• REST API wrapper - class design for 'lite' object responses

  I am writing a class library to serve as a managed .NET wrapper over a REST API. I'm very new to OOP, and this task is an ideal opportunity for me to learn some OOP concepts in a real-life situation that makes sense to me. Some of the key resources/objects that the API returns are returned with different levels of detail depending on whether the request is for a single instance, a list, or part of a "search all resources" response. This is obviously a good design for the REST API itself, so that full objects aren't returned (thus increasing the size of the response and therefore the time taken to respond) unless they're needed. So, to be clear: .../car/1234.json returns the full Car object for 1234, all its properties like colour, make, model, year, engine_size, etc. Let's call this full. .../cars.json returns a list of Car objects, but only with a subset of the properties returned by .../car/1234.json. Let's call this lite. ...search.json returns, among other things, a list of car objects, but with minimal properties (only ID, make and model). Let's call this lite-lite. I want to know what the pros and cons of each of the following possible designs are, and whether there is a better design that I haven't covered: Create a Car class that models the lite-lite properties, and then have each of the more detailed responses inherit and extend this class. Create separate CarFull, CarLite and CarLiteLite classes corresponding to each of the responses. Create a single Car class that contains (nullable?) properties for the full response, and create constructors for each of the responses which populate it to the extent possible (and maybe include a property that returns the response type from which the instance was created). I expect among other things there will be use cases for consumers of the wrapper where they will want to iterate through lists of Cars, regardless of which response type they were created from, such that the three response types can contribute to the same list. Happy to be pointed to good resources on this sort of thing, and/or even told the name of the concept I'm describing so I can better target my research.

• Google Analytics Not tracking data correctly IP-address issue?

  I have developed a small site for a client and the site has been placed inside a <iframe> at the clients site. The GA script is tracking visitors and pageviews at both ends. But the problem is that on my clients side the visitor-count is more than double what they are on my end (20 000 vs 5 000). At first I thought that it was being duplicated at some point but when I checked my Crazy-Egg account I saw that it had tracked over 10 000 visits and then stopped tracking because that was my limit on the account. The page my site is on is on a IP-address (http://XXX.XXX.XX.X/campaign/) and not on a "valid url". Could that be an issue why some of the visitors isn't beeing tracked? Thanks in advance

• Has anyone used game salad before and how does it compare with cocos2d in terms of 2d game development

  First a short intro. I am new to the game development space and want to make some 2d games for iOS. I first come across cocos2d and kobold but then wanted something more graphical for rapid prototyping. I then found Game Maker which doesn't support iOS but is fairly easy to learn and then found Game Salad which supports iOS as well as other platforms. I know this question has been ask before but I want to know in terms of the types of games I want to develop what an learning investment path would be best. The types of games genre I am interest are: Side scrollers Simple games like diamond dash or ninja fruits, shanghai, etc Old fashioned zelda or dragonquest type (nintendo fan here:-) 2d adventure RPG games (real time or turn based) Mystery turn based games like carmen sandiego, wizardry, myst etc. So now the question becomes Which game development environment should I invest my time in learning. Game Salad or cocos2d? It would seem game salad would be great for quickies being graphical but in terms of 2d platform games etc would there be speed/performance/feature penalties? Are there certain 2d games genre of the 4 above that Game salad is better at while certain type cocos2d would be better at? Anyone with experience of both can share some pointers? • Thinking about open-sourcing quiz project [closed]

  I was thinking about starting an open source project. I have a few projects that might work ok as an open project but thought I might dip my toe into the water with a simple quiz project. The idea is you can add questions to a quiz, arrange questions by topic, difficulty or location. Users would hopefully get an interesting quiz, tuned to their ability. At the end they'd get a score and hopefully they might provide either some feedback on the questions or even supply a few questions of their own. I couldn't see a similar project (fame's last words). I have a basic version of the project that gives the user a bunch of questions to answer in 10 minutes. It doesn't currently group the questions into topics, and no feedback is taken. I've also been told the graphical questions don't work on Ipads for some reason. Would this be a suitable project to go open source? I did find various quiz's out there but all seemed rather narrowly focused. I really wanted something that could cover any type of question on any type of subject. I prefer to keep the questions in MySQL but I could see how this might make it more difficult for others to get on board - should I move to data files? • Simple (and fast) dices physics

