• "Priming" a whole database in MSSQL for first-hit speed

  For a particular apps I have a set of queries that I run each time the database has been restarted for any reason (server reboot usually). These "prime" SQL Server's page cache with the common core working set of the data so that the app is not unusually slow the first time a user logs in afterwards. One instance of the app is running on an over-specced arrangement where the SQL box has more RAM than the size of the database (4Gb in the machine, the DB is under 1.5Gb currently and unlikely to grow too much relative to that in the near future). Is there a neat/easy way of telling SQL Server to go away and load everything into RAM? It could be done the hard way by having a script scan sysobjects & sysindexes and running SELECT * FROM <table> WITH(INDEX(<index_name>)) ORDER BY <index_fields> for every key and index found, which should cause every used page to be read at least once and so be in RAM, but is there a cleaner or more efficient way? All planned instances where the database server is stopped are out-of-normal-working-hours (all the users are at most one timezone away and unlike me none of them work at silly hours) so such a process (until complete) slowing down users more than the working set not being primed at all would is not an issue.

  I am getting an error at public Rectangle(double width, double height){ saying that it's an invalid method declaration, return type required. I'm not sure how to fix it. These are also my instructions for my assignment: Write a super class encapsulating a rectangle. A rectangle has two attributes representing the width and the height of the rectangle. It has methods returning the perimeter and the area of the rectangle. This class has a subclass, encapsulating a parallelepiped, or box. A parallelepiped has a rectangle as its base, and another attribute, its length. • Firefox/vista not showing div tag

  Hi, I have a div tag which should be displayed at the bottom of a page given a set of circumstances. On my machine XP/IE, chrome, firefox, opera (all latest versions) the div shows up fine. But on my bosses machine, running vista with Firefox 3.6 for some reason the div tag is not showing up. However, if i go to another machine with vista and firefox the div tag shows up fine. My question is, what could have been set in firefox that would cause this div tag to now be displayed. • Finding Common Phrases in MS SQL TEXT Column

  Hello All, Short Desc: I'm curious to see if I can use SQL Analysis services or some other MS SQL service to mine some data for me that will show commonalities between SQL TEXT fields in a dataset. Long Desc I am looking at a subset of data that consists of about 10,000 rows of TEXT blobs which are used as a notes column in a issue tracking (ticketing) software. I would like to use something out of the box (without having to build something) that might be able to parse through all of the rows and find commonly used byte sequences in the "Notes" column. In other words, I want to find commonly used phrases (two to three word phrases, so 9 - 20 character sections of the TEXT blob). This will help me better determine if associate's notes contain similar phrases (troubleshooting techniques) that we could standardize in our troubleshooting process flow. Closing Note I'd really rather not build an application to do this as my method will probably not be the most efficient way to do it. Hopefully all this makes sense. Please let me know in the comments if anything needs clarification. Thanks in advance for your help.

  I'm interning for an NGO in India (Seva Mandir, http://sevamandir.org) and trying to fix their broken "subscribe to newsletter" box. Because the staff isn't very sophisticated and our web host isn't great, I decided to send the relevant data to the publications person via mail() instead of storing it in a MySQL database. I know that it's best to treat user input as malicious, and I've searched the SO forums for posts relevant to escaping user data for sending in a mail message. I know the data should be escaped; what should I be worried about and what's the best way to sanitize the input before emailing it? Form flow: 1. User enters email on homepage and clicks Submit 2. User enters name, address, more information on second page (bad usability, I know, but my boss asked me to) and clicks "Submit" 3. Collect the data via $_POST and email it to the publications editor (and possibly send a confirmation to the subscriber). I am going to sanitize the email in step 2 and the other data in step 3. • HTML checkbox field is being passed to PHP as checked even when it is not

  Hello all, First of all thanks in advance, this has been very frustrating and I'm hoping someone can see something I'm not, I am definitely no php expert. Well here' what is going on. I have a form where I have a checkbox for people to opt in to our newletter. The form element looks like this: <label for=newsletter accesskey=N class="checkbox">Signup for Cloverton's Newsletter</label> <input name="newsletter" type="checkbox" id="newsletter" value="Yes" style="width:20px;" /> That is then submitted to a php file with this code: if (isset($_POST['newsletter']) && $_POST['newsletter'] == 'Yes'){ echo "newletter yes"; $newsletter = 1; }else{ echo "newsletter no"; $newsletter = 0; } $newsletter is then inserted into a database field. The issue is that whether the box is checked or not it is being sent to php as true, so every entry is receiving the newsletter. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

• Why does the following Toggle function perform four different operations instead of two?

