• Asus A8V overcurrent

  This is not as much as a question as it is a note to those out there that upgrade their motherboards with better processors and the like. Here's my story. Recently I upgraded my processor. System specifications: • Asus A8V Deluxe • 4GB RAM • ATI Radeon 3870 AGP graphics card (I believe that's it) Anyway, I decided to put a dual core Opteron 180 in this rig, but the problem was that I needed to update the BIOS to V-1017, and not knowing the consequences, I went up to the Asus site and got the newest, the latest and the greatest, 1018.002 thinking that it was the best for this board, however it wasn't. I used the Asus EXFlash, which makes life a lot easier, flashed the BIOS and all of a sudden I start getting this message: USB overcurrent protection, system shutting down in 15 seconds to protect your system. WELL SHIT... This is a new one on me... I read the blogs, all the posts on this thing, and did all that everyone else did to correct the problem, but nothing helped. So i decided to start from square one, went back to Asus and looked at the BIOS download... OMG... IT WAS A BETA. So, I downloaded the update that was suggested 1017< and installed it and wouldn't you know, it took care of the problem, no more USB overcurrent protection, no more crashing. I write this today to let you all know about this, just in case you have an issue such as this. Well there you all go. Fly safe and eat your vegetables.

• Is The Ease Of Windows Phone Development Ruining Its Image

  I was reading an article on Mashable recently by a long time iPhone user who is living solely on a Lumia 920 at the moment and giving her assessment.  One thing that struck a nerve with me was her describing the Windows Phone ecosystem as immature.  She wasn’t saying this because of the number of apps or the big names like most people do.  She means the quality of the apps in the store. This hit a nerve with me.  I find it hard to believe that the majority of app on iOS are of any higher quality than any other platform.  I believe in any ecosystem you are going to find some high end, high quality apps, but the majority by default will be from people who are trying to solve a problem but do not have the resources to have top graphics and full blown testing.  There will also be a large number that are just there trying to trick you into giving up some cash. Does any of the mean that we shouldn’t take notice of this complaint?  Of course not!  We should always strive to publish the best quality apps possible.  Don’t do things like leaving default app icons and backgrounds.  Put a little effort into your design.  You should also spend as much time as possible ensuring against crashes and giving the user the best experience possible.  Think through your apps organization and navigation.  Go the extra step of putting it into beta and letting select people use it and give you feedback before going to full release. • How do I install the latest version of Mupen64?

  Alright, I can't figure out how to install Mupen64 on Ubuntu 12.04. I'm gonna be moving in ~2 days with no internet connection for an indefinite amount of time, so that's why I'm asking for answers here instead of figuring it out myself (I don't have time right now to sit and fiddle with figuring out emulators). I'd like to know how to properly install the latest version of Mupen64 (Stable. No beta or anything like that) and how to be able to use a controller with it. I've heard rumor that the latest version of M64 no longer has a GUI, but that there are ways to add a GUI to it after installation, so I'd also like to know how to add the Mupen64Py UI to it. I am not totally Ubuntu savvy. I do not know how to compile stuff from source, I don't necessarily know a lot of terminology, I'm not very handy with the terminal, etc. So it would be helpful if you explain each step in an easy to understand manner. Thanks in advance to anybody who helps out. EDIT: I've already seen How do I install mupen64plus?, just so you guys know. I just need instructions that are more detailed. Also, thanks for the edit, Jorge Castro! I guess I really should have properly formatted my question ^^;

• Velvet screen after grub selection

  After a fresh install of Ubuntu 11.10 64-bit, the boot seems to stop after selecting the ubuntu option (same with the rescue one) in the grub menu. At first I thought this was related to grub-efi, as I've had similar problems after a Ubuntu 11.04 update which replaced grub-efi with grub-pc and got me stuck on a "elf magic" grub console (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apt/+bug/800910). While the 11.04 problem was resolved with a simple chroot and apt-get install from the live cd, that solution doesn't work this time. The drive with the bootloader is a sata3 ssd with 64 gb gpt (sdb1 20 mb efi boot partition fat16, sdb2 60 gb root ext4 and sdb3 4 gb swap) on a msi e350ia-e45 mainboard with a pair of 2 TB ext4 mbr drives for photos/music/movies. I've tried a few grub-install/update-grub with boot-directory sdb1 from chroot, but I cant seem to go anywhere. Even this guide: http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Grub2#EFI (ofc I replaced grub2 with grub in the grub-install and efibootmgr commands) doesnt seem to get me anywhere. Any help or ideas are appeciated ;) edit: I guess its the combination of gpt/uefi that also seems to haunt f16 edit: same with 12.04 beta btw

