TortoiseHG. Please help! Setup: Client applications = MacHG v0.9.7 (SCM 1.5.4), and TortoiseHG v1.0.4 (SCM 1.5.4) Server = HTTPS, IIS7.5, Mercurial 1.5.4, Python 2.6.5, setup using these instructions: http://www.jeremyskinner.co.uk/mercurial-on-iis7/ In IIS7.5 the CGI handler is configured to handle ALL verbs (not just GET, POST and HEAD). My hgweb.cgi file on the server is as follows: #!/usr/bin/env python # # An example hgweb CGI script, edit as necessary # Path to repo or hgweb config to serve (see 'hg help hgweb') #config = "/path/to/repo/or/config" # Uncomment and adjust if Mercurial is not installed system-wide: #import sys; sys.path.insert(0, "/path/to/python/lib") # Uncomment to send python tracebacks to the browser if an error occurs: #import cgitb; cgitb.enable() from mercurial import demandimport; demandimport.enable() from mercurial.hgweb import hgweb, wsgicgi application = hgweb('C:\inetpub\wwwroot\hg\hgweb.config') wsgicgi.launch(application) My hgweb.config file on the server is as follows: [collections] C:\Mercurial Repositories = C:\Mercurial Repositories [web] baseurl = /hg allow_push = usernamea allow_push = usernameb

  • complete, monospaced Unicode font?

    - by nachik
I'm looking for a good programming font that lets me add comments and string literals in Unicode, usually Japanese and Chinese along with some Latin and Cyrillic languages. So far the situation seems to be "complete, monospace, free, pick 2" and Google is failing me with this (maybe because there are no good ones?). The best I found is Arial Unicode but it's not monospace, which is a big nuisance for me and the editors I use. Not to mention Python indentation when I'm coding Python. (Links, edits are welcome)

  • Best practices for custom http user-agent strings?

    - by Noufal Ibrahim
I'm developing an application that communicates with an internal web service using HTTP. Are there any "best practices" for custom user-agent strings so that I can put a nice one in my app? It's a Python library and the lower transport is Python's own httplib. Should the user-agent string say that or something else?

  • Mercurial hook to disallow committing large binary files

    - by hekevintran
I want to have a Mercurial hook that will run before committing a transaction that will abort the transaction if a binary file being committed is greater than 1 megabyte. I found the following code which works fine except for one problem. If my changeset involves removing a file, this hook will throw an exception. The hook (I'm using pretxncommit = python:checksize.newbinsize): from mercurial import context, util from mercurial.i18n import _ import mercurial.node as dpynode '''hooks to forbid adding binary file over a given size Ensure the PYTHONPATH is pointing where hg_checksize.py is and setup your repo .hg/hgrc like this: [hooks] pretxncommit = python:checksize.newbinsize pretxnchangegroup = python:checksize.newbinsize preoutgoing = python:checksize.nopull [limits] maxnewbinsize = 10240 ''' def newbinsize(ui, repo, node=None, **kwargs): '''forbid to add binary files over a given size''' forbid = False # default limit is 10 MB limit = int(ui.config('limits', 'maxnewbinsize', 10000000)) tip = context.changectx(repo, 'tip').rev() ctx = context.changectx(repo, node) for rev in range(ctx.rev(), tip+1): ctx = context.changectx(repo, rev) print ctx.files() for f in ctx.files(): fctx = ctx.filectx(f) filecontent = fctx.data() # check only for new files if not fctx.parents(): if len(filecontent) > limit and util.binary(filecontent): msg = 'new binary file %s of %s is too large: %ld > %ld\n' hname = dpynode.short(ctx.node()) ui.write(_(msg) % (f, hname, len(filecontent), limit)) forbid = True return forbid The exception: $ hg commit -m 'commit message' error: pretxncommit hook raised an exception: apps/helpers/templatetags/include_extends.py@bced6272d8f4: not found in manifest transaction abort! rollback completed abort: apps/helpers/templatetags/include_extends.py@bced6272d8f4: not found in manifest! I'm not familiar with writing Mercurial hooks, so I'm pretty confused about what's going on. Why does the hook care that a file was removed if hg already knows about it? Is there a way to fix this hook so that it works all the time? Update (solved): I modified the hook to filter out files that were removed in the changeset. def newbinsize(ui, repo, node=None, **kwargs): '''forbid to add binary files over a given size''' forbid = False # default limit is 10 MB limit = int(ui.config('limits', 'maxnewbinsize', 10000000)) ctx = repo[node] for rev in xrange(ctx.rev(), len(repo)): ctx = context.changectx(repo, rev) # do not check the size of files that have been removed # files that have been removed do not have filecontexts # to test for whether a file was removed, test for the existence of a filecontext filecontexts = list(ctx) def file_was_removed(f): """Returns True if the file was removed""" if f not in filecontexts: return True else: return False for f in itertools.ifilterfalse(file_was_removed, ctx.files()): fctx = ctx.filectx(f) filecontent = fctx.data() # check only for new files if not fctx.parents(): if len(filecontent) > limit and util.binary(filecontent): msg = 'new binary file %s of %s is too large: %ld > %ld\n' hname = dpynode.short(ctx.node()) ui.write(_(msg) % (f, hname, len(filecontent), limit)) forbid = True return forbid