  You can see the implementation here: http://jsfiddle.net/BMWZd/8/ What I am trying to do, when you click on 'John Brown', you see the first element at top turn black. When you click it again, the border of the dotted circle disappears, then when you click 'John Brown' again, you see something else, then finally once again it all disappears. What I am trying to achieve is when you click it once, everything turns black (like it does now), then you click it again, everything disappears and goes back to the original state. Important distinction, what I mean is...when one of the names in the box are not clicked. So if you clicked John Brown then moved to Jack Dorsey, the #1 at top should stay black. But if you were to click Jack Dorsey again, i.e. you 'unclicked' it, then it should disappear. Also, how do I tighten it up, so that it responds quicker. Now when you click it, it feels like there is a little bit of a lag between when it was clicked and when it responds. • Best way to databind a Winforms control to a nullable type?

  I'm currently using winforms databinding to wire up a data editing form. I'm using the netTiers framework through CodeSmith to generate my data objects. For database fields that allow nulls it creates nullable types. I've found that using winforms databinding the controls won't bind properly to nullable types. I've seen solutions online suggesting that people create new textbox classes that can handle the nullable types but that could be a pain having to swap out the textboxes on the forms I've already created. Initially I thought it would be great to use an extension method to do it. Basically creating an extension property for the textbox class and bind to that. From my limited extension method experience and doing a bit of checking online it looks like you can't do an extension property. As far as I can tell, binding has to be through a property since it needs to be able to get or set the value so an extension method wouldn't work. I'd love to find a clean way to retrofit these forms using something like extension methods but if I have to create new textbox and combo box controls that's what I'll do. My project is currently limited to .Net 2.0 due to the requirement to run on Windows 2000. Any suggestions?

• Can't get focus on a TextBox inside a ListBox using Silverlight

  I'm having a little trouble in silverlight with a listBox containing databound textBox elements. The items display correctly in the list and the textBox is populated correctly but I can't get focus on the text box in the list. If I hover over the edges of the textBox it highlights but it won't let me click into it to edit the text. Any ideas? • Side by side madness - running binaries on different computer (with a twist)

  Here's my configuration: Computer A - Windows 7, MS Visual Studio 2005 patched for Win7 compatibility (8.0.50727.867) Computer B - Windows XP SP2, MS Visual Studio 2005 installed (8.0.50727.42) My project has some external dependencies (prebuilt DLLs - either build on A or downloaded from the Internet), a couple of DLLs built from sources and one executable. I am mostly developing on A and all is fine there. At some point I try to build my project on computer B, copying the prebuilt DLLs to the output folder. Everything builds fine, but trying to start my application I get The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0150002).... The event log contains two of those: Dependent Assembly Microsoft.VC80.CRT could not be found and Last Error was The referenced assembly is not installed on your system. plus the slightly more amusing Generate Activation Context failed for some.dll. Reference error message: The operation completed successfully. At this point I'm trying my Google-Fu, but in vain - virtually all hits are about running binaries on machines without Visual Studio installed. In my case, however, the executables fail to run on the computer they are built. Next step was to try dependency walker and it baffled me even more - my DLLs built from sources on the same box cannot find MSVCR80.DLL and MSVCP80.DLL, however the executable seems to be alright in respect to those two DLLs i.e. when I open the executable with dependency walker it shows that the MSVC?80.DLLs can be found, but when I open one of my DLLs it says they cannot. That's where I am completely out of ideas what to do so I'm asking you, dear stackoverflow :) I admit I'm a bit blurry on the whole side-by-side thing, so general reading on the topic will also be appreciated.

• Javascript Mouseover bubbling from children

  Ive got the following html setup: <div id="div1"> <div id="content1">blaat</div> <div id="content1">blaat2</div> </div> it is styled so you can NOT hover div1 without hovering one of the other 2 divs. Now i've got a mouseout on div1. The problem is that my div1.mouseout gets triggered when i move from content1 to content2, because their mouseouts are bubbling. and the event's target, currentTarget or relatedTarget properties are never div1, since it is never hovered directly... I've been searching mad for this, but I can only find articles and solutions for problems who are the reverse of what I need. It seems trivial but I can't get it to work... The mouseout of div1 should ONLY get triggered when the mouse leaves div1. One of the possibilities would be to set some data on mouse enter and mouseleave, but I'm convinced this should work out of the box, since it is just a mouseout... EDIT: bar.mouseleave(function(e) { if ($(e.currentTarget).attr('id') == bar.attr('id')) { bar.css('top', '-'+contentOuterHeight+'px'); $('#floatable-bar #floatable-bar-tabs span').removeClass('active'); } }); changed the mouseout to mouseleave and the code worked...