• An online version of ClearTrace

  When I visit clients for the first time and conduct a performance review I introduce them to ClearTrace. It’s still the best way I know to identify exactly which queries are consuming the most resources.  The downside is that it needs to be downloaded and create a database to store the results.  I finally decided it would be easier if I could just upload a trace immediately. You can find the online version of ClearTrace at TraceTune.com.  It provides a simple way to upload a trace file and see exactly which stored procedures or SQL statements consume the most CPU and disk.   This is still a work in progress as I try to determine exactly which features from ClearTrace are important.  I’ve also limited the file upload to 10MB in this beta release.  That might not sound like much but I get over 20,000 events using this stored procedure to generate the trace. If you’re looking for something to do on a Friday, I’d suggest a little performance tuning.  Generating 10MB of trace data doesn’t take long at all and in a short time you’ll see exactly which SQL statements you need to tune first.

• You can step over await

  I’ve just found the coolest feature of VS 2012 by far. I thought that being able to silence an exception from the “exception was thrown” popup was awesome, and the “reload all” button when a project file changes is amazing, but this is way beyond all of that. You can step over awaits when you debug your code!! With F10!!! Ok, so that may not sound such a big deal. You can step over ifs and whiles and no-one is celebrating. But await is different. await actually stops your method, signs up to be notified when a Task is finished,  returns, and resumes your method at some indeterminate point in the future. You could even end up continuing on a completely different thread. All that happens, and all I have to do is press F10. I used to have to painstakingly set a breakpoint on the first line of my callback before stepping over any asynchronous method. Even when we started using async, my mouse would instinctively click the margin every time I wanted to go past an await. And the times I was driven insane by my breakpoint getting hit by some other path of execution I don’t care about. I think this might have been introduced in the VS11 Beta, I’m pretty sure I tried it in the Async CTP in VS2010 and it didn’t work. Now it does! Woop!

• Nvidia drivers with GeForce 680M problem [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: There's an issue with an Alpha/Beta Release of Ubuntu, what should I do? I have a new Alienware M17x which I have installed 64-bit Ubuntu 12.10 (dual boot). I have tried various ways to install the Nvidia drivers for the GeForce GTX 680M (which they claim they are compatible with): from Ubuntu Software Centre (though Additional Drivers fails to detect the card.) using sudo apt-get install nvidia-current downloading the drivers from nvidia and manually installing them (ctrl + alt + F6, sudo service lightdm stop, sudo ./NVIDIA*, sudo reboot) (each with a clean install of Ubuntu) but in all cases, when I reboot after installing nvidia-setings claims that I am not using the driver and should sudo nvidia-xconfig from the terminal, which I do but this has no effect and I am stuck in crappy resolution until I rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf and reboot. • Git Branch Model for iOS projects with one developer

  I'm using git for an iOS project, and so far have the following branch model: feature_brach(usually multiple) -> development -> testing -> master Feature-branches are short-lived, just used to add a feature or bug, then merged back in to development and deleted. Development is fairly stable, but not ready for production. Testing is when we have a stable version with enough features for a new update, and we ship to beta testers. Once testing is finished, it can be moved back into development or advanced into master. The problem, however, lies in the fact that we can't instantly deploy. On iOS, it can be several weeks between the time a build is released and when it actually hits users. I always want to have a version of the code that is currently on the market in my repo, but I also have to have a place to keep the current stable code to be sent for release. So: where should I keep stable code where should I keep the code currently on the market and where should I keep the code that is in review with Apple, and will be (hopefully) put on the market soon? Also, this is a one developer team, so collaboration is not totally necessary, but preferred because there may be more members in the future.