  I'm programming a throw of 5 dices in Actionscript 3 + AwayPhysics (BulletPhysics port). I had a lot of fun tweaking frictions, masses etc. and in the end I found best results with more physics ticks per frame. Currently I use 10 ticks per frame (1/60 s) and it's OK, though I see a difference in plus for 20 ticks. Even though it's only 5 cubes (dices) in a box (or a floor with 3 walls really) I can't simulate 20 ticks in a frame and keep FPS at 60 on a medium-aged PC. That's why I decided to precompute frames for animation, finishing it in around 1700 ticks in 2 seconds. The flash player is freezed for these 2 seconds, and I'm afraid that this result will be more of a 5 seconds or even more, if I'll simulate multi-threading and compute frames in background of some other heavy processes and CPU drawing (dices is only a part of this game). Because I want both players to see dices roll in same way, I can't compute physics when having free resources, and build a buffer for at least one throw of each type (where type is number of dices thrown). I'm afraid players will see a "preparing dices........." message too often and for too long. I think the only solution to this problem is replacing PhysicsEngine with something simpler, or creating own physicsEngine. Do You have any formulas for cube-cube and cube-wall collision detection, and for calculating how their angular and linear velocities should change after a collision occurs?

  So recently I had an ASPX page that could be visited by two different user types.  User type A would use Master Page 1 and user type B would use Master Page 2.  So I put together a proof of concept to see if it was possible to change the MasterPage in code.  I found a great article on the Microsoft ASP.net website. • Reliance on Outlook (been a looong time, I know)

  Do you feel that your development group too reliant on Outlook? Have you reached a point that you have to search your email for pertinent information when asked? What are you using? I realized things had gotten out of hand a couple weeks ago over a weekend. I was at my in-laws house (in the country, no PC/laptop, no internet connection; and I get an email on my phone that I needed to reply to, but I couldn't send without deleting items from my inbox/sent items/etc. Now mind you, I have rules set up to move stuff into folders, and files more than a month old are automatically moved to the PST; but generally don't manually move items to a PST until I have had a chance to 'work' the item. Please don't bother mocking my process, it's just the way I work. That being said, it was a frustrating process of 'I need all this information, what can I afford to lose'. I work on an International project (think lots of customers), and conversations in 9 or 10 different directions about 10-20 different things are not abnormal for a given day. I have found myself looking data up in Outlook because that's where it is. I think that I have reached the point now, where I don't feel that Outlook is up to the task of organizing the data that it contains.   When you have that many emails (200 or so a day), information seems to get lost at times, and I find that Outlook's search capabilities are lacking. Additionally, I find that any sort of organizational 'system' of sorting emails that can cover multiple topics is a lost cause. But at the same time, the old process of taking the information that I got from emails and moving it into another 'notes' type of program has proved to be too time consuming. Anyone out there have some better type of system? (Comments about the capacity of my brain, and it's ability to recall information not needed.)

• problems establishing ssh connection

  since two days I am facing a really weird problem. I have receantly installed ubuntu server 14.04 LTS on a workstation. It has a fix IP address, which I can successfully ping from other computers in the network. But when I try to establish a ssh connection from a windows computer via putty I get some strange errors, which I cannot fix. The Problem is that putty takes a really long time trying to establish a connection. After about 10 seconds I get the following error: Network error: Software caused connection abort But when I click the Restart Session option a several times after putty shows the error message, I can login in. But now comes the other problem. When the login appears on the putty console I type in the user, but it really takes a long time until I can type in the password to login. This is what I already tried: sshd: ALL in etc/hosts.allow commented line session optional pam_motd.so in etc/pam.d/login and etc/pam.d/sshd configured the firewall with: sudo iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport ssh -j ACCEPT checked if ssh server is listening on port 22 UseDNS no in etc/ssh/sshd_config I hope someone can help me, because this problem is really annoying. • Help with Abstract Factory Pattern

  I need help with a abstract factory pattern design. This question is a continuation of: Design help with parallel process I am really confused where I should be initializing all of the settings for each type of medium (ex: RS232, TCP/IP, etc). Attached is the drawing on how I am setting up the pattern: As shown, when a medium is created, each medium imposes a ICreateMedium interface. I would assume that the Create() method also create the proper object, such as SerialPort serialPort = new SerialPort("COM1", baud); however, TCPIPMedium would have an issue with the interface because it wouldn't need to initialize a serial port object. I know I am doing something majorly wrong here. I just can't figure it out and have been stuck for a while. What I also get confused on show the interface IMedium will get access to the communication object once it is created so it can write out the appropriate byte[] packet. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. My main goal is to have the Communicator class spit a packet out without caring which type of medium is active.