• Make Ant's delete task fail when a directory exists and is not deleted but not when it doesn't exist

We run the build in such a way that it entirely recreates the structures necessary for testing and deployment every time to avoid stale class files and such. With the way that delete currently is set up, a failure to delete a file does not fail the build and I'd like it to. I don't want it to fail the build if the file doesn't exist though. If it doesn't exist then what I'm asking it to do has already happened. Thoughts?

• Resume Activity with back button

  I have an application I am creating with a DashboardActivity & a SettingsActivity. On the dashboard, I have one object displayed, but when I go into settings, I want to be able to select/deselect X options. Once the user clicks the back button, I save that data locally and to the server. Once the phone receives a success message from the server that it was stored properly, I want to reload the dashboard. I thought I would do this with the onPause and onResume, but they are called when the DashboardActivity is first created. What would be the best way to reload the dashboard by calling my web service after the settings were saved to the server? • What is a good programming language/environment for Linux database applications?

  I could use some advice on my move from the Windows world to Linux. For my business, I have used VB6 and Microsoft Access with both Access databases and SQL server in the past. The easy to use forms, report writers and programming language were perfect for CRUD apps and analysis for our small hotel/restaurant business. After using Linux at home for some time I would like to convert our small business. Our server is already a Linux box using Samba. I am happy with the OpenOffice.org applications instead of Microsoft Office. The only thing which is holding me back is a desktop database application where I can develop the forms and reports we require. Base does not seem to be up to the job yet from my experience. I would like something like VB.Net with visual studio (express) but I would like to avoid Mono – I just don’t see the point of it. (You can correct me if I’m wrong.) But a good collection of forms, controls and a good report writer would be ideal. I have looked at web based stuff like Ruby on Rails, but I think a webserver for our 5 pc network is overkill. I don’t mind running a proper database on our Ubuntu 9.10 server. I may have exposed a few prejudices above but my mind is open. Any thoughts?

• Object Oriented Programming in AS3

  I'm building a game in as3 that has balls moving and bouncing off the walls. When the user clicks an explosion appears and any ball that hits that explosion explodes too. Any ball that then hits that explosion explodes and so on. My question is what would be the best class structure for the balls. I have a level system to control levels and such and I've already come up with working ways to code the balls. Here's what I've done. My first attempt was to create a class for Movement, Bounce, Explosion and finally Orb. These all extended each other in the order I just named them. I got it working but having Bounce extend Movement and Explosion extend Bounce, it just doesn't seem very object oriented because what if I wanted to add a box class that didn't move, but did explode? I would need a separate class for that explosion. My second attempt was to create Movement, Bounce and Explosion without extending anything. Instead I passed in a reference to the Orb class to each. Then the class stores that reference and does what it needs to do based on events that are dispatched by the Orb such as update, which was broadcast from Orb every enter frame. This would drive the movement and bounce and also the explosion when the time came. This attempt worked as well but it just doesn't seem right. I've also thought about using Interfaces but because they are more of an outline for classes, I feel like code reuse goes out the window as each class would need its own code for a specific task even if that task is exactly the same. I feel as if I'm searching for some form of multiple inheritance for classes that as3 does not support. Can someone explain to me a better way of doing what I'm attempting to do? Am I being to "Object Oriented" by having classed for Movement, Bounce, Explosion and Orb? Are Interfaces the way to go? Any feedback is appreciated!

• Running migration on server when deploying with capistrano

  Hi, I'm trying to deploy my rails application with capistrano, but I'm having some trouble running my migrations. In my development environment I just use sqlite as my database, but on my production server I use MySQL. The problem is that I want the migrations to run from my server and not my local machine, as I am not able to connect to my database from a remote location. My server setup: A debian box running ngnix, passenger, mysql and a git repository. What is the easiest way to do this? update: Here's my deploy script: set :application, "example.com" set :domain, "example.com" set :scm, :git set :repository, "[email protected]:project.git" set :use_sudo, false set :deploy_to, "/var/www/example.com" role :web, domain role :app, domain role :db, "localhost", :primary = true after "deploy", "deploy:migrate" When I run cap deploy, everything is working fine until it tries to run the migration. Here's the error I'm getting: ** [deploy:update_code] exception while rolling back: Capistrano::ConnectionError, connection failed for: localhost (Errno::ECONNREFUSED: Connection refused - connect(2)) connection failed for: localhost (Errno::ECONNREFUSED: Connection refused - connect(2))) This is why I need to run the migration from the server and not from my local machine. Any ideas?

