    We usually have a single-word shorthand for most complexities we encounter in algorithmic analysis: O(1) == "constant" O(log n) == "logarithmic" O(n) == "linear" O(n^2) == "quadratic" O(n^3) == "cubic" O(2^n) == "exponential" We encounter algorithms with O(n log n) complexity with some regularity (think of all the algorithms dominated by sort complexity) but as far as I know, there's no single word we can use in English to refer to that complexity. Is this a gap in my knowledge, or a real gap in our English discourse on computational complexity?

  • Recommend a basic 3D graphics card for HP ProLiant DL360 G5?

    We've got an HP ProLiant DL360 G5 running Windows Server 2008 R2 that needs a graphics card with 3D acceleration (the integrated ATI ES1000 graphics don't have this). This is an unfortunate requirement that we can't avoid, as it is required by S/W installed on the server that is beyond our control. Looks like the PCI-Express slots in the box are x8 (1 full and 1 low profile). We just need a basic card, as long as it has the 3D acceleration. Any recommendations?

    Hi guys, I've got a Windows 2003 x86 server with a small WSS3.0 installation. Now we've bought a new server with Windows Server 2008 x64 and installed SharePoint Foundation 2010 on it. I wish to transfer the few lists and their view from the old WSS3 to SP2010. How should I do this? All the migration websites I've read talk about preparing, but no-one really say how to migrate from one x86 2007 server to a x64 2010 server. Cheers Nik

    I've been pretty happy with my G1 thus far, but I turned it on this morning and it gave me a screen showing multicolored bars and the following text: DREA100 PVT 32B HBOOT-0.95.0000 CPLD-4 RADIO-2.22.19.261 Sep 2 2008 Later down it says "Serial0". Please help me, I don't want to wipe my phone and lose my data on it! I haven't rooted it and have no interest in rooting it. I got Cupcake over the wire, not via hacking.

I'm currently using Windows 2000 Server Terminal Server, but now I have to switch to something better because of performance/color issues.     I have a fresh new Windows Server 2008 R2 Domain Setup and a ForeFront TMG installation. Both of them are newly installed. I enabled VPN client access and configured address assignment method. Now when I try to connect to VPN over internet (with Windows 7 client) I receive Error 619 stating that the credentials are wrong. Of course credentials are not wrong, something else is wrong here. Any help?

    I recently asked a question about upgrading from 2003 to 2008, but i realised this is a lot harder to do, the only reason i want to upgrade is to have increase the RAM Windows 2003 Standard Edition R2 only supports 4GB Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition R2 supports up to 32GB Windows 2003 Datacentre Edition R2 supports up to 64GB So basically i need to do an in-place upgrade to either Enterpirse or Datacentre without losing any data is this possible? Also is one easier to upgrade to then the other?

  • PXE-E32 TFTP Open Timeout While Attempting to PXE Boot from Windows Deployment Services

    I'm running Windows Deployment Services on Windows Server 2008 R2 on top of an ESX 4.0 box. This is the only function of this VM instance, although it had previously functioned as an AD Domain Controller. My DHCP server is running on our primary Domain Controller, which is also Server 2008 R2, but running on metal. Everything was working perfectly until we recently had our backup generator fail during a power outage, causing all of our servers and networking equipment to lose power for a period of time. When we brought all of our equipment back up, everything was working as expected except for WDS. Our network is split up into several different vlans. Now, depending on which vlan the client computer is on, it's behaving differently when attempting to PXE boot into WDS. Our servers are located on the 10.55.x.x vlan, which, due to the nature of it, has no DHCP server active in it. The first computer we plugged in happened to be in the 10.99.x.x vlan, which is supposed to be reserved for network management devices (i.e. switches), but we've been using it occasionally otherwise. That computer gave us PXE-E11 ARP Timeout errors. When we moved to a different computer on the 10.19.x.x vlan (for general purpose use), it finally gets an IP from DHCP, but it presents us with a very stumping PXE-E32 TFTP Open Timeout error. Before the power outage, it didn't matter which vlan a device was on; it would PXE boot and image just fine. I've made no changes to anything server-side. Everything is configured exactly the same way it was on my WDS and DHCP servers as before the power outage. I've tried several different computers, including different models. All of this, combined with the quirky behavior depending on the vlan, makes me think something went wrong in one or more of our switches, probably because of the power outage. Unfortunately, I'm no network guy, and I know very little about how to configure our switches properly. Is this an issue with switches, etc? If so, how can I fix it? Is there some magical option I'm not aware of? Does anybody out there have any hunches? I've pretty much exhausted my ideas. Our main switch is an HP Procurve 5406. We also have 3x HP Procurve 4208 switches. The ESX Server is an HP ProLiant DL380 G6. The WDS VM is currently using the VMXNET3 network adaptor, but we've also tried the E1000 adaptor.

    After a Windows update I cannot connect to a Windows Server 2008 machine via RDP. As an alternative, I remotely installed UltraVNC using PsExec. The WinVNC service starts successfully but when I try to connect remotely, I receive the following error message: This server does not have a valid password enabled. Until a password is set, incoming connections cannot be enabled. Since I don't have desktop access to the machine, how do I set the password?

    EDIT New info: Navigating to localhost:1434 in Chrome gives me an "ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE", while other ports give me an "Oops! This link appears to be broken". So it seems to binding ok there? So here's my setup so far: I've configured Windows Firewall to allow TCP on 1433 and UDP on 1434. I've set up SQL Server to use any IP on Port 1433 (using the SQL Server Configuration Manager). My hosts file contains the default entries ("127.0.0.1 localhost" and "::1 localhost"). I sometimes have a debug session of Visual Web Developer running a webserver, but it's on a specific port (localhost:5XXXX). What I've tried: I CAN ping localhost in a cmd prompt. I CAN connect to the database through SSMS if I specify 127.0.0.1 or ::1 as the server name. I CAN'T connect to the database through SSMS (or ADO.NET) if I specify localhost as the server name. I've tried both Windows and SQL Authentication The error I get is the standard Can't connect to localhost. Additional Information -- Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding. (Microsoft Sql Server) Other considerations: Stopping the Visual Web Developer web server from the taskbar doesn't affect the sql problem. The SQL error log says that it's listening on some piped name url at start up (I don't see how this would affect localhost but not 127.0.0.1 though). I could probably just use 127.0.0.1 everywhere, but it scares me that localhost isn't working and I'd like to figure out why. I'm not much of a networking or sql server guy so I'm stuck. If you want me to try anything to help diagnose just put it in a comment and I'll give it a go.   • MDT 2012 Image Capture

    I am using MDT 2012 Update 1. Attempting to Deploy 2012 DC to a VM, run windows updates, and then sysprep/capture that image. This is the same task sequence process I have used for Windows 7 / 2008 R2 and it works fine. However, for 2012 DC it deploys the image, starts running/installing updates and then on reboot it goes to a "Choose an option" screen if I choose "Exit and continue to Windows Server 2012" it reboots and goes back to same screen. Any ideas?

    I'm trying to back up some data on an external hard drive and am finding the transfer rate to be unbearably slow. My environment is as follows: Macbook Pro Unibody (late 2008) Windows 7 RC, 64-bit Lacie, rugged 500GB portable hard drive I have tried using a number of methods including simple copying in Explorer, Teracopy, Crashplan, and Windows backup. I am averaging around 1MB/s which seems terribly slow. How do I identify what is the cause of this slow file transfer, and then how do I go about addressing the issue.