I load it from iphone safari and it works fine. I then stop the server and load it again, and it works, because the offline cache is doing its job. However... if I save the website as a start icon in the iphone dashboard, and then I try to open it with the server stopped it won't load. However... if I open it with the server running at least once (it will work) then I can open it later without problem. It looks like even though the page was cached in safari, it is not cached in this saved app. Anybody knows how to get around this? Thank you!

• OOP Design: relationship between entity classes

  I have at first sight a simple issue but can't wrap my head around on how to solve. I have an abstract class Compound. A Compound is made up of Structures. Then there is also a Container which holds 1 Compound. A "special" implementation of Compound has Versions. For that type of Compound I want the Container to hold the Versionof the Compound and not the Compound itself. You could say "just create an interface Containable" and a Container holds 1 Containable. However that won't work. The reason is I'm creating a framework and the main part of that framework is to simplify storing and especially searching for special data type held by Structure objects. Hence to search for Containers which contain a Compound made up of a specific Structure requires that the "Path" from Containerto Structure is well defined (Number of relationships or joins). I hope this was understandable. My question is how to design the classes and relationships to be able to do what I outlined.

But interface class in C++ also have this capability, it can also used to hidden data/type and implementation. And to hidden let the caller just see the interface when create object, we can add an factory method in it declaration in interface header. The comparison is: Cost: The interface way cost is lower, because you doesn't even need to repeat the public wrapper function implementation void Bar::doWork() { return m_impl->doWork(); }, you just need to define the signature in the interface. Well understand: The interface technology is more well understand by every C++ developer. Performance: Interface way performance not worse than PIMPL idiom, both an extra memory access. I assume the performance is same. • I need a form to tie MySQL Records together (i.e., many-to-many relationships).

  I need a HTML-based form to tie database records together. The user scenario that I envision is somthing like this: A super-user does a search of the database and is delivered a table of records based on that search; each record is numbered with the database-record id. There would also be two text fields next to each record. These text fields would allow: the user to make a reference from one record to another. For example, a user could enter into record id #457 that there is a correlation with record ID #242. The user would also describe the type of relationship it is. This could be with a simple integer that represents the type of relationship between the two records. When the super-user hits the submit button, all of these relationships are saved in a mySqljoin table. One option is to give me advice on how to implement and code this myself in PHP. However, before I reinvent the wheel, another option is to lead me to a free script that does something similar.

  So I have this code and I need it to only redirect when the correct password is added. Only problem is that I dont know what to add that will make it only redirect if the password is "hello" I understand that using "view-source" would reveal the password, I don't mind that, its the way I want it.   My game require an animation when one activity finishes and next started because I have develop game with multiple activity not as multiple scene per game. I have to show animation at the time of activity creation and activity destroy. I have trying to create basic animation that was supported by android. And all that xml file I have to post it into the anim folder but the loading of resource was so much high so any type of animation I provide using android method does not work for me it look weird. If scene class has some functionality for animation that please know me then I try to load different type of animation using scene. I have not create multiple scene because I have no awareness about how to manage multiple scene in andengine though I have a working experience of 8 months in andengine. So this help also provide me a great help. Basically I want to create animation like one activity slide out at the same time the other activity slide in. • I am having a hard time learning Python, is it just me? [closed]

  For the past two weeks I am trying to learn Python and a framework for web development, while doing so I learned a lot but not what I was looking for. I did manage to get everything set up and running, followed tutorials, but I still have not managed to create a navigation bar and a simple template website. My goal is to create web applications (like a blog) and perhaps platforms similar to stackoverflow. In which language was stackoverflow created in? I believe that Python Django or Python Tornado (which I tried) is more for people who have learned desktop application development. It is hard for me to make sense out of the complex and fragmented system. I'm able to develop with PHP and have already created blogs and similar applications. If Python and a framework is not for me, what type of language would be for me, which languages are used for these type of platforms, I would like to develop myself? I only omitted PHP because I found it later on a bit too inheriting, and the code is hardly readable and becomes quickly cluttered, I love how readable Python code is.

