• How to adjust and combine multiple lower quality photos into one better using FOSS?

  I have multiple noisy photos (caputed without tripod) that needs to be adjusted (moved/rotated) and averaged. How it's better to do it in Linux with FOSS console-based programs? Current way is something like: mplayer mf://*.JPG -vo yuv4mpeg:file=qqq.yuv transcode -i qqq.yuv -y null -J stabilize=maxshift=500:fieldsize=100:fieldnum=6:stepsize=50:shakiness=10 transcode -i qqq.yuv -J transform=smoothing=100000:sharpen=0:optzoom=0 -y raw -o www.yuv mplayer www.yuv -vo pnm gm convert -average 0*.ppm q.ppm i.e.: Convert photos to video Apply Transcode's "Stabilize" filter Convert the video back to images Average the images. It works, but bad: photos still not perfectly adjusted and the whole sequence is very slow. What is better way of doing it?

• Allowing creation/modification of virtual aliases using web.config

  Hi, I've been given a problem to fix, and I initially thought of .htaccess files, except for one thing, I quickly realized it's an IIS server. Is it possible to allow a webmaster the ability to modify the virtual directories using web.config files in the same way you can using .htaccess files? If so, any ideas on where I can find details on how this is done that I can communicate with the end client? We want to be able to do this without having to provide access to the IIS console to the webmaster. An example of the desired change is: http://FQDN/Careers/Careers.aspx?locale=en-ca&uid=Careers have http:FQDN/careers point to the above, but modified/added/removed by the end user using web.config

• Can't create VM with virt-install on Debian wheezy

  Cant find any answers anywhere so here goes. I am trying to CREATE a new virtual machine using the virt-install command from a console on a Debian wheezy install. I keep getting the following output: Starting install... ERROR internal error process exited while connecting to monitor: char device redirected to /dev/pts/1 inet_listen_opts: bind(ipv4,127.0.0.1,5951): Cannot assign requested address inet_listen_opts: FAILED I assumed that the port (5951 in this case) was being used judging by the error message and other sites I visited for an answer, but the same error occurs whatever number I use for the port. I cant see that port being listened upon in netstat either. Anyone have any ideas what may be wrong?

• Rails3 environment running very slow on Windows XP, Ubuntu 9.04, Ubuntu 9.10

  I've tried all three (granted the Ubuntu versions were via VirtualBox with XP as a host, but I gave the images all the available RAM my system has). Loading the rails environment is taking 30-60 seconds. rails console, rake test:units - anything that requires rails to load up. And not just on the first go - every time. I've even used autotest to see if it helps with execution time for unit tests, but it doesn't. Any time I change one test, it still takes 30 seconds to load them, and then about 4 seconds to execute. Has anyone else come across this issue? Has anyone figured out any way to fix this?

  An SD (SDHC) card installed in an HP ProLiant DL380p Gen8 server running VMware ESXi just failed. I encountered some rather ominous looking messages on the vCenter console and in the HP ProLiant ILO event log... Lost connectivity to the device ... backing the boot filesystem. As a result, host configuration changes will not be saved to persistent storage. Embedded Flash/SD-CARD: Error writing media 0, physical block 848880: Stack Exception. VMware advocates the use of USB and SD (SDHC) boot devices for ESXi. It was one of the main reasons the smaller footprint ESXi was developed (versus the older ESX). I've spent much time highlighting the differences between ESXi's installable and embedded modes to coworkers and clients. However, these failures do seem to happen. In this case, this is my third instance. Luckily, this is a vSphere cluster with SAN storage. What steps should be taken to remediate this failure?

  I'm having trouble getting into BIOs Setup from Supermicro IPMI "KVM" - Remote Control Console Redirection. I need to change the boot order to CDROM first. I'm running Windows 2008 server. After some Googling, it says here that the method is to: Press TAB to enter Setup screen. Press Esc twice to take effect. http://www.supermicro.com/support/faqs/faq.cfm?faq=6222 A month ago, I tried that 30-40 times + DEL, over 2 hours, it worked. Now, I've been trying the same key combination for more than an hour, rebooting each time it failed, it still doesn't work. Note: I've only got a notebook computer, no extra monitor.

• Troubleshooting Amazon EC2 reboot

  We've had a server (CentOS) running in EC2 for a few months. It had been going pretty smoothly until today when we got an alarm that the server was unavailable (HTTP service couldn't be reached). So I tried SSHing into the box but that timed out as well. I logged into the EC2 console and it said the instance was running and there wasn't anything in the system log. One odd thing I noticed is that even though we have an Elastic IP attached to it (which shows in the Elastic IP management area), the instance detail is not showing that there is an EIP associated with the instance. I looked through the message log and the last thing I see around the time we got our alert was the dhclient renewed the lease. I'm guessing there may have been some sort of issue with the networking. How might I check if that was the problem, or if there were any other issues that may have caused our instance to stop responding?

  We have a ASDL modem connected to a Cisco PIX 515 to a switch. We have managed to get the PIX setup with ethernet1 (inside) with our IP range 192.168.5.1-192.168.5.254 and the internal network is working fine. We are having difficulty getting a connection from the PIX through the router on ethernet0 (outside). We have managed to ping external networks by setting up IMCP echo/echo-reply but are unable to setup any other protocols in a similar manner. Can any one help with a few lines that could be typed into the console that will allow this connection?

• straight to grub prompt on boot

  I am very lost. I did a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04 on a laptop. First reboot was fine. I ran all the recommended upgrades, and now every time I start I get just a grub>_ prompt. No error message, just the prompt, and a little banner at the top saying grub's version and telling me that I have minimal bash style editing. I've tried: 1) Re-installing grub via sudo grub-install sda (There is only one disk with only two partitions, one primary, and one for swap) 2) Changed GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=10 GRUB_TIMEOUT=30 GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="rootdelay=90" GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="rootdelay=90" in /etc/default/grub. No luck. • Mac Mail import from Entourage failed

  I am trying to import the entire Folder-structure from Entourage 2008 to Mac Mail on a Mac OS X 10.5.8. First I wanted to export the whole E-Mail Database from Entourage to Desktop as a .rge File. The export got aborted through a message which indicated that my Entourage database is corrupt and that I should rebuild it. I then went over to Mac Mail and imported the Entourage Folder-structure through File/import mailboxes.../Entourage. The bulky import did take some time and the progress bar never reached its full length. But at the end the import was successful. When I checked the imported folder-structure in Mac Mail I noticed that quiet a few Subfolders where missing. I checked Console and saw following message. Mail[2899] Applescript Error: aliasForMailImporter got an error: AppleEvent handler failed. Question: What does that mean and what can I do to get my subfolder-structure over completely?

• Hyper-V VMs hanging 10 minutes after startup

  Hyper-V running under a fresh install of 2008 R2 DC 2 VMs both running 2008 R2 STD One VM has SQL 2008 Server w/ SP2 and Office 2007 Enterprise w/ SP2 Othe VMS only Office 2007 w/ SP2. Approximately 10 minutes after reboot the Hyuper-V host the VMs will hang Hang = answers pings, but no RDP connections and Hyper-V console session is non responsive Disabled Hyper-V and had no proble with 2008 R2 DC host. Started the three Hyper-V services and 10 minutes later was hung again. Hardware is HP DL380 G4 2 socket, 48 GB, Internal SAS controller 1.5TB C drive VMs .VHDs are on external SAS controller on a 1.5 TB RAID5 volume. Nothing in event log on either VMs or Hyper-V host. • Windows Server 2003 Licensing

  Hi all, I'm looking to get a Windows Server 2003 box in the middle of my linux network. :( I'm just concerned about CAL licensing for it. No devices will access any network server function of Windows Server 2003. I don't need Windows for DHCP or DNS or file and print sharing. I have linux boxes to do that! xD I just need a box running Windows (of some variety) to host those few apps that have to run on Windows like my AV management console. In short do I need any CALs for my server if its not acting as server itself. I think Windows Server 2003 comes with 5 CALs which can be per user for the admins to use RDP? Thanks, Phil

• How do I elevate privileges when running appcmd from a nant task?

  We are using a Windows 7 box as build server. As part of our continuous integration process I would like to stop and start an IIS 7 website. I have tried doing this from the command line using appcmd: appcmd start site "my website" However, this only works if I start the console window by choosing "Run as Administrator", so it won't work out-of-the-box from NAnt etc. How do I script appcmd to be run with elevated privileges (or am I going about this in the wrong way)? • Forcing DFS replication on Windows 2003 Web Edition SP2

  I have a pair of web servers running Windows Server 2003 Web Edition SP2 (build 3790). There servers are a on a Gigabit LAN and are on the same subnet. I created a new link on the 1st server and added the second box as a target to the link. I configured replication as ring. The 2nd server gets some of the files on the scheduled replication but this varies wildly which makes me think it's not running fully. The folder on server 1 is 1.3GB. Is there some way I can force repication (from a console?) and monitor the progress and see if/when/why it fails.

• IPcop Multiple WAN Subnets

  We have an IPcop firewall and have had no issues with it. We've had a block of 10 IP addresses from our colocation provider and have been able port forward from those to internal servers as needed. We've recently needed additional IPs and the colocation provider issued an additional block of 10. The problem: The 10 new IP addresses issued are in a different subnet with a different gateway. The question: How do I add the new gateway into IPcop? How do I make it so that any outbound traffic in response to any inbound traffic from a new IP go back out through the new gateway? I attempted to add a static route via the console using the following command: route add -net x.x.x.x gw x.x.x.x netmask 255.255.255.192 I also added the new IPs as aliases and setup port forwarding as I've done with the existing IP block. However, when I attempt to access a web server from an external workstation, it just times out. Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Luckily, I have identified a few problem access points by MAC address (via their log messages in Console.app). Is it possible to tell my Airport on my Macbook to avoid those access points, and only speak with the access points who are far less touchy about me drinking the Apple kool-aid?   I am running an Ubuntu server guest on Win 7 guest, and am running a webrick server (RoR dev). If I have just a host-only network, everything works fine and the browser response is instant. However, if I add a second network (NAT), so that the server can connect to the internet (for various updates etc.), the host-to-guest access gets really slow. I can't use the bridge connection. I am using the port 3000 (RoR Webrick server) and connecting to the guest via internet browser on this port (eg http://192.168.56.102:3000). Any idea, what could be causing this?   Hello! I have a server with two 1.5TB hard drives. I was going to install a Windows Server 2008 R2 and create software RAID1 using Windows Disk Management Utility. I instaleld Windows, open this console and that is what I see: http://i.imgur.com/KoC9a.png Setup program created a System Reserved Partition at my second HDD. I don't understand now, how can I create RAID1, because space, which supposed to be used for copy of disk C, now is used for this hidden partition. So is there any way now to create correct RAID1? May it is possible to move this partition to the Disk 0, where I have plenty of free space? Unfortunately I can't reinstall Windows and apply other options at the disk management step of the installation, because installation image is not longer connected to the server and I have no physical access to server, only remote desktop.

• Problem restarting my Ubuntu system

  Whenever I try to restart my Ubuntu either from the command line by typing reboot or in GNOME the computer goes from X to console, starts the shutdown process and then a message saying "[ some number ] Starting new kernel" appears on the screen and the computer goes back to X login screen. I suspect this must have something to do with nvidia drivers, because it seemed to have appeared around the time I bought a new graphic card. Also, when I reboot the second time I see weird graphical artifacts on the screen. When I boot from ubuntu live cd I can reboot just fine. I used jaunty, recently I switched to karmic with no change. This bug is very annoying, because I have to hard reset my computer in order to reboot. Also not good for the filesystems, I suspect. Can you suggest a way to debug the cause or if not at least the easiest way to go about reinstalling ubuntu without losing customizations/settings/data?