• [Silverlight 4] New PathListBox Control

  One of the new features of Silverlight 4 is the new PathListBox Control. This control is basically a Listbox control witch takes the layout of a shape that you want, so we can represent our data as we want without limits.   So we are ready to open the new Microsoft Blend 4 Beta. First, we going to create a new Silverlight Data Driven Application (MVVM) project.   Open the main view (MainView.xaml), you can find it in Views folder, i look for the new control.   Once you add the PathListbox Control to the main layout of the MainView.xaml, we will add a Line Shape. Now, we are in the main step. Set the LayoutPaths property of the PathListbox control with the line shape that is just created.   The final step is set the ItemsSource property of the PathListbox control. We are going to use a mock object collection from the main view model. I have created the object collection on the main view model created by the Silverlight MVVM project template.   This is the result that we can improve with some animations. This a basic basic use of the PathListbox but using your imagination you can do very cool things.

• Ubuntu 12.10 and nVidia drivers don't like each other?

  I decided to upgrade both my computers from Precise to Quantal. What a mistake that was. My laptop has a nVidia GT 330M card, while the desktop has an nVidia 9600 GT. In both cases everything goes great as long as I use the Nouveau driver (ugh!). Can't really play games (Amnesia... and hoping for Steam Beta participation...), even though it's OK for work. Now, ever since 9.04 or so, I just installed nvidia-current and all just worked. Since 12.10, after installing nVidia drivers, Unity won't start at all (hangs with only the wallpaper displayed, no cursor or widgets), Gnome Shell is permanently in fallback mode. Now, I have tried on both computers, with multiple clean installs on Ubuntu (two separate downloads, just in case), one from Ubuntu Gnome Remix. And additionally, Fedora 17, which seems to suffer from the same issue. Tried all nVidia driver suggestions available in Software Sources, and even compiled the drivers myself. I tried several versions of the driver to exclude an issue with the newest one. In my frustration, I have switched to Windows (which, ironically, "just works" with my hardware), but still hold a twin OS configuration on the desktop and would like to use Ubuntu again. So, can anyone point me to where the issue might lie?

• Black Screen (but with cursor) after wake-up from suspend to RAM

  [Lenovo Thinkpad X60] After upgrading to 12.04, first thing I did was get suspend to HDD back, because I don't use my battery a lot. So I did that. After a while (about a week, I upgraded on release, not beta), maybe a week or so, I started getting black screens from time to time after waking it up from suspend to RAM. I never got that problem with suspend to HDD. As it only happens sometimes, I can't reproduce it o.O Sometimes it doesn't happen for a week (daily use, approx 2-6 wake-ups a day), then every single time. The precise symptoms are as follows: normally I got a black screen with my cursor on it, which can be moved, no problems there. I can't interact with the system in any way except for turning it off on the 1/0 button... the weird thing is, the cursor seems to react to what I had opened when going into suspend to RAM, so for instance one day I had writer open and then my cursor was a "I" for most of the screen. I only get this in 12.04, never had any problems with this in 9.04-11.10. Any ideas? Big thx in advance!

• Ubuntu 10.10 Ad-Hoc Setup (from Wireless Router, to Ubuntu Server/Desktop to Wireless Router)