• knowing all available entity types

  I'm making a game where at some point the game will create enemies of random types. Each type of enemy available is defined on its own class derived from an enemy superclass. To do this, obviously the different types of enemies should be known. This is what I have thought of: Just make a list manually. Very simple to do, but I don't like it because I'll be adding more enemy types over time, so any time I add a new class I have to remember to update this (same if I remove an enemy). I would like some kind of auto-updating list. A completely component based system. There are no different classes for each enemy, but definitions of enemies in some file where all enemy types can be found. I really don't need that level of complexity for my game. I'm still using a component based model to some degree, but each Enemy type gets defined on its own class. Java Annotation processing. Give each enemy subclass an annotation like @EnemyType("whatever"), then code an annotation processor that writes in a file all available enemy types. Any time a new class is added the file gets updated after compilation.This gives me a feeling of failure even if its a good solution, it's very dependant on Java, so it means I cant think of a general design good for any kind of language. Also I think that this would be too much work for something so simple. I would like to see comments on these ideas and other possible solutions Thanks

• Dynamic object creation with HashMap

  I want to use a HashMap to dynamically create objects based on the key. I have a Random Map Generator that stores the maps in 3D Arrays of Type Integer[][][]. Upon creation of the actual map I iterate through this array and based on the Integer I want to create the right block. Example: Integer[][][] map ... map[6][6][6] = 3; 3 is a Earth-Block and now I want to initialize a new Block of this type and give it the right coordinates. Currently I store my Bindings from Integer to Class in a HashMap(Integer, String) and create my objects like that: int id = array[x][y][z]; String block_name = Blocks.map.get(id); Block block = (Block) Class.forName(block_name).newInstance(); block.setPosition(x,y,z); But I want to avoid newInstance() if possible. I've never worked that dynamically with Java before and I couldn't find a solution like changing the HashMap to (Integer, Class) or something. I just need to create a new Object based upon the Integer. Any ideas/solutions? Thanks in advance and have a wonderful day!

  Don't you just hate it when this happens: Fortunately, if you're running inside VirtualBox, you can resize your virtual disk and magically make your guest have a bigger disk very easily. There are 2 steps to doing this... 1. Resize the virtual disk Use the VBoxManage command line tool to extend the size of the Virtual Disk, specifying the path to the disk and the size in MB: VBoxManage modifyhd <uuid>|<filename> [--type normal|writethrough|immutable|shareable| readonly|multiattach] [--autoreset on|off] [--compact] [--resize <megabytes>|--resizebyte <bytes>]   If you booted up your guest at this point, the extra space is seen as an unformatted area on the disk, like this: So we now need to tell the guest about the extra space available. 2. Extend the guest's partition to use the extra space How you do this step depends on you guest OS type and the tools you have available. Linux guests often include the excellent gparted partition editor, whereas Windows 7 and 8 provide the Computer Management tool which can resize partitions. Unfortunately, my Windows XP vm has no such tool. But I do have a couple of other options: Most Linux installable .isos include the aforementioned gparted tool, so I could simply attach, say, an Ubuntu.iso as a Virtual CD/DVD in my Windows XP vm and boot off that. Then use gparted to extend the Windows XP partition, before finally rebooting. But I took another route and attached my resized virtual disk to a Windows Server 2012 vm I had lying around. Then I used the Computer Management tool in Windows Server 2012 to extend the partition of the Windows XP disk, before shutting down, unplugging the disk and reattaching to my Windows XP vm. (Note that if your vm's use different disk controllers, Windows will check the disks on booting). When I finally boot up my Windows XP guest I see the available disk space and all is well. So here is what i need: a search engine that will take a keyword. the search engine will open a new page with a list of all website users, displaying first the users that have the specific keyword in their username. display your username in the placeholder.