  • Minimalistic tools for developer documentation

    - by Pekka
I am currently working on a large PHP CMS / Framework and documenting it extensively as I go along. In addition to phpdoc-style inline comments, I need to document XML structures, details on concepts and practices, write HOWTOs and so on. At the moment, I am using simple OpenOffice documents for that, but I'm unhappy with it and looking for a "real" documentation system. So, I am looking for recommendations for robust, minimalistic, easy-to-use documentation software. I have tried a number of Wikis, most prominently Dokuwiki. I like the open-minded approach, the freedom in editing, and the simplicity, but they provide little support in structuring a multi-chapter documentation, and make basic reorganisation tasks very difficult (e.g. moving pages to a different namespace). Working with the plugins is Cumbersome, and they are not really easy to use. Open Source would be a plus but is not a requirement. Thanks for all the suggestions. I have not had time to look into each one in detail. I will be trying Sphinx, especially because it provides so much support for a good structure. I may update this post later when I'm done and report how it worked out. The suggestions Trac's built-in wiki which is great but for my taste provides too little support for keeping a structure - it's perfect though for "normal", smaller size project documentation Markdown my current favourite because of its minimalism, however not sure yet whether maintaining a structure will be easy enough. A Markdown-Based system would of course be very easy to extend, e.g. to look up cross references from the project's code base. Of course it would be great to find something that already has that out of the box. The DocBook format and to edit, the commercial Oxygen XML Editor - a great standard for building documentation, no doubt. Maybe too "technical" for my purposes as I need something to open quickly, write into and go on coding. Still always worth a mention. Sphinx an Open Source, Python based documentation generator, promising structured documentation and extensive cross-referencing. Interesting and will take a look. Confluence a commercial but very affordable Wiki. XWiki, an Open Source playing in Confluence's league with numerous extensions and connectors to Eclipse and Microsoft Office. TiddlyWiki an open-source Wiki.

  • How do I construct a Django reverse/url using query args?

    - by Andrew Dalke
I have URLs like http://example.com/depict?smiles=CO&width=200&height=200 (and with several other optional arguments) My urls.py contains: urlpatterns = patterns('', (r'^$', 'cansmi.index'), (r'^cansmi$', 'cansmi.cansmi'), url(r'^depict$', cyclops.django.depict, name="cyclops-depict"), I can go to that URL and get the 200x200 PNG that was constructed, so I know that part works. In my template from the "cansmi.cansmi" response I want to construct a URL for the named template "cyclops-depict" given some query parameters. I thought I could do {% url cyclops-depict smiles=input_smiles width=200 height=200 %} where "input_smiles" is an input to the template via a form submission. In this case it's the string "CO" and I thought it would create a URL like the one at top. This template fails with a TemplateSyntaxError: Caught an exception while rendering: Reverse for 'cyclops-depict' with arguments '()' and keyword arguments '{'smiles': u'CO', 'height': 200, 'width': 200}' not found. This is a rather common error message both here on StackOverflow and elsewhere. In every case I found, people were using them with parameters in the URL path regexp, which is not the case I have where the parameters go into the query. That means I'm doing it wrong. How do I do it right? That is, I want to construct the full URL, including path and query parameters, using something in the template. For reference, % python manage.py shell Python 2.6.1 (r261:67515, Feb 11 2010, 00:51:29) [GCC 4.2.1 (Apple Inc. build 5646)] on darwin Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information. • Becoming a professional programmer / software engineer