  Okay, so I know there are different approaches for this, but I will explain my story briefly before getting to the technical stuff. My fiancée and I are going through some financial issues (as I assume a lot of us are). We ended up having to move from our house and stay with some friends/family for 6 months, just to get ourselves caught up. (Medical bills, among other issues,etc). So this is where it gets fun. At our friends house, we are staying in the loft setup which is not near the cable modem and wireless router. I have a "hand-crafted" media center running XBMC, an Ubuntu 10.10 Server/Desktop (multi-purpose, very powerful and tons drive space), two working laptops, a between the two of us we have multiple wireless devices/phones. Now our friends Wireless router doesn't have any options for assigning IP addresses, but my router does. My current setup is: Friends Cable Modem -- Friend's Wireless Router -- Ubuntu 10.10 Server -- My Wireless Router (local-link from Friend's wireless (incoming) to sharing connection on ETH0 (outgoing)) -- to all devices. (Wireless Modem, Ubuntu Server that share's it's wireless incoming connection to the ethernet port my Wireless router share's with the rest of the devices). I setup my router to use default settings from my friend's router, using Google's DNS on my router (disabled DNS setup on Ubuntu Server), everything is assigned nicely and runs smooth. My Ubuntu server was given the address 10.42.43.1 (assuming standard from Network-Manager). (On the Ubuntu machine that shares to my wireless router; I have some server apps installed, but mainly just use Samba/NFS/Tangerine action. My problem/goal is that every device has no problem of accessing the internet from my router, the media-center has an assigned ip address, all services from all devices (ZeroConf, Avanhi, Bonjour, GIT, SSH, FTP, Apache2, etc) all work correctly except from my Ubuntu Server (which serves the wireless connection to ETH0 to another Wireless Router). The Ubuntu 10.10 Server/Desktop is not broadcasting anything (the Zeroconf Service Discovery 0.4 Gnome Applet shows the services from the Ubuntu server but no other computers can see them). I can access it from my Media-Center (Running Xbuntu 10.04) if I direct it to 10.42.43.1, no problem. But I cannot access Tangerine (Daapd) and the Samba shares do not show up on any computers for 10.42.43.1 (not in the WORKGROUP which Samba is setup simple and default but I can direct computers to that address and the shares will add except on a damn Windows 7 parition). Is this an issue with how I have my router setup and possible the gateway? An issue with Network-Manager? And issue with my Ubuntu Server/Desktop? I know there is a lot to that, but it's simpler than I probably have explained? Any help would be appreciated. If you need more details, I can provide them. If there is a better way of my attempting this home-network, please let me know. Thanks in advance for the help.

All updates have been installed and updates are turned ON .NET Framework 4.0 is installed .NET Framework 3.5 is installed IIS is installed Windows Powershell 3.0 should already be included in Server • Cannot turn on "Network Discovery and File Sharing" when Windows Firewall is enabled

  I have a problem similar to this one. Windows Firewall prevents File and Printer sharing from working and Why does File and Printer Sharing keep turning off in Windows 7? I cannot turn on Network Discovery. This is Windows 7 Home Premium, x64. It's a Dell XPS 1340 and Windows came installed from the OEM. This used to work. Now it doesn't. I don't know what has changed. In windows Explorer, the UI looks like this: When I click the yellow panel that says "Click to change...", the panel disappears, then immediately reappears, with exactly the same text. If I go through the control panel "Network and Sharing Center" thing, the UI looks like this: If I tick the box to "turn on network discovery", the "Save Changes" button becomes enabled. If I then click that button, the dialog box just closes, with no message or confirmation. Re-opening the same dialog box shows that Network Discovery has not been turned on. If I turn off Windows Firewall, I can then turn on Network Discovery via either method. The machine is connected to a wireless home network, via a router. The network is marked as "Home Network" in the Network and Sharing Center, which I think corresponds to the "Private" profile in Windows Firewall Advanced Settings app. (Confirm?) The PC is not part of a domain, and has never been part of a domain. The machine is not bridging any networks. There is a regular 100baseT connector but I have the network adapter for that disabled in Windows. Something else that seems odd. Within Windows Firewall Advanced Settings, there are no predefined rules available. If I click the "New Rule...." Action on the action pane, the "Predefined" option is greyed out. like this: In order to attempt to allow the network discovery protocols through on the private network, I hand-coded a bunch of rules, intending to allow the necessary UPnP and WDP protocols supporting network discovery. I copied them from a working Windows 7 Ultimate PC, running on the same network. This did not work. Even with the hand-coded rules, I still cannot turn on Network Discovery. I looked on the interwebs, and the only solution that appears to work is a re-install of Windows. Seriously? If I try netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group="Network Discovery" new enable=Yes ...it says "No rules match the specified criteria" EDIT: by the way, these services are running. DNS Client Function Discovery Resource Publication SSDP Discovery UPnP Device Host in any case, since it works with no firewall, I would assume all necessary services are present and running. The issue is a firewall thing, but I don't know how to diagnose further, or fix it. Q1: Is there a way to definitively insure the correct holes are punched through the Windows Firewall to allow Network Discovery to function? Q2: Should I expect the "predefined" firewall rules to be greyed out? Q3: Why did this change?