• Grails Deployment - Fastest way to get deployed?

  Hi All, If anyone has or is running a Grails application on their server I would appreciate some details on where to go after creating the WAR. Background I chose grails because with Google App Engine and the App Engine Plugin deployment should have been trivial. This issue is that there is a bug which makes any application pretty much unusable, I wish this had been more prominent so I didn't have to get to the point of seeing the error myself before I was aware of it. The next option was EC2 and the Cloud Tools plugin, it seems Cloud Tools worked with grails 1.0 but doesn't work with the current 1.2.1 due to issues getting the JAR dependencies. It also seems that Cloud Tools has been succeeded by Cloud Foundry which is in beta, will cost extra money and has limited places (I signed up but haven't got an e-mail). Question My application is painfully trivial, it has a small load, small data requirements and doesn't need to scale past 5 users. How can I deploy my grails app as quickly and painlessly as possible? Specifically: Are there any hosting companies that have tomcat installed on their servers out of the box that I can sign up to and use that will just work? Do you know of any simple tutorials for getting a grails application deployed to EC2 without Cloud Tools? Thanks in advance, Gav Side-note: I picked grails because of good advice from SO, it should have been a very short time from development to deployed product except the tools for auto-deployment aren't that mature and I've never configured a server before.

• Qt/MFC Migration Framework tool: properly exiting DLL?

  I'm using the Qt/MFC Migration Framework tool following this example: http://doc.qt.nokia.com/solutions/4/qtwinmigrate/winmigrate-qt-dll-example.html The dll I build is loaded by a 3rd party MFC-based application. The 3rd party app basically calls one of my exported DLL functions to startup my plugin and another function to shutdown my application. Currently I'm doing nothing in my shutdown function. When I load my DLL in the 3rd party app the startup function is called and my DLL starts successfully and I can see my message box. However if I shutdown my plugin and then try to start it again I get the following error: Debug Error! Program: <my 3rd party app> Module: 4.7.1 File: global\qglobal.cpp Line: 2262 ASSERT failure in QWidget: "Widgets must be created in the GUI thread.", file kernel\qwidget.cpp line 1233 (Press Retry to debug the application) Abort Retry Ignore This makes me think I'm not doing something to properly shutdown my plugin. What do I need to do to shut it down properly? UPDATE: http://doc.qt.nokia.com/solutions/4/qtwinmigrate/winmigrate-walkthrough.html says: The DLL also has to make sure that it can be loaded together with other Qt based DLLs in the same process (in which case a QApplication object will probably exist already), and that the DLL that creates the QApplication object remains loaded in memory to avoid other DLLs using memory that is no longer available to the process. So I wonder if there is some problem where I need to somehow keep the original DLL loaded no matter what?

• Set value of hidden field in a form using jQuery's ".val()" doesn't work !

  I've been trying to set the value of a hidden field in a form using jQuery, but without success. Here is a sample code that explains the problem. If I keep the input type to "text", it works without any trouble. • jQuery ajax delete script not actually deleting.

  I have a little personal webapp that I'm working on. I have a link that, when clicked, is supposed to make an ajax call to a php that is supposed to delete that info from a database. For some unknown reason, it won't actually delete the row from the database. I've tried everything I know, but still nothing. I'm sure it's something incredibly easy... Here are the scripts involved. • Launch command on remote Windows machine, given admin credentials

  I have a Windows Server 2008 instance on Amazon EC2 (Amazon's cloud compute platform, which provides VMs in the cloud). It has an external IP, and I have an admin account on the box. I would like to 'bootstrap' this instance remotely i.e. I want to run commands to download, install and configure apps on it, all without having to log on even once. I have figured out how to do this to a remote, domain-joined computer using WMI. I can even use psexec to get what I want, as long as the remote computer is part of the domain. However, I have NOT been able to do for a remote computer on EC2. Here are some specific restrictions: 1) The remote computer is not part of my domain, hence no Kerberos 2) The remote computer does not have a cert I trust, or vice versa I am sure I am running into to some auth/trust restriction. Is there any way I can run a single command on the remote, given that I have admin privileges? I'm not tied down to using WMI, but I do need to run a command somehow. Feels like this should be a solved problem.