    - by Matt
This isn't strictly about programming, more about being a programmer, so I'm sorry if its not the right kind of question to ask on this forum (mod, please delete if it isn't) I'm a computer tech in the US Army, and once I'm out I'll have eight years on the job. I'm about to start a degree through an online school (the only way I can get the army to pay for it while I'm still in), and I'm seriously looking at getting a computer science degree. I'm great with computers. I can take one apart and put it back together with my eyes closed. I'm A+ and Network+ certified and I'm getting a couple other CompTIA certs before I get out. I can work Windows as well as anyone on this planet and I'm not terrible with Linux. A job in computers is something I've always wanted. But, aside from being a computer technician, it seems that every job in the field requires programming ability. I like programming as a hobby. I programmed TI BASIC in high school and I'm teaching myself Python, but that's as far as my experience goes. That sort of brings me to my questions: I've always heard that the first language is the most difficult, and once you learn it well then all the others sort of fall into place for you. Is that true? Like, if I spend the next eight months mastering Python, will I pretty much be able to pick up at least fair proficiency in any other OO language within a month of studying it or whatever? How easy is it to burn out? the biggest thing I'm afraid of is just burning out on programming. I can go all day long if I'm programming strictly for my own personal desire, but I can imagine it being really easy to burn out after a few years of programming to deadlines and certain specifications. Especially if its a big project involving a dozen different designers. From what I told you about myself, would I already be qualified to work as a regular technician (geek squad type or maybe running a computer repair shop). Is Python a good base to learn from? I've heard that it makes you hate other languages because they feel more convoluted when learning, but also that its a great beginner language. If you're a professional programmer, did you have any of the same fears? Would you recommend that I stick to computer repair and Python rather than try to get into corporate programming? (just from what you've read in this thread, anyway) Thanks for taking the time to read all this and answer (if you did)

  • Optimizing Haskell code

    - by Masse
I'm trying to learn Haskell and after an article in reddit about Markov text chains, I decided to implement Markov text generation first in Python and now in Haskell. However I noticed that my python implementation is way faster than the Haskell version, even Haskell is compiled to native code. I am wondering what I should do to make the Haskell code run faster and for now I believe it's so much slower because of using Data.Map instead of hashmaps, but I'm not sure I'll post the Python code and Haskell as well. With the same data, Python takes around 3 seconds and Haskell is closer to 16 seconds. It comes without saying that I'll take any constructive criticism :). import random import re import cPickle class Markov: def __init__(self, filenames): self.filenames = filenames self.cache = self.train(self.readfiles()) picklefd = open("dump", "w") cPickle.dump(self.cache, picklefd) picklefd.close() def train(self, text): splitted = re.findall(r"(\w+|[.!?',])", text) print "Total of %d splitted words" % (len(splitted)) cache = {} for i in xrange(len(splitted)-2): pair = (splitted[i], splitted[i+1]) followup = splitted[i+2] if pair in cache: if followup not in cache[pair]: cache[pair][followup] = 1 else: cache[pair][followup] += 1 else: cache[pair] = {followup: 1} return cache def readfiles(self): data = "" for filename in self.filenames: fd = open(filename) data += fd.read() fd.close() return data def concat(self, words): sentence = "" for word in words: if word in "'\",?!:;.": sentence = sentence[0:-1] + word + " " else: sentence += word + " " return sentence def pickword(self, words): temp = [(k, words[k]) for k in words] results = [] for (word, n) in temp: results.append(word) if n > 1: for i in xrange(n-1): results.append(word) return random.choice(results) def gentext(self, words): allwords = [k for k in self.cache] (first, second) = random.choice(filter(lambda (a,b): a.istitle(), [k for k in self.cache])) sentence = [first, second] while len(sentence) < words or sentence[-1] is not ".": current = (sentence[-2], sentence[-1]) if current in self.cache: followup = self.pickword(self.cache[current]) sentence.append(followup) else: print "Wasn't able to. • Django model fields getter / setter

    - by pistacchio
Hi, is there something like getters and setters for django model's fields? For example, I have a text field in which i need to make a string replace before it get saved (in the admin panel, for both insert and update operations) and make another, different replace each time it is read. Those string replace are dynamic and need to be done at the moment of saving and reading. As I'm using python 2.5, I cannot use python 2.6 getters / setters. Any help?