• Wireless AAA for a small, bandwidth-limited hotel.

  We (the tech I work with and myself) live in a remote northern town where Internet access is somewhat of a luxury, and bandwidth is quite limited. Here, overage charges ranging from few hundreds, to few thousands of dollars a month, is not uncommon. I myself incur regular monthly charges just through my regular Internet usage at home (I am allowed 10G for $60CAD!) As part of my work, I have found myself involved with several hotels that are feeling this. I know that I can come up with something to solve this problem, but I am relatively new to system administration and I don't want my dreams to overcome reality. So, I pass these ideas on to you, those with much more experience than I, in hopes you will share some of your thoughts and concerns. This system must be cost effective, yes the charges are high here, but the trust in technology is the lowest I've ever seen. Must be capable of helping client reduce their usage (squid) Allow a limited (throughput and total usage) amount of free Internet, as this is often franchise policy. Allow a user to track their bandwidth usage Allow (optional) higher speed and/or usage for an additional charge. This fee can be obtained at the front desk on checkout and should not require the use of PayPal or Credit Card. Unfortunately some franchises have ridiculous policies that require the use of a third party remote service to authenticate guests to your network. This means WPA is out, and it also means that I do not auth before Internet usage, that will be their job. However, I do require the ABILITY to perform authentication for Internet access if a hotel does not have this policy. I will still have to track bandwidth (under a guest account by default) and provide the same limiting, however the guest often will require a complete 'unlimited' access, in terms of existence, not throughput. Provide firewalling capabilities for hotels that have nothing, Office, and Guest network segregation (some of these guys are running their office on the guest network, with no encryption, and a simple TOS to get on!) Prevent guests from connecting to other guests, however provide a means to allow this to happen. IE. Each guest connects to a page and allows the other guest, this writes a iptables rule (with python-netfilter) and allows two rooms to play a game, for instance. My thoughts on how to implement this. One decent box (we'll call it a router now) with a lot of ram, and 3 NIC's: Internet Office Guests (AP's + In Room Ethernet) Router Firewall Rules Guest can talk to router only, through which they are routed to where they need to go, including Internet services. Office can be used to bridge Office to Internet if an existing solution is not in place, otherwise, it simply works for a network accessible web (webmin+python-webmin?) interface. Router Software: OpenVZ provides virtualization for a few services I don't really trust. Squid, FreeRADIUS and Apache. The only service directly accessible to guests is Apache. Apache has mod_wsgi and django, because I can write quickly using django and my needs are low. It also potentially has the FreeRADIUS mod, but there seems to be some caveats with this. Firewall rules are handled on the router with iptables. Webmin (or a custom django app maybe) provides abstracted control over any features that the staff may need to access. Python, if you haven't guessed it's the language I feel most comfortable in, and I use it for almost everything. And finally, has this been done, is it a overly massive project not worth taking on for one guy, and/or is there some tools I'm missing that could be making my life easier? For the record, I am fairly good with Python, but not very familiar with many other languages (I can struggle through PHP, it's a cosmetic issue there). And i can connect to terminal services, locally and remotely, using IPv4: > telnet 127.0.0.1 3389 (connects) > telnet 192.168.1.244 3389 (connects) But i cannot connect to RDP, locally or remotely, over IPv6: > telnet ::1 3389 (fails to connect) > telnet fe80::224:1dff:fe86:fdf2 3389 (fails to connect) We can see that the system is listening on 3389: Except why won't it listen on port 3389 (ipv6)? Unfortunately it's not the firewall. Aside from the fact that i'm connecting locally (in which case the firewall doesn't apply), the firewall doesn't apply:
